I must say I had almost lost interest in Diana Damrau in the last few years since she seemed to have done considerable damage to her voice by singing unsuitable roles with an unfinished technique. In this, I find she has regained a lot of control over her instrument. The voice (which, of course, some people might not prefer in this rep) sounds much younger, brighter, and has better focus and support. The ugly vibrato she displayed in recent years has almost vanished, and she breathes more purposefully. Her trill has a direction and the legato phrases are beautifully executed (3:16!). In the cabaletta, I feel there is still strain on the high notes, but, here as well, she has reduced the pressure she used to excercise. Brava. Thanks for posting this!
Singing while being ill and under medication (as it happened to her a lot in the last few years), in order to respect her contract with the opera houses, wasn't easy for her. But I think with the quarantine she had lots of time to rest and to study, maybe even to rethink her entire repertoire.
Also, didnt she just recently have children?

@@crazy_Fred war sie nicht stark erkrankt und hatte Ödeme an ihren Stimmbändern, die nur langsam und durch starke Medikamente erst wieder abheilen mussten? Plus ist sie Mutter zweier Kinder geworden. Ich finde ihre Stimme, ihren Belcanto, ihren Kollaraturgesang, ihre Interpretationen großartig. Neben Montserrat "la Superba" Cabalé und Dame Joan "la Stupenda" Sutherland die schönste Performance der Casta Diva. Allerdings ist die Version von Montserra Cabalé 1974 in LÓrange unübertroffen!!!!!!
You all haters, every artist has its journey and at the end of the day, she is the one singing on a stage with an orchestra behind her projecting the gift God has given her. She is the one that matters.

La voce della Damrau non è una voce "da Norma". È molto "piccola" per una partitura da soprano lirico-drammatico spinto che sfiora quasi il
mezzosoprano.

People, she is 50 years old. Come on! She isn't 30 anymore. I would love to see these keyboard trolls even sing one note as good as her. Everyone is a vocal expert now. lol
Age has nothing to do with it. Although if she's going through menopause that could be a factor. However listen to Mariella Devia at 70+ sing the same aria.

At 50 even 60 , Mariella Devia sang 1000 times better and all of it due to her impeccable technique!

I like opera ! For me, it's always about the voices ... & like many fans ... I always like to hear my favorite singer ... sing something not in their rep. ... just to try it ... just to hear it ... _from_ a favorite singer ( I always wanted to hear L.P. sing _Dalila's_ arias ; she, instead, chose _Casta Diva_ ) !
... so ... people who like Damrau ... would like to hear her sing something she wouldn't normally sing.
... one thing for sure ... she goes real-easy on the jewelry.

Ich kenne ihren Lehrerin, der ihre Koloraturen perfekt gemacht hat, und wir hatten eine stabile technische Damrau. Aber wer sie jetzt kontrolliert, weiß ich nicht. Vielleicht sie selbst. Das Problem, das alle Koloraturen jetzt haben, ist, dass alle leichten Stimmen Norma, Lucia und La Traviata singen wollen. Dann i, Kürze verlieren sie ihre fantastische Spitze, dann die Stimme, dann sich selbst. So haben wir Natalie Dessay verloren..Und einige andere berühmte Koloratursängerinen, die mit 40 Jahren nicht mehr gut einfache С 6 singen können. Schade, sehr schade...

Hey this is coloratura, help a noob with no musical background, what is coloratura?
It's a classification for a female voice. Dramatic Soprano, Lyric Soprano, Spinto Soprano, Leggero Soprano ... and Coloratura Soprano. A Coloratura means she has the most high voice of all sopranos. It means she can go for notes like F6, G6 and go for songs arias like Lakmé.
Operas were not made to every voice, so many roles are wrote to specific voices - like the one I just told. Listen to Lakmé Bell Song or The Magic Flaute and u will easy get. It also means a coloratura must take really care, it's the most rare voice for a soprano and most are singing or traning in a region that can hurt if not worked properly.
Casta Diva most lyric sopranos or dramatic can do.
All voices has classifications - tenors, baritones, mezzo sopranos - but most of the time u just need some accuracy to opera and music theather.
One of the most important thing of coloratura is also that the singers have to sing very fast and complicated melodies - in this case coloratura is also a type of pieces, which are so fast :)
@@augustohenrique547 not exactly. One can also be a coloratura mezzo or a coloratura contralto. It means they have great agility in singing elaborate melodies with runs, trills and leaps (called coloratura themselves). Coloratura sopranos, in addition, usually reach extremely high notes in the soprano range.

It doesn't only apply to sopranos, but to every voice type. It is florid ornamented music
Not exactly bel canto, of course, Damrau's singing school is obviuosly german, not italian, but not for that reason this is bad. I actually like it, it's different. Also, I see she has improved a lot since the bad years she had had. Every opera legend has them at least once. Brava Diana! one of the best coloratura sopranos of history, and one of the most special ones too due to her particular color and power.
She done it quite decent, I give her a pass on this aria. She correct her highnote, no more pulling back. Althought the last high note was a bit lost, I think she is still adapting the technique for Bellini's opera. However, I don't think she still yet to obtain the dramatic quality to make her Norma an exciting opera. Norma is more than sing your own aria, it about the drama, the change in emotion, the distress, the synchronize with your Mezzo, the "divahood" to become The Norma. Otherwise the opera would became an marital crisis soap opera, no one feel pity to the Norma

To be honest, I would say they are on par with each other. But, technically speaking, Diana uses her breath to sing the coloratura which for a performance with a mic will sound more breathy. If she can fix it she would sound better.
Damrau is my favorite soprano. Not just shrill vibrato; her tone has depth.
I think her being out of breath is to add emotions to the song

I believe it's how she produces the voice. I'm not sure who taught her, but it appears that she's a chest and nose breather you can see her purposefully placing the voice in that placement. It wouldn't take long to fix it and the voice would be larger more color etc

She's off pitch from the first phrase and she scoops a lot throughout. She's out of breath a few times and she has no legato...adds some H here and there to fake it. Cabaletta is also messy.....No, just NO.
I found it most revealing to just listen without watching - any singer... Too many times then there is nothing to remember. The visual usually makes it worse. :)
