I always stood by this episode, I think the energetic acting and direction along with the fact that I was super impressed when I found out the episode was filmed in the middle of January when it was freezing cold, yet they still look super hot, which also comes down to some great production work. But watching this I realise that this episode has a hell of a lot of flaws lmao. I still enjoy this episode, but your attention to detail when watching these episodes is definitely something to be admired. Great review :)

It’s interesting how I see so many of these episodes through rose-tinted glasses, solely because of the nostalgia I associate with you. You’re right, so many of Chibnall’s problems shown in Series 11 are evident in this episode. It’s actually really refreshing to see that even RTD’s era, which some people call the show’s golden era, isn’t perfect.

    @comfyDev 10 месяцев назад

10:15 Ooh, I can explain the gravity thing! In space, gravity will accelerate all objects at the same speed over time (see the hammer and the feather on the moon video for an example). So even though the Doctor has way less mass than the ship, they'll both fall into the sun at the same speed, and he won't be pulled off the ship. The same thing happens to astronauts on the space station: they can't actually be weightless (since gravity is the thing that keeps them and the space station orbiting the Earth instead of flying off in a straight line), but since the astronauts and the space station are both falling at the same speed and in the same direction, they feel weightless anyway. The same thing applies to the escape pod: the magnetic field doesn't need to pull the pod out of the sun, it just needs to slightly slow the acceleration until the ship catches up with the pod as they both fall in.

Actually the physics problems weren't much of a problem.
The Doctor wouldn't be pulled from the ship by the star's gravity upon opening the door because the ship is being accelerated by the star at the same rate as The Doctor
Imagine opening the door of a car falling through the air towards the ground, the only reason you may not hit the ground at the exact same time as the car is the fact Earth has an atmosphere, if the car was in space you'd stay in the car. The same principle applies regardless of the mass of the body you're falling towards, except in some very specific circumstances of which the one in the show is not.
Also the tractor beam wouldn't have to struggle that much to return the escape pod to the ship, all it would have to do is to do enough work on the escape pod to reverse the magnitude of its velocity, if the escape pod weighs 20 tonnes and is travelling away from the ship at 5m/s this shouldn't take much more than 250kJ of energy transfer to pull off, or roughly the energy released by burning 6mg of petrol. Doesn't sound too bad to me.
Additionally the star appears to be quite cool based on the colour of its surface (approximately 1100K or 800'C (around 1.5x as hot as the surface of Venus)) so looking directly into it from that distance wouldn't necessarily be fatal or blinding, assuming the spacesuit is adequately cooled; you may even be able to make out features on its surface if you squint like the Doctor did.
Even if Chibnall isn't necessarily a physicist these circumstances are actually not as extreme as they may seem to a layperson.

10:18 that's not how gravity works!
(Edit: Saw another comment further up after writing this that corrects you, but I still think the detail here is important.)
First and foremost, all of the gravitational forces of that sun acting on the doctor were already acting on him before the air lock opened. Opening the door wouldn't have somehow exposed him to more gravitational forces and "suck him straight out" into the sun. If that were the case, everyone on board the ship would be constantly pulled towards the side of the ship facing the sun.
Secondly, the less massive an object, the less it is affected by a gravitational force acting on it. "Gravity is the attraction between two objects that have mass. The amount of gravity is directly proportional to the amount of mass of the objects and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the objects." The less massive you are, the less you are impacted by the gravitational pull of said object. So the doctor, who I'm willing to bet weight just a smidge less than a space faring vessel of that size, would actually be less affected by the sun's gravity than the ship, so there is no logical reason that he should be ripped away from the ship by the sun's gravity. This isn't even considering the fact that the ship likely has an artificial gravity since our characters aren't floating around it all episode, the strength of which we can compare to earth since that's the most likely basis for it. So, since he was much closer to the ship, the Doctor would have been pulled towards it probably more strongly than towards the sun.
    Edit:
When Cath opened the air lock later on, we are shown the air rushing out of the chamber by her hair moving with the movement of the air as the chamber depressurised. The pair flying out into space doesn't indicate the "gravity suddenly appearing," rather, showcases that they are being pulled outside by the rush of the air leaving the chamber all at once, as they likely would be. Why doesn't this happen to the doctor? well, we see his chamber depressurise with him inside before opening. With Cath and her husband, the door opens immediately, letting the air rush out all at once and dragging them with it. Since they would carry their momentum in the vacuum of space thanks to the lack of air resistance, even with the force of the ship's artificial gravity acting on them, we're safe to assume that they could potentially break free of the ship's gravity with this momentum given their assumed proximity to the sun.
Everything else you mentioned in this episode about shoddy writing and plot-convenient actions and science, for the most part, seemed spot on. But this little section where you rip on Chibnall for not understanding gravity is just incorrect.

the blueprint of the Doctor who we had today

Gravity wouldn't effect The Doctor when the airlock opens because he is on the ship being effected by it anyway, the fact the door is open or shut doesnt change his relative speed. A magnet is way stronger than gravity (you can check this on Earth). The switch being outside, it would be inside if pod was attached.

Americans would be pointing out that the answer to the question "Who had the Most No 1 records, Elvis or the Beatles?" was wrong. While in UK charts it `was` indeed Elvis - In the States, it was the Beatles who achieved more No 1 records than Elvis (A Record they still hold to this day)

The Master was already Harold Saxon at that point, you really dont understand all that time travelling when it starts to get confusing.. lol in FUTURE, the Master will travel back in time to become Saxon, SO he already is here, he is already Saxon, Martha herself states that she knows that voice, so Harold Saxon was already there BEFORE Martha met with the Doctor. We saw season 2 christmas special how the soldier in the tank said, Mr. Saxon, before they shot down that spider lady space ship..

I love this episode, it's got great drama, solid acting and some great emotional moments. I'll give you that this episode has flaws like that useless character and the science bring way off. But still I dont get how you can he surprised at the doctor crawling on the flaw in agony when he is the temperature of a sun and being possessed by one at the same time. And also martha surely isn't obliged to love the doctor, this guy was with her in near death experiences and emotions were high. Also when that guy kicked the machine I reckon like you pointed out with 30 minutes to live, in boiling hot temperatures and an extra killer on the loose which is a good addition as he adds extra tension to them already trying to fix their ship, I think some of this review was kinda wrong. But hey it's your opinion obviously your just as entitled to it as me, and I agree with you most of the time anyways.

Science isn't actually off. The doctor was under the same gravity as the ship, and so would be falling towards the sun at the exact same speed as the ship was. Hence why he doesn't go flying off. The captain and her husband were launched into space because they were sucked out by the air escaping at high speeds, shooting them ahead of the falling ship.

if you think about it... if the star is living creature then that means it isn't actually a star

    • @AnEnormousNerd

Depends on your definition of star, doesn't it? After all, if it's still a massive superheated cloud of hydrogen formed from a collapsed nebula then perhaps it is.
