Yes, the songs sounded better with the orchestra. Whenever I watch a ESC recap 1956 - now, I hear the difference in sound when transitioning from 1998 (last year with orchestra) to 1999 (first year without). Music went downhill.

Kararija didn't need the Eurovision trophy - he won the hearts, minds, and ears of the public. reminds me of how Verka came 2nd in 2007 and now he's the one everyone remembers and enjoys the song to this da. Consider how hyper that guy is. Usually he's all over the place like off-stage too, never let anything like his lack of fluency in English stop him, babbling and coming up with new random stuff. Then take a look at his demeanor during the symphonic part. As a performer (esp as a beginner) one tends to tune out during parts that you're not in, such as singers getting bored during the outros, clearly just waiting for the song to end. But this guy comes into this "intro" like straight from a Mozart opera, with veeeery slow movements and playing by his facial gestures, multiplying the drama effect. Had the song stopped there I'd been satisfied. Could watch him strut around ominously like that for way longer.
I love how Eurovision sees pretty well every country try to conform to what everyone else will like, but never the Finns. The Finnish just do their own thing and the world loves them for it. He may not have won the competition, but he won our hearts.
