- The fairy tales Disney became famous for and exposed to children generation after generation we actually based on some real horror stories that the family friendly company decided to leave out the bad parts. Well in today's video we're going to look at what the original rated fairy tales were like. We're taking a look at the origin of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Cinderella and Pied Piper.

Some of our modern movies are terrifying whilst others are just plain disappointing
even the “sanitized” version of the Pied Piper is still very shady and creepy, by any standards. A man luring children away from their families against the will of their parents... if any story in todays news started with that, people would be ready to call Chris Hansen.
I heard that the Pied Piper story was inspired by the so-called "Children's Crusade," whereby young boys and girls were recruited to take part in the Holy Crusades of the Middle Ages (the wars waged to drive the Muslims out of the Holy Lands, which were the areas in Palestine where Jesus lived and preached). I don't know if these children voluntarily joined the Crusades or if they were forced to do so, but it's said that most of them didn't survive the wars, so their parents never saw them again -- just the way the people of Hamlin never saw their offspring again when they were lured away by the Pied Piper.

I learned as a child (around 6th grade) that it was referring to The Black Death, where people put posies in their pockets to mask the smell.

And how is Rocka by Baby soothing? Remember the scene from the Simpsons where Maggie literally dreams of being rocked from a treetops and fallng to her doom?
Head, shoulders, knees and toes sound like parts from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The Grimm versions were, surprisingly for many people today, often already "cleaned up".
I had a Danish Grandfather and was raised with most of the "true" versions. He loved the Ice Witch story and was glad he never lived to see Frozen become a thing.

As a kid I had a thickest book of original fairy tales, half of them was depressed and horrific, but other half was tame.
"Shoemakers and little helpers", "the bear and princess" or "A man with bear coat " are heart-warming and educational tales. Im not sure if the titles are correct, but I think you get it.

Most of the people won't believe me, but in my school there was actually a pied Piper of Hamelin story let me tell
"There was a beautiful place known as "Hamelin" But the people where suffering from a lot of Rats, they bit the babies, ate alot. Then one day there came a man, they called him pied Piper, he said that if you give me 3000 gold coins i will take all the rats with me, then the mayor of Hamelin agreed, he played his soft tune and with all the rats went away and drowned them. Then the next day pied Piper came back to the mayor, but the mayor said that all he did could have been done by anyone and yes he didn't give the 3000 gold coins, pied Piper got really angry and said "You are going to regret it"
The mayor laughed and kicked him out of his office, then once again the angry Piper blew a darker tune and this time the children started following him, he took him to the cave and locked them there forever." Crazy right? But actually it was the story I learned 🤣

Finding about these dark origins never ruined my childhood at all.
Even as a kid, there were moments when in tv shows I got so annoyed with some major and minor characters, especially those that were purposely supposed to be annoyingly and naively dumb, that I wished for something something darker to happen, or in my kid mind, I wanted them gone.
Since they were tv shows they didn't have dark origins like the Disney fairy tails but then again that's enough. Plus there are fanarts now too
In the brothers grim version of Cinderella (I have the book so I know this) the stepsisters cut their feet fingers to fit in the shoes, and get their eyes eaten by birds. Also there is no fairy godmother, Cinderella asks her father to get her an oak sapling and then plants it on her real mother's grave. The sapling grows and when Cinderella gets the clothing she goes under the oak tree and prays to her mom and that tree to quote-unquote: "cover her with clothes and riches". Just was thinking some would be interested.

To be fair, I've read (and been read to) the Grimm Brothers' version of the tale about Snow White, and the part where the queen orders to receive Snow White's lungs and liver as proof of death did not seem so horrible to me (and to many kids from the region) for some reason. I may or may not be recalling correctly that the huntsman felt sorry for Snow White and told her to run away while he killed some other animal and used its organs for the "evidence".

Actually most grim stories are much easier to read when you're a kid.
I'm reminded of an episode of The Simpsons where Homer changes the end of Lisa's favorite book series to spare a character she loves. She apparently knew this was changed by Homer, but she replies "Dad's version was better." I think a lot of these stories had various changes over the years and since it isn't always easy to zero in on the original author of these folk tales it becomes very easy to change them.

I actually read the Grimm brothers version before the more kids friendly ones when I was seven (had a full book) and thought those versions was totally appropriate for kids as I enjoyed it and not frightened at all. Now that I read those stories again, well, Cinderella's sisters having their feet chopped or the Queen wanting to eat Snow White's liver is way too disturbing and horror.
The Cinderella dark version, I've watched one when i was a kid.
I remember exactly that the two stepsisters cut their feet to fit inside the shoe and the birds that chasing them want to pluck their eyes out in the end. That's really dark but i somehow like it better than the Disney version. Kid me think it's scary but somehow beautiful.

If Hollywood want to make a movie about the dark version of the fairytales then for sure. 10/10 will watch.

I'm glad Disney sanitized their fairy tales. These early original versions would give kids nightmares today.
I never knew Snow White had roots in real life. Most fairy tales were a reflection of the times they were written in.
There was a version of Cinderella where it was the stepsisters who cut off parts of their feet to fit the glass slipper. And when the Prince takes them on his horse, the birds would tell him about the blood on the ground.

I always thought that Cinderella was a German tale Aschenputtel but yeah I knew the version of the birds pecking out the stepsisters eyes. One of the fairy tale books my parent got me had this version in it.

There are many many many versions of red Riding Hood way way way way back. There is no original. It's from mouth to ear
People can trace that kinda stuff back nowadays with various advanced techniques. Not everything tho, but perpetuated tales tend to get written down.

I once saw an animated film on the Russian version of the Snow White tale. It wasn't much different, but instead of a cabin in the woods, it was a hunting cottage, and instead of dwarves, there were seven, seven feet tall, Cossacks princes.
Oh, and if you want messed up, just look for the original version of Hansel and Gretel. It's quite... There are no words :D

The last time I was this early Medieval Fantasy was still a genre for children.
The most famous fairy tales were written by The Brothers Grimm
They didn't write them, they adapted them from old folk tales,and they actually missed most of the gore out. I did a study on fairy tales and apparently they were originally " healing" stories for children

4:45 Actually I had this version of Snow White in a story book but it was still blended with the 7 dwarfs, the queen being a witch, etc.
Though I would lean towards the originals, I still want lessons to be taught from them. For example: “Little Red Riding Hood talks to Strangers”; pretty self explanatory & how potentially dark it might become & such…
