Negative windshear landings

- Negative windshear (or wind shear) is when any headwind component drops sharply - or a tailwind component increases sharply. The effect on an aircraft is a sudden loss of air speed and lift, and can lead to a stall.
The four attempted landings here were all on days of strong winds this winter at BHX. The final three were in crosswinds, but in the first (by a Citation 560XL) the wind was along the runway, and the pilot elected to divert to Leeds-Bradford rather than try a second approach.

0:33 Still one of the smoothest Ryanair landings I've seen...
@@EdekaKuchen chill out dude, are you a pilot at Ryanair or something? You know what that makes sense, tell me, do you guys have to replace the landing gear after every 2nd or 3rd landing?
@@EdekaKuchen well it’s not that hard to become one, all you have to do is slam a plane into the ground and Ryanair will find and hire you on the spot.
@@EdekaKuchen Wow you sound butthurt. Somebody must have hurt your sensitive little feelings.
To the pilot flying the big twin turbo prop at minute 140, excellent landing. Even if you never get to see my compliment. let me tell you, that was very difficult in that type of aircraft
The plane is a Dash 8, and I completely agree that was an awesome landing. That was textbook
He did a textbook landing, you don't see that very often!
The sudden dive at 1:26 is alarming but the actual touchdown is smooth as silk, good job.
he wanted to td on a certain part of the rw and that's why he adjusted the alt a little there..
@@AshleyPomeroy As you pass through the wind gradient, you lower the nose (quickly trading altitude for airspeed), apply throttle and then re-stabilize the approach. I've never done the throttle part (damn glider pilots :p), but I've pounded through horrendous wind gradient many times (just part of flying in Chinook country). The sudden drop means the pilot is on the ball, keeping his airspeed where it needs to be. This is a very nice approach and landing in difficult conditions.
Feel sorry for eveybody on that Ryanair plane.
+AndyJay15 hahahaha
Fake Channel! The landing was fucking hard as fuck probably 1500fpm there
Tell that to the pilots who had to land the thing. When it's windshear you barely have any useful control of the aircraft, so if you manage to put it down without destroying the landing gear as a result, you're already a hero.
Just another day for ryanair passengers, you get used to it :D
That's just a normal Ryanair landing.
The last aircraft, high wing, the pilot made an excellent landing, straightening it out just before touch down.
Dash 8’s are always getting shaken around in the wind. Comes with such a high aspect ratio!
That wasn't windshear, that was just Ryanair.
Should be their catch phrase
Was gonna say it too. Normal landing for Ryanair 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Oooooooooh !! SNAP !!
I don't... They chose Ryanair 😂
1:03 the first officers head was jumping around xD I think he was making fun of the cpt. Great landing anyways!
MR FW190 lollllll wtf
Approaching the runway at Luton airport a few years ago, our aircraft, an Easyjet Airbus A320, experienced SIDEWAYS wind shear. It was a crosswind landing, always tricky in any case, but at an altitude of 50 feet, the wind speed suddenly changed. Since the pilot was holding the aircraft level against the wind using ailerons AND rudder, as the wind speed changed suddenly, one wing of the aircraft dropped violently. Being so close the the ground this was particularly frightening. The pilot handled it well.
He came over the PA, explained the event, and apologised for the "exciting" landing.
Had a similar situation a year ago, thought it wasnt windshear, but there was a big sudden change in wind speed on Landing one wing went very close to the ground while in the air trying to land, i saw that through the window while sitting on the right side of the plane looking to the right, i was a little frightened as i didnt expect it to happen so quick
dash 8 pilot nailed it
Lawrence Bell ikr
Dash Gr8
Kudos to all the amazing pilots who can do this! Always pray you got one of these dudes piloting your plane! If not? Good luck!
Well thank you for explaining wind shear to us non-pilot types. But even I can see those landings involved great skill and the pilots must have had some white knuckles and pucker power performing them.
It's amazing how these pilots can maneuver through such difficult situations. I've been in one where the plane came within seconds of crashing during the landing. The pilot floored it and took back off. Everyone starting clapping and thanking him as we departed. These are truly heroic men!
Cool
Shit, you can see my RUclips comments?
@@AlexHoffmannAdeotitus yup
Ouch, that Ryanair at 0:38 ... what a bump, Fantastic video as always flugsnug
Chris Weaving, just a normal day flying Ryanair.
Awesome footage, that Citation was incredible ! Brilliant pilots everywhere !
Amazing touch from the Dash ! must be very scary to be passenger on these planes with such a wind. I remember a very impressive landing when i ve been in Toronto on 747, but probably less scary than those
The Ryanair one was really hard!!! Great video mate, nicely done!
Emirates: omg perfect! A smooth landing!
Ryanair: nice windshear
Yeah, to the pilot flying the Dash 8. Literally perfect. Nice
That Ryanair one was really hard! Great video man, nice job :D
This is the most beautiful aviation video I have ever seen. I'm totally transfixed.
Despite Ryanair's rough landings you can see how skilled the pilots are when landing in these conditions.
Those pilots are incredible.
Last landing was textbook. Great job!
The other ones, well, you know, RyanAir…
Awesome that your footage was used in Air Crash Investigation!
Ooooh that dash 8 landing was very niceeee
WOW!!!
The first 2 landings were VERY scary.
the last one was 100% perfect techinical execution!
every body on the ryan 737 probably spilled their drinks
Shat their pants
Henry Thomas since when did they serve drinks on Ryanair flights? XD
Everyone probably got scoliosis
0:49 That plane looked like it was landing vertically.
It was.
@@oxygen0069 Ryanair
@@PPGames6000 that explains alot actually
We're missing perspective for its horizontal movement, I guess.
"Negative" windshear? First headwind, then tailwind is the most common, and also the most dangerous kind. Ground wind shear is often caused by microbursts, localized downdrafts that spread out when hitting the ground, which means you always get head wind, and then tailwind. If you get tailwind first, and then headwind, lift increases and you float longer, which, if you go around early enough, isn't really dangerous.
Very cool, I'm into weather, but I just stumble upon this.
Man your videos are sick!!!!!!
Wazif Zia I tried tagging you using Google Mobile but failed, now on laptop and I can tag. Enjoy his account and watch each and every single video!!
so cool to watch! fantastic pilots!
the dash 8 pilot did a great job there. must be a pain in the ass to fly such a lightweight through crosswinds and windshears
Brilliant. Great footage.
Ryanair Plane
Computer: “Beeep, Beeep, Go around! Windshear!”
Captain: (reads sticker on dash saying “Go-arounds are expensive”) - “Fuck this shit”
Uhhhh Thant makes no sense there is no beep beep go around warning and also your not funny
Wow amazing video man!! subbed, those are some hard landings.. great video and a big like!
Amazing catch! Beautiful!!
Great Video!
0:31 just an average Ryanair landing
PIC: Poop pants!
SIC: Pants pooped!
Cabin: SickSacks deployed and filled!
I understand wind shear now!
The pilot in the second clip caught her really well
Amazing! respect!
Big RESPECT
Wow, another spectacular video! Great to watch, not sure how the passengers feel.
I know ryanair gets a lot of hate, but windshear landings are extremely hard and dangerous, so props to that dude even though it was a hard landing
That's some damn good piloting skills. Especially on plane#2..
Oof for the Ryanair one.
And that dash I pilot did a great job!
last 2 pilots better have got some applause
Very nice video 👍🔥👍
¡¡ Esos pilotos son unas chuchas cuereras pa aterrizar un avión , que bárbaros!!! Congratulations that pilots for that super dificult landing.
It’s a must one has to land as long as you are in the air. Tough pilots.
Microburst: "Hey looks like you're tryna get on the ground asap LEMME HELP YOU WITH THAT"
omg your videos are seriously fantastic!
Some of these look like windshear, others seem to be crosswinds and others are both. The general rule of thumb is that windshear is *vertical* wind and crosswind is *lateral* wind. Crosswind is only considered windshear aswell if the change of wind speed is bigger than 15 knots.
Ryanair loves windshears. At least they can blame it on the wind.
Great video !!! You have earn your self a subcriber
Where is this spotting location?:) Great video.
Public footpath off Catherine de Barnes Lane, next to Bickenhill village.
What's the best way to get there? Is it possible to walk there from the terminal? Or is a car the only option? Thankyou.
Mraviationguy
Type 52.436660, -1.728304 into Google Maps - it's about a mile from the terminal. There's no proper parking area though the path by the roadside is pretty wide.
Thankyou:) How do you personally get there? Just walk?
Mraviationguy
I live close, so any method will do.
i have a question, sorry i don't really know much about planes, but if the negative windshear is affecting the landing and reduces lift to the plane, then why won't the ATC make the planes land on the other side of the runway?
It's a sudden and unpredictable thing, so nothing really ATC can do.
ok, thanks for explaining :)
because a plane have to land with headwind (less ground speed and more lift -> more security) a windshear appears and disappears, nobody knows where and when
Dash 8 actually had some balls.
how did he land with that little runway? at around 0:45
Bcause it's ryanair
Ryan air slammin it down yet again lol
pretty dank piloting
1:00 was a nice save
0:51 This was filmed in a such a way that it actually looks like they're hovering the plane down.
superb video..
Awesome!
So is negative windshear exactly the same as windshear, or is it a specific type of windshear?
It's a specific type of windshear. Positive windshear increases the headwind, and it can be in other directions too.
What is windshear, and why pilots cant land during this warning, or they can? Plz tel me
That twin engine at 0.54 looks like it's in vtol hahaha
Birmingham Airport
Agree dash pilot excelent job!
My veterbrae snapped in half watching that ryanair landing
0:12 I know the pilot had to change pants after that
I don't care who you are or how many hours flying, wind shear is some scary shit.
the Citation and the de Havilland Canada Dash 8 pilot/s must have the (figurative) balls of steel.. whoever s/he may be!
Ryanair is going to land no matter what
Casual Ryanair landing
People who make dimwitted comments about the automation of modern commercial aircraft and compare pilots to overpaid bus drivers should watch these videos. And for the record I’m not a pilot, just a very grateful frequent flier.
A dumb question.... Why not land using 'the other side' of the runway, then it'll be positive windshear....
Dash driver seemed to be the only one attempting any kind of rudder control.
The amount of wind shear for the Ryanair landing tho
You just knew the hardest would be Ryanair.
@@EdekaKuchen Hey folks, looks like we found a Ryanair pilot!
@@EdekaKuchen Then save your whining for somebody else. Ryanair has a reputation for good reason. You plastered the same damn message all over the message board. So it must have been someone else you pissed off this morning. Have a wonderful day, Karen.
Does this happen in stages or all-at-once...?? For example, if a pilot did not know a windshear threat was there, they might first think they were in a headwind and decrease the engine's power to slow air speed, then hit a neutral pocket that causes faster loss of speed and altitude than desired (and in some cases can reduce speed below the stall speed), and finally they would hit a tailwind where there may not be enough lift or altitude needed to abort landing?
In regards to many of the landings of larger jets where one rear wheel touches the ground before the other, is this because one side of the plane is within an area of the windshear where the effects are more pronounced?
The dash looks like a dragonfly or something coming in to land. Difficult conditions there.
Hey guys, what happens when an aircraft lands too hard? I've watched a lot of these videos, I assume the pilot reports that he/she had a hard landing and the aircraft landing gear and tyres are submitted to an inspection? Can anyone tell me what they actually do? Thanks
The Wind in Chicago is much like this.
Ryanair lands like this without windshear too. Probably this was just a normal landing actually ;D You can see the pilots wobbling around really well at the 2nd landing ;D
This doesn't look like windshear it looks like crosswind
Ryanair: what windshear?
That's just how Ryanair operates. They treat their planes like toys and their passengers and crew like dolls.
What makes BHX so prone to adverse weather?
Okay that second clip was not WINDSHEAR that was just Ryan Air lol…
Ryanair has done an excellent landing.
Ryanair never goes around
thats one curvy ass runway
Not surprised that there were a few Ryanair planes in there
I’m in aviation for about 18 years and I wonder WTF is “negative” windshear...???
0:40 that’s a normal Ryanair landing
That camera must be super far away. You can't even hear the engines
1:05 you can see the heads of the pilots flying about
Ryanair, why did you land so hard?
Because that is the only way Ryanair lands
SPB2727
Lol
Soft landings cost extra!
Its ryanair.
lol jed
