    I never realized how ingrained you and Athena are into my Sunday routine. It was so weird drinking my coffee without a fresh dose of spiffiness last week. Glad you're back and feeling better! Also, that shot of Athena in the beginning she looks so shiny and beautiful, really, really great job on the paint.

    Welcome back! Exhaust suggestion is keeping it centred on transom so it's always same height above sea level no matter angle of heel when under way. Best of luck

      I thought about that, but will that get in the way of his wind vane steering? Looking at his device in older videos, it mounts up and down along the center of the transom too (unlike other vanes, that mount with four points spread out in a box like shape).

    Mads, good job. Points to consider - a "sealed" system will be easier to vent, have less tendency to sludge, occupy less space as the expansion vessel will only need to be small (4% of the total volume and the pressure variation should be no more than 0.5bar - 2bar). Inhibitor can then be added and basically forgotten about and you'll have no issues with boat movement, frothing/aeration in the vented expansion tank, plus no evaporation and so on, it's normally a no brainer. A temperature and pressure relief valve is all that is then needed discharging to a safe place (I would suggest bilge). I don't know the heater but if it is modulating keep the circulating water as small as possible for response times. The boat, even with insulation is going to be cold but will heat up very quickly so a modulating burner would normally be an important consideration rather than just running the water at a constant temperature. The circulation pipes looked suitably small bore (10mm?) which is great for small volume and response times. Make sure the pump (integrated?) is accessible for servicing. The accumulator tank is a strange one to me but is obviously part of the manufacturers instructions and requirements - follow them. Fit quality isolation valves everywhere for ease of servicing - full bore and temperature rated, butterfly valves save space. Lag pipework where you don't need heat. Heat loss from pipes can be a pain but it will stop condensation and mould in cold climates. As high up on the transom as you can - the exhaust is not designed to mix with water and flue temps should be low-ish (condensing boiler?). A water trap may be required. We have a standard electric water heater and two Eberspaecher which blow very hot gases which means a lagged exhaust, but there are no complaints with the shower and heating! Good luck!

    Hi Mads. I'm the norwegian guy with a Bavaria 39 that visited you onbord Athena in Skive harbour i 2019. I have had a water based heating system in my boat for some 14 years now and I love it. My system is somewhat different. I use a 5 Kw Eber burner and the engine via a heat exhanger to warm up the "system water", but I also have a calorifyer in the loop. This has also a 230 V heater element and I use this from time to time when shorepower is available. The system water runs in two parallell 19 mm isolated lines (port and starboard) and I have set up 7 of similar fan-heaters as yours. Each heater is set up with valves for adjustment or cut off. A small expansion tank (about a gallon) is placed in the engine room as the highest point. The system contains only 13 liters anti freeze. I have two serial connected pumps in the system. One is controlled by the Eber heater and the other starts when the engin starts as well as with a manual switch. The two cirkulation pumps makes it also easy to get air out of the system. The system has worked fine all this years, but I have had trouble with the Eber (had to change it two times). Using the boat mostly for heating water for shower and dishes, we normally run the Eber for 30 min. Then we have 60 degrees in the calorifyer and plenty for showering. When the sea water is cold, heating the boat is necessary and normally the heater do not start and stop too much.
    But since you plan to use your boat for liveaboard in cold clima, I fully support your choise of a heater with variable effect. But you will also use the engine many hours and using the heat that it produce would be an advantage in my opinion.
    Regarding exhaust: I recommend the place you first pointed to. I don't think the mooring lines will be a problem, but make sure you don't hang fenders there :-)

    • @rogerkerkmann
      @rogerkerkmann 3 года назад

      Can you run an eberspatcher on fresh water and use it for radient heat? Also the dometic runs 15k btu on low, I believe the eberspatcher goes down to 5k btu, thoughts?

    • @thorsteinverby4382
      @thorsteinverby4382 3 года назад

      @@rogerkerkmann Yes, I'm sure you can run it on fresh water, but if you have the boat i Norway - as I do - the freezing temperature is the problem when not in use :-)
      My heater is rated at 5 kW - around 17000 btu I think. It regulates itself down to about half of that - can not be set to run permanent on half speed.

    We had the same set up in our lorry but webasto diesel we found not have any stored hot water was a problem if we wanted to do some washing up we had to fire the heater up which on and off isn’t good for them. We removed the heat exchanger and fitted a calorifier in its place good thing now w3 have hot water for at least 20 hrs after heater is off and if we are on shore power it has an immersion heater in it so we don’t need to run the heater. We also dump excess solar power into it.

  • @vraymond108

    I wish the x30 had been available when I installed my X45 several years ago. Except for one small hiccup that the manufacturer covered it has been working flawless for 8 years. I use it also to heat my domestic hot water for bathing and washing dishes instead of engine heat. So we can turn those nice fan coil units off for summer and still have hot water. I also installed heat sensors on the fan coil units so the only start blowing when the water is up to temp. Good luck with your install, it will be one of the most satisfying installations for your boat. Enjoy being warm.

    We have had two heaters on our boats. First exhaust was right where you started, by the docklines. One melted howser on a cold winter's night in Catalina was a lesson learned. The second, on the boat we have now, is on the transom and right above where the dinghy would tie and where feet could get more than toasty! Will be a good challenge to figure that one out.

    Someone else mentioned return air openings. Proper placement of these can also dry out bilges and wet lockers, as well as helping to provide even heat distribution throughout the boat. Avoid engine rooms, fuel storage areas, etc which might contaminate the interior air.

    The expansion tank should be closer to the centerline. Also I'd put the big tank underneath the cabin sole for lower center of gravity and a bit of floor heating.

  • @asciiavatar
    @asciiavatar 3 года назад

    The 'on demand' water heater is a good choice. Not only will it save electricity by not having to constantly heat water in a storage tank but the storage tank would take up a good amount of space depending on how much water you want.

  • @rhirwin10
    @rhirwin10 3 года назад

    Mads, place the exhaust outlet up high on the side of the hull. I have an Espar diesel heater with the exhaust on the transom. Airflow with the bow into the wind (at anchor) causes a low pressure back circulation of the exhaust which allows some exhaust fumes in the cockpit.

    If you can pull the return pipe from the radiator in the bathroom in a loop benieth the floor boards you will get some really nice floor heating in colder climes. We lived aboard our Bavaria 42 in Göteborg during 4 cold winters and we loved that luxuary. Just put som insulation benieth so you dont warm the ocean instead.Took me like 30 min extra and soo worth it!

    Assuming the 6400 and 6000 numbers indicate thermal power, you should put the saloon and forward cabin on a separate circuit. You want an equal temperature drop in every circuit, that how you maximize efficiency. The hydraulic resistance of every circuit is going to be quite similar, so they are all going to get the same flow, in the diagram you are going to extract twice as much heat from one circuit than the other two. So the exittemp of circuits 2 and 3 will be higher than that of one. Then all is going to cool in the buffer tank, so all that heat is lost. (oh, and please insulate the buffertank).

    If the fans are noisy and you don't like it, you can rubber mount them. There's these T pegs made out of rubber that you can buy online, and the legs are plastic. That plastic has 3M red double sided tape, so you can mount them anywhere you like. Cuts a lot of the noise, which is vibration.
    You also need a hole through which the air to enter, not just exit. Just letting you know.

    To cut down on future heating cost, make some kind of heatexchanger for the exhaust. If it's hot, it means that you have a (big) loss.
    Your boiler looks like it have the same heatexchanger as the airheater type. (like webasto) These heaters have a efficiency of only 50%, meaning that they throw 50% of the heat right thru the exhaust and out side.
