This is basically the Witch giving up. She has no more reason to live, and she finally realizes how completely backwards the world she lives in is: she's careful and follows the rules and gets punished for other people's mistakes, while they get their happily ever after. The way she sees it, in order to get what you wish, you have to be reckless and pass on the consequences to everyone else. She wished for her life to be back the way it was, before she got her beauty back, but it only got worse.
+myspontaneity I don't think she dies though. She knew she would leave them so I figure she either teleported or got dragged to hell with her mother figuring it's more bearable than earth.
Better to be good than right. Just cuz you follow the rules doesn't mean everything will happen the way it should. Yes, the world is a dangerous place and even though she was right about it, her daughter Rapunzel is killed by the giant (in the theater version).
no, it's blue tones to represent the darkness of the scene. just before the bakers wife died, the whole scenery was a warm orange around Brown just like winter but the second the ground started rumbling, it change to a deep blue

xXShadowOwlXx She lifted the curse that made her a witch at the end of the first act. so in this sing she intentionally loses the beans again, which causes her to be cursed again. the curse is that she becomes old and haggard looking, but gains magical powers. she has decided power and being in control of her own life is more important than physical beauty and acceptance by the common riff raff of society who aren't good anyway.
She's 65 but she's so flawless... The way she acts it just flows with her, so natural. Her expressions and movements are just so perfect, not to mention the intense song and the great music. LOVE IT.
0:10 - 0:20 The way she just flawless switches from like five different expressions under just a few seconds is amazing! Damn good acting, right there.
The witch is hands down the best character in the movie. She just tells it like it is. She's not bad or nice, which is true she's not the villian here, just another victim. She wants to give the giant Jack so that everyone else can live. And Her last curse is leaving the rest of the cast alone. Not giving them anything bad, just leaving them.
No, she's the villain. Thats the best part of this song, she's a hypocrite. She did many bad things: taking a child as a payment for stolen vegetables (seriously, no one with a right mind would say its fair. AND she said she will take the baby before the father took her beans), she imprisoned Rapunzel for 18 years, then banished her for being in love and blinded the prince. Not to mention, she complains they all wanted their wishes no matter what while she did the same - she wanted her beauty back no matter how much harm would it do, and then she blamed Jack and wanted to sacrifice him.

I love when Meryl just screams “Alright mother, when!!!”, just that anger and frustrations and bitterness shining through the roughness of her voice. I always got the implication that the witch hated her mother but could never really go against her what with how powerful she’s implied to be. But this is just the witch absolutely not caring about her fate anymore. Screaming at her mother because for once she doesn’t care what she’d do to her because she’s just so angry and frustrated with it all.

this song makes so much more sense in the original broadway production. Especially the line "your the world", because through the whole show the witch hates the world, and see's it as a horrible dangerous place, which is why she trapped her daughter in the tower. Also it makes since her going all out like this because her daughter was killed, but that din't happen in the movie, so it just escalates pretty quickly.
I love it when she starts throwing those beans as they run to pick them up. I think it manifests the endless greed of humans who run after money and power and the haunting just goes around in endless useless circles.
Laila Oueld Mimti Thinking it was that, or them trying to keep them from sprouting or anything else they can’t possibly know. She’s a witch, and those are her magic beans. They just got done throwing blame around for handling (and mishandling) some of the same beans, who knows what they’d do in the hands of someone who knows how to use them?
Wait, you're saying Steep did better then Bernadette Peters, who brought brilliant comedic timing, and power and sass to the role she originated, is that right?
i'm not familiar with the original, but does it matter if Meryl was better or the original singer? No matter which one you prefer, I think we can all agree that she did an amazing job
@@TimothyRobert93 Yes, in big part due to the singing (When she is not going all out like in the sadder parts of the lament Bernadette Peters can be very flat. Hell in that song alone, hear how she says the phrase “couldn’t you listen?”) but also because the original play, much like a lot of Sondheim plays focuses too much in being hammy and comedic while the movie adaptations of his works allow themselves to be more dramatic to really pull out the darker undertones in the story and the songs. And also because Meryl has the advantage that the songs were arranged pretty damn well. That longer “All right mother, when?!” Makes the climax a lot better imo than the original where it keeps going like the rest of the song.
I love Bernadette's performance, but honestly. . . I cannot choose between her and Meryl because Meryl completely slayed and gave so much depth and humanity to this.
@@honeybee7197 Bernadette gave the perfect vocals, but Meryl gave the whole body expression of frustration. I love her arms in "you'll just do what you do", and we can hear the "you're fucking idiots and you'll just fuck it up again and again and this drives me up the fucking wall!"
Meryl Streep knows how to play a beloved Broadway character without being too over the top and she gave it so much depth and emotion. A truly a great actress.
I'm not a particular fan of the rest of the movie, but this song and specifically the opening 26 seconds are fantastic. "You're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice" is the best description for modern culture that there is. And it's a perfect insult for anyone you know who lacks a spine. *chef's kiss*
I think the artistic choice this movie made (vs the original cast production and other productions I've seen) that really got me was how they had the Witch holding the Baby right before this song. It made so much sense to me; the Beginning and the End, the Parent and the Child, Life and Death. The reason all of this has happened, and well, another reason all of this has happened. In the end, every fairy tale starts with a witch holding a baby that's not hers, raising it to inevitably make (so she says) the same mistakes as the parents did. The cycle is inevitable, life continues to live on despite the wolves and giants. Who is the Witch to argue with that?
I thought it was interesting that she was holding the baby too. Giving her SHHHH more of a maternal feel. And in some ways, she is a maternal figure to the other characters. No matter what you do, children won't listen.
She can do no wrong in my eyes. Absolutely fabulous, this woman. I love the original theater musical, and Mamma Mia was my childhood, so the marriage of both those with the outstanding embodiment of Meryl Streep is my wet dream.
Lyrics: Just give me the boy No! (No) No? You're so nice You're not good You're not bad You're just nice I'm not good I'm not nice I'm just right I'm the witch You're the world I'm a hitch I'm what no one believes I'm the witch You're all liars and thieves Like his father Like his son will be, too Oh, why bother? You'll just do what you do It's the last midnight So, goodbye all Coming at you fast, midnight Soon you'll see the sky fall Here, you want a bean? Have another bean Beans were made for making you rich! Plant them and they soar Here, you want some more? Listen to the roar Giants by the score! Well, you can blame another witch It's the last midnight It's the last verse Now, before it's past midnight I'm leaving you my last curse I'm leaving you alone You can tend the garden, it's yours Separate and alone Everybody down on all fours All right, mother, when? Lost the beans again! Punish me the way you did then! Give me claws and a hunch Just away from this bunch And the gloom And the doom And the boom Cruuunch!
DADGUM Boi It occurs to me that the “when” after Alright Mother is more an exclamation than a question, as in “Once you have enough, say ‘when’.” I could be wrong, of course, just throwing it out there.
Meryl really said, let me show you how to get an Oscar nomination in two minutes. 0:05-0:58 is my favorite part. She just nails that feeling of being so fed up with people who also outnumber you and thus override your position on a matter. The fairy tale group project from hell.
cathy thea2003 Meryl Streep was nominated before for that same award for the devil wear prada and lost it.. It´s also the very first witch she plays, mostrly she plays bitches. When she turned 30 she was offered 3 witches in 1 year, she turned down because she thinks that role demonaises a woman and also she thougt; turning 30 and 3 witches offered in the same year ¿? . So it ´s the first one for Meryl. I trully honor her integrity to do the part and hope she will do more.
I'm not really into musicals, but she's just amazing....she makes everything amazing and makes everyone else look less than mediocre. I'm not fascinated by celebs but I'd be seriously starstruck if I ever met her.
I love how unapologetic Meryl Streep is. The acting and sheer, bitter emotion in this was phenomenal. I'm no theatre buff, but the other versions I watched felt too reserved (except Vanessa, who ripped off that wig like a boss).
This song is very interesting as it justifies the witch misanthropy. She's the designated villain for all of this, the one that is considered the "bad one" even though they all made careless, selfish actions. The witch really gets something right by making them understand that being nice won't make them good and it ties so well into the general message of anti-manichaeism moral of the musical. At the end of the day, she was just a parent who wanted to protect her child and is no worse than the Baker, his wife, Cinderella or Jack et cetera.
I remember always arriving at this part when doing my auditorium walkthroughs. Loved this sequence, it's like the witch just "F you all and kill me now, because these people are garbage."
The whole Last Midnight sequence was a point that caused people to hate it due to the earlier plot change of (Spoiler Warning if you haven’t seen the actual musical) Rapunzel not dying. In the movie, Last Midnight is basically “I’m tired with you all, because all of you are really terrible people”. In the musical, it’s this as well BUT there’s also a darker edge of “my daughter is fricking dead, and I have no will to live anymore”. Without Rapunzel’s death, you never see this aspect in the song.
That furious “Last CURSE” hits differently then if she had been purely singing. Meryl gives the perfect mix of singing and “talking”. Both overflowing with anger, frustration and just bitter resentment at everyone
The costume designers heard there was gonna be wind and went "HELL YES"

I think it's just, yk, the beans were what caused the first and second problems in the story and they don't want a dozen more
I like your theory, but they are picking them up in a panic. They don't want more bean stalks and potentially more giants coming down.
they were picking up the beans so no other beanstalks would grow
No? The beans conjured the giants to come in the first place.
Streep. fucking. KILLED this role. While she isn't as good as the original, she REALLY nailed the feel of the Witch. Like. Got damn.
I think she did much better than the original imo.
+Dean Wilson imo too
Wait, you're saying Steep did better then Bernadette Peters, who brought brilliant comedic timing, and power and sass to the role she originated, is that right?
i'm not familiar with the original, but does it matter if Meryl was better or the original singer?
Granted Meryl is not Bernadette vocally...she is still Meryl effing Streep and a LEGEND in every sense of the word. She made this version her own.
Cheyenne Cook her vocals are fkin amazing
I love Bernadette's performance, but honestly. . . I cannot choose between her and Meryl because Meryl completely slayed and gave so much depth and humanity to this.
In my opinion Meryl’s performance had so much more emotion in it. I could actually feel the lyrics. Bernadette didn’t give that to me.
I like Meryl's voice better.
Being real, this is probably the only scene in the whole movie that perfectly adapts the stage musical.
I love how Meryl says "I'm leaving you alone" while thunder strikes and that expression when she does that 👌 spot on great acting
*chef's kiss*
ngl meryl streep slayed that role
I see this clip and just can't fathom how people said this is the worst movie they've ever seen.
Truly don't understand.
And the people who walked out too. I was literally glued to the screen
doody magoob LOL those people are the ignorant clueless ones who thought Into the Woods wasn't a musical.
pupulicious I didn't know (don't sue me I'm only 13) but I absolutely LOVED IT
VStodder they clearly have no brains or taste
VStodder because those peopel are stupid and dont get what real art is
This woman's voice is the definition of flawless.
Julia Whitmore the Broadway revival with Vanessa Williams did this too!
I thought it was interesting that she was holding the baby too. Giving her SHHHH more of a maternal feel. And in some ways, she is a maternal figure to the other characters. No matter what you do, children won't listen.
Meryl streep is just so. Powerful.
Agree
0:06 freaking amazing acting. You can see the witch just give up and realize they're not worth it. Like "Oh well! I tried!"
She has a amazing voice and till 00:32 it kind a reminds me of when you fighting with someone and trying to show your right
This is the best version! Her emotion, small gestures and movements and her acting says it all!
She can do no wrong in my eyes. Absolutely fabulous, this woman. I love the original theater musical, and Mamma Mia was my childhood, so the marriage of both those with the outstanding embodiment of Meryl Streep is my wet dream.
My whole theater applauded after this.
I never knew Meryl could sing like this
She belted the hell out of this song🙌🏻🙌🏻
Meryl for president 2020
Yes
YES
Its biden
@@emeses1278 LMAO
Lyrics:
Just give me the boy
No! (No)
No?
You're so nice
You're not good
You're not bad
You're just nice
I'm not good
I'm not nice
I'm just right
I'm the witch
You're the world
I'm a hitch
I'm what no one believes
I'm the witch
You're all liars and thieves
Like his father
Like his son will be, too
Oh, why bother?
You'll just do what you do
It's the last midnight
So, goodbye all
Coming at you fast, midnight
Soon you'll see the sky fall
Here, you want a bean?
Have another bean
Beans were made for making you rich!
Plant them and they soar
Here, you want some more?
Listen to the roar
Giants by the score!
Well, you can blame another witch
It's the last midnight
It's the last verse
Now, before it's past midnight
I'm leaving you my last curse
I'm leaving you alone
You can tend the garden, it's yours
Separate and alone
Everybody down on all fours
All right, mother, when?
Lost the beans again!
Punish me the way you did then!
Give me claws and a hunch
Just away from this bunch
And the gloom
And the doom
And the boom
Cruuunch!
DADGUM Boi It occurs to me that the “when” after Alright Mother is more an exclamation than a question, as in “Once you have enough, say ‘when’.” I could be wrong, of course, just throwing it out there.
Ok but how freaking AMAZING, GORGEOUS is the shot at 1:52??🫠
OMG HELL YEAH! Meryl was AWESOME in this movie ❤❤❤
Ah Meryl Streep, you and your bewitching good looks!
One of the most underrated film adaptions.
Meryl Streep is such a queen, the voice is amazing 🔥
I watch this on a daily basis to recharge my soul meryl streep is a legend and can literally do anything
Meryl really said, let me show you how to get an Oscar nomination in two minutes. 0:05-0:58 is my favorite part. She just nails that feeling of being so fed up with people who also outnumber you and thus override your position on a matter. The fairy tale group project from hell.
After all Meryl Streep did won an MTV award for best villain
Luv it
cathy thea2003 Meryl Streep was nominated before for that same award for the devil wear prada and lost it..
Yep and luv her
Soo much
cathy thea2003 She bit
Everything she touches turns gold. Love her
This is my favorite version of this song
I'm not really into musicals, but she's just amazing....she makes everything amazing and makes everyone else look less than mediocre. I'm not fascinated by celebs but I'd be seriously starstruck if I ever met her.
Meryl Streep is just Legend!
THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER!!
Meryl Streep deserves all the good things in the world... A true ARTIST!
I love how unapologetic Meryl Streep is. The acting and sheer, bitter emotion in this was phenomenal. I'm no theatre buff, but the other versions I watched felt too reserved (except Vanessa, who ripped off that wig like a boss).
Between this and mamma Mia. It just proves that Meryl is awesome
YuhItzRubydoobie Can't. Agree. MOOORE!
Meryl Streep !!! I need to see this movie!
I love mamma mia!
Into the woods is my favorite movie
Same here! =D I listen to the music every day!
Finally! I thought I was alone.
Scott Stephen You Are Not Alone. =D
No one is alone ;)
I was never alone when I went to go see it.
Meryl portrays every role GLORIOUSLY! Always PERFECTION ♥
0:20 i love this part
This is the sound of someone who has had enough 💓 🌟 Meryl Streep. My superstar.
FREAKING QUEEN! Meryl why u have to be so good?
I’m leaving you my last curse. I’m leaving you alone.
That line really resonated with me because it’s one of my greatest fears.
i can’t believe this movie came out in 2014. crazy how much time flies. love this song!
this song is so UGHHH IT GIVES ME LIFE
For someone not famous for her singing, she’s incredible! This is a very difficult Sondheim score!
She has been in 4 musical movies now. Are you sure?
1:30 lol that background music makes me think meryl is dancing to jazz
I love when she goes, "Im the hitch, i'm what no one believes, im the witch!". The music is great there.
I watched this movie at night and this part scared the hell out of me. Meryl Streep did a great job
still a phenomenal performance to watch years later!!
Such a powerful vibrato
i’m in love with meryl streep
0:26 this part just gave me chills
Meryl Streep is there anything she can't do? AMAZING!!
R u an actress
One of the best songs in anything ever.
The theatrics and hand gestures, just great.
Meryl improved this video milestones
WHAT?!? Miss Girl showed up, showed out and DELIVERED in this scene!!!! I haven’t seen this movie since it came out… will be watching this tonight!
I can't believe people hated this movie. I guess it was too real for them. All actions have consequences.
Brent Thomas it's because it wasn't faithful enough to the source material
I liked it in a vacuum, but, as the guy above me said, it wasn't fateful to the source material, which threw people off before they even saw it.
I'm glad it strayed from the source material.
Now I don't have to look at a wolf penis while watching a disney movie. How awkward.
Oh wow. The dramatics. Meryl is amazing at everything she does.
By far the most talented acctress of our time! Superb singing voice also!
That furious “Last CURSE” hits differently then if she had been purely singing. Meryl gives the perfect mix of singing and “talking”. Both overflowing with anger, frustration and just bitter resentment at everyone
She is just Meryl.she does everything. she is brilliant❣️
She looks nice for 70 years old just love her
SHE KILLED IT!
I just love when Meryl Streep sings, she's just amazingly talented !
