  • Have you ever spilled anything inside your Instant Pot?
▼ Click below to read more▼
It's easy to thoroughly clean the lid and the inner pot, but what if you've spilled food down inside without the inner pot?
You can only reach maybe 1/2" under the heating plate to clean it, so if you've had an accident and gotten food underneath, you'll need to remove the heating plate completely to give your pressure cooker a thorough cleaning.
In this video I show you how to remove the heating plate in order and clean underneath it.
Please note: Disassembling your Instant Pot may void your warranty, so proceed at your own risk.

Thanks, that worked exactly as you said! I dropped dry beans in the pot without the liner and after a lot fell out I could hear what seemed like a whole lot more that would NOT come out. Ugh! I did take the bottom off but when I saw all the wiring I closed it back up. Then I found your video and it was SO helpful. Step by step, easy peasy. Thank you so much!!! Excellent teacher. You remind me of my late dad who showed me so many mechanical things over the years. :-)

I can’t seem to get the screw out of the bottom and I’ve tried two different Phillips screwdrivers. Any tips for somebody with arthritis in their hands to get this done? I was careless and put black-eyed peas in the Instant pot after I had taken out the stainless steel pot insert? I feel really stupid.

Brilliant video -- clear narration, concise, to the point, great camera angles. Very, very helpful. Here is another tip -- when undertaking this project, work on a big enough surface so that you can create an enclosure around the work with some rolled up towels, in case you accidentally drop one of the tiny parts and it starts to roll away. Please don't ask how I learned this trick.

An instant pot saver, indeed! I accidentally poured wet rice into the works. Two days of drying out and following this video and our instant pot is back in business. Good suggestion to take a photo of the innards first, because ours is not quite the same (several more wires). Our outside cover screw was six pointed. Fortunately my socket wrench set had a six point driver. I also used the socket wrench to remove and replace the two nuts and washers. Can't thank you enough

I had to do that, too. I think that is because my model is the Duo series, so a slightly later model. I just kept track of which screws went where. There were also washers on all my screws, so I had to keep track of them, too. Will test tomorrow! But the gunk from the steel-cut oats and water was never going to all come out by itself. Moldy. At least I'm not the only person who did something like this!

    Thanks for the video!
So I was getting ready to make some nice black beans for dinner. I always do a quick high-temp soak first. I took out the insert, carried it over to the 1-pound bag of beans. Carefully opened the bag, then walked back to my instant pot and dumped them inside--without the insert.
All the shaking and banging I did wouldn't get the last dozen beans out. It just rattled and rattled.
I followed your video carefully and got the beans out and everything back together. I have some pretty small socket wrenches, (it's 7mm for the two nuts) so I didn't have to use vice grips.
    Thanks again!

I found this helpful and made me want to see if I could do this. I know this is for like, dried bits of food or rice that falls down inside the heat plate. But this led me down the rabbit hole after I poured about 1 cup of coconut milk into the pot without the liner pot. I immediately flipped the pot over to drain but all that did was drain coconut milk into more areas of the guts where all the workings are. I have the ultra and it’s more complex and has more wires and instead of bolts to hold the heat plate it has three screws plus the little one that’s located in the white silicone tray thing. One of which is under the the circuit board, so that had to be removed as well as what I think is the temperature sensor. (Has the silicone white protector tray with the black wires connected in blue to the circuit board)
I took phone photos and put the screws on sticky notes with a description. EVERYTHING (outer metal sleeve as well) had to be unscrewed and wiped down with q-tips, tooth picks, small pieces of paper towels and small cotton towels. There was coconut milk in between the screws, washers, brackets that hold the circuit board and the bottom of the circuit board. Luckily the circuit board did not have any coconut milk on it! And I did not attempt to take any wires off the circuit board except for the plugged in ones. But there was no way to access the screws for the heat plate without taking the circuit board AND the temp sensor thing. 3.5 hours later, all assembled, I tested with water on high sauté. Tiny amount of smoke wafted up from inside between the liner pot and the pot itself. Now to test the temperature settings to make sure I did not mess up that part. The control pad looked untouched by the coconut milk and it’s still working after the disassembly and reassembly. A replacement base for a Ultra 80 is $95 plus shipping/tax. I figured I might get lucky and save not having to replace it. I learned a lot about this instant pot. I paid for my stupidity. And next it will be to find out if I pay again if the cleanup of this instant pot still fails.

My issue was dumping a hot mixture of BBQ sauce and grape jelly from the meatballs back into the pot. I didn't realize that my friend had put the pot in the sink to soak. Then of course, I did the same as you and turned it upside down to attempt to drain the pot, which only made the guts get drenched with the sauce... clear to the inside of the top of the pot. I even had to remove the lid pressure sensor. Since I didn't find a video of the process to completely disassemble my IP DUO 6, my friend shot the video of me completing the process back to where this one stopped. I finally got to bed at 5:30am on New Years Day, MUCH later than usual!

Great video, straight to the point with no distractions, and would really like to go after lid in a similar strip down manner, however, avoiding, pliers if we could use a nut driver or wrench/socket if necessary. I think that if someone is brave and smart enough to attempt to tackle such a job, then they will be willing to obtain a more proper tool, call it a bit of audience analysis.

Taylor Garrett, a small hex key is what I used. I dumped rinsed, un-soaked pinto beans in my pot without the liner. (face palm) I jiggled the beans out. Luckily there was barely any water, but I wanted to see if there was visible moisture under the plastic plate. I am gong to use a hair dryer on low cool to gently dry it out, just in case.

Thank you so much for this video. I purchased a LUX 60 V3 at goodwill for $10 yesterday so I would have an extra bowl and the inside needed cleaning terribly so I told myself that's alright it will clean up nicely with an SOS pad. Went to clean it and removed the pan, then realized it was filthy under there as well. I didn't stop where you did and took this one completely down to clean out the grease someone had apparently used in it. It seems that it was used as a pressure fryer instead and I'm pretty sure we can't do that. I cleaned it all up, put it back together, put my ring from my DUO in it today (I don't want to use that ring so I tossed it) and steamed some asparagus tonight.
Both the DUO 60 and LUX 60 seem to have interchangeable lids as well. The bodies of the two are different, my DUO is shorter and wider than the LUX which is taller and skinnier and they have most of the same options on them.

If you've dropped water or food in your Instant Pot without the liner in, don't immediately turn it over. Have someone hold the pot up while you take off the bottom plate. Notice that all the connections have white plastic "umbrellas" over them. If water or food rain down on them from above, they somewhat protect the connections. But if you turn the pot over right away, whatever is on the bottom plate will be dumped back onto the wires. You'll have less mess to clean if you take off the bottom plate as I mentioned.

Thank you. I tried VERY FOOLISHLY to boil a small batch of whole shrimp in my IP. After days of cleaning, the stench from inside the base was unbearable. I took off the bottom casing and poured 1/4 c white vinegar and rolled it around to clear the inside walls. I poured vinegar in the base top and let in run through to do the same. I used a large paint brush to clean higher up the walls and under the base on the inside. It is drying now...and smells like white vinegar...which is VASTLY better than the shrimp. I will post after I try it out tomorrow.

WARNING!!! Firstly, thank you for giving detailed instructions. The part about the hard-to-remove screw should get an edit. That screw in my case had the stem shear before it loosened. It's a low-quality screw for that application, almost like they want it to fail if it gets worked on. It might have helped if I'd done it while hot, which has its own set of concerns. That part appears to be a delicate thermal switch, and without that screw making tight contact with the heater element casting I'm assuming the pot will malfunction or be unsafe.

Hello :) Fantastic demonstration, but I don't think I would be keen enough to remove the mechanisms to get to the element lol! I wondered whether it is possible to use a narrow strip of silver foil and gently place that around the element to protect the space beneath the plate inside the inner pot? Would that create short circuit issues? I don't mean to pack the foil underneath, but just lay it gently around the outer rim in the base to prevent food from collecting? Let us know won't you? Thanks so much in advance!

Question!!Where can I buy a new heating plate for my damaged Instant Pot?

  • @MariaSilva-xz6yg
    @MariaSilva-xz6yg 4 года назад +1

I dumped water in the pot thinking the liner was in it. I quickly unplugged it and dried it with a paper napkin and then with a dryer inside and under the pot. Then I tried to open it and removed the first screw, as you show, but since my rice cooker was not the same, there was no way to remove the bottom lid. If I don't use the rice cooker for 3 days so that it dries completely, can I use it again without any problems? As the wether is very hot it may not get to rust, what do you think?

If yours doesn’t have the two nuts holding the plate, you’ll have two large screws instead. One is under the circuit board. To get that off you have to undo the three screws holding the round plastic base (the stand), then the black case that holds the circuit board will unclip where two of the screws were.

I'm pretty good at doing repairs, and followed your video with my IP Ultra after having a gallon of milk boil over into the bottom. I'm now getting a C6L error code after putting it all back together. The ultra is a little different than the one you worked on, a few more wires, but all else looks similar. any suggestions?

Very helpful but there have been a couple design changes.
The bottom screw has a torx head, not a philips head now.
The pot sensor now has a ground wire.
Warning! These are really cheap screws and the heads strip easily. Make sure you have the right sized bit, place a lot of pressure when unscrewing, and don’t strip it!
    Thanks for the excellent instructions

Another design change! Instead of two hex nuts holding the heating element (in addition to the Phillips head screw) there now seem to be 3 Phillips head screws, one of which is under the circuit board!!!

Based on some diagrams I think the tightness of the heating element would affect the pressure sensor's calibration. I'd expect a torque spec on the screws, at least the one that's hard to line up, because it looks like that one connects the element to the pressure sensor (but then why is that a Philips and not something with better engagement?). I'd also expect a need to recalibrate the pressure sensor after reassembly. But hopefully these parts are more independent and robust in their margin for error than I'm imagining. I fear having things cook totally differently after reassembly.

Considering that this affects the pressure sensor, would disassembly/reassembly be dangerous? Worried about turning my pressure cooker into a bomb.

5:15 I believe the piece on the inside of the instant pot (that connects to CN103 on the board) is actually a thermometer (thermister), not a pressure sensor.

  • @voxelmaniam

Your tutorial is a good starting point but unfortunately there are several different Instant Pot designs. Not all of them are as easy to disassemble. Ours has three screws and a thermal cut off switch attached to the hot plate and requires the circuit board to be removed to reach one of the screws. Ultimately pretty much a full disassembly is required.

Good video and informative. BUT be aware I did this with my Instant Pot Duo Gourmet and the inside is quite a bit different. I had to remove many more things including the control board. After all of that there were three washer plates that were under the heating element. The one in the video doesn't look like they had any. Those are a royal pain to get back on. I had to balance the instant pot on one hand while I tried lining everything up. It took maybe close to an hour from start to finish. Definitely not 5 minutes.

Well this is pretty scary looking, but I dumped rice in my instant pot and now am receiving an error code so I think this is my only solution. Thank you for these instructions. I plan to use them step by step. If I would have taken the bottom off and seen those wires without these instructions, I would have given up right away.

YOU ARE EXTRAORDINARY ! I MUST ADMIT ***** I do repair many complicated computers mother boards but i am little afraid of this one !!! I am thinking if I use the aluminum foil rolled up around the heating element what happens ? the foil will surround the heat-element plate & will block the food debris to get down to the bottom except liquid spill ! can it make short circuit > I don't think so but it's easy to throw away a piece of aluminum foil and replace it with new one. I do all the time for the drip pan on the electric stove !

I watched your video because I had soup poured in my 8 qt IP by mistake. I followed your instructions, made sure everything dried well, sat overnight. I did a test run with 2 cups water - 5 minutes. At the end of 5 minutes, the pot started spewing steam like a quick release but noone touched it. I opened the vent and let it finish. Now I'm concerned about using it. Would appreciate any info you might know that caused this. My IP was a Mother's Day gift so hope i can salvage it. When I took the heating unit out, the 3 elements were discolored. I wonder if that is a factor. Thank you for any help.

I was trying to clean the IP, for there was food underneath the heating plate. I have disassembled the bottom to release the plate. When I notice a screw with a plastic covering it, I cleaned the plastic thinking that that was one of the screws holding the heating plate. I unscrewed it. Happens that It was a adjusting screw for a relay that I don't know what it is for.
How can I re-adjust correctly that screw?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately the only way to know would be to test it. Assuming that it's now dry, I would suggest taking it apart and cleaning everything as best you can with something like a toothbrush (dry - don't introduce more liquid to it). Then reassemble and run it through a few different cycles to see.

Well darn, I dumped black beans into my brand new InstaPot Gourmet. I followed your directions, no problem, until, well, my pot has screws instead of nuts. I stripped the second screw and can’t remove it (or the lining). So $100 down the drain because they don’t take returns here in Mexico. I’ve reassembled it for now, but wonder if you know how I can remove the stripped screw. I tried the rubber band trick, but it didn’t work :( Thanks for the clear instructions!
