  • If you have an in flight fire, you need to be able to put it out.
Certainly an emergency descent is important but let's get the fire out first.
The H3R Halon Fire Extinguisher works incredibly fast. In this video, I test multiple fire extinguishers against multiple fires. The H3R is the winner hands down.

Decades ago I was hired to fly about 700lbs of dynamite from a remote airport to a construction site on an island. I was alone in a Cessna 207 with all the seats removed. After loading the dynamite in the airplane I signed the paperwork, hopped in the pilot's seat and grabbed the lever to release the seat lock to slide my seat up. Immediately after my seat began to move I heard a pop followed by a BANG and the entire contents of the Cessna turned white. I don't remember what happened in the immediate moment that followed-honestly that memory is completely blank. But the next thing I remember was realizing that I was about 20 feet away from the Cessna, running as fast as I could move and feeling my heart pounding so hard that it felt like it was about to come out of my chest. When I stopped and turned around to look at the Cessna what I saw was surreal. In contrast to my panic was a totally peaceful early morning at a quiet airport with the only "action" being my lone Cessna 207, the cockpit door gently swinging on its hinges and a cloud of white mist drifting out of the open door. The gentleman who had driven the dynamite to the airport was doubled over laughing at me and my antics. He said something like "Boy, if that Dynamite explodes just put your fingers in your ears". As if I was going to outrun an explosion after being crammed in a Cessna 207 with 700lbs of packaged dynamite. Here is what happened, while loading the packaged dynamite I had inadvertently jostled the emergency fire extinguisher that was mounted under my seat. The safety pin had been moved and when I grabbed the seat to slide it forward the fire extinguisher handle had been jammed into the discharge position (pop) and the BANG was the sound of the extinguishing agent being unexpectedly released. That was my one and only time flying dynamite. I did have another "ADVENTURE" the first time I was hired by a family to fly over a local prominent mountain to spread the cremated ashes of their beloved and recently diseased father ---not my proudest moment .................. but that's a story for a different time... I'm outta here with my head hung in shame.........

Once I stopped laughing and I was able to see again... I was really impressed with (1) the amazing clear IFR watch thing, (2) the air horn, and (3) the Halon fire extinguisher, not necessarily in that order, even though I numbered them. The cheese based fire extinguisher / cracker enhancement would've made it to (4) but I only listed (3). The "nuggets of flame" that kept appearing in odd places were uh... well placed. I rent so I have not experience the flaming money problem. Oh wait... yeah... ok so renting isn't free, ever.
Everybody knows there's no way any pilot would ever strap a fire extinguishers to their leg. That would be like jumping out of an airplane wearing a parachute after you killed the engine over rough terrain and then guiding your parachute to the crash site to retrieve the cameras. It would never happen. The video would never make it to YT. 😶

I think that air horns like that might be filled with propane. Despite what everyone thinks, propane doesn't actually work very well when it comes to extinguishing fires. It tends to make them a little hot under the collar.

Really like your stuff, thanks! I used to road race formula cars. I was at Westwood, in British Columbia, and had an incident just past start/finish. A brake line had failed and I ended up going off the road in a third gear corner and taking out some brush and trees Nothing I could do to make the corner and I ended off in the shrubbery; a turn worker rushed up to the car and I told him, calmly, that I was okay and the electrics were off. He panicked and pulled my fire bottle system, wasting $300 of halon fire suppression. It didn't put out any fire but certainly cost me.... Halon works.

I know a lot of the vid is tongue in cheek😆😅 but...Modern dry chemical extinguishers have never had asbestos in - just Sodium Bicarbonate (BC) or Ammonium Sulphate (ABC). The later however is not very plane friendly though as it severely affects aluminium airframes & messes up electronics! Halon (where you can still get it, it's time is nearly up for air use in the EU and the rest of the world isn't far behind as it devours ozone quicker than Pac Man eating dots in a maze!) or one of the Halon alternative clean agents like FE-36 or Halotron is definitely the best choice!

Halon is a quadruple threat: inhibits the reaction, displaces air/oxygen, it comes out super cold as it boils from liquid to vapor, and it has a superior packaging properties so it has compact size and low weight for a give amount of extinguishing. Its only actual downside is that it is damaging to the ozone, but the amount used for fires (let alone aircraft specific emergencies) is minimal compared to the literal tons of CFCs that were once used in old aerosol cans, refrigeration, and as dry-cleaning and industrial specialty solvents.
( The main benefit for refrigeration was that CFCs are nonflammable, not toxic, and compatible with seals and lubricants. Otherwise anhydrous ammonia, propane and butane are are as thermally efficient. )

A fire extinguisher that doubles as emergency food now that is the kind of dual purpose life saving extinguisher I want when I get sucked out of a plane.

As always, your videos are great. I do thank you for showing H3RAviation's products, though. While I don't have an airplane, it's a good demonstration of a great product, and based on this, I would use it if I was installing a fire extinguisher in an airplane.
I was waiting for the 'hair past a freckle' comment but the Invisible IFR Alarm mentioned elsewhere is much better.
I love the one with your daughter, making money disappear. Up in smoke!
    Thanks for making my Sunday.
Okay, totally new subject, and on a serious note. Are there upgrades for the panel planned for the Comanche, and if so, would you share them with us? While I would love to see a full blown glass panel, i.e., the Dynon Skyview HDX, that's still getting expensive. Three Garmin GI-275s should be less and would give you a lot of features. I'm curious as to IF you're planning on an upgrade and if so, to what.

We all know if Bryan (with a Y!!!) had kept his Grumman he'd not need to worry about fire extinguishers... ;)

Is there any advice about having a fire extinguisher up each pant leg? Also would it help protect my water bottle if I have to crash my plane over the mountains?
