This explanation works ONLY for independent suspensions. NOT for rigid axles who travel more in full extend/compress on one side only. Be aware!
The best way to determine the correct shock length is to measure the collapsed and extended length and target the middle of those dimensions for when the truck is driving down the road. Try to avoid ever fully collapsing or extending the shock to avoid shock failure!
Excellent description. I purchased a used Jeep Wrangler with unknown amount of spring lift and spray painted shocks which are worn. Now I can measure for replacements. Thanks!
+Curt Lane,
Thank you for watching!
Great vid..You almost answered my question about correct shock length and compression/ rebound travel.87. 5.0 Mustang,( solid axle) qa 110 rear coil overs keeps rupturing shocks. (Strange 10 ways and Lakewood 50/50s so far)Checked with qa1, spring rate is within range for car.Measured shock from mount to 1st insulator and got 15 inches. What rear shock length will be correct to eliminate this issue? Thanks!
I have lowered my truck. This video was very helpful in describing the measurement of the front shocks, but what about the rear? I have coil springs on the rear (1965 Chevy C-10).
Thanks!
I lowered the front of my 1975 Pontiac Catalina 3 inches. As you stated I don't want my new Shock's to bottom out before my suspension. Is it as easy as buying 3 inch smaller shock's. Thank you
Hi, I'm working on a custom trike project using a 01 3.4 Grand Am drivetrain where I have a lot of unknown variables when it comes to Coilover shocks. My problem is selecting the correct coil when I don't know the overall weight of the engine and cradle, I can ballpark it around 700 lbs +/-.
Hi Wadesta11,
Give us the part number of the shock and if it is a brand we carry we can look up the manufacturer’s specs in their catalog or on their website. Thanks!
Hi Al, how would I measure for coil-over shocks using a Chevy 10 bolt rear, total weight, wet, would be about 650# per wheel.
Hi Thumper,
With the vehicle level and at ride height; measure from the upper to the lower shock mount, write it down. Then measure from the tip of the bump stop (travel limiter) to its contact point, write it down. Call our tech line and give them those 2 dimensions. They can help you figure out what you’ll need from there! 1-330-630-0240. Thanks for watching!
I have a truck that has air ride suspension so the front end can be lifted or lowered. How would I determine what shock to use?
i have a 2016 jeep jku. its lifted and on 35 inch tires but i dont know the exact lift as i bought it used. my shocks are gone and ill need new ones here very soon. i measuerd the shocks as it sits in the (flat) driveway just now. seems to measure around 23 inches. where do i go from here? THANKS
I have little patience and less time.. So, I purchased the adjustable length shocks. Installed the top mount, and with the car at ride height.. I adjusted the lower mount to hang 2 inches below the shock mounting point on the car. Then compressed the shock onto the mounting stud and zipped on the nut. So basically, two and a half inches of compression, and 2 inches or rebound, depending on the total compression distance of 4.5 inches.
Thank you for watching! :)
Ya, i think we got that... ;/? Why do i feel like this will be an adventure. Thank you for posting! - Karissa
So I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ and I have a 4.5 inch lift with matching shocks , I currently have 31 inch tires and I’m about to do a lot of trimming to fit 35’s , will I need to get bigger shocks for this application?
thanks in advance - -the measurements are made on the angle? or diagonal? from body mount to center of bottom bracket and then center of top of axle to bump stop........correct?
Is it possible to hang these upside down? I got my lugnuts on backwards once in Grade Nine automotive.
So I don't need to jack up the rear of my truck to get the extended measurement?
Since when does "height" have a TH sound?
Thank you for watching! Please feel free to ask any questions or request a specific video :)
How do i explain what mount pin on the bottom of the shock Mine has a pin with flat ends with holes for the bolts. When i google for shocks on my MII they all show a round pin with no holes for the bolts.
If I was to put 26 inch rims on a 97 Chevy pickup ext cab short bed what kind of shocks, parts to make the ride smooth as possible ???
Should your rear shocks be fully extended at all times ? I feel like when I got my 3.25 lift on my Jeep wrangler they put the wrong shocks on . They stay fully extended all the time … it just seems wrong to me and I would like to know if I am just nuts or they put the wrong size shocks on ? If you could please answer I would be most great full. Thank you in advance.
I recently put a 3-inch leveling kit on my 07 classic 1500 Silverado its also 2wd .... i was told i would need new front shocks how would i determine that?
Same, need help
Just bought an 06 silverado. I have skyjacker shocks that are mounted to the upper control arm. Looking to Change shocks cause I have no down travel ib the ones currently installed. Would I still measure for shocks the same way thank you
Sean Schram,
We need some additional information from you. Can you call our tech line? 1-330-630-0240. Thanks!
I measure 18" from top to bottom to mount shocks. How long should I get, about 22" or more, thanks.
Is it okay to remove a leaf on rear leaf springs for lowering. And shoukd I replace the shocks with shorter ones?
Hey todd ! thanks for the question depending on your application of course , a better solution is to start with drop shackles , then if more lowering is required use a set of drop hangers as well. You don't to want sacrifice ride quality and suspension action by removing leaves from the pack. A set of shorter shocks would want to be utilized as well being as you lower the vehicle they run the risk of bottoming on there travel , also could prevent you from getting to your desired height. Hope this helps ! Thanks for watching !
Interesting and informative video. Thank you for it. But if i cant get the extended and compressed lengths of my truck and only had the static ride height, what should i do? I have an off road lifted truck with a 21" ride height. Safe to say you want the extended length and compressed length to be somewhere in the middle? To be able to travel 5" in either direction? Thanks.
Hi plutocrank,
Measure the distance between the shock mounting points when the vehicle is sitting level and then search a shock that has extended and compressed lengths fives inches on either side of that dimension.
Thumper,
Most times on trucks, when you jack them up to measure they will extend beyond what the average shock will allow for extended movement. Not to mention, unless you are jumping the truck, the rear suspension wouldn’t normally see that much extension.
I'm really lost for the last 3 days.my truck has bad coils and bad shocks.i have a 3 inch lift block on factory coils in front and 3 3/4 block in the rear.i need to know what size shocks round about it need I'm not sure if the truck is actually 4 inches in height but I know that block measures that.what size shocks do i need
Hi Cody,
Can you please give our tech line a call? 1-330-630-0240. We need some additional information from you. Thanks for watching!
i have a 95 gmc sonoma on air bags slamed to the ground how would i go about getting the right size shock i need so i dont over exntend or bottom out the shocks.
Hi James Hellums,
Measure the shock mounting point centers at the high & low points and call the tech line with those dimensions. They can match something up for you. Be prepared to possibly modify your stock mount positions if a shock can’t be found right away!
just purchase Monroe shocks when i was installing front ones they when in fully extended only pushing in less than a inch to screw in nuts. is this normal? am I going to bottom out. I have bigger tires so no need jack truck up to install shocks
+Robert Valdez,
Give us a call with a length from mount to mount with the vehicle on the wheels and we can try and match something up for you. 1-330-630-0240.
Thanks for watching!
Lowerd rear leaf springs 6 inches. How do i calculate shock length
I have a 1975 Ford F-150 I lowered the truck by like 12 inches how do I determine the right size shock for the back end?
Angel Caudillo ,
With the vehicle at ride height, measure between the shock mounting points. Pick a shock with an extended length 3-4 inches longer than that so you have some extension as well as compression travel during normal driving.
Thx very helpful
I have a 1965 Chevy C-10 2wd. The front is lowered (with drop spindles). The rear is lowered (with shorter coil springs). Here are the shock measurements for which I need shocks.
Front:
Compressed - 10.5”
Extended - 14”
Rear:
Compressed - 13.375”
Extended - 15”
Can you help me decide? This truck, while beefy in performance (5.3l LS), is a daily driver. I think I would prefer monotube from what I read.
Hi Thumper Pigg,
For an affordable monotube shock that mounts in the stock location; the Monroe Gas Magnums would be an excellent choice. The fronts are a part number MON-34817 and cost $38.97 each. The rears are a part number MON-34803 and the cost is $33.97 each. If you had something else in mind or the mounting points differ from stock, feel free to give us a call.

Anytime, Thumper Pigg! Have a great weekend!
Wat kar is gud?
nice!
What does travel length(in) mean?
+cmac8985 ,
When a shock is mounted, it has a certain amount of distance that it can travel in either direction. This is known as travel length or stroke.
could you tell me about the way to measure the shocks
That's the first thing they say ...
thank you
Thank you for watching!
i thought it was a good thing for your shock to bottom out slightly before your chassis did. shocks are easily replaceable, over travel into other parts aren't. maybe I'm wrong but i would rather the shocks take the brunt of the force than the rest of the system.
my name is No that's what bump stops are for, you never wanna bottom out your shocks.
cool
How would I measure if it's still on my car? Smh
This helps with the front but doesnt help with the rear which is what I need ..
cant stand it when people say heighth... height...not heighth... Great vid tho thank you!
LOL I think you should stop and think about what you are measuring when you did the 9.5" compressed measurement.
Hi Wadesta11,
Can you give our tech line a call? 1-330-630-0240. We would be happy to help!
lengTH. widTH. heighT.
OMG!!! It’s HEIGHT, NOT heighth
heighth
noun
ˈhī(t)th
chiefly dialectal variant of HEIGHT
1
a
: the part that rises or extends upward the greatest distance : the highest part : SUMMIT
reached the height of the mountain
b
: the most advanced or extreme point of something : ZENITH
at the height of his powers
during the height of the violence
This doesnt help with a vehicle with leaf springs...
It's height, not heigth! Come-on 😮!!
Height, height, height!!!
Hi, i have got a modified 800 rzr, but the shocks that it has are not long enough or strong enough, so how can i know wich King of shocks does it need?
Daniel Antonio Cruz Verdugo,
Measuring the original shock from the center of its mounting points both extended and compressed is the proper way to measure. If the suspension will be modified and the vehicle raced, then the mounting points on the vehicle will have to be measured at extension and compression. You may have to modify these mounting points as well. This really depends on how far you want to go!!:)
