  • The King's Gambit: Triangle Choke? Pass the Guard! In this seminar I will show how you not only can survive the Triangle Choke, but actually enter on purpose and pass your opponent's guard from there.
    This class was filmed at the BJJ Globetrotters Zen Camp 2020.
    Sacrificing a piece in chess is known as a gambit. The idea of a gambit is to sacrifice a piece in order to gain structural or positional advantage over your opponent.
    I always had a good triangle choke defense.
    One of my favorite tactics in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is baiting the triangle, wear my opponent down and then slowly pass.
    Even if the pass itself would fail, I can still wear my opponent down and use it as a triangle choke escape. This triangle choke pass is mechanically the same as the basic double under pass.
    When my opponent goes for the triangle, he gains POSITIONAL advantage. But I gain STRUCTURAL advantage.
    My opponent's spine and neck are completely bend (broken posture) while my spine and neck stay straight (strong posture).
    It's very hard (and unhealthy for your spine) to generate strenght with a broken posture (compare it to squatting with a bend spine).
    Although my opponent has the triangle, he is unable to generate strenght cause of his posture and thus unable to finish the choke.
    Meanwhile, I keep my weight forward and structure intact. I force my opponent to carry my weight, slowly grinding, breaking his structure even more. The more he resists, the more tired he gets. Until he has to concede the pass or turtle and expose his back (the truck).
    I started a BJJ blog recently. It already has a good number of articles out.

    Being squashed for 40 minutes was worthy because after this class we finally managed to apply successfully the King's gambit in sparring, both with jiu-jitsu and MMA :D

    Great video. I just watched the whole thing. This is almost exactly what I’ve been doing since white belt to pass the guards of much better people I’d otherwise never be able to pass.
    I passed good purples, browns and even blacks this way as a 9 month white belt-or at least made them turtle and get out of their closed guard.
    The only thing that would catch me up 20% of the time was getting armbarred (I see what I was doing wrong now, thanks), or if they are so good at shoulder walking that we keep resetting to the start of the position.
    But this really works, and makes me love getting triangles whenever I know it’s coming. Just like you show, if they do the “right” things and try to cut the conventional angle, it just makes it worse on them.
    The only problem now is getting people in my gym to actually take the bait at this point :-)

      😄😄 I have the same problem! Nobody goes for triangle anymore 😊
      Do you feel the difference when you make the adjustement with the arm?

    Hey Wim, just on the off chance you read this, thank you! I have been training BJJ since 2004 and have been a black belt since 2016 and of course have been triangled hundreds upon hundreds of times. I watched this video a couple of days ago and decided to try it out at open mat today. Long story short, I baited triangles on people all the way up to brown belt who I know have good triangles, and was easily able to defend, stack and pass using these methods. Great stuff!

      I try to read everything and always reply 😊
      Thanks a lot for feedback! Much appreciated.
      There are a lot of fundamental flaws in the way most people do triangles. That is why this gambit works so well.
      The cool thing is, once you start exploiting this pass, your training partners will have to upgrade their triangles.

      I've totally found that to be true. I get one roll with people when I hit this and they won't attempt a triangle again.
      I do have trouble with loop chokes from some people when they know it's a trap. Any suggestions?

    Worked immediately In today's sparring.
    I have been doing similar pass for years but seems that here are many details that can improve the success rate with guys with really good triangles.

      Hey Jonathan! Triangle is not that easy indeed. You have to treath it like any other guard.
      But it isn't that advanced really. I can teach it to everyone, including weightbelts 😊

    Managed to pull this off for the first time in sparring today! My partner thought he had the triangle, and our coach was shouting at him to finish it. I was chilling while he furiously was trying to finish the triangle. I took my time and eventually passed 😊

      @@WimDeputterBJJ extremely good. i was drilling it today for an hour with a triangle friend and i start to feel to be in an advantageous instead of in danger. i need to take the arm out though for the last stack pass. i can only stall with one arm.

    Is it sad that i don't stack my rolling partners. It just feels like a lot of stress on the neck and spine and I dont want to inflict injury to them.

      This being said, there is definately a safe and nice way to do it without injuring training partners.

    One question I have is where your posture should be ideally, because you start with a neutral spine with your head on his chest but as he enters the triangle you seem to be at more of a 45 degree angle? So are they both right or is one preferable? Probably 80% of the time I get subbed, it is by triangle, and there does not seem to be a lot of good information on triangle defense out there. It would be awesome if you made an instructional on this topic. I would definitely purchase a copy!

    • @WimDeputterBJJ
      @WimDeputterBJJ  3 года назад +3

      It is all about timing. Ideally, the one who leaves the centre (makes the angle) first, is on the losing side.
      Believe it or not, the person on top has a very big advantage over the guy on bottom.
      Top can give continues pressure. This makes it hard for the bottom player to stay in the center.
      The moment bottom choses the angle away from the trapped arm first, he is in big trouble.

      @WimDeputterBJJ  3 года назад +2

      Check out this class on pressure passing, the concepts are exactly the same. It will help you understand the triangle better.

    Where and what age did u learn your wrestling

    • @WimDeputterBJJ
      @WimDeputterBJJ  3 года назад +2

      The first time was when I was 21 I think.
      I am by no means an amazing wrestler. But I got good basics.
      The first time I learned pure wrestling from a wrestler, is about 18 years ago. I had a year of private classes.
      I was always fortunate to have some Chechens as trainingpartner with a great wrestling background. The two most important are Arbi Muradov and Visrail Khamiev.
