  • This is an excellent excerpt from a recent seminar with Roger Gracie in Las Vegas. Here is goes over proper distribution of weight and discusses details about how he likes to hold the side control position to attack.. Later in the seminar and not on video he showed how he likes to transition to mount for controlling and transitioning to a submission. Enjoy.

    Roger is a genius. His jiu-jitsu is on another level to anyone else's. It's more Japanese in its approach and methodicalness. Reminds me alot of Aiki-Jiu jistu/Aikido ❤

      @markdaniels4178 Год назад

      Exactly! You're absolutely correct, his jujitsu is just basic and judo in origin without all the nonsense. Roger gracie jiu-jitsu is all mastered basic judo and nothing more

      What people don't realize is,that, he studied judo in the United Kingdom at the second largest judo institution in the world under Neil Adams

    Anyone know how he would block the elbow escape at around the 4:00 minute mark?

    • @af4396
      @af4396 Год назад +2

      Probably because Roger's elbow is tucked into his body, so that all the weight he's putting onto that guys hip is going onto him and not the mats. He's got a wide base and has knees off the ground, meaning his leaning/pushing into the guy, not just covering him. With that much weight on the hip, I doubt it's easy to turn into him, or even get your hips shrimping or moving.
      That's just my guess. Standard "head and arm" side control is focused on pinning the peck/head/shoulder and trapped arm. Weight though, is back to prevent from rolling. Hips are free. That is what allows you to get on your side and start elbow escaping.
      That doesn't seem to be an option here.

      I just went to his seminar last weekend. He showed this exact control. It was difficult to elbow scape because his hips were so high, like up to your stomach, that he followed you effortlessly. Right hand under, left hand on top but just focusing on laying heavy on top was the key. If you managed to grab a leg, it was easy just to push and take it off.

      His distribution of weight was about 2 inches further up and across the body than I have seen anyone else show. He also would show grabbing shallow on the collar and flaring the elbow on the near side to stop them from turn on their side. 👊🙏🥋

    I'll try but I don't know if these same mechanics works for smaller guys... Roger is a big fella, so there are some things that just big fellas can do.

    • @af4396
      @af4396 Год назад +2

      As a smaller guy I had the same thought, but at the same time, more standard "tight' side controls actually attach you more to the big strong guy, so I do believe this "wet blanket" side control might actually work better for us. Haven't tried it yet, but will definitely try in my class tonight. It's almost like a Kezure Kesa Gatame but with the legs facing the other way, and sprawled more.

      I'm a smaller guy as well. I started training at Xande Ribeiro's gym about 18 months ago, and he has a similar side control that I've begun using with good results.

      It is very similar to kuzure! Main note for me is his version was further across and higher up the body. Also when he was showing transition to mount and was lower on hips, the use of ball of his foot/inverting his heel immobilized the hips. He came over and worked this detail with our group during the sem. 👊
