For those wondering why he sounds so much better here, it's not his fault. Tom Hooper specifically wanted Javert to sound rough and cold in his singing voice, so this softer, sweeter singing voice got cut. I actually love both versions (Though I love this one more) just thought I'd give an explanation for why we didn't get the best we could have gotten. Anyways, Crowe is a phenomenal actor and singer and one of my favorites.
The more and more I hear Stars by Crowe, the more and more I love his performance. I feel that the other Javerts are commanding the stars, while Crowe depiction of the Javert is one who is humbled by God and the heavenly creation. This song gives him the conviction to keep on pursuing.
Wtf... This is actually amazing! Yeah, its not an opera voice, but holy hell this was good for an actor without professional musical singing training. I know people are hard on him since he doesn't match up to Phillip or any of the other Javerts on Broadway but if you just sit back and try to enjoy it without comparing him to the broadway performers, its actually a really good performance!
His rendition of Stars on the soundtrack and compelling portrayal of Javert had me looking for more Crowe music. I could listen to his warm, subtly nuanced voice all day long. This gem is just as good. I think his singing gets better and better. I hope he finds more material worthy of it. Sorry, haters, but this man's talent is like the extra credit question on a test. Not everyone gets it.
I must say I completely agree with you. What most people seem to hate is that Crowe gave his Javert a new personality. All the other Javerts seem to be commanding, domineering and imposing all the time. Crowe's Javert is like that EXCEPT for when he sings his two solo songs. He has a tenderness to his voice that says he is humbled by the stars. The other Javerts seem to want to command the stars just as they command prisoners, while Crowe seems humbled by them just as he his humbled by God.
Crowe wasn't my favorite singing version of Javert, but he was the best acted version by far and with no comparison. I understood things about Javert I'd never gotten before. Especially when you see him in the barricade. He's not fighting hardened criminals this time, it's young boys, and you see him realizing that. It's just amazing. So subtle and perfect. I'm glad he was casted.
It's Crowe's own personal recording, posted by him. It was done April 2012 in the evening after he had spent the day filming "Stars" on set, with his vocal coach Roberta Duchak playing piano.
I absolutely loved Russell Crowe's rendition of Javert in the movie!!! I felt he brought out the character perfectly, highlighting his servitude and loyalty to the law, but at the same time showing the audience that he does have a heart and he is not 'evil'. It's nice to hear a polished version of 'Stars', it does justice to RC's singing, but in the movie, the scenes prove what a good actor RC is! Well done!
Loved the movie, wish they would release the 4 hour original cut. Russell Crowe was excellent, his voice was very interesting this isn't an opera it's a movie and he also did a terrific job acting. I've seen other Javert's but no one gave the role depth he gave it. I was neither a Crowe fan or hater before this but after seeing the film (many times now) he's one of my favorites. Because of the power of this movie in the eyes of most people he will always be Javert.
This version is so so so lovely. There's something so comforting and genuine in his tones. So many people are criticizing Russell Crowe's performance, but I think this comes from a limited understanding of what beauty can be. Beauty can include pain and real emotion and quavering moments in life and his songs expressed this rather than going for standard performance.
They made the perfect choice for the way the movie interpreted the work - rather than attempting to mirror Broadway-style singing, they allowed the actor's voices to truly bring out the emotions of each scene. Say what you will in regards to their singing skills, each actor delivered over-the-top performances with the depth that they brought to each piece. Like everyone else, I was so surprised with the choice of Russell Crowe for this role - but his intensity and skill made it work, so well.
Definitely the best Javert I have ever seen, on stage or in this case, on the big screen. Yes, his voice is not the same as what you would see on Broadway or West End, but his level of intimidation, with both his body language, intensity, and stare down tactics are bold, and truly a sight to behold. Love Crowe's performance. Tom Hooper got it right when he said his imagination told him that the only one who could go up against Wolverine was Gladiator!
People can say what they want .. Russel Crows performances in 'Les Miserables' touched me the most. And I think the biggest reason he touched me soooo deep is, that he didn't sing in a perfect .. but in a honest way. I don't think that songs always need perfect singers .. they need truth, honesty and sometimes also simplicity. I just love Russel Crowe as a singer and also as an actor of course.I first saw him in L.A. Confidential and thought: He is special. He becomes a great star!!! And he is!!
Screw those who said he can't sing (he's the frontman of a damn good band, folks!), Rusty portrayed Javert in a unique way with vocal performances that matched the character perfectly. The studio version of Stars wouldn't fit the movie IMO, but it's definitely one of my fave tracks -EVER!
Agreed. If the movie had been done like this, with the singing done separately from the acting, it would have lost so much emotional impact. This would definitely not work for the movie. It's just the words being sung and it's far too manufactured.
I find it silly to compare professional Broadway singers and actors who've embarked on a sung-through movie. I freaking love Quast yet I'd never say: "Crowe can't do it, wish they had cast a true singer". Russel did an excellent job despite not having a trained voice. Chapeau
Exactly its comparing apples and pears... its a movie where you need to focus a lot more on acting than theatrical musical, where you focus more on singing
Russell crowe is the man! i have gone and watched this film 3 times now!! All performers did the show justice! No dissapointmnt, no negativity, no injustice!! The film lives up to the reputation!! Well done to all!!!
Before I saw this movie, I never liked or payed any attention to this song. After I heard Russell Crowe sing It, it now ranks among my favorite performances. I can't stop listening to it.
This is pure beauty!!! I have been a Les Mis fan since I was a teenager (20 years ago) and I have always loved "Stars", I'm always comparing different singers and recordings and I can say that this is one of the most genuine renditions of it, you don't imagine a singer playing the part, you hear Javert...
Loving all the Russell love I'm seeing in most of these comments! He did a grand job as Javert - a role I have wanted to see him play ever since I found out he can sing.
this is simply beautiful. I really think he did a great job in Les Miserables, I'd like to see all of the people who complained about his performance take his place. Show tunes are NOT easy to sing especially when your singing live! He did a great job for what it's worth and I love and respect him for it! Thank you Russell!!
I just love the way Russell sang in this film; the critics were so quick to condemn him but the natural raw way he sang it was perfect for the film and the story. seen this film twice and this and eponines 'on my own' are the two songs that really got the hackles up on the back of my neck. Well done Russell more please..................
Listening again...overwhelming! Just for fine moments like this, life's worth living. Is like Mr Crowe gives his heart to the audience, to the God, to all beautiful things in the world...And not everyone has the courage and generosity to do this...Thank you, Mr Crowe.
As I have said in a previous comment. It is important that the actor or actress puts across what kind of person their character is before putting emotion into their songs. Crowe did put across what Jervert was like as a person and he did so consistently well. Some singers don't have any vibrato at all, and in my opinion its not really necessary to have a vibrato to make the song sound nice. I think that in all, Crowe did a great job!
I think Crowe brought a new dimension to the character Javert. A softer person whose motives we can understand clearly. This song gave me chills in the movie. In my opinion, he plays the best Javert out of any of the former players/actors. Before you ask, yes I have seen every other Les Miserable out there. I stand by what I say.
I consider myself a "hard guy" who only gets kicks from watching action movies like Matrix, 300, Avengers, etc. Then one lonely night, I decided to give Les Mis a go. My life LITERALLY CHANGED since then!!! I CRIED about 60% of the time while watching. I did not understand the reaction. It seems my brain could simply Not Comprehend and Process the Sheer BEAUTY and ARTFULNESS it was being fed. In my 25 years on this earth, LES MIS is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL experience I have EVER had!
every time I listen to this, I get chills! I love his voice and I thought he did AMAZING in Les Mis, not to mention all the other movies he's starred in! After watching A Beautiful Mind in health class last year, Russell became my favorite actor, and he still is. Congratulations, Russell on everything you have accomplished, and I cant wait to see what you do next with your career!
Well the criticism that his vocals were rough and coarse, I though that was the point of having Russell Crow play the part. The character of Javert was a tough and stern man determined to catch his wanted man, worn by the years and Russell’s voice perfectly conveys that, Brilliant.
I think this song is the perfect example of how this movie captures so the intimate moments of the characters, everything from Valjean's Soliloquy to Cosette's part in In My Life captures them so beautifully it's amazing. The problem I have with the stage version of Javert was that he was singing to much to the audience, but the movie finds him in conversation with God and the stars.

THE AMAZING MR RUSSELL CROWE, SO GIFTED & TALENTED, ALWAYS PREPARING AHEAD, SUCH A HARD-WORKING PROFESSIONAL OF HIS CRAFT, INTUITIVE & VISIONARY, A HEROIC PERFORMER BRAVO MR CROWE 👏👏👏
I have seen numerous stage productions of Les Mis from NYC to London and back again. Russell Crowe is turning out to be my favorite Javert. His portrayal was brilliant. In my opinion it's about much more than the voice. Thanks for posting this. Bravo Mr. Crowe!
This was the most adorable thing I have ever heard!! I had no idea there was an actual studio version! Words can not describe how cute this rendition was!
exactly. nobody is really a bad guy. javert lives his life defending the law. and to admit valjean, a fugitive, is a good guy means to go against decades of one belief. Russell crowe was amazing and he made javert my favorite character in the story
I loved this movie. I have seen the stage production three times and I had serious doubts as to whether or not they could pull it off. They did and they did it very well. I loved Russell Crowe. I thought he portrayed Javert as a man who only wanted to do God's will. He and Valjean were both trying to follow God and the path of righteousness. The conflict arose over what that path was. I have already preordered this movie and am currently counting down the days until it is in my home.
Yep totally agree, he brought Javert to life for me,rea lly understood the caractor for 1st time watching the film (and I was no Russell Crowe fan before this!!) and when he pinned the medal on the little boys coat!! RESPECT Russell, never thought that I would ever be writing that in print!! (pardon the spelling by the way!)
Javert is a man who likes order and is convinced he's on the side of the angels right until the end, and RC has completely captured that for me. I'm getting v. annoyed by muso's claiming he has a weak voice or is off-key. His role here is not to blast anyone out of the back of the theatre, it's to sing a prayer, with the camera showing every nuance of his certainty. That's what you get. Just lovely.
This is just... beautiful. If you claim you love music, i think you should be able to appreciate any kind of genres/instruments, and in this case, vocals. Russell might not be the best singer out there, but what's integral in the movie version of this song is how well the actor emotes. Without shadow of a doubt, Russell pulled it off big time. My utmost respect to you Mr.Crowe. This movie just proves how good of an actor you are I wish you the best for your career :)
This is BEAUTIFUL. Russell did a brilliant job of portraying Javert, and putting his own stamp on it. This should be included in any full soundtrack that gets released, please!
Russell Crowe is one of my all time favourite actors , I love him since " The quick and the dead " BUT madly in love with him in " Gladiator " :) I watched it in the cinema 3 times back then. His performanced was incredible and epic !! And also I was so glad that he took the role as Jor-El in Man of steel with my sweetheart HENRY CAVILL 55555. He is so perfect as superman and I can't wait for sequel. Henry is so HOT especially in Tudors LOL
I'll never forget my reaction to hearing Russell sing this for the first time. I was so blown away. I absolutely love Russell's voice, especially his lower range.
I couldn't agree with you more (even though I've always loved the stage show). The film is so much more realistic, raw, and emotionally moving. And Crowe portrayed Javert's role perfectly, in my opinion; I felt like I was seeing Javert as he was intended to be, and it made me view the story in a whole different light.
unbelievable profound voice...and unbelievable the soul put in singing...i don't give a s*** on critics' opinions, i do believe in what i am listening and seeing and in what i like. and i like this. a lot.
I agree. He brought a very reserved Javert to the table. A Javert dealing with a lot of inner turmoil, which is how it should be. You could see it in Russell's eyes. His voice blended well with the music, and I just loved it.
Also, Crowe's voice lends some depth to Javert's character, which really did have depth to it. I thought other portrayals of his character were rather shallow.
His performance as Javert was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. I'd never really cared for the broadway versions of Javert (and I've watched 3), but I was completely emphatizing with Crowe's Javert throughout. Well done!
It bothers me so much that people have stooped so low to not only criticize his singing, but also now his acting. Calling Russell Crowe a bad actor is absolutely false and ridiculous. He is one of the most powerful actors working today and no matter how good or bad a movie is, you know he always has a commanding presence on screen. He will forever be my favorite actor. I just hope all this undeserved hate towards him stops.
I quite like that in him to be honest. In this song, it's showing a tiny seed of doubt; he doesn't think he can catch Valjean without God's help. The softness really brought the character out to me.
Dont try to argue with ppl that just assume that if someone is singing their 'loved part' not in the way they first heard it then for sure that person is singing it wrong. Tbh I love musicals, but hate too much opera singing - most opera singing is just tought, its, how its best to say, learned... but also the voice in most cases dont have wings... its like in a cage of learning how to sing 'corectly'. I luv how Crowe sang this part... bc his voice aint closed in cage - its flyin freely.
Well he sounds better here he still doesn’t sound good
@@mrcrabskachow3373 He may not be good as Philip but he is quite good
It's exactly the same vocals as in the film. This is just the piano that was playing in his earpiece when he was singing live on set.
@@adamo1528 not really. Here his notes sound cleaner and he holds on to them longer.
The more and more I hear Stars by Crowe, the more and more I love his performance. I feel that the other Javerts are commanding the stars, while Crowe depiction of the Javert is one who is humbled by God and the heavenly creation. This song gives him the conviction to keep on pursuing.

As out of sight as this might sound, I do believe this song, in this simple recording, is my all time favorite song.

The studio version of Stars wouldn't fit the movie IMO, but it's definitely one of my fave tracks -EVER!

One of the most amazing movies i've ever seen/heard. Everyone did an amazing job
AbztraK I absolutely agree!
Doctor1Who0 - Games and Music 77
I find it silly to compare professional Broadway singers and actors who've embarked on a sung-through movie. I freaking love Quast yet I'd never say: "Crowe can't do it, wish they had cast a true singer". Russel did an excellent job despite not having a trained voice. Chapeau

You can't hire an actor to play in a musical and then give them a pass when their singing isn't up to par.
Russell Crowe was a perfect Javert!!! Loved it and was amazingly surprised!!!

Bravo Mr. Crowe!
Favorite broadway song of all time
This was the most adorable thing I have ever heard!! I had no idea there was an actual studio version! Words can not describe how cute this rendition was!
I know a lot of critics have bashed Russell Crowe in this role but I quite liked him and didn't mind his singing one bit.
I love this song!!!!!! and the pictures!!!! And his voice!!!! And the piano!!!!!! EVERYTHING!!!!!
This and One Day More are my favorite songs
He sings with passion... I love him -3
Love, love, love. What a beautiful voice and a beautiful song.

I love this song and love Russell crowe voice.
I just love this song sung by Russell Crowe. I play it at least three times daily.
Yep totally agree, he brought Javert to life for me,rea
lly understood the caractor for 1st time watching the film (and I was no Russell Crowe fan before this!!) and when he pinned the medal on the little boys coat!!
RESPECT Russell, never thought that I would ever be writing that in print!! (pardon the spelling by the way!)
Just so beautiful, he blew all my expectations, a truly wonderful Javert
Javert is a man who likes order and is convinced he's on the side of the angels right until the end, and RC has completely captured that for me. I'm getting v. annoyed by muso's claiming he has a weak voice or is off-key. His role here is not to blast anyone out of the back of the theatre, it's to sing a prayer, with the camera showing every nuance of his certainty. That's what you get. Just lovely.
Fantastic work! There's something about the simplicity of him and the piano vs the whole orchestra in the movie, love this
This is just...
Russell Crowe's version is the only one that can make me cry.
LOVE...LOVE...LOVE THIS!!! Russell you are amazing!!
ive been listening to this song since yesterday.....love his voice, love his version...
Russell Crowe is one of my all time favourite actors , I love him since " The quick and the dead " BUT madly in love with him in " Gladiator " :) I watched it in the cinema 3 times back then. His performanced was incredible and epic !!

ive fallen in love with him even farther because of his voice OMG!!!
He has the most beautiful voice ive years in a long time and he nailed this song perfectly
Perfect with simple piano accompaniment. Just lovely...
LUSH! Emotions in the voice and dying to see this. If this is 'sweetened', I think I'll faint with it being 'raw'.
i absolutely love his voice. Crying everytime i hear this song...
I have no idea why everyone hates his singing. It's not half bad.

Russell you sound absolutely beautiful. I love this version so much.
I love Russell Crowe and thought he sang this amazingly well!
I agree. He brought a very reserved Javert to the table. A Javert dealing with a lot of inner turmoil, which is how it should be. You could see it in Russell's eyes. His voice blended well with the music, and I just loved it.
It makes me when people say he can't sing. His voice is different that's what makes this so great
Also, Crowe's voice lends some depth to Javert's character, which really did have depth to it. I thought other portrayals of his character were rather shallow.
I’m not much for action films so didn’t know Russell Crow much but I LOVED him in Les Mis. And I love his voice!
Juste splendide .Le piano et votre voix suffisent.Merci pour cette mise en ligne. Les larmes coulent toutes seules et je me sens stupide.
WooooW really amazing the vocals love it thank you russell for sharing this with us it made my day
Oh my. This is so beautiful! EXTRAORDINARY VOICE.!
Russell, you have serious talent,mate.
Brilliant job!
I can't stop hearing.... on repeat since this morning
Saw & Heard this in the theatre, LOVE IT ------- It's Great.. Thank you for sharing ....
The best version of this song ever Russell Crowe is the best!!
OMG RUSSELL CROWE CAN SING!!! Beautiful!!
I love Russell Crowe as Javert. Amazing.
WHY WAS THIS VERSION NOT IN THE MOVIE!?
ah, this man... he never fails to amaze me. ♥
haters will always hate. this is rich, warm and fantastic. i didn't expect RC to sing this good. bravo
Wonderful piece with the stills. Thank you for posting.
The beginning of this sounds a lot like Burn from Hamilton. Also Russell Crowe did an amazing job singing this song. Lots of love.
Russell Crow is such an amazing actor and that's a FACT!
I quite like that in him to be honest. In this song, it's showing a tiny seed of doubt; he doesn't think he can catch Valjean without God's help. The softness really brought the character out to me.
Thank you for this version... love it! very sweet and true to character...
Actor Russell Crowe, the voice is so so good.stars are listening every day.See Russell Crowe in Les Miserables also already watched five times. ♥
