Buying a used 2021 GMC 2500 Denali diesel Saturday with 40,199 miles, my first GM product with a diesel motor in it, I’ve had a ford with a 6.7 diesel logged in 170, 000 plus, a 2000 Ram with over 300k, and now my first GM diesel
I watch your videos and respect your opinion, very well explained

Outside of a warranty replacement of the injectors and two small transmission repairs one water pump and 2 idler pulley replacement . I haven’t done a thing . 320k

Yea GM really did well with the gmt800 and it's only being revealed now that these trucks miraculously outlast Toyotas while offering themselves as a potent tool for damn near any professional. And they simultaneously make crisp, artwork-like pavement princesses for the folks that enjoy building show trucks. It's a class act from GM at a special time in history for diesels.

@@Alexbuilt *than Toyota. Yea I've driven plenty Toyotas. The GMT800 Duramax trucks are at least as reliable as a Toyota. But Toyota doesn't make a truck that can pull 25,000 pounds. Difficult comparison. My 05 Prius is my everyday driver. Had an 02 Silverado 2500hd Duramax but I had to sell it. I'll definitely get another one as soon as I can justify it and if I have the cash. As for Toyota trucks, I have no need for a truck like that. They just can't do much. A brand new loaded Tundra barely tows as much as my abandoned 97 Ford work van with a v6. I'd rather have a car from Toyota.

I own and operate a hot shot trucking company I've tried the ram cumapart cummins and the Ford rebuilt international power stroke as for money spent in repair costs and to keep the trucks running making money you can't beat the dirtymax duramax Allison combo my trucks get traded out at 400,000 miles plus they pull trailers there whole life. As for cost per mile to operate costs less per mile to operate then the cummins or powerstroke. When you use these trucks to operate a business you keep up with cost of truck and the cost per mile to operate that said truck.

I like this deep dive format way better than TFL etc, even though those can be somewhat useful too. Very well done review. You may be interested to know that for 2024 GM has reworked the duramax to put out 25% more power at low rpms. I like the cummins too, but its about time somebody said "enough" to the peak torque games and focused on real world, usable towing power and fuel efficiency. I'm not pulling 25k+ pounds. I'm pulling a heavy-ish RV or whatever, and want great towing power and fuel efficiency.

Thank you! I mean I love the TFL boys they do a great job and in their defense they aren't mechanics so this stuff comes a little easier to me. I have heard GM is cooking up something for 2024! it will be interesting where they get the power from. it's only a matter of time before Duramax, power stroke and Cummins all offer over 1,000 lb-ft of torque which is a little crazy because like you said it's all about the driving experience at the end of the day.

From what I understand Ram is upping their encryption on their ECM's now. So deleting might not be less expensive anymore.
I have owned 3 different Cummins... 04.5, 07.5, and a 15. I liked my 15 other than those 3.42 gears. They were awful towing. A shift towing my camper up a hill and you would swear the transmission and driveshaft would be left there. I ended switching to a '18 L5P. I am still loving this truck. It tows my camper so much better. In fact I now tow tandem with a SxS behind our tow hauler camper. There is no way I would have done that in my '15 Ram. Maybe my older Ram's since they had 3.73's, but the brakes probably wouldn't be happy. Biggest thing with the Duramax vs the Cummins is acceleration especially towing. It was down right scary trying to pass on a 2 lane road. The L5P just gets up and goes. I have been known to never own a vehicle for very long... 3 years max. I am almost on year 5 with this truck and have 0 plans to switch out.

YOU my Duramax friend are showing me things I can do as an OWNER. To clean this carbon build up. I'm having FUN watching your video. Man did not know the carbine build up on a simple OWNER fix. Just like the WATER drain on the intake of GMs separator system. OWNERS need to take off the CAP every time they check OIL. That intake is such a great design. It's up to us as owners to remove that cap(water drain) To let water Run freely.

Glad they seem to have gotten it right on the next generation. I think one of the strongest points for me on the GM diesel is the Allison Transmission, seems completely bulletproof with stock power. It shifts great 170k miles in. As a combo they work great together. Not sure about the upgrade to the 10 speed, but have not heard of a lot of problems.

You make a good point about the Allison. Dodge fans can't shut up about the Cummins engine quality, and I agree it is a legendary engine. But the entire package around the engine is trash. Duramax/Allison on a gmt800 is like almost too good to be true. And the LB7 ousted the 5.9 Cummins far as I'm concerned because the fueling system on the duramax is a common rail, direct injection system. That's equivalent to saying the Duramax uses fuel injection, while the 5.9 Cummins uses a carburetor. There is no real comparison. Fuel injection tech blasted carburetors out the water and continues developing today (have a look at the 3.0 liter dmax). The Duramax common rail has gone largely unchanged since its inception over 22 years ago, and Cummins and Ford eventually adopted common rail too. They knew if we can't beat em we better join em 😂 🛻💨

FORD did NOT start doing that till 2023. I have ALWAYS owned FORD Pickup's. But this 20 year trade, looked hard at Cummins, it was the Miles on NEW used Dodges. On my Ford's always a GASSER engine. The 2000 had the V-10. Rented a 5 Yard Dump and went up a hill with that V-10 in F-600
So,so SLOW. I completely understand why FORD did this big Gasser in Fleet trucks, it was for emissions on Propane conversation. What a huge difference pulling my 7000 pound boat, with the two different brands. One being a F-250 and the other my new baby, the 3500 Silverado

Compressor variable guide vanes have been in play on jet engines since the late 70's early 80's to this day. Why it took so damn long for someone to make a cheap ass turbo do the same thing is beyond me...jet engines use fuel pressure to adjust those variable compressor vanes, but electric works too. Why did it take so long for known technology to catch up? Gas or diesel.....doesn't make sense to me. People act like it's some new technology.....nope....been there many years in other industries...

8:45 I too, began thinking Duramax was number 3 of the big 3 trucks, in last place. Then I owned an 02 Duramax lb7 4x4 for a while pulling goosenecks. After educating myself A LOT, now I KNOW Duramax is and always has been #1. This isn't so much my opinion as it is objectively verifiable fact. Ignorance can become temporary when we get off our asses and research for ourselves. Thanks for hitting on a lot of good points in the vid. Let's remember though, 2001-2007 these Duramax trucks had little to no emissions, certainly no def crap. They had cp3's stock. Other than a few hiccups and one recall out the gate for lb7 Bosch injectors, these era Duramax vehicles are still out there hauling heavy and exceeding 300-400k miles with regular maintenance. They're resale values are very high as the Duramax runs just as strong at 20 years old as it did off the factory floor, stock. The whole truck, not just the engine. The aftermarket for Duramax is plentiful and can unlock massive power cheaply and safely. Cummins are great, but the dodge truck around it is like encasing a gold bar in toilet paper 🚽. The power stroke struck lucky with the Navi 7.3 in early 2000's but then they switched to straight trashcan juice until what, 2012? Ford is still getting slammed with lawsuits from that decade of fail. Ford internal emails show managerial coverups as they knew they were building dangerous trash, but sold it to the public anyway. Finally Ford has a decent engine with the 6.7, but they're still impossible to work on and the cp4 plagues them still today. Watching a $120k vehicle turn into roadkill because of its factory fuel pump YEARS after knowing it's been a problem.... screw Ford. RAM has had so many corporate changes since 2008, I don't know if the trucks are made in India, Britain, Bangladesh, or Mexico. And if you tell me they're made in USA, I got a bridge to sell you. Breakdown kits are real. You have to get the Aisin (Japanese) trans if you want the truck to last more than 10 years. The newer rams might actually be decent, but the costs are overwhelming and the tech isn't that great. Solid front axles on Ford and RAM are pointless and ruin the ride. All 3 trucks in modern day have excellent, reliable engines (if you swap the Ford fuel pump), but only after they've copied what worked on the Duramax since day 1. The L5P is a monster, tested thoroughly by Banks and put into use by our military. For cheapos like myself, I'm confident I can build and unlock an earlier Duramax into a timeless truck that'll work for me for decades still. For the ppl who don't mind spending money on a new truck, an L5P with some mods to the interior is the best bang out there. You can get the banks unit that makes your exhaust brake better, or install a real exh brake if the stock exh brake isn't enough for you. With modern HD wheels and tires capable of 4000+ pounds per rear tire, you hardly even need a dually anymore. When a $10k 02 Duramax with mods can give a $100k+ new Ford or Ram truck a run for its money, that's saying a lot for the engineers at Chevy. I'd drive the Ford 7.3 from 99-2003 modded up before I spent a dollar towards a 6.7. And the only way you're getting me in a Ram is if it's a gift or I'm a corpse.

I hear ya there on the research part. I bout my 1st diesel in early 2018 and pretty much everything was an option from 94 on as long as it was within my $35k budget as a 19 year old. At the time I want the best thing I could get for my money. I did like a year and a half or more of just researching and going through the forums everyday for all of the big 3. I end up buying a 04 LB7 with 112K miles on it for $21k after being convinced by my mom of all people cause I was avoiding LB7s like the plague cause everyone except LB7 guys were going on about their issues. In the end it checked all my boxes of what I wanted and in a couple months I'll be at 5 years of ownership and couldn't be happier with it that truck will never leave my possession no matter what 3lse is bought at any point.

@@bhswarrior94 you did great. Anyone selling their 04 Duramax for $20k knows they kept the truck clean and stock like a time capsule and the price is worth it. The only better purchase would be to use a time machine and get that 04 truck new off the lot. I'm envious. Once I save up enough cash, I'm going down the same road you did. These 01-07 gm trucks are excellent tools that are versatile for full-time work, side hustles, helping family and friends, and they're still efficient (20mpg) and comfortable enough to be your everyday driver (diesel costs notwithstanding). I bought my 02 LB7 strictly to haul dumpsters and cars for a business I started. But after using the truck for a couple weeks I became addicted and started using the truck for everyday driving. I sold the business and assets, and sold the truck too and I've been kicking myself in the ass ever since! I miss that truck. And, it wasn't even in great condition. Previous owner beat on it too. Had dents, scratches, paint issues, but no rust underneath, and no blowby from the oil cap. It was solid where it really mattered. Once I get my cash back up, I'm looking at pretty much any Duramax from 01-07 classic that's been babied. No doubt it'll be around $15-20k like yours, but that's money well spent. Not to mention these trucks look cool, sound cool, and the interiors are the best of the 3 from that era. Im a fan of that dashboard setup, the rear seat setup, and the features for the upper level trims rival what u can buy today. I'm not interested in ANY car manufacturer's navigation, infotainment bullshit, because I know I'm gonna customize that shit and add a decent sound system with a big screen anyway. I don't need hd radio, wifi, or any other crap that my phone or a tablet can already do much better. If I want backup cams, dash cams, and bed cams i can add better ones myself. For severe duty, you take the 3/4 ton truck, beef up the engine a little, EFI tune it, then add road-active springs to the rear leafs, add airbag system with an onboard compressor capable of filling the bags AND offering shop air on demand. Get hd rims and tires for the back 2 wheels, so 4000 lbs capacity per rear wheel on the stock 10,000 lbs rear axle. Add a 30k lbs gooseneck hitch and you can hotshot damn near anything up to 30k lbs just like the $80,000 new trucks can do. No def, no cats, no EGR, even reroute the pccv down a hose to the back of the truck into a hidden catch can or filtered exhaust so even that system isn't allowed to send oil or pollution back into the intake. Versatility beyond its years, grandfathered emissions, easy to use EFI sotf system. Yea I love talking about these fuckers and I miss mine badly. The LB7 is the OG. So what if the injectors go under a cover? You're not going in there often. It uses wastegate instead of variable pitch turbo... Who cares? That wastegate tech has worked great for decades, and the LB7 stock turbo is matched well for acceleration and towing. I see most expensive projects going LB7, you know the ones that people try racing with. The LB7 is a good candidate for building a race truck, a tractor pull truck, or even making into a big boy tow rig like I mentioned. The LLY has its strengths and takes kindly to bolt-on goodies, but you get a turbo that's a different animal than before and the EGR has to be pulled asap. The LBZ is everyone's favorite since it has the engineering advances over its predecessors, yet it is right before gm hit a wall with adding def and other annoying components to make the tree huggers more happy. I challenge you as I challenge myself: make that truck last your whole life. The concept of a truck is to be a timeless tool. Keeping it clean, keeping it maintained, and not letting anyone else drive it... If u live in a rust-free area, that truck should last forever.

I recently just bought a 2019 Duramax. Beautiful dream truck. 200k miles w/ 1 owner, the past 3 months I've had it have been great. Any recommendations on what to expect/look out for? Any thoughts would be much appreciated as it's my first diesel. (It's not deleted sadly)

I am looking at purchasing a truck and where I'm at is between a 2012 mega cab dually 6.7 with 68rfe, or a 2022 sierra sle duramax. They both only have 16 km and even though the duramax is about 8k more the lower interest rate on the newer truck kind of washes some of that cost out and the newer one has some warranty. What would you recommend?

The term "under-square" is used to describe the bore:stroke ratio of any engine 9:59 configuration

I'm trying to understand the tuning part... do you mean about $5K to "de-emission" the truck and tune it to run, or $5K to bypass the computer to allow a chip and more tuning? My only experience with a diesel truck was a 2004 Dodge with the 325/600 Cummins pre-emissions. A very good vehicle then for towing a 5th wheel toy hauler, and now I'm shopping/considering options for a new rig setup. Thank you, and Merry Christmas! Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL
