Finishing the Triangle (vs most common counters)

  • This video I go over the details to a tight triangle finish as well as some of the most common mistakes I see people make when trying to apply the triangle. Having a strong finish is very important not only because it actually finishes the match but psychologically I find when you trust your finishes you are more likely to be very aggressive going for them. I cover countering vs the stack counter, the leg pull to side counter, and the arm behind back counter. Hope you like the video, please comment if you have questions. Great video, I love that you tell the camera to move to the other side. So many channels dont do that, and it's just a mystery as to whats happening over there. You consistently do that. Love the content! Thanks.

    Thanks a lot for the details on opening and closing your triangle choke to make it tight when you move back as your opponent is stacking you. I always struggle to finish the choke with heavier opponents.

    Gold, thanks. When we drill triangles I’ve been confused about trying to go straight into a tight triangle versus the way you showed. I prefer your way. Those defenses are gold.

    Awesome stuff as usual! In the future I'd really like to see some longer videos (15-30 min for instance) of you actually specific training some of the positions you've given good overviews of already, e.g. side control bottom, spider guard bottom, DLR passing. Just getting to watch some high level application of the instruction videos would be really excellent in my opinion.

      For sure I really want to do this more my shoulder has been busted pretty bad last few months, side escapes would probably be the hardest thing on the injury I can definitely put up some more passing and guard play specific training videos. Thanks Tony hope all is good for you

    What about the fist next to the head and spin around the head defense? Or the foot in the arm pit (or if flexible around the waist)?

    We just did this situational roll from triangle position. I vaguely remember the anti-stack here but can't seem to make it work for people who are quite heavier than me. How do you make te hips heavy? Same motion as a bridge?

  • @ilxyaeger
    @ilxyaeger 5 лет назад +1

    Soo what do you do if the the guy defending does the Keenan defence? Its basically where he post his hand on the nearcollar and make a grip, and sit out on his but arching his head back(so you cant grab head) then he gets on his knees and spins out with knee on belly? Have you seen it JonThomasBJJ?

    I’m good about getting into the diamond position but once I’m there and trying to move into the triangle to finish, my training partners have been quickly taking both hands and forcing the leg that is over their shoulder to go over their head. This leaves me very few options and many times my guard gets passed as a result. Any suggestions to counter this? Maybe I’m not moving to control the head quickly enough or squeezing my knees together to get a tighter position once I get my leg over the shoulder?

    Have you seen the Hontai triangle finish when opponent does the arm-wrap-around defense? Thoughts on that one?
    And ...for people with short legs, should they just use triangles to set up other subs or can they be equally successful finish rate wise?

    Any thoughts on when to throw up a triangle against really strong and or heavier opponents. I am able to hit it early on against a lot of guys but they tend to have so much energy and strength since it is in the beginning of the roll and my percentage of finishing it is low (now you’ve given me good ideas raise that percentage). My professor said not good idea to use triangles against bigger stronger guys unless they are tired or they will stack you etc. Would you agree with this? It kind of bummed me out because I want my triangle to get to the level where I can finish on anyone regardless of size and strength. Hope you have some thoughts on that.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  5 лет назад

      theticoboy 4 things will decide who you can Triangle: their size, your length, your flexibility, and your technique. You gotta develop a comfort level and knowledge of who you think you can finish for me usually around 230 240 I stop trying then and go more for omoplatas if the guy is skilled.

    Video request. I'm trying to up my triangle game and my training partners keeps pushing my knee that is closest to the ear, in a triangle choke position, around their head to escape and then across my body and smashing me. Any recommendations are counters to that?

    Hi Jon,
    What you are doing is so good that I feel bad about this criticism. I am grateful for all your videos and you do provide this for free so I am ever so grateful for these. But could you please have a blue/white and a black Gi. Contrasting Gis will make it so much easier to see what you are doing. Black or Black or white on white is not easy to see. Just a suggestion.
