  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 5 mile circular walk between Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic Coast (South of the village of West Lulworth). Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    The walk can be started from either Durdle Door (car park opens at 9am) or Lulworth Cove ( car park open 24 hours a day).
    I started my walk at the iconic Durdle Door - a natural arch of resistant rock that has become one of the most photographed images in Dorset! After a wander along the beach, I joined the South West Coast Path and made my way to Lulworth Cove (after a short detour to explore the Bronze Age barrow at the top of Hambury Tout).
    Before looking around the hamlet at Lulworth Cove, I visited Stair Hole - a small cove that is in the process of being formed to the West of Lulworth Cove itself.
    My route then took me on a section of the Hardy Way around the shoreline of the cove before heading uphill to Bindon Hill and then on to Pepler's Point.
    After a visit to the “Fossil Forest” (the remains of a submerged Forest from the Jurassic Period), I continued Eastward towards Mupe Bay. I was hoping to explore the Smuggler's Cave in Bacon Hole but had to abort my attempt due to the rocks (it was just too tricky with all my camera gear as well as looking after Logan). However, I did manage a lovely stroll along the beach at Mupe bay.
    My return journey took me past the tiny chapel that is close to where the old Bindon Abbey was once located (now long gone).
    My final destination was The Lulworth Cove Inn for light refreshments!
    I should point out that both Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove are very popular tourist destinations and can get VERY busy at times. Both beaches are dog friendly.

    I visited Luworth Cove many times in the 60s,when parking was FREE. But it's a glorious place to be sure. Thanks to you both for your hard work on those steep climbs

    What dedication to duty Dave, on the beach at 7.00 a.m. and in the pub at the end!. Lovely walk on a gorgeous day. The "purple" flowers above Durdle Door were Red Valerian I think, could be wrong, they weren't in close-up. I again commend your effort, down and back up from the beach at Durdle Door, down and up at the Fossil Forest and at Mupe Bay and all the back and fro' for the filming. And then had to walk back to the car, I bet you had more than one Fursty Ferret! Must keep up the stamina. All your efforts are much appreciated, keep 'em coming.

    That's quite correct Tears for Fears and Cliff Richard both filmed their videos at Durdle Door, but more significantly and importantly it was the start point for one of Dave and Logan's famous walks.

    What a wonderful walk and video Dave! Very interesting I have been visiting Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove since the mid 1960s. Even as a kid I thought it looked like a dinosaur drinking from the ocean. Some of the hills around there can be heavy going as I'm not as fit as I'd like to be at the moment. Back in the early days it wasn't such the hot spot and tourist trap it's now become. But it's still one of the many icons of Dorset! I intend to visit there during the next week. And finish off with some fish and chips and a nice cool pint! Cheers! 😊🍺

    One of my favourite areas of swcp but usually very busy! Only once when I stayed at Lulworth Youth Hostel and set off very early have I seen Durdle Door with no one on beach. You still managed to show me some new things I had not seen. Have you done the smugglers path from White Nothe? Looks like you both enjoyed your day at the seaside!

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  Год назад +1

      Yes, we both enjoyed our day there. We passed the top of the Smugglers Path when we did a video that included White Nothe ..... but it looked far too steep for us to attempt!
