    The FN FNC was the 'boutique' choice. A detective carrying a custom short-barrelled 1911 and a Bvlgari watch wouldn't carry just any rifle, it would have to fit his persona. "Unique" for some translates into good, for others bad.
    Side note: The AK5C is still the service rifle of the Swedish armed forces and it is largely a rugged FNC.

      One of my favorite scenes, and not just because, many years after first watching Heat, I stumbled across an M3 at a local gun store and caused my bank to suffer mild withdrawal pains when I (inevitably) failed the willpower check to just walk away. Still have it, love it dearly, even though it's a complete PITA to modify. Nobody makes accessories for it.
      But...another neat detail in that scene is that Cherrito's shotgun is punching six-hole patterns into the truck. That tells me he's not using 00 buckshot, but the larger 000 shot, which is usually loaded six to a shell. Not common, because it's not really needed...unless you're shooting through barriers, like doors or bodywork. Excellent choice for that application!

    It could be argued that the reason 'The Crew' tends to use a mishmash of rifles is they have to get theirs _from the black market_ and can't just place a bulk order.

    • @maelqueromain8010
      @maelqueromain8010 3 года назад +21

      One also could argue that a bulk order (legal or illegal) would be less low profile

    • @Brigand17
      @Brigand17 3 месяца назад +1

      Im no expert, but I think black market sellers typically dont have a mishmash of weapons. Like if the source that they got the weapons from is originally a corrupt yugoslavian armourer then they wont get a big variety. They would problaby get a bunch of M72 Yugo's. As an example.

    • @DonPatrono
      @DonPatrono Месяц назад

      @@Brigand17 guess it depends on the black market seller.
      Those you're talking about tend to have direct contacts with manufacturers or armories with little moral quandries, work with large bulk orders, and thus deal mostly with "rogue states", paramilitary groups and entities that can afford their services. To paraphrase Frederick Forsyth in "Dogs of War", they're the kind of people that for less than a thousand rifles and a few million cartridges, wouldn't even get up from bed.
      Given that Pacino's Crew was made of very few people (five to six at most, including drivers) and leaned towards "burner guns" (AKA used once and then disposed so that it would be harder to trace them) they probably worked with lower level sellers, with a mishmash of whatever they had at hand through small time bribery, theft and such
      How do I suppose it's burner guns? Mostly because you don't really see the same guns reused in the movie....in the first heist (armored transport) you see an FAL, two Model 653 14,5" carbines and a Norinco Type 56, during the botched exchange a G3 and a Benelli M4, and in the second heist (bank) you see two M733 11,5" carbines and a Galil. Damn, even McCauley's pistol changes throughout the movie, going from the USP at the beginning to the Sig P220 later in the movie

    I think the FNC kind of makes sense from a filmmaking perspective. My guess is that Mann wanted something with a distinctive silhouette that'd not only fit with Pacino's character but also make him easier to identify in wide shots and action scenes where there are a lot of guys running around in dark suits, and the FNC's shape sort of fits the police role, unlike other guns of the time that had more of a "military look" or would have struck audiences of the time as "bad guy guns." (Anything AK-derived or with a similar silhouette.) The folding stock is also an asset for action scenes. There are a lot more options nowadays, and I'd think the same character in a modern remake might use a SCAR or G36, but back in 1995 I can't think of a lot of options that weren't already used by other characters and also weren't iconic from other movies. (Like the AUG in Die Hard.)

    • @Treblaine
      @Treblaine 11 месяцев назад +5

      AUG is still "the Die Hard gun" to so many people. More than the Beretta 92 or MP5.

    • @Maddog-xc2zv
      @Maddog-xc2zv 7 месяцев назад

      The FNC was replaced in the Belgium army, home of gun design and production, since the 70's till being replaced with the also indigenous FN SCAR. A very tech army still rocking a variant of the FNC, the Ak-5, is Sweden; to the present day. HK is very badly represented in this movie with a civilian "DMR" unscoped when the G3 SG/1 sharpshooter/sniper rifle was introduced in 1972 (called clamped scopes); Pitty it's not on the movie - or at least some clone of it instead of a iron sights variant only; such a crew surely could get hands at least on one of this G3 specialized variants - not even going so far as asking for a PSG1 or the militarized version MSG90.

I remember being a young Sergeant in Iraq reading in “Stars & Stripes” how in the Army performance test of 2005 that same type of M4 I carried performed at the bottom of the list with most stoppages compared to newer stuff out there. As for the FNC, I think it would be cool if Brownell’s did an FNC for their retro line.

    • @tfbtv
      @tfbtv  3 года назад +9

      These comments show 1) a misunderstanding of my comments and 2) a misunderstanding of how the roller-delay blowback system works. First, yes, the HK91 doesn't have adjustable gas because it uses a roller delay system. It's like my saying "this car doesn't use spark plugs." Whatever the reason - because it's diesel or electric, whatever - doesn't change the fact that it doesn't use spark plus, so I don't know why this is an "A-HA!" comment. Number 2, some of you seem to think that roller delayed blowback is some sort of self-adjusting gas system. This could not be more untrue, which is why HK manufactures different angle locking pieces. I was going to type an explanation but I found a good one from a random-ass webpage when I Googled it for something to copy-paste instead: "The advantages of roller delayed actions are significant. First, the lighter bolt assembly and reduced bolt velocity mean that felt recoil and muzzle rise are almost non-existent, particularly in pistol calibers and compared to straight blowback. Generally, roller delayed firearms suppress far better than direct blowback as well. [...] *Moving up to centerfire rifle calibers complicates the roller delayed story.* It’s also where the design’s advantages begin to diminish. *Against popular piston and direct impingement systems, delayed blowback is saddled with some serious disadvantages. Remember, blowback guns rely on chamber pressure to operate. There is no gas system to tune. This means that variations in ammunition pressure, barrel length, or adding a suppressor significantly affect cyclic rate on a roller gun.* Sure enough, these also present challenges for competing designs, but their gas systems either self-regulate (to a degree) or can be tuned to match the situation. The best a roller delayed system can do is swap for a different locking piece to extend lockup time. That’s because the angle of the locking piece’s engagement surfaces determines how much force is needed to move the part. Thus, a more acute angle extends lockup while an obtuse one allows the breech to open sooner. Swapping locking pieces requires at least partial bolt disassembly and is not exactly something that’s ideally done in the field." - www.internationalsportsman.com/how-roller-delayed-firearms-work-and-why-it-matters/

      If you can call the bank heist a climax, there’s another hour of movie left of just wind down

    I'd love to see James rate the weapons in Sicario Day of the Soldado.

    Best part about heat, the guns actually eject the shells. I've seen alot of movies and shows like twd, that the guns just shoot without the action cycling or the shells being ejected.

      Yep. No blanks, pure CG. Looks like shit up close and the actors don’t even pretend to be managing recoil.
      I enjoyed TWD but it was a little painful watching those parts as a gun guy haha.

      @@ryand.3858 IKR! Seeing a dust cover close on a AR, is just painful to watch. But regardless I love the show.

      I mean, when they made this film CGI was still an embryo and stupidly expensive (remember, Jurassic Park came just 2 years before this move and was probably the first movie to have really good CG which inflated the budget more than the animatronics)...it wouldn't be far-fetched to say that at the time having the guns shoot blanks would have been less expensive than having them not shoot at all and then add gunfire and muzzle flashes in post

    Strangely enough that's what people say about James after they find out he has children.

    Heat is a great movie all around , when it first came out it was for sure a sleeper I remember it didn’t do well at all even with pachino and Deniro people just weren’t into it. It didn’t really blow up until it came to home video that’s when it found it’s legs. It’s now a big gun movie and cult classic loved this movie and the Colt Commando / M4 that is my favored assault rifle. Thanks for the the content brother this is excellent.

      There is no such thing as an "assault rifle". AR stands for Armalite Rifle after the company which designed the AR platform. The "assault rifle" term was created by anti-gun organizations and spread by their media and politician allies to scare the public at large.

    Everytime I watch a TFBTV video I end up spending money. I have a green 1301, a bandicoot fanny, and a bunch of 511 clothes. Now I need a mp5 and a FAL. My names also Preston funny enough.
