@@tonyfro23 indeed! Back then they may have used a bit of reverb, but the rest was just balancing the volume in a mix. Very minimal post processing.
I wish we would go back to that. All the top songs today are not really songs- they are computer generated drum tracks and synth hooks on repeat for 2 minutes with layered processed human vocals carrying a 2 bar repeating melody.
In this day and age, you don't even need musicians anymore.

Bobby Hatfield did this long before Elvis did. Bobby died at age 63 in a hotel room while on tour with Bill Medley, the other Righteous Brother. He never did the show. This was in Kalamazoo MI in 2003. only 50 minutes from my house! Almost had bought tickets to show. I was a school music teacher, grew up on this music, and cried when I heard the news the next morning. Bobby's parents were in the audience on the TV show here, his mom had never seen him sing professionally. He nailed this performance for her. You won't hear these high nots on the record. This is 10 times better than the studio recording he did. This song belongs to Bobby forever now.

Not to mention getting to enjoy the fresh reactions of the young people who are just now experiencing the majesty of the moment for themselves.

You mentioned Elvis. Consider this: anyone you may know who recorded this were just covering this. It is universally considered the best even though it was a cover of a lesser hit. For a man to stand there with a wired microphone long before Autotune was thought of and was not produced in a studio with the best equipment available in 65. This was pure talent. At the end, he simply smiles instead of gasping for breath.

You most likely heard the studio version of Unchained Melody in the movie, "Ghost".
Untold millions of women have "blushed" and fallen in love when they heard Bobby Hatfield singing this song so perfectly.
I only recently heard that he suffered from extreme stage fright and would throw up violently before going on stage.
He was only 25 at the time this film clip from their appearance on The Andy Williams Show was made and he was suffering from an upper respiratory infection; if you see the full cut of the video with Andy chatting with them in between songs, Bobby is huffing & puffing like he just ran a lap around the parking lot.
His mother was also on the audience and he was even more nervous, afraid that he might disappoint her.
He didn't disappoint her or any female on the planet!

M - This is one of the best love songs ever recorded in the English language. Your mother's generation also blushed when they heard it...and your grandmothers'...and your great grandmothers'. And...it will have the same effect for generations to come. It was written for the 1955 movie "Unchained." The movie flopped, but this song has been covered countless times, including by Elvis. A music database (mention of which causes YT to delete my posts) lists almost 600 recorded versions. Many great singers have recorded "Unchained Melody," but this version by Bobby Hatfield (one-half of The Righteous Brothers) is widely acknowledged to be the best!

Apologies if someone else had said this: The song was from a 1955 movie called "Chained" about a chain gang prison. It was sung by a black opera singer named Todd Duncan (one of the prisoners) - it's on RUclips. The song won an Academy Award in 1955. For the 1955 versions, check out Roy Hamilton and Sam Cooke (on RUclips). But this version was the one that really took off. Bobby was the one that started singing "I need your love" up an octave, which others have copied afterwards.

Bobby Hatfield nailed it. Just killed it. This song is rightly referred to as a panty dropper. Makes the ladies swoon.

This song was the main theme song in the movie 'the Ghost', with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, late '80 or early '90. Good movie.
