The love between you both is lovely to see. How wonderful that Sarah was able to bring some laughter and sunshine to her dad when he was dying. When my mom was dying of cancer, she lost all her hair. So, I bought her a rainbow wig and decorated her hospital room. I slept in a chair for over a week. After several days my mom wasn't able to urinate. So, I helped her to the toilet and as she sat there, she started reminiscing. She told me the story of when I was born, and how the hospital wouldn't let her leave to go home until she peed. She said that the minute I started nursing from her breast, she flooded the bed. As I stood there, leaning against the doorway, I said, "Mom, if you expect me to do that now, you are sadly mistaken." She burst out laughing and finally started peeing. This is one of my favorite memories. My family was outraged that it "appeared" I was making light of my mother's death time. How dare I be so disrespectful. Our culture has made death something to shun and run away from. Of course, it is a serious and sad time. Tears will flow and we will miss our loved one. However, I think it is vital that we help our loved one leave the planet with a smile on their face. Sending loving and peace-filled thoughts to everyone.

5 years since my father passed and the tears are flowing. My Dad was a great Dad. He was funny, hilarious to us, he was thoughtful and kind, he was, he was insightful, he was adventurous(he took us to the beach, camping, canoeing, taught us how to fish and how to be very quiet when on a trail)but most of all he was strong. He was diagnosed with a schwanoma brain tumor in 06 sitting on his hearing and balanace nerve, benign but could only be hollowed out, went back fulltime to work, 2010 brought double knee surgery, a 2nd hernia(had surgery for 1st in his 20's) and radiation treatments for the tumor, went back to work fulltime, 2014 his scoliosis kicked in bigtime and we discovered he had fluid on the brain, had surgery in Jan 2015, never returned to work after this but lived 3 1/2 years passing at 80 but never giving up, doing laps around the house with his walker. Oh, I forgot, he loved to eat, going out for breakfast was his favorite thing to do, the last night he was at home, I called him for dinner and he had the biggest smile on his face but instead of following me to the kitchen he went to the front door and fell on his head, passed a month later due to bleeding on the brain. I thought he was going to be ok because after I helped him up he ate his dinner. I still miss him everyday.

My Dad was on Palliative at home, dying from the same thing Sarah’s Dad died from (Renal failure), and my Mom was in Long term care with end-stage Dementia. The 4 Sisters took turns sleeping over, and we’d all end up at the house together at some point, each day. We laughed our asses off at some points. Luckily Dad had a great Palliative team that came to the house, and he loved it when we were all goofing around. He was a big advocate of celebrating departures as well as entries. Just through happen-stance it was a few hours before the Funeral Home could come to pick him up. All the family that were in town came over, and we ended up having a mini Irish Wake, with himself in the middle of the Living Room in his hospital bed. Again - it was not morose in the least - we reminisced and laughed. Nothing disrespectful or inappropriate about that at all. I’m sorry for your loss, Sarah. I’m sure it was a blessing for your Dad to be surrounded by his beloved family as he departed. Shalom to you and your family.

One of the things I love about this show that Jimmy absolutely picked up from Letterman was how to make a show feel like family. Dave had his mom do remotes and whatnot, but it was also how he featured the crew (e.g., Biff, Hal Gurney, etc.). Jimmy takes it so much further: Uncle Frank, Aunt Chippy, Cousins Sal and (my favorite) Mikki. Even Sarah with her boyfriend sitting next to Jimmy's wife (and regular part of the show) while they talk about family milestones and mutual friends and knowing just what to get his ex-girlfriend for Xmas/Hanukkah. Every talk show host has his strengths and weaknesses, but Jimmy has been my favorite for years now, and this is one of the reasons why.

It's interesting how 2 people who were so intimate can manage to be friends after the breakup.

From an interview with Andy Cohen, Jimmy said: "It definitely took some time. It was never like where we didn’t like each other, hated each other or anything like that. But it definitely took some time to be comfortable enough to be friends again.” There's a wide gamut of reasons to break up, and it seemed like their relationship ended as a mutual realization they were growing apart. Even Sarah joked that after she split from her recent ex (Michael Sheen), if he were in town and both single, they'd still bang.

Same with Conan and Lisa Kudrow(sp?). They are still friends after their fling. I think it takes time, as long as there is no hate or disdain after the breakup, and it needs to be a clean break. I've tried it twice and it was a mess, because we kept getting back together but it was an unhealthy relationship, so I had to do a clean break. The second time was fine because we had an understanding.

Not all women can really pull off being friends with their ex-boyfriends after a break-up, but it really seems like Sarah does it, especially after all these years have passed. Great to see!
