- Do you ever feel excited to ride but realize the rest of you wasn't on board? That was my day at Walnut Creek. I still powered through and conquered some features and trails that I hadn't in the past!

Even on an off day, you went full enduro. Was awesome to see you nail those features!
I really did feel a little more brave even though I was tired haha. Thanks for towing me in!
Amazed to see so many people and their dogs. I usually go mid week and have the whole place to myself.
I’d love to get out there on a weekday. It’s so packed you can’t even park on weekends.
Oh snap...the log structure on Mark's Art @4:47. Yeah that intimidated me for months. Finally, went for it and it is not so bad. Funny story when i did it the first time. I was adjusting myself on the turn leading up to the log structure. Well a female rider came out of nowhere on the otherside of the trail (Tangle of Trails @5:05) and saw what I was doing. I got embarrassed as I did not want the female rider to think I was some creeper feeling himself. So I took off as fast as I could. And before i knew what happened, I was battling the climb right after the log structure. Ha!
I despise off days. Had one yesterday and it is such a demotivating feeling. Regardless a bad day of riding is still a good day!
I haven't been on a real ride since this and I recorded this a few weeks ago. I'm assuming all of the pollen is really getting to me, I'm a little tired every day lately lol. All that said, I agree its much better to be riding than not! At least there were no injuries haha.
Thanks for the cool Vid. I agree , If someone knows some better MTB trails in Texas , please share. I live in Austin and blown away by having Walnut Creek in my backyard .
Your off day is my great day! Hadn't done Walnut Creek until the other day with friends, and was last in line when they dropped off something I usually walk, but I was already committed to it since stopping at speed wasn't an option, so I dropped and made it. Wish I shot it, but it was run and gun when I got the invite to go, so no video doc. Generally, I have to break the first 15 min riding energy slump before I get into gear for the rest of the day, or that is until I get really tired on the way back to the car and start making those easy technical mistakes that could spell disaster, so I dial it down.
Dogs, Walkers, kids, 1000 other MTB riders, lack of energy...The Nut is still fun
hahah it sure is! I wish it was closer to me, I'd go more often.
Pretty solid off day! So many great trails.
It could have been worse for sure. Heck, if anything I did better than I would have feeling normal haha!
That little downhill at 5:30 is so much fun
It's definitely a highlight of the trails there. You can go really fast and its got a decent line of sight so you're less likely to run into hikers...or dogs haha
I definitely dial back the intensity on off days. I ride green trails or even pavement to relax. Yes, relax. Some off days, I think, are caused by anxiety or distraction, which can be cured with relaxation. Then, if I feel my energy return I continue the main ride, otherwise I go home.
Yeah it’s smart to not go full on when you’re feeling off haha.
Great video. I certainly have had those days. I carb up before a ride. I ride Walnut Creek a couple days a week.
I definitely don't eat the right stuff before rides sometimes. Its crazy how quickly that will catch up with me. Its almost a delicate balance, too much of something will screw me up and too little food will cause me to be tired too early.
well it depends, If I know I'm having an off-day before the ride, I usually try to get in a short nap, which almost always does the trick for me. if not, I'll just power through it haha
hahah I didn't even realize I wasn't feeling 100% until I got out there. I'm still happy with how the ride went, I could go for another burrito lol!
@@ChrisCXK burritos are always a good idea!!
Great video. We love Walnut Creek Park. Be sure to eat a meal of light carbs before a long ride, ex oatmeal, pasta, rice, banana, or a protein shake.
I can't remember what I ate that day. I think part of the issue was we took forever to get started. I probably ate early and then we decided to make the drive up. By the time I started riding I was probably hungry lol. I hope to get back out there soon!
Nice! You got the log over! Looks like a really fun and fast trail!
Never heard of a Chuy.
If I have an off day I usually see if it improves with breathing exercises. If not, I call it quits. I have had too many times where I would ride in only to get injured. Great video Chris.
I'm glad I did it. I've passed on it two other times. If you ever visit this part of Texas you'll have to check it out...as long as you're into mexican food. I should try some breathing exercises next time. I'm thinking it was all of the pollen in the air. I haven't been on a ride in weeks, this time of year is always rough for my allergies. Thanks for watching Ben!
I still need to get down there to ride this trail!
Yea! Its a fun, not too difficult trail. I'll join you if you go, I'm sure Kyle would like to go back.
If I'm riding solo and not feeling 100% I'll skip the hard stuff and set a milage goal. At least get some cardio in. But it's better to have buddies around to push you.
I've definitely done that. If I'm not feeling it, I typically skip things that could get me hurt haha. I used to ride alone all of the time, outside of the random group ride I'd join. I was fine with it but now that I've started riding with friends, I think its much more fun and they do push you.
@@ChrisCXK I went over the bars there and laid on the trail until some guys found me.
Saw you were hitting 20mph at some parts. That's crazy. I hit a tree going that fast. Damn thing just jumped out of nowhere. Must hate mountain bikers. Saw my whole life flash before my eyes.
Nice, and hey now I recognize some of that stuff! haha
haha hopefully I can join you next time you're in town.
Im so spoiled to be in San Diego, I love Austin and the only think keeping me from moving is Mountain biking. Seem like there are not many trails in Austin.
There are way more interesting trails within Austin - if you like very rocky technical riding. Might be a difficult transition from San Diego.
Where’s 3:15 trail head? I’m new to area and so far this place is my favorite but don’t really know my way around
Amazing! Can you do a video of the walnut bmx track? I was there earlier today!
It's made an appearance in a couple of videos. This one shows me failing at the jumps haha ruclips.net/video/51P4HqIcGzM/видео.html The quality wasnt great since i was still using the Rylo.
Creamy Jalapeno FTW!!!
Oh man I read this comment and wanted some immediately haha. I've been such a lazy fatty lately I should just start filling my hydration bag with it haha
Chris CXK we have a recipe and make it by the batch at home. 😂
For me, over the past year there have been plenty of rides that seemed to be off days. I don't know why. But I keep on going. Get slower and slower on the ups and be really careful on the downs. I don't think I've ever not loved it.
I can relate, last year it started raining a ton around September 1st. I had big plans to enjoy the fall temperatures but nearly every ride or goal I had was ruined by wet trails. I eventually stopped considering riding as an option haha. I was worried I’d lost my love for it. It looks like I was wrong but I’m certainly slower after all of that time off.
Walnut was the first place I ever went mountain biking! I’ve been meaning to get back out there but it seems it’s been raining every time I’ve had a chance. Did you do the step up climb out of Endo Valley? Nice video!
I wish I had started at Walnut, I would have been a better rider haha. It’s more challenging than my home trail. I’m the worst climber, i gave it a shot but failed. Thanks for checking the video out!
Chris CXK Yeah it took me a long time to be able to get it and a really long time to get it consistently. I’d session it every time I’d go out. Sorry I had to ask about it. It’s one of those features that really set me on a path to do more and more technical riding. Cheers!
Haha i remember the last time i had chuy’s i ate a giant trough of food at my gf’s house 😂😂
Hahahah
I power through it. if I just give up and turn around, I end up regretting not riding when I get home.
I agree. I also drove 65 miles to ride there so I wasn’t definitely not turning around haha
@@ChrisCXK yeah! Lol that's definitely different than a 15 minute drive!
Where is the log feature?
I’m not 100% sure but it’s after you cross the river, ride up the hill a bit and it’s on the left somewhere.
@@ChrisCXK It is part of the Marks Art area

The main trail map did not highlight the Marks Art off of Tangle of Trails but this one from the Austin Ridge Riders has it.
Allowing dogs to run unleashed all over trails. How about ski runs? Makes almost as much sense.
