I don't know if knowing that Grace Bumbry was succesfull at 24 yo in Bayreuth made the dream accessible, possible, or a reality for young singers. She was such an extraordinary early talent that you could not compare with her. Plus she was a protégée of Lotte Lehmann, and Jackie Kennedy...it doesn't happen often. Since her singing in Bayreuth, only 2 blacks singers sang there, Simon Estes and Gwendolyn Killbrew.
