    Good job.
    I use the reverse lighting schedule for my fuge and a DIY recirculating Co2 scrubber that I have attached to my skimmer air intake. The airline intake for the skimmer is from the lid of the skimmer cup that runs through the Co2 scrubber, so the air to the skimmer has a lower Co2 level since it is already scrubbed. I also have a solenoid valve T’d off the same line to ambient air. The Ph probe then opens and closes the valve via the controller to basically turn on or off the Co2 scrubber to nail the Ph.
    I dont like the buffer media’s, they seem to cause more trouble than they are worth.

    This was great information! I had no idea RODI water was acidic! My pH hovers around 8.03-8.05 night and day, from what I’ve seen when I check it. Once in a while it’s at 8.15-ish. I use the Pinpoint pH monitor that has a probe, and I check it every night before I go to bed and generally once at some point in the day. I’m going to start checking it in the mornings, see where it sits. I use several methods of elevating pH: reverse light cycle with a huge mat of dense Chaeto, a constantly running air stone in my sump below the protein skimmer (Holy Salt Creep Batman!) attached to an air pump beside an open window, an air line from outside into my protein skimmer, and as much surface turbulence as I can generate while still maintaining the flow I need in the tank. I also recently started dosing kalkwasser. All of these things, as I added them, increased the pH a little bit. And now, I think I’ll look into adding the Seachem buffer into my RODI top up reservoir, putting a tiny bit in every time I refill it. Lol, I’ll let you know how it goes! Thank you Ania! 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV
      @GalleryAquaticaTV  4 года назад

      Hi! And thank you so much for taking the time to share your methods in this wonderful comment.
      RODI being 7.0 with 0 Buffering capacity is “Acidic” in comparison to desired Marine water at 8.25 ;)
      So we use the same dose of Marine buffer 5g / 80L when we fill up the reservoirs and our pH stays at 8.3 year round. But have had positive results using even less than 5g/80L of Marine buffer to RODI, the theory there being there must have been adequate ionic balance in the main display for it to not require as much buffer to maintain equilibrium that week. :)
      Being aware of it is the first step. Sometimes we are topping up with comparatively large volumes of RODI, if our natural tests high.

    • @Reefgrrl
      @Reefgrrl 4 года назад

      Right! pH of 7 is actually neutral but that makes it more acidic than is desirable for marine water. 👍🏻👍🏻 Thank you for that clarification. I forgot to mention, I also employ micro bubble scrubbing using outside air, for two hours every night between midnight and 2 am. 😁

      I have heard people think the Borate/boron in the buffer "tricks" the test kit into reading 8.3. But as Ania explained water chemistry is like a fruit salad, by having a more complete salad is the test actually being tricked or is it reflecting a better fruit bowl? I cant vouch for the level of education by those that think it a "trick" but I do know seachem put a lot of science and research (which is readily available) behind the pk/kh research.

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV
      @GalleryAquaticaTV  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the positive comment Jeff.
      I believe there are a few factors at play as to some resistance to use of buffers by reefers within the community.
      Firstly, there are probably some inferior products on the market labeled “pH buffer”. Some even contain phosphate which is highly undesirable for Reef Aquaria. Some people may have have experienced fast uncontrolled fluctuations by using them which scare them.
      It’s also possible that pH data and testing is being undertaken too soon after the addition of the buffer, skewing someone’s perception of the product’s performance. And lastly, perhaps because the best (blends of) buffers tend to be higher price, this alone can cause people to believe it isn’t a necessary cost for Reefing success.
      IMO - If even to promote benefits of growing coralline to naturally prevent disassociation of live rock to release trapped phosphates , there are just so many encouraging reasons to identify elevate and maintain pH levels that we feel it’s certainly worthwhile. 😊

      Well I'd say depends what you use. I mean it usually raises alk and does what it's supposed to do. But folks adding 2 part n then following up with a buffer for ph and not allowing the 2part to balance out I could see a prob. However I by no means know it all. But that's my understanding. Interested in why you would be dead against it. I don't use it myself as my 2part and chato do alright. I do have anywhere from.2-.4 swing every night tho. Usually drops from 8.3 to 8.0 but like 8.07 or something. I dose at night and morning by hand and that's all I need. But still interested in learning more. Lol I'm a jukie with saltwater so yea

    I don't chase PH and I have amazing polyp extension, coloration, and growth in my reef tank. It sits at 7.8. I have tried getting it up by creating surface tension by putting 2 powerheads at the surface of the water as well as the outlet and I took that 2 steps further and added a wooden airstone to the sump as well as an airline directly from outside. None of that moved my PH at all. This is on a tank that has 3 small fish and is nowhere near overstocked. The only thing I have not done is dose buffers such as Kalkwasser. With that said, I have not done so because my corals are vibrant and healthy as well as my fish. I don't dose anything and my tank stays at 9 Alk, 440 Calc, 1350 Magnesium, 5-10 Nitrates and .07 Phosphate. All of that is achieved through only doing a 10-20% water change once a week.

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV
      @GalleryAquaticaTV  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your story Travis. I’m so glad you feel your aquarium inhabitants aren’t suffering from your acidic parameters.
      We aren’t here to debate - We’re here to help!
      At 7.8 your water conditions would even be promoting the disassociation of Calcium carbonate of your beneficial coraline algae and the bound phosphates within it and your live rock (if you use that), versus the desired effect of growing beneficial coraline algae to help lock it up.
      A lack of dosing is a sure indication of decreased skeletal growth.
      Have you tried a CO2 scrubbing media on your skimmer intake such as made by TLF or ATI?
      Kalkwasser - Calcium hydroxide - in a saturated solution has a pH of 12-12.5 and for this it’s use can promote dramatic (unfavourable) pH swings. I would suggest (especially if you use bicarbonate as your KH source) that if you’re going to trial heading down the path of relying on buffers to maintain pH stability to at least consider and try the Seachem Marine buffer, even if only added to your RODI.

    • @lonestarpatriot876
      @lonestarpatriot876 4 года назад

      @@GalleryAquaticaTV I don't run a skimmer. This is on a nano tank that gets weekly water changes. I also don't use Kalkwasser or dose anything as my paramaters stay good with regular water changes. My Alk sits at 9, Calcium at 440, Magnesium at 1350, Nitrates between 5 and 10, Phosphates at .07.
      The reason I do not dose Kalkwasser is because I have heard it messes with your other paramaters such as Alk. I don't have an Alk problem or any other problem as my paramaters are good already for a LPS and Soft Coral tank so I am hesitant to try things like Kalkwasser.
      I heard that the Seachem does this same thing. I don't know if that is true or not but if it is, I would prefer to not do that when everything in my tank is doing good. Maybe you can answer that.
      And when I say that this is on a nano tank, I mean a 13.5 gallon nano so hooking up a ton of equipment to it such as skimmers, Co2 Scrubbers, Zeovit Reactors etc. etc etc., does not make a whole lot of sense.

      simmo56able I think it definitely depends on the quality of the buffer in question. At the end of the day Carbonates end up also contributing to building coraline algae, coral skeletons and invertebrate skeletons. The elements within the buffers are also beneficial to reef inhabitants in general ie. I dose Boron regularly to increase reds in the SPS tank.
      Once ionic balance is achieved everything else kind of falls into place. We haven’t had to dose any more into Cam’s giant DT for over 3 years, other than into the RODI reservoir.

      Han Thi thanks for the question.
      First up, test pH and KH. Then measure out 5g per 80 L of the buffer. Mix well with a few cups of RO. Place in sump area of high flow. Wait a few hours - up to 24. Test pH.
      You may want to turn off your KH dosing for a day or so (our daily draw is about 1.4-1.8 dkH depending on the system so less than one day is all we would require)
      Instructions on the jar state initial dose may require to be repeated if ionic balance is not achieved from one dose (this is rare but can happen).
      From here on in we only add buffer to the RODI.

    New reefer here, just wondering, I've seen a few videos from various sources, and they didn't seem to keen on using PH buffers, I forget the specific reasons, but they advocated against it. Would you still recommend the use of PH buffers? Or would kalkwasser be a better option? Thanks in advance.

    Ania mentioned about a trick of using RO+seachem marine buffer solution as top-off water. How do you make this top-off solution?
    It contains borate. Will it raise B element?

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV
      @GalleryAquaticaTV  4 года назад +1

      It contains a lot more than just Borate, I just used that molecule as one example to represent the idea that it isn’t simply bicarbonate and why bicarbonate does not and will not be capable to produce the same result . In saying that our ATO is 90L so I add 5 grams (if even that) to the reservoir when we top it up.
      I don’t think it contributes to an overall excessively elevated boron level because within the buffer the elemental role is occupied with holding pH.
      I don’t manually dose boron daily as suggested by our choice in supplementation but do add it at full recommended dose manually whenever the red Acro and Monti doesn’t look as red as it should. :) we have bigger potential issues with trace element dosing because we use natural seawater daily to top up our coral selling tanks. ICP tests have never shown elevated Boron in our results.

    How much does the buffer raise alkalinity? The problem that i have a nano tank and my corals don't consume enough dkh for me to be able to dose things that increase dkh.. my pH is awful . Between 7.4 and 7.8

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV
      @GalleryAquaticaTV  Год назад +1

      It says on the bottle, A full tank dose will increase it by 1.25 dkH . Our daily draw is more than that in each system so all we do is turn off the alk dosing for 1 day. In your case if you are worried and want to work on it slowly just add the buffer to the RODI you use for topping up evaporation. It won’t fully fix the equilibrium imbalance but it will prevent it from getting much worse

    So after being hesitant to use a buffer on a system that had perfect paramaters outside of a PH of 7.8, and after being told by this channel that was acidic even though they clearly state in the video that anything under 7 is acidic, and after being told by many other reefers to not use a buffer or it will raise my Alk, I decided to give the Seachem Buffer a try in my Auto Top Off as she advised in the video. Big mistake!!! I followed all directions and what happened was while my PH went up to 8.3, my Alkalinity shot up to 16. Everything in my tank started suffering to the point of dieing. My corals started going down hill, my inverts flipped themselves over and started going down hill, and my tank went south quick. Luckily I am very on top of my tank and took emergency action to save everything. I ended up doing so while only losing one coral. It took a full month to get my Alkalinity back to it's normal level of 9. You can't change your Alkalinity fast, it must be done slowly. And I was lucky to only lose one coral. This was on a tank that was beautiful and was having zero issues. I had Coraline all over my rock, invert shells etc.. My corals were beautiful, thriving, and growing. My advice is to not use a buffer to raise your PH from 7.8-8.3 when your tank paramaters are great outside of PH and everything is healthy and thriving. I made the mistake of listening to this and paid the price.

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV

      You must have used the wrong buffer (there are several very similar) or massively overdosed. Get on top of that pH and your tank will come back😊 Cam

      Travis Kibel did you use Seachem Marine buffer? Blue Label?
      Here’s the published Science behind why what you say simply can’t be possible by using Seachem Marine Buffer:
      www.seachem.com/downloads/articles/Marine-Water-pH-Control.pdf

    • @lonestarpatriot876
      @lonestarpatriot876 4 года назад

      @@GalleryAquaticaTV I used the same exact buffer. I don't care what the science says as I know what it did. My tank was running beautifully. The second I stopped using it my tank started to recover and my Alkalinity started dropping back to normal levels. And no, I did not overdose it.

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV
      @GalleryAquaticaTV  4 года назад +1

      If you’re sure it was the same buffer and you didn’t massively overdose it, then the alk spike HAS to be caused from something else. Either that or you got a false reading on your alk test. Cam

    • @lonestarpatriot876
      @lonestarpatriot876 4 года назад

      @@GalleryAquaticaTV I know my reading was correct because I used 3 different test kits. And I know the product was correct too.
      I also document everything on this tank, everyday, throughout the day. This tank is monitored and tested daily. The only change that was made was adding the PH Buffer. And the correct dosage was used.
      I have been warned by other reefers not to add a PH Buffer. I also have been told to do so by some. So, I decided to run my own experiment by using the stuff to find out for myself rather than just listen to people. The reality is, it worked by raising my PH while messing up my Alkalinity, and had a very negative effect on the tank and everything in it.
      My tank is now back to thriving without it and a PH of 7.8, which is what it was before starting this real life experiment.

    This video makes me wonder if kalkwasser is not used in Australia

    • @GalleryAquaticaTV
      @GalleryAquaticaTV  4 года назад +1

      It’s certainly available in Australia but not as commonly used as Calcium chloride, Calcium Carbonate or Calcium gluconate. Though Kalkwasser can be cheaper and carries added benefits to being capable of decreasing phosphate concentration...
      The main disadvantage of using Kalkwasser/ Calcium hydroxide that its pH of 12-12.5 (when in a saturated solution) can cause the pH to rise too quickly for the calcium concentration required to supplement the natural sea water we collect to our desired 440 ppm Ca.
      Also, on a minor side note; is it rumoured Kalkwasser can contain traces of silicates, and we aren’t in a great position with the selling tanks to utilise our efforts trying to manage any kind of potential diatomaceous blooms.
