For me, your channel remains the unchallenged number one railfan channel, hands down! The variety, the locations, your encyclopedic knowledge, the production, editing all make for an enjoyable experience. My compliments and thanks sir! Gord in Winnipeg Canada.
Great to see 2 ATSF Warbonnet leaders and the frankenbonnet! I remember not too long ago it felt like everyone was catching a Warbonnet, this being around the time BNSF pulled many of them out of storage after a while. I’m guessing for the ones that don’t have PTC, it’ll be installed on some that are planned to be rebuilt. Entirely a guess from me.
Im just really getting into railfanning and your videos have been instrumental. Im up in Western Canada so I've never had the pleasure of seeing a warbonnet in person. Also love seeing Canadian units down south.
Great video! I think you are correct about that hypothesis about that Dash 9 with ATSF panels. Because I've noticed that many of BNSF's Dash 9s have ATSF AC units that look brand spankin' new.
very nice video -what a loco, this Frankenbonnet, looks like "neglected" right at the beginning "old Santa Fe depot" -as a foreigner, which city is that? -same question for the train station at 9:10 -thank you
6:45 probably was NS 28X before it got on BNSF. 28X originates in Croxton, NJ. (Norfolk southerns big yard for the New York area) and terminates In Chicago. the way the train is built and the JB-hunt containers make for think that was 28X
The FrankenBonnet got released from the BNSF Topeka Shops just after March 12, 2022. Caught it in the deadline with other WarBonnets just before it got released.
@southernplainsrailfan that franken engine you call it @8:57 there is a person on RUclips that worked on that engine. Look for "hyce" which is his channel name. The engine caught fire so they had to reskin that middle area. They have nicked named the engine "the war pumpkin"
Those are some great catch’s there. It always cool to see the NS leading a train. But here in California there’s some NS leading train’s. I saw one with 2 NS and 1 BNSF Sd70ACe at Corcoran
That Z train with the full NS power is BNSF ZAUGSBD which originates in Charlotte NC and run to San Bernardino CA it's a daily intermodal every now and then you can see NS HUs leading I've seen 2 which are on my channel
Thank you! Some of the places I really want to go are the transcon is western OK, the North-South CN line in central IL, Paducah, KY and Mt. Vernon, IL (they’re both NRE facilities) Inman Yard in Atlanta, and the Florida East Coast RR.
I’m a relative newbie railfan so patience please! What is/what defines a ‘warbonnet’? Ditto frankenbonnet? Anything related to the Indigenous headdress?
The “warbonnet” is a red and silver paint scheme developed by the Santa Fe in the late 30’s for their Super Chief passenger train. Yes, it did take inspiration from Indian headdresses. Any engine wearing that classic red and silver paint job is a warbonnet. Many locomotive models have been painted as such in the near 90 years the paint job has existed. Fakebonnets are still warbonnets, but they say BNSF on the long hood instead of Santa Fe. Some were painted as such (like the 700 and 4700 series Dash-9’s) and others were patched after the merger (like the 500 series Dash-8’s and SD75M’s) Several Dash-9 fakebonnets say Santa Fe on the nose, but they are still considered “fake” because their hood reads BNSF.
@@Southern_Plains_Railfan - Thank you very much!!! I really appreciate your responding, sir. Your reply reflects what I referred to in another post on one of your videos: the benefit your encyclopedic knowledge confers on those who subscribe to your channel!! Thanks again.
How do railroads determine what locomotives go on which train? Do they determine how much HP they need to pull train and just start grabbing whatever idle units are available? Does the Engineer have a say in what locomotive is at the head end or is it up to chance?
Your guess is correct. When a train is made in the railyard, they use a computer program to calculate how much horsepower is needed to pull it. Then, they pretty much take whatever powers available and put it on the train. No, the lead loco is usually up to chance, unless the yard master wants to do something different.
Merch, anyone? okieprint.com/SPR/shop/home
A warbonnet, 100th anniversary CN unit, and a ferromex unit is one of the best lashups I’ve ever seen
Never get tired of seeing Ferromex Units from Mexico. 👍
Yes

Thank you so much!
Franken Bonnett gets around the Midwest and like you said, it’s the only one like it. Always Great to get a Horn or Wave acknowledgement. 👍🙏
Yes, love a hood horn salute and wave!
Great to see 2 ATSF Warbonnet leaders and the frankenbonnet!

Thank what I’m saying! Yes, PTC will be installed on all the rebuilds since it’s a federal requirement now.
Great Frankenbonnet catch!
Thank you!

Beautiful Area to Railfan. 👍
I’ve never seen a Frankin engine I’ve seen a diamond near my town it’s where the BNSF crosses the Union Pacific.
Yeah, the Frankenbonnet is extremely rare. I bet that diamond’s cool.
You are a very lucky person you see all kinds of cool and rare stuff
Great video! I think you are correct about that hypothesis about that Dash 9 with ATSF panels. Because I've noticed that many of BNSF's Dash 9s have ATSF AC units that look brand spankin' new.
Awesome video
Thank you!
Beautiful video with great commentary. Great catches and enjoyable video once again. Have a wonderful rest of your Friday.(Steve)
Thank you so much! You have a Good Friday (and weekend) as well!
@@Southern_Plains_Railfan Your very welcome and thank you also.

@10:55, that Jeep has a burnt ditch light 🙂
On 2:38 what song is that i like it
Shady Grove by Ricky Skaggs
ran that 4729 recently. thing is trashed on the inside
Really? That sucks. Is it trashed as in its falling apart or trashed as in theres literal trash everywhere?

3:53 that panel probably came from a fakebonnet
Nice Video! What type of camera did you use to get the picture of BNSF 4729?
Thanks! I use a Canon T7, it’s my video and photo camera.
he didn't mention the ferromex unit
8:55 not a wreck, it caught fire
1:45 to many engines
