Yeah, I can validate this as well. My old audioengine d1 dac/amp didn’t have enough omph. Even with my somewhat new jds labs atom stack, I have to crank the knob to around the 12-1 o clock position on low gain.
I picked up a set of these cans years ago but, as I found out in an odd fashion, I have a larger head than average head. It took a few days of leaving the headphones stretched over the box they came in to make them comfortable to wear all day. Something to keep in mind if you find these amazing headsets a bit too tight when you first get then. They really are bullet proof!
I got the 80 ohm a few years ago based on a review I saw. The bass was fantastic and quick as you describe. Not a lot of mid-bass which is great (I find stuff like the hd650 and koss porta pro to have an ear-clogged underwater sound because of too much mid bass for my ears). The soundstage, imaging, and build quality are awesome. The only issue was the "mount beyer" treble peak. I would listen to guitar solos and they would sound great until hitting that certain note. Way too loud in comparison to the rest. Either way, these are my favorite headphones.
@@fgboii4687 If it's high end like a Samsung Galaxy or Macbook should be no problem. Mediocre laptops/phones may skimp on the headphone output so the 80 ohm may start to distort at loud volumes.
So the 250 ohm version isn't actually more resolving, it just has more present/extended treble, correct? My curiosity has got the better of me. I love the 80 ohm version I just got, but I can't help but want to try the 250 for improved sound.

@@rockman49er was the 2i2 able to drive the 250 ohms? I have heard that the 250 needs 100% monitor volume and it might be still be quieter than wanted, is that the case?
Just got mine , love them , wow what quality ! I use with either a Play 3 or Play 4 DAC. Play 4 is USB-C so works with my A53 5G smartphone. The sound is incredible , after years of using plastic "gaming" headphones. Will buy a separate mic too , when needed.
Yeah regardless of how much bass each unit has anymore for the 80 ohm, the big difference is definitely that the 250 ohm not only has more treble but the air elevates in addition to the treble spike. Regardless of variation, this characteristic above 10k has been pretty consistent with 250 vs 80 in my experience. I keep around a decade old or so DT770 80 ohm because the soundstage is immense and the bass is so much fun. K371 is a much better headphone for hearing what was actually recorded
Or you can try the Custom Studio which is supposed to be just a DT770 80 ohm but with an adjustable bass port and removable cable from the factory. Not sure why there isn't more hype behind it
@@metal571 think the adjustable Bass is for many a no go in terms of seriosness. The Feature has a toy charakteristic. I have my 80 Ohm Version, since many years and it did never bother me. Since over a year a use my Elegia as closed back, though coming back from time to time is always fun
I've wanted to try the Custom Studio for a while because of the removable cable mostly. But the price has generally put me off, I mean if its basically a 770, I'm not sure a removable cable and bass ports are worth 50% more cash. It is probably a neater solution than drilling holes in the chassis for a mod, but maybe less fun?
The issue with pad degradation is intractable really. I've been using Senn HD580s (with HD600 grilles) for almost 20 years which have similar pads to the DT 770, and it's always a (welcome) surprise how much the bass improves in quantity and extension when I replace them (on the fourth set so far). I've just ordered DT 770 Pro 250's because (after all these years) I fancy a bit more bass extension occasionally (I've started to really appreciate the double-kick work that many contemporary hard rock drummers use - love the "serene swan" effect when they seem to leisurely keep time on the kit while machine-gunning intricate 1/16th-note fills/patterns with the kick). ETA >> if you read this, have you considered how the two different versions are interacting with the amp used? Have you tried multiple amps? I'm using a fairly refined Cmoy (opamp) design with a 24v (Li-ion battery) supply and split rail (IOW +12/-12V), and although it should theoretically be fine with 80 ohms I know that ultimately it has limitations in it's current headroom (because of the rail splitter chip) and should be better with the 250 ohm load which I why I went with them (but probably going to swap the cable for a straight one).
For people like me with not so good and trained ears, I consider a headphone with big bass (but CLEAR and FAST) and high peak around 8-10k, to detect the sibilance much more easier when I mix, a blessing. Ordered this today - eager to “see” how it sounds!
Interesting. What amp were you using for the testing of the 250Ohm? Considering they are tough to drive, maybe that had an impact? I've had a different experience than you. I bought my first 80Ohm set of DT770 Pro's in early 2009. It was my first good set of headphones, replacing my old cheap and beaten up 1990's vintage Sony MDR CD250's I inherited from my dad. When I first got my 80ohm set in 2009, I struggled with them. I thought the highs were harsh and sibilant enough to make me cringe at times. The Head-Fi forums peeps suggested I "break them in" with pink noise. I didn't actually believe this would do anything but I gave it a try, running them for a week straight with pink noise on a loop. I'm not convinced that did anything, but over time I got used to them. It was probably a case of breaking in my ears more than it was breaking in the headphones. That said, I bought the 80hom version specifically because I wanted to run them straight out of the 3.5mm line out on my laptop and iPod. Back then dedicated DAC's and headphone amps were - shall we say - less prevalent than they are today. Like you, I prefer open backed headphones for music listening, (this is what I use my Sennheiser HD650's, or rather, the Massdrop HD6xx version for) but I like to keep a closed set around for when things are noisy. These days, I have a decent DAC (Second gen multibit Schiit Bifrost 2) hooked up with balanced cables (to avoid noise) to a first gen Schiit Jotunheim. The Jotunheim has ample power, so a couple of years ago, I decided to pick up a set of 250ohm set to see how they differed. Side by side, I find them pretty similar. The 250Ohm set is maybe a little bit more civilized, and I think I like them better, but it is really very close. (Yes, I used new pads for the comparison) To your point, this may be up to unit variance. Who knows.
I wish there were more resources to explain the sound of the 32 and 16 ohm version. I got the 16 ohm version as a gamble for $60 and I enjoy the sound and durability. However, nobody talks about since it was an exclusive for Guitar Center.
I'm so torn! These, or the K371s? I'm not looking for a super neutral set. Rather, I'm looking for something with a fun signature. Something I can enjoy bassy music, and big dumb action movies with. Would you recommend these?
Thanks for the video ! I see the boss katana in some shots, are you using the 770dt 80 ohm with this as well ? I have the 990 which I use with my katana and my helix, but I find them too bassy and a bit muddy. The rule of thumb for the helix is 12ohm x 8 > 96 ohms impedance for the headphones. Would you still recommend the 80 ohms for that usage, or rather the 250?
Yes you do deserve more subs than this for sure. Subscribed. Quick question, does the 80ohm version work well on the focusrite solo you have behind you? I bought the dt700 250ohm version and the focusrite was not enough for them, they were not loud at all so I returned them. I wasn't gonna buy a headphone amp...
You probably would have been fine with the 80 ohm. They aren’t that hard to drive, just slightly more than an average set of 32 ohm headphones meant for listening on a phone or whatever. Pretty much anything will sound better with a proper headphone amp, but it would definitely work
A very nicely done review...straight to the point...I'm planning to buy one, would you recommend these (80ohms) or some other pair for watching movies where clear vocals is the utmost requirement without having to crank up the volume too high and/ or focusing too hard? Would I require a headphone amplifier to drive these or should I go for the 32 ohm version?
@@aditya50499 if all you care about is vocals then you'll want something more mid range focused like a Sennheiser hd600 series headphone, since that's the part of the frequency spectrum where voices live

I want to use this with an LG CX television. Is it possible to connect an amplifier to this television via optical, USB or 3.5 mm cable? And would this just work well with these headphones? If so, do you have any recommendations or can you recommend some products? Thanks in advance
Just snagged a 80ohm version for $30 tonight. When I see a deal on headphones I buy them. Nothing fancy. SONY V6, SHP9500 x5, M50X, M40X x2 and now DT770 Pro 80ohm.
Can i just plug them in my pc or do i need a audio interface if yes wich one would you recommend under 50$ ?(yes i know im a complete noob when talking about audio)
The 80 ohm will probably be fine in terms of loudness with just plugging into your PC, but the better dac/amp included in an audio interface will be beneficial when using these headphones.
The 80 ohm ones are fine off of a pc, but you should probably get an amp because pretty much everything will sound better with one and you might need it for quieter music. Btw, audio interfaces are for using microphones and things like that, I’m pretty sure you’re just talking about an amp. A decent usb powered dac/amp is all you need for something like this. I don’t have any recommendations because I haven’t bought an amp in years so idk what’s good rn, but I hope I at least gave you a decent starting point to do some research
rickert ik, I have an interface that I use for connecting my guitars to my computer and it has a headphone amp. But most people don’t need one because they just use usb or 3.5mm microphones running straight into their computer for voice chat and that’s about it. It makes more sense in that case to just get a dedicated headphone amp because it’ll usually be cheaper, and a lot of the time interface amps are pretty weak so you’d get a better amp for less money. The amp in my interface is about half as powerful as a usb powered dac/amp I have that was a little over half the price
Pads... I have got some more pads from Aliexpress and the sounds changes dramatically. I settled on this pair of pleather pads with memory foam and gel tops. I cut some cardboard rings spacers and inserted them in the pads. I stopped sounding muffled, the highs weren't piercing anymore but the bass seems slightly rolled off but that's absolutely fine. My DT770s are still bassy enough and now they are incredibly comfortable.
@@attawa3339 cheap really depends on your particular budget and what you need to drive, but I would recommend somethings like the fiio Q1, dragonquest usb dacs, etc...
Everyone talking bout amps. Bro, get a good soundcard (Native etc.). Better sound overall and can drive up to 600Ohms and relief your laptop from the soundprocessing.
Thank you for your video, but I have a question. How did you carry out the frequency response test?, all I can gather is that the two responses are relative, but not knowing what the response of the microphone that sampled the curve was, it is impossible to ascertain the correct curve. As an old fart from a professional recording background, I thought I should point this out. From my research, I found out that the 80 Ohm version has a longer voice coil former so that the 80 Ohm version can have longer excursions (ie be louder) and still be within the magnetic flux. Difficult to explain verbally, much like trying to explain architecture by smell. Industry standard frequency response microphones are made by B&K and cost a fortune, they are used to accurately measure frequency response. Sorry I'm waffling. I love the 770 Pros 80 ohm. Before I always used the Sennheiser Professional HD 25, but have found their construction leads to problems. The plugs into their drivers fail which leads to them being terrible to use. I changed over to the Beyerdynamics and have not had any problems since. I listen at high volume and the comfort of the 770's is perfect for long and detailed listening. I would recommend the 770 Pro 80 ohm. Waffle over, and out. :-))
I suspect a lot of this comes down to individual variances during manufacturing and not the impedance of each model. I just replaced an 80 ohm set with tame highs that were perfect for all-day music listening (and that I should have never sold in the first place) with another 80 ohm, and these new ones are painfully bright. I've personally found the change in sound signature when replacing the pads to be extremely minor, though this could be because the adhesive failed long before the foam collapsed both times I needed to replace them.
I love these cans.. only problem. not detachable cable. renders the cans useless when they break, wire or the trs plug.. mini-xlr's are in most of the new cans, BD DT700 Pro X are already set up with the mini XLR detachable cable port.. (i just found your repair video... going to try it.. if I mess them up, then they are still defunct and unusable.. but lets see how steady my soldering hand is)... thank you for that modification video.. awesome.

Great all round package for a closed back. I sold my sennheiser 58x because of the dt770 80 ohm. I can add that the creative play 3 pairs amazingly well with the dt770. For 15 bucks it’s a no brainer.
You will definitely need a dac/amp to make the most out of it. Get a $100 dac and $100 amp (jds labs atom stack, schiit audio, etc.). On my old audioengine d1 dac/amp combo, it wasn’t enough.
I need your advice! I am a family guy who have used the Sennheiser HD700 for a long time. With kids running around and noise in general i kinda want to invest in a closed back headset and this one have gotten so much appraise from everyone. But the question is, could this be good enough to replace HD700? I am not a studio guy, i like to listen to music and game with them. I am perfectly happy with the HD700's but kinda want some noise isolation. But if i sacrifice too much of sound quality im not sure, also HD700 is known for theyre great sound stage ...... not sure :o
@Wheezy Tech How are you powering yours 250ohm version? What you describe sounds to me like an under power issue. If you are using that Focusrite on the background that won't be enough to drive the 250ohm up to it's maximum potential. This being said I also own the 80ohm.
You mean that some people might attribute pad wear as 'burn in' when its actually the pads changing thickness with age and affecting sound? That's a good point, I think most headphones are affected by this to some degree, but the 770's are one of those where its really quite a stark change as they wear.
Very helpful..What would be a good closed back specifically for music monitoring/reference only?? Specifically for recording of piano instrumentals in studio setting? They have very high dynamic range and note separation. Looking for something airy and crispy, but must be closed back, unfortunately. I have open backs and speakers for personal listening though. Ty

Hello Mr, I want to buy the 80 ohms byro dynamic headphones and use it for mobile devices without an amp, do you think it will still sound beautiful and loud?
1 of the big selling points of these for me was the extra long uncoiled cord, however, after a year's use, the cord has become curled in 2 separate large areas. Are there any tips to uncurl it and get it straight again. When I try to pull it straight, it just curls back into a permanent coil.

Ouch, thats some crazy price differences, its no where near that much in the UK at least. The biggest price jump is between the CAL at about £60 and the DT770/K371 which are about £100 now. The CAL is great but very cheap and plasticky feeling, so in terms of build not in the same league as the 770, but in terms of sound, well a lot of people will tell you its the best you can get for that price.
@@WheezyTech Indeed, I've owned the CALs for years and, while I love them, they literally disintegrate over time, there is more tape than headphone on my head right now. Tha's something I was trying to avoid for my next purchase, but I don't want to spend double the price for something that's ultimately not going to be a significant sound quality upgrade. @@fgboii4687 If it's high end like a Samsung Galaxy or Macbook should be no problem. Mediocre laptops/phones may skimp on the headphone output so the 80 ohm may start to distort at loud volumes.

Yeah I think once I've done the cable mod on the 80 Ohm, my old 250 Ohm is being retired
@@WheezyTech didn't know it was that much cash. Put the COPP and DT250/80 on your list for later though
Great review! I'm after these or the D990 Pro for movie watching. Which out of the 2 would you recommend?
The background music sounds just like my Alarm, i was uncomfortable all the video 🤣

Would you recommend these better than the AKG K371?
(Yes, I used new pads for the comparison)
To your point, this may be up to unit variance. Who knows.
Nice video Bro - Thx for the feedback with the DT 770's
Should I get the 80 ohms or the 250 ohm version for casual music listening with my ifi hip amplifier?
Do I need amp if I’m going to play cod or can I just put it into my monitor or pc
you need an amp
if you have a newer motherboard, you'll be fine; if not then get a budget amp
Grab a headphone amp like the fiio k3 if you have 80ohm, it will do the job very well
I wish there were more resources to explain the sound of the 32 and 16 ohm version. I got the 16 ohm version as a gamble for $60 and I enjoy the sound and durability. However, nobody talks about since it was an exclusive for Guitar Center.
Would you recommend the 32ohms as a guitar headphones plugged in to a Boss Katana 50 MK2? or the 80?
I'm so torn! These, or the K371s? I'm not looking for a super neutral set. Rather, I'm looking for something with a fun signature. Something I can enjoy bassy music, and big dumb action movies with. Would you recommend these?

So i have both, but im hearing that the different colored pads can actually change the sound, have you heard this as well?
Anyone know how they sound without a pre-amp? Considering getting them to mix on the go
I ended up getting the 32ohm to be safe, and they're crystal clear. Never got to hear the 80ohm tho

Can i use 80ohm for a laptop?
Yeah without problems with those ones. But like always we recommend a great amp/dac for a better experience
@@trixniisama do you have cheap amp recommend?

They need a good breaking in before the sound really comes true i found after a couple weeks they sounded a bit warmer
I love these cans.. only problem. not detachable cable. renders the cans useless when they break, wire or the trs plug.. mini-xlr's are in most of the new cans, BD DT700 Pro X are already set up with the mini XLR detachable cable port.. (i just found your repair video... going to try it.. if I mess them up, then they are still defunct and unusable.. but lets see how steady my soldering hand is)... thank you for that modification video.. awesome.

@Wheezy Tech How are you powering yours 250ohm version? What you describe sounds to me like an under power issue. If you are using that Focusrite on the background that won't be enough to drive the 250ohm up to it's maximum potential. This being said I also own the 80ohm.
the wear might explain the "burn in period"
You mean that some people might attribute pad wear as 'burn in' when its actually the pads changing thickness with age and affecting sound? That's a good point, I think most headphones are affected by this to some degree, but the 770's are one of those where its really quite a stark change as they wear.
