No you are not an idiot. Other reviewers of their concerts say the same thing. They feel that Nightwish is better in live performances than on CD's. A lot of people think that the music was meant to be seen and heard live.That does not mean that their recordings are not great, because we know that by the amount of people that have never seen them and how they love them also. Song of Myself would be great for next one.
Same goes for Blind Guardian in my opinion. They are so much better live than from CD. Dunno why, but it is what it is. But the best band I've seen live until now is Schandmaul. They sound EXACTLY the same as on studio versions while on stage. And that's a feat I simply haven't seen with any other band. And no, they don't use playbacks ;)
Great song choice from End of an Era. This is one of Tarja's best! If you want to see more from this show I highly recommend "The Siren" and an absolute must-see is "Ever Dream" (both from End of An Era). If you want a slow quiet song, give Sleeping Sun a watch also. Looking forward to so many more of these!!
Adam Blackstone They have already done Ever dream with floor and to be honest the wacken performance tops end on an era, Sleeping sun they should do in my opinion from Tampere 2015 concert. Floor did her own version there and it just tops Tarja by a mile
the man is called "John Two Hawks" I know him personally, he's from the Oglala Lakota Tribe, and part of the same family roots as I am, and the story he tells at the end is actually about the double agents on the trail of tears fighting for the kids which includes my great great uncle.
I highly recommend Tarot as well! Marco is true pioneer of finnish metal. If you want to see him in action with cool gear and as a young spirit you can watch their audition with their song Wings Of Darkness in Hittimittari-show. You can find the performance from RUclips.

I experienced Nightwish first time when I was 10 old and it really shocked me so deeply that it shaped my view of honesty and beautifulness in music so much that I haven't recovered it since. That's why I find it so cute and touching when you are exited about them :). I hope you manage to get yourselves to Tuska to have good time with great bands and see our weird ass little country. You should just react to every song from End Of An Era, even if you have seen some of them on different live version. End Of An Era has The best versions available of every song there (Of course, just my opinion). And this is said in no disrespect to Floor, I love her as well ever since she joined Nightwish (and actually even before that, when she was in After Forever). I know you wanted to look Ever Dream with Floor since that was before the show you went in to, but I was so bummed you missed out on the End Of An Era version. It's pure euphoria. Also, after you listen to Moonsorrow you will have two withdrawal cases with Finnish bands ;)
Mikko Laine Floor is at the very limit of her voice in the chorus, and just about goes over it. And I know she can go higher, but it would require her to change her singing style to the operatic voice. Just like Tarja sings it, and she does it so beautifully. Even better, Marco sings with Tarja through the whole chorus in the end of the song, taking it to a new level. And as we know, their voice go perfectly together. But you are entitled to your opinion and I respect it as a fellow Nightwish fan. Rock on!
Janne Peuraniemi yeah! End of an Era version of Ever Dream was phenomenal. The highs and lows of the song was captured or should I said sang beautifully by Tarja. I felt that version more. Nothing wrong with Floor’s version, she is awesome with her belting out the song and it felt so rock and heavy. But Tarja’s, she made it heartfelt, sense of longing and wanted in that song. She able to bring the emotions much better. That is my 2 cents. \o/
Janne Peuraniemi This performance has the Tarja essence...simply the best....Floor is a good singer and sometimes sounds like a pop singer ..nothing especial...only Tarja can sings the old Nightwish songs...these songs were written for her...the meddle songs were written for Anette ..and the new for Floor..i can't imagine Tarja singing Story time or The endless form most beautiful..that songs don't belong to Tarja. And The old songs don't belong to Anette Or Floor. Remenber the old Nightwish has been the best...so TARJA is the BEST
Man, I envy the music relationship you have with your son. Back when he was 7 or so, my son loved Iron Maiden's "Aces High" followed by Volbeat's "Lola Montez." Then he started before school day care where they played nothing but pop music and nowadays that's all he listens to. I'm hoping he eventually turns it around, but until then, I'll live vicariously through you and your son.
This channel has helped him develop this taste. He always like hard rock but around grade 7 he started listening to hip hop because of his friends so that is why I started the channel. I didn’t want him to start wearing his pants around his knees with 20 inches of underwear showing

I love this song so much. I think it's my favourite from the Century Child album, though it's hard to say, they're all very good. On the End of Innocence DVD someone (possibly their manager, not sure) actually had to check on Tuomas at one point because the album gave him concerns about Tuomas's mental health. Not surprised. This particular song is so full of pain and rage, and the whole album is quite emotional.
If you like what Tarja does with her voice here, you should definitely check her solo career. I'm suggest Ciaran's well, crimson deep and the archive of lost dreams, from her DVD Act 1

Floor is great, but this is where Tarja draws the line where the limit stands on what comes to opera mix with metal. If you know After Forever, you'll know that Floor has limitations that Tarja doesn't have.

Floor did this song at the decades concert. I’d always liked the song, but it wasn’t extra. When I saw her do this song, I cried. It was so hardcore amazing.
Marco does sing on the album version of Ever Dream, but his vocal are buried in the mix to the point that you can't clearly hear him unless you have good headphones
I agree with you Pedro, I feel that some bands simply go through the motions with their audience but others have developed a rapport with their fans and know how to excite the crowd. I found this was the case with Ne Obliviscaris and Arch Enemy recently. Alyssa especially was brilliant with the audience.

Cool song, but my favourite is still dark chest of wonders. What do you guys think of her vocals compared to the current singer? To me this singer lacks of power in higher register while the current one has awesome, accurate and strong voice. My reccomendation: Persefone - mind as universe

I read someone saying that Nightwish sounds better live than on CD... and I can definitely second that, from the four or five times I've seen and heard them live. (with Tarja or Annette) There's just something with the songs themselves that really be made for playing in front of a live audience. But anyway, how about some Doom metal from one of the founders of that genre? Yesterday the swedish band Candlemass released a new song named House of Doom! \m/
I know it is an old video, but.... You have to keep in mind, Marco didn't join the band until 6 years after they had started. Since Annette (and Floor as well to an extent, especially if you go to the very early stuff, you'll notice it even more) can't sing all the most challenging early Nightwish songs. So they have changed some parts to be sang by him, and changed some parts of the songs to be more flattering to Floor's virtuoso way of changing head to chest-voice on the fly (which Tarja couldn't do then). End of an era is pretty much the earliest I recommend going with live performances. They don't do justice to the album versions before that, since they weren't focused in voice/playing quality (as much as today with social media and live recording playing whole different role) as much as just entertaining the audience and having fun, without exerting themselves too much so they can keep on doing hundreds of gigs per tour. Only starting from Imaginarium (2012-2013) tour did they start doing big flashy shows and putting more effort to the showmanship in a whole different level, to make a more complete interwoven spectacle, than individual disconnected songs. As is proven by the Wacken 2013 live performances from that Imaginarium tour, that you have been reacting a lot to. If you are dead set on doing live shows, try to find End of an Era version, or at least privately, listen to the album versions, and be blown away with the difference in quality (particularly in Tarja's pronunciation and vocals, also the guitar player often cuts corners in many of the non-DVD live versions).

That Iced Earth one was purchased at the concert last month. We do buy 90% of our shirts the other 10% the bands send them to us. But we buy at least 1 shirt at every show we attend.

I agree with you Pedro, I feel that some bands simply go through the motions with their audience but others have developed a rapport with their fans and know how to excite the crowd. I found this was the case with Ne Obliviscaris and Arch Enemy recently. Alyssa especially was brilliant with the audience.
I agree, Arch Enemy live is incredible, really great live band. Never seen Ne Obliviscaris but that is changing soon

One of the heavy songs by NW but i think is to underrated like Dead Gardens..From Wacken Live left She is My Sin, Storytime, Bless the Child, Amaranth, Song of Myself, Last Ride of the Day and Last of the Wilds(Instrumental only with Troy).
Basically the ENTIRE WACKEN 2013 shows is amazing!

Cool song, but my favourite is still dark chest of wonders. What do you guys think of her vocals compared to the current singer? To me this singer lacks of power in higher register while the current one has awesome, accurate and strong voice. My reccomendation: Persefone - mind as universe
I used to prefer Tarja over Floor...I am not so sure I agree with that opinion anymore. The more I listen to this band the more I prefer Floor.
This video shows very well Tarja’s problems with chest notes. They are so lifeless and dirty. Classical style she’s moderate. Floor does everything better
Scaretale live with Anette, the so infamous singer of Nightwish which many hate but no matter how much they cry, Anette’s versión was the best.

I read someone saying that Nightwish sounds better live than on CD... and I can definitely second that, from the four or five times I've seen and heard them live. (with Tarja or Annette) There's just something with the songs themselves that really be made for playing in front of a live audience.
But anyway, how about some Doom metal from one of the founders of that genre? Yesterday the swedish band Candlemass released a new song named House of Doom! \m/

I know it is an old video, but.... You have to keep in mind, Marco didn't join the band until 6 years after they had started. Since Annette (and Floor as well to an extent, especially if you go to the very early stuff, you'll notice it even more) can't sing all the most challenging early Nightwish songs. So they have changed some parts to be sang by him, and changed some parts of the songs to be more flattering to Floor's virtuoso way of changing head to chest-voice on the fly (which Tarja couldn't do then).
End of an era is pretty much the earliest I recommend going with live performances. They don't do justice to the album versions before that, since they weren't focused in voice/playing quality (as much as today with social media and live recording playing whole different role) as much as just entertaining the audience and having fun, without exerting themselves too much so they can keep on doing hundreds of gigs per tour.
Only starting from Imaginarium (2012-2013) tour did they start doing big flashy shows and putting more effort to the showmanship in a whole different level, to make a more complete interwoven spectacle, than individual disconnected songs. As is proven by the Wacken 2013 live performances from that Imaginarium tour, that you have been reacting a lot to.
If you are dead set on doing live shows, try to find End of an Era version, or at least privately, listen to the album versions, and be blown away with the difference in quality (particularly in Tarja's pronunciation and vocals, also the guitar player often cuts corners in many of the non-DVD live versions).
Now it's time for The siren, Wishmaster & Bless the child same concert!

BTW... I love Nightwish live shows, but I think you should see SLEEPING SUN video. Amazing video for masterpiece slow song. So maybe as extra bonus one day. But there are two official videos for this song. One with Tarja in bath (not like that :D) and on meadows and stuff... and the other version, newer, with knights and swords and killing :D ... that one is KICKASS!
That Iced Earth one was purchased at the concert last month. We do buy 90% of our shirts the other 10% the bands send them to us. But we buy at least 1 shirt at every show we attend.
