I love the way how this production is refulfilled, I think the cow being a person, the Little red riding hood and Jack being children's, and other facts are very positives points of this play, i just love it!
Color Purple Lover yeah, I've never understood the hate she gets. I absolutely love her in this role. Her, Bernadette and Donna Murphey are the absolute best imo. Hannah Wattingham was also pretty spectacular.
Vanessa Williams is AMAZING in this! I know everyone has their favorite witch, but Vanessa is mine! The quality of her voice is spectacular and her comic timing is spectacular. She really gets the character. I LOVE it!
I never knew she got so much hate but I think she did AMAZING I feel like when the witch gets Rapunzel I get a feeling that the prince was controlling her to stay with him and not with the witch
I realize what a truly great job Danielle Ferland did in the original production by watching the Little Red in this version. Generally, this production did not rely on the comic timing of the actors to get laughs like the original did. At first I thought it was terrific that they had a moving, seemingly alive Milky White, but it ended up being a gimmick to get laughs-- a gimmick that distracted from the words. And Jack's Mother can't sing a note.
This is my favourite all round cast by far. Laura obviously is fantastic but I also really enjoyed kelly as bakers wife and Vanessa as the witch and rapunzels voice was stunning! Even jack was good, and I enjoyed the staging as well
I was lucky enough to see this production. I confess that I had a hard time letting go of the indelible impression left by the original Broadway cast, which got in the way of being able to enjoy the performances. For instance, I hated Jack’s mother. But watching it now, I think she’s hilarious. Same with Vanessa Williams, who was much more down to earth in this role than the imperious diva that I had hoped for. The special effect of Cinderella’s mother in the tree was spectacular. It loses a lot in this home video recording. Still, it’s great that this is here!
Can we talk about Vanessa Williams' glam reveal at 1:11:46? That was amazing! How I wish the 2022 revival could do that, but instead, the transformation happened offstage, with Patina Miller just walking on stage in her glamorous form.
Rapunzel's prince is my favorite. "You know nothing of madness, until you're climbing her hair...all the while listening to her go ah, ah ah, ah ah..." I'm dead. XD
Thank you for uploading this. I'm a huge Vanessa Williams fan and was dying to see her performance in this. Too bad the sound kicked out close to the ending.
Your Mother i didn’t see that at all. it almost seemed like they added more unnecessary jokes into this one and that’s one of the things i kind of dislike about this one in comparison to the other one. the milky white gag left and right, cinderella’s birds, etc.
Even though this revival has a lot of hit and miss, there are the good moments. The set design was really clever with the storybooks, Laura Benanti did wonderful and Jack's Cow (Chad Kimball) stole the show. The Baker's wife (Kerry O' Malley) held her own too.
@@ggiantsintheskyy5670 no, not for me. The original and movies are better than this dump in my opinion. Meryl and Bernadette holds the best witch title, Kim Crosby and Anna Kendrick are the best Cinderella, I also like the original Jack, The Baker, The Baker's wife and Little Red more while Johnny Depp as the wolf
Thank you for uploading this! Shame about the audio though. I'll treat this as a very good recording of a Broadway cast doing the abbreviated version ;)
She's awful. She can't even keep up with the music. She has no idea how Sondheim music works - and this music is tricky. I'm kind of flabbergasted she gave a Broadway performance, because she's not really up to it. While it's great to see some new faces and new people being given a shot (in 2002), it also bears stating that if you're on Broadway, you and better be up to the task.
I know right? I'm playing Jack's mother right now and wanted to see what the character was like on Broadway and I'm appalled. I suppose they were trying to go for the whole "older woman" Broadway actress that doesn't have the best voice but she can't even hit the notes, she has to bring them down an octave and her bad timing is hurting me so badly because I know it so well.
I love the human milky white and a lot of the other changes I don't mind, but the witch doesn't have a lot of humor that she needs for this role. Jacks mother too. Little red riding hood seems to just be saying most of her lines without any emotion. I do like the 3 little pigs, but the second wolf kinda takes away from the meaning of the song. I like what the steward did with his charecter, and most of the other actors like the baker and his wife, jack and cinderella were great. It's just these few performances that dont seem invested. The witch doesn't need to sound good when shes singing the lament she should sound in pain not trying to be on key.
1:31:00 Rapunzel tells the Witch: "You just locked me in a tower without company all my life." In the original libretto and Broadway production she said: "You just locked me in a tower without company for fourteen years," Why the change? Did they think keeping Rapunzel at 14-years-old somehow promoted child brides? This was the reason why Disney didn't mention Jasmine's age in ALADDIN. Originally, the law stated she had to be married to a prince before her her 16th birthday, but after the company received flack from parents for clearly stating Ariel's age of sixteen in THE LITTLE MERMAID (who gets married by movie's end), they simply stated that Jasmine had to be married before her next birthday.
Yeah, they do this in all the current productions. Because if Rapunzel were 14, the Baker would have to be 15 according to the Witch's story as would his wife, probably. Obviously, the original is best, but they fixed a serious hole in the story.
Special_Effect I know in the original fairy tale of Rapunzel the witch didn't lock her in the tower until she was around 11 or 12. It was when the witch realized how beautiful Rapunzel was that she locked her in the tower so no one would take her away since she view Rapunzel as her daughter.
ben shafer Yeah, I think that's what they might've been going for, but the witch specifically said, "Oh don't take away the baby!, they shrieked and screeched, but I did and I hide her where she'll never be reached," when talking about how she took Rapunzel from her parents, and most people don't refer to their child that's definitely over two their "baby". So it does sound weird because, just like Special_Effect, that would make her 14 and the Baker 15.
1:45:44 i truly do not like this addition to the script. I think the original scene as in the proshot of the musical is INCREDIBLE, and works so much better.

This Milky White is very distracting. It moves clumsily, and the audience laughs during parts that are not supposed to be funny. Also, the narrator coming out holding the birds on a stick and flapping his other arm like a bird is silly. It distracts from what Cinderella is saying to the birds because the audience guffaws, too.
+musicaltheatergeek79 I like Milky being able to add the emotion to the interactions between her and Jack especially when they part. She's cute dancing during the first midnight. Same here :/
Mines didn't
Kristal Jones mine didnt either. It had sound till the end. Weird.
If this was the preview version, how different was this version and the actual show version.
Some minor things were changed here and there. The most noticeable is the wolf coats changed from blue to tan and they lost the hats. I have to rewatch to listen to see what was changed from the book. Act II has some dialogue differences from the original production.
Prologue is too fast, IMO. But that's just to my ear....
FAR MORE PAINFUL THAN YOOOooouuuUuuRS.
Entering Matrix
I love this revival but the original was so amazing
1:11:50 Best transformation ever 😮

Was Laura Benanti also Cinderella's Mother?
Yep
Was it really this fast, or is it just the recording? The prologue is R U S H I N G
