    Hello Abigirl [ @Abigirl_Reacts ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
    Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
    About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
    Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
    " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
    Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
    Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
    There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
    I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

    It is a score, not a song. Composition by Tuomas, the guy on the keys (think Hans Zimmer on metal.) He is also the poet writing the lyrics. Five keys are used, 17 changes of key throughout. Multiple tempo changes. Few vocalists in the world could compete with Floor on that song. The Orchestra you hear is their partner the London Philharmonic orchestra, the Choir is the London Metro Choir, and a couple of Children's choirs are sometime used. Welcome to Finnish Symphonic Metal.

    1. The bull skull is the logo of the Wacken open air festival.
    2. The Orchestral/Choir parts are prerecorded tracks. It is the London Philharmonic & Metro Voices choir.
    Welcome to the Nightwish/Floor Jansen rabbit hole. So a little background. Floor heard Anneke van Giersbergen (The Godmother of female fronted Dutch metal) & the Gathering when she was 16. She quickly decided that was what she should be doing and joined a local metal band that became After Forever. She sang for three years before joining the inaugural class of the Dutch rock academy, then went on to study one year of opera and three of musical theater at the Tilburg conservatorium. She continued singing in After Forever throughout this period. Nightwish was formed in 1996. Floor is the third singer for the band Tarja was the lead singer from 96 to 2005. Tarja is a operatically trained classical voice. Anette was the second lead 2006 to 2012. Anette has a more pop rock voice. Floor has been the lead since 2013.

    Nightwish is a group of extremely talented and hard working musicians who all play for the song. No egos here and the result is a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Loved how you were blown away by Floor. it's a common reaction. And, as you dig more and more into this band's catalog, you will begin to appreciate everyone, and their ability to create emotion. The composer of all their songs is the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen. He has been called the "Metal Mozart" and there's a lot of truth in that. Looking forward to your journey with this great band.

    This song is what I refer to as Nightwish’s version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” complex and mind boggling. The singer is a Dutch artist named Floor Jansen aka the Valkyrie queen. She is a graduate of the Dutch Rock Academy and then 2 years of opera and musical theatre. I recommend “story time”. Wacken is in Germany so it’s pronounced as “Vacken”. The keyboard player is the composer of the music he is called the “Metal Mozart”. There was a burning bull skull because the festival is in a cattle town in Germany and that’s their symbol. Wacken is the gold standard.

    9:31 backing track. Nightwish's backing tracks are recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra or, if they are no available, other very high profile symphony orchestras. That is partly why this type of metal is known as "Symphonic Metal," as any band that has orchestral parts in their music is part of that genre. It sometimes blends over to power metal or epic metal, but orchestra stuff is 98% symphonic metal.

    9:46 the best way to look at Nightwish's "long songs" are to think of them as full songs done in acts. Ghost Love Score has four acts: Opening, first sung part up to the break, first sung part after the break, and then the reprise at the end. Sometimes those parts are named, such as in The Poet and the Pendulum and Greatest Show On Earth (14 minute and 23 minute songs respectively).

    The time signature of the intro (which is resumed near the end in the „aah-aah-aah!“ reprise part) is 2 bars 6/8 and one bar 5/8 followed by another bar 6/8. This is why it seems one beat is missing in the third bar - cause it is! And no, it‘s not one song, it‘s a „score“ - like in film score. But yes, it‘s effectively one piece consisting of several parts. (Comparable to Queen‘s „Bohemian Rhapsody“).

      @@Abigirl_Reacts Yes, it is a "Score," like a movie score with different acts, and a climax, followed by a denouement. The central part was not an intermission but an intermezzo, an orchestral interlude that bridges two parts of the story. This score tells the story of a heartbroken young man, left emotionally dead after he finally realizes, after years of obsessive infatuation, that he has been in love with a figment of his imagination rather than the real woman as she actually was, i.e., not interested in reciprocating any romantic advances that may or may not have been. Metaphorically speaking, he was in love with a "ghost" that evaporated in a puff of smoke once the realization came. During the "My Fall" first verse, you can hear the Metro Voices of London choir in the background singing, "My fall will be for you; my love will be with you. If you be the one to cut me, I will bleed forever!" And then, in the "My Fall Reprise" after the realization tears his heart out, the choir sings, "My fall will be for you; my love will be with you. You WERE the one to cut me, so I will bleed forever!" Notice the subtle change.

    Welcome to the world of symphonic metal. You have found the leader in the genre. Floor's voice has mesmerized so many people, including opera singers. She's definitely a Valkyrie. Follow General Gabriel's list as a great path.
    There are many wonderful bands in this genre. The band I consider my favorite symphonic metal band is Epica. They also use symphonic music and choirs in their music, but with a much darker sound. Their female singer, Simone Simons, is spectacular. The song I recommend to start would be Unleashed, at the Retrospect anniversary concert. They had a full orchestra and choir on the stage with them. I think you will love the sound.
    p.s., Floor was a guest singer at the concert and does two songs with Simone.

His list is just about as perfect as it gets to leading you down the history of NW. There are two milestones that you will reach (The Poet and the Pendulum & The Greatest Show on Earth) and if you are not properly prepared for these milestones, the experience will not hit as hard emotionally. Yes... in this song, Floor is the only one singing. However there are many songs where the Bassist Marko (until he left the band a couple years ago) also sings a little... and a few songs where it's all Marko singing, with maybe Floor doing a little backing. FYI, Marko is also a lead singer in his own band that he created with his brother back in 1982 and was still playing with all through his time with Nightwish... so he can really sing as well. You will eventually see it.
    There is also another member of the band that you did not see here, named Troy, who is a multi-instrumentalist, that does some back-up singing as well.
    The ENTIRE band is extremely talented, both past and present members.
    And by now you've seen Gabriel's list of recommended songs...it's a fantastic list, but if you decide to follow his list please feel free to go off the list from time to time. It's impossible for him to include ALL the good songs because then he would have to list them all... no joke!

      Those are the 3 off the top of my head where Marko is the lead or sole singer. There are MANY others where Floor is lead of course where Marko (and sometimes Troy) does more or less backing vocals...and some of those are fantastic to hear as well because Marko and Floor together ... well they really work well together!

    Hello Abi, welcome in the mesmerizing world in symphonic metal!
    You already seen the most popular band in this genre. Nightwish have many awesome songs, my suggestion is The Poet and the Pendulum official live version.
    This genre have alot fantastic bands but many with a little different style. My favourite is the Epica. Fun fact their lead singer Simone Simons is close friend to Nightwish singer Floor Jansen (they are both dutch). If you want to check them might be one of the best pick is Kingdom of Heaven part3 from Omega live.
    But ofc we have many great bands and songs to hear 😊 just a small list:
    Xandria - Valentine
    Lacuna Coil - Swamped live from 119
    Therion - Siren of the woods
    Within Temptation feat Anneke van Giersbergen. - Somewhere
    Beyond the Black - Night will fade
    Blackbriar - Weakness and Lust
    Evanescence - My immortal
    And finally i recommend tons of Ayreon live songs coz many of the best female and male metal singers (ofc with Floor and her sister Irene too!) worked on Ayreon's rock operas/shows.
    Enjoy your journey! 😉

    • @warbear323
      @warbear323 2 месяца назад +2

      You noticed something that I don't recall anyone noticing before, or at least they didn't mention it in their reaction. It is that Floor changed the lyrics very slightly from the original song. The video you watched had one of the changes made in the sub-titles ("singing" on the shoulder -> "sitting" on the shoulder), but it missed the other one and you caught it (brings me to "thee" -> brings me to "tears").

    • @warbear323
      @warbear323 2 месяца назад +2

      The many, many key changes are also something that most reactors don't mention. A reactor once went through and counted them. IIRC there are more than a dozen. You mentioned that this felt like multiple songs. It is, sort of. The word "Score" in the title is an apt description, as it is a composition with many parts, but all supporting a common idea.

    • @warbear323
      @warbear323 2 месяца назад +2

      Your reaction to Floor's voice is fairly common (Floorgasm), but the speed at which your first one came was not. There is something about Floor's voice that just resonates with most people. Perhaps the timbre? I don't know. That soul-grabbing voice is one of the reasons she has been nicknamed the Valkyrie Queen or Valkyrie Goddess. Another reason is her stage presence. She commands the stage, just by being on it. Her stature doesn't hurt. She is 6'1" and she is wearing 4" heels at this concert. You can't help but be mesmerized. Her vocal range (both pitch and style), her breath support, her pitch control, etc., are almost bonuses. Another reactor analyzed the audio from this live performance looking for any signs of pitch correcting and found none. Floor doesn't need any. She is that good.

    • @warbear323
      @warbear323 2 месяца назад +1

      She is also physically beautiful. This is enhanced on-stage with quite a bit of makeup, but she is also beautiful with little or none and is completely comfortable and willing to show her unadorned face to the public. She is one of the most humble and kind people you would ever meet. She tries hard to keep herself grounded and maintain balance in her life.

    • @warbear323
      @warbear323 2 месяца назад +1

      She is a "highly sensitive" person. Some call the condition being an "empath". This helps her connect with the songs she sings, her bandmates (she calls them her "brothers"), and with the audience. But, being highly sensitive comes at a cost. It can lead to exhaustion, or worse. Right before joining Nightwish, Floor was recovering from a severe "burnout". Fortunately she was recovered enough to join them on tour with only 48 hours notice. There is a documentary on RUclips surrounding this called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours".

Most of the crowd hadn't really heard her before, they were used to her predecessor. We were over half way back so it was tough to see sometimes, but Floor just towered over the other band members. Gabriel would've probably given you a great list which most reactors stick to - but I think it would be fun to dabble in some up to date offerings first. the single greatest rabbit hole you can explore in your life in Nightwish. Each song is an adventure and no two are alike. Tuomas, the keyboard player, is the greatest composer in my lifetime, and I'm far from being the only one who feels that way. There will be a day when you remember this first introduction to the band with great fondness, because that was the day you discovered Nightwish. Greatest musical journey I've ever experienced. New sub!

    Great reaction! Northern New England Division reporting in. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal, the glorious mash up of symphonic composition, orchestral instruments and heavy metal. This performance is from 2012 at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany. Pronounced Vah-ken (German w) it is one of the biggest heavy metal festivals in the world. Wacken is normally a sleepy cattle town in northern Germany (pop about 2000) but every summer it swells to 80,000 to 100,00 metal heads for the festival. The flaming bulls head is the symbol of the festival. Nightwish was the headliner in front of 82,000 people. The lead singer here is Floor Jansen, our 6' 1" Dutch Valkyrie. She is the third and current singer for the band and IMO one of the most powerful and versatile singers on the planet. She is a Highly Sensitive Person so she feels emotions more strongly then most and this allows her to imbue her singing with tons of emotion. Most of Nightwish's music and lyrics are composed by their keyboardist and founder, Tuomas Holopainen, our Metal Mozart. Again IMO he is a musical genius and writes incredible melodies and poetic lyrics designed to invoke emotions in you. Nightwish's music tends to be complex with ever changing time signatures and key changes. Checkout this reaction by an Australian composer where he breaks down why we get those goosebump inducing Floorgasms. ruclips.net/video/-ql4Y12xbck/видео.htmlsi=bWKqFIP4vMM_9as2. Tuomas uses 16 key changes and 5 different keys over the course of the song and then uses the most powerful resolution of the chords (5,7 to 1) at the end of the song to give you that amazing feeling of satisfaction and resolution.
    Floor and Tuomas are the perfect duo to make you feel, even when you weren't in that place to begin with. Next song I would recommend Your's is an Empty Hope to get another side of Floor's voice. Listen carefully in the chorus to see who is singing the main melody and the death metal gutterals under the melody. If you want something more recent then checkout the ballad Laternlight (have tissues handy) or the banger Ocean of Strange Islands from their new album that dropped on 9/20. General Gabriel will be along shortly and will share some of their history with you along with a link to his YT page where on his commentary tab he has a series of posts with links to the best quality videos of a vast number of songs along with a short description. It is not a prescriptive list of a specific order but a resource for you to use on your journey. If you have questions ask and the Army will be there to guide you. Looking forward to sharing your journey of discovery.

    Since you have a young one, Floor has a magnificent cover of "Let It Go" from Frozen on her RUclips channel. She did it for her first daughter a few years ago. Will make you crave more metal Disney songs.

    The entire band leaves the stage during the "blue" interlude. And the symphony & choir are background tracks from the album.
