This video from 7 years ago totally saved me from what is most likely more than $300 now (2022). Also I ordered my switch on Amazon for $21 with keys and Security Module. Radio and Switch Cluster was a 7mm to remove on a 2000 Malibu to remove. Hardest part was fumbling around with the screw driver to get the existing lock out but that took 2 minutes after I finally got a flash light. 10 minutes later I was driving. Thank you for this!!!
Omg this video is awesome because I took my car to a mechanic and he said it would cost me $400 and this is so easy that I can do this OMG you are awesome bro thank you so much you just saved me $400
Thank you for this video. I had a problem where I could not turn the key all the way to the off position so the accesories would not shut off and the battery would drain. I bought a new key cylinder and that didn't fix it so I bought a new ignition switch and that didn't fix it either. It turned out to be the Chevrolet Malibu Shift Interlock Solenoid. I replaced that and everything worked again. it was a 2003 car with over 200,000 miles.
I've got a 98 Malibu LS 3.1, 2 weeks ago, something started draining the battery like crazy. I replaced the alternator twice, the solenoid on the starter, and it's on the 3rd battery now. As long as the car is running there is no issues, but off the battery is drained within 8 hours. Where is the EMC located? I have been told like 3 different places, and looking them up online, they don't even look the same as shown in the videos I've seen. Yours is the first one that's been accurate on the Malibu this whole time. Thank you
Alan Marshall Yup, I called the dealer because I got a recall notification on the ignition issue... well all they actually do is glue something on to your key... pretty stupid if you ask me, i figured they would just replace the whole switch but nope lol. Yea atleast on GM stuff it seems to be pretty easy.
The cylinder on my 240sx jams up once in awhile. pretty annoying I must say. good tips, man. looks pretty straight forward to do besides that security warning.
How’s you connect the radio, I need to hook mine up so it turns off and on with car instead off me manually turning it off and on and it still drains battery
Hey ik I’m a year late but you can drill out the tumbler untill it turn or if you don’t mind buying a new switch punch the tumbler threw and then press the pin on the side mind you I’m no mechanic but worked for me
Hello Hank , I changed the audio system ( radio and disc player) of my Malibu 2001, but every time I use it , appears for a moment the word ERROR., Please What is your advice, thank you
I don’t see where I need to stick the screwdriver in the end went thru this whole process and can’t get the thing to pop out does the switch need to be turned already?
Hi, i was just told my total to fix this would be$460 which i dont have. I have changed out a starter before and when i said to the guy "is that the starter " he said no. Then my bill ( for diagnostics) said ignition lock cylendar!!!! Wtf so ill be changing this myself!!!! Thanks so muck for pointing out we have to wait for the anti theft light to go off!!!!! I would have forgotten that and thought i messed up!!!!
Was wondering, was there a cassette deck below the temperature control when the factory stereo was installed? My grandmothers 2000 Malibu still has the original factory AM/FM/CD stereo with an optional cassette deck below. Basically the lights burned out on the factory stereo and it needs to replaced soon, and since the cassette obviously won’t work with an aftermarket stereo, we would need to find a dash pocket to fill in the space where the cassette deck is.
Ignition switch replacement costs over $400 now..I just took my 2000 Malibu in this morning, for a recall notice on the ignition switch, and they modified the key, with no switch replacement. But the car starts fine now. Does anyone know what is done to the key?
@@trentosborn8835 the release pin or the entire lock cylinder would need to be drilled out. it's not fun if you can't turn the key to run and push the release.
i just bought one today and i have an issue where the accessories wont turn all the way off. the radio and lights are still on when i take the key out and open the door
Great job, I need to replace key cylinders for both front doors and trunk on 2000 Chevy Malibu do you happen to have a video on that .I've been looking and found nothing
Im having a similar issue with my 2K Malibu. Sometimes I'll turn the car off, pull the key out and realize it didn't turn completely off (radio lights/sound still on). So, I simply put the key back in and turn until for sure turned off. Also, can turn the car completely on and remove the without car turning off. Would this possibly be the reason why my SVS light comes on and stays on? When it does come on, dimmer switch isn't functional, instruments (speedometer, tachometer, etc.) lighting isn't present - which makes driving at night an issue- as well as AC panel lights not working. Lately, I've been notified that my taillights do not work...my brake lights work when I step on the brake pedal, though, so if I absolutely need to drive at night I have to 'ride the brakes' or else the tailights wouldn't remain illuminated. Headlamps, high beams function alright....can manually be turned on, of course. But when I start the car and shit to reverse, sometimes I notice the headlights blink rapidly about 4-5 times and then the SVS light comes on and remains on. Talk about a headache....
I have a 98 malibu as well. The stock radio that came with the car is broken and I need an upgrade. I was wondering where you found that radio dash kit.
I have a 2001 Malibu with an aftermarket radio. The guy I got it from replaced the lock cylinder a few months before I bought it. The theft system light doesn't go off. Does anyone know what it could be?
Did you have issues with the windows not going down because of the ignition switch too? I just bought an 04 Malibu for a work car and I’m having the same issue you had plus the windows aren’t going down
Thank you for this video I have that problem for years ruined batterys cause of it. Finally yesterday it decided to quit working at the front door of the gas station fuckin embarrassing. Thanks once again God bless
So I dont need to then take my car into a dealership and reprogram it? I have a 01 Malibu n have been having this issue and everyone keeps telling me I have to take it to a dealer
damn u made it look easy, i am having the same problem with my malibue this morning, it killed my battery because I left it on all night, where do you find a good ignition cylinder for decent price?
replace the key, ( dont have the key copied because of wear, go to the dealer and have them cut you a new key off the vin #) tumbler and lock cylinder switch assembly do the relearn, when the light is on the fuel is cut off, I replaced all mine and havent had a problem since, and these lock cylinders are sensitive, remove ALL things off key ring and only have the key by itself. and jamming key in and fast rotation is also bad, I learned to be easy and it works fine. The only things it could be are the key, tumbler-lock cylinder, switch or Computer
the key must turn at least to on if not start position. I just did the replacement today and found that it can be released even when you turn the key a little bit if you cannot do it all the way
Just bought a 2000 Malibu. I was looking up the parts I needed to replace. One is the ignition cylinder. How much did your cost? I ask because the price I am finding seems extremely high.
My CHevy Malibu 2001 did the same thing....BUT I figured out the shifter was NOT exactly aligned in park...did a little wiggle of shifter then the key went 100% vertical (visibly) and key came out !! Prior to this I discovered the condition would drain the battery till it eventually died after repeated trickle chargings.....ha !!
I have the same car and was told to come in for a repair for the ignition lock cylinder because of a gm recall haven't taken it in yet but was just curious as to why they told you that
El Jefe it could be that they just didn’t want to do the work but he adamantly told me it was just a plastic piece on the cylinder. Regardless I don’t have this car anymore tho
What issue do you have? I replaced my as a last thing after changing battery,, starter, fuel pump, spark plug and alternator die to crazy theft system and starting issues
Just so you know, there is a recall on these switches. Phil at the Big O can't change it for you. You HAVE to take it to a Chevrolet dealer to have it repaired. Even better, just set it on fire and push it over a cliff.
Having trouble with key not coming our or not turning off vehicle, and or you replaced the key cylinder and the key doesn't want to come out, it will be because the shifter cable, " Transmission in park safety " that is in the back of the ignition module (the part you put the cylinder in), simply remove the cable " snap in type ".

jackbrady7 I’m having the same issue I can’t find a video on how to replace the shift interlock
can you explain how you did it?
Interlock just use d40 or silicon spray, shift button sticking.
No dealership. Thanks. Going to try this in 15 min.

Thanks for your video I without knowing anything about mechanics watching your video step by step I managed to change this part
Great video! Very well done i just ordered a new ignition cylinder for my sister in laws 2000 Malibu. Glad the process is pretty simple
Where did you order your ignition cylinder
I had to replace the switch in the 02 Chevy truck I had, however I didn't have to relearn it. It's a lot easier than the dealer wants you to think!

If my car key opened my door too would changing my ignition lock cylinder interfere with that or would the new key unlock my doors
Thanks!!The video helped me to fix my issue with switch not going fully to the off position and radio would stay on
How’s you connect the radio, I need to hook mine up so it turns off and on with car instead off me manually turning it off and on and it still drains battery
where you buy that ignition switch. I can start the car i just have to turn it a ton
Should I be worried if I switch the ignition coil but it just starts up without no restart procedure?
I changed the key cylinder and the car still get stuck on accessory is there something else I can do
Hello good day I have a question for you after putting it I have to program it ??? I hope you can answer me 🙏 please
I didn’t have to reprogram anything
Thanks, worked perfectly ten minute method. 😁
Ive done all the passlock stuff and my car still will not start. Any suggestions?
Thank you sir I will be trying this on today
Saw your video and worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this video.
What if you can’t turn your key at all to release the tab?

Thanks so much I love finding videos for uncommon jobs like this. Who needs shopkey when I got youtube?
Great video ! it was easy replacing my Cylinder Lock on my 2003 Chevy Malibu
How much was the lock cylinder? Autozone has them for like $130. Seems like a lot. I have a 2003
My son has a 2003 malibu. I think that's what it needs
Hello Hank , I changed the audio system ( radio and disc player) of my Malibu 2001, but every time I use it , appears for a moment the word ERROR., Please What is your advice, thank you
Can you tell me if these car keys have a chip in them? And what I should do if I lost my key?
I couldn’t get the new one to connect with the three prongs.
I don’t see where I need to stick the screwdriver in the end went thru this whole process and can’t get the thing to pop out does the switch need to be turned already?
thanks dude big help.that was a great detailed video
Weird I just did mine. Solid theft system light. But it's still letting me start the car. But the light won't turn off
I would like to know if it hesitate to start what could I do if that don't work
check battery terminals, then follow the ground wire from the battery to wherever it attaches to the frame, see if its tight and no corrosion.
Very good information that I totally need at the moment thank you so much great video
Will this work for a 2003 model

Yikes $500? That's insane
Where did you get your new switch and how much?
Dude you are a life saver
Glad it helped man !

Where can I get a new ignition cylinder WITH KEYS for my 2005 malibu maxx???
my 03 Malibu key won't even turn from the off position, will I have to tow it in?
Got the old cylinder out and the new one I have that is the right one wont slide in. Yours clicked right in. I don't get it.
Keep in mind the cylinder will not come out without the key turned on
What does one do about this issue? I have an 02 and the key won’t turn to the on position.

+Edwin Minguela Nah I dont, They shouldnt be all that difficult though, google it and see what comes up Im sure someone wrote a how to on it somewhere
So can a bad ignition switch can cause the ac control panel to not light up

Move the shifter back and forth
I have a 98 malibu as well. The stock radio that came with the car is broken and I need an upgrade. I was wondering where you found that radio dash kit.
amazon I think
Can u please help me I can't find the stupid slot idk what I'm doing wrong
This was great info. One question. Do you have to have the key to the original key switch? That is one reason I am changing mine out we lost the key.
No you don’t I don’t think
I have a 2001 Malibu with an aftermarket radio. The guy I got it from replaced the lock cylinder a few months before I bought it. The theft system light doesn't go off. Does anyone know what it could be?
I'm lost I replaced my lock cylinder thought I had to do the relearn process but it started right up!
So that means you have two sets of keys? One for you car doors and one to start car?
yes
I have alarm on my Malibu will it get messed up when I change it?
what alarm do u have. It its security light, leave car in accessary on position n it will fix it acter replacing lock
Great video man! I hope I never have to do that though.
Ya worst part was the cost 150 bucks. Woulda loved to get one from the scrappers but you rarely find keys with them
@@hanksgarage_what slot did you put the screw driver in?
There's a recall on Chevy Malibu 1998-2004 for faulty ignition switches. Isn't this the same thing the Dealership will do for Free under the recall?

So I dont need to then take my car into a dealership and reprogram it? I have a 01 Malibu n have been having this issue and everyone keeps telling me I have to take it to a dealer
I got mine replaced in my 2005 Malibu classic started up after 10 minute relearn. No dealership required.
Can't believe its that easy to get to that ignition switch, on my 97 neon is really hard to get to.
Sean Slater Thats actually really surprising, figured it would be just as easy on one of those
www.justanswer.com/dodge/3w1df-1997-dodge-neon-remove-ignition-cyli.html
You need the key in and do some voodoo magic with you hands to get this out.
Sean Slater that is hilarious but shitty if you ever have to do it.
Great job THANK YOU THANK U MY BOYFRIEND IS A IDIOT!
Nice one Hank! Do you have too many keys on the key ring causing the trouble in the first place? Thanks.
Yes that's is what will cause it and these kinds of cars have this problem on general
damn u made it look easy, i am having the same problem with my malibue this morning, it killed my battery because I left it on all night, where do you find a good ignition cylinder for decent price?
You can try rockauto, but I ended up getting this one from autozone because I needed it that day
k thanks Hank, keep up the good work!
did you have to get door locks as well? or does the key match

Hey, great vid, where did you get your single din adapter for the new radio? I’ve been looking all over and can’t find it
I think it was walmart
What did you press to release the switch
Denise Simpkins there is a metal button which can be pressed to release key cylinder if you turn the key to on
Where did you get the part from?
Where did you get the Replacement part?
what if you can't turn the key at all

Average cost is about 180, may be lower if you have an account with some place, even lower if you can find a low mileage unit at a salvage yard.
cant get key out
Mine does this i just wiggle my gear shift to turn it off
Agreed with that.
Thanx alot for this vid now to do it
