This was a highlight of a beautiful program which I attended in person many years ago although I remember it well even to this day. These two ladies are among my very favorites and both were in great voice on that day. It was a performance which I doubt could possibly ever be outdone!

I saw this Brahms lied in a Leonard Bernstein documentary, and had to find it. I knew it was a Brahms composition, and managed to find the entire hour-long film of all these recorded songs. At the end, this little piece appeared. I'm so glad this film is on RUclips. 🥰

I know we're never supposesd to say anything bad about Norman. But I want good top notes which she never seemed to have. The last note here is flat. That means a faulty technique. In fact, her whole voice is not aligned properly despite its richness and size. On the plus side, however, the detail and nuance with which she interprets the words of this aria and how she presents herself are done with exquiste taste and intelligence.

She did right to go light on the high notes instead of the "maxed out rooster" sound that most do in this aria nowadays. But then again, they weren't the sound for Turandot.
