- Oshkosh 2024 is just around the corner, and I'm gearing up for the event of the year. But there's a catch-my plane is having some engine problems! Despite upgrading the engine and avionics, I'm still facing issues that could prevent me from flying to Oshkosh. It's coming down to the wire, and if I can't fix it, I'll have to find another way to get there.
I'm really excited about the RUclipsr meet and greet and can't wait to attend @RichWellner do a presentation on backcountry flying and cooking. Plus, @pilotedgeATC is hosting their annual SimVenture again this year, so you can practice flying into Oshkosh on your flight simulator.
Will I make it to Oshkosh 2024 in my plane, or will I have to find another way? Stay tuned to find out!

I just turned you into OSHA for not wearing eye protection when operating that chainsaw. All that metal flying around could damage your camera. Sometimes I wonder if you're really smart enough to be a pilot. 😂

@@oscar_charlie The shorthand is to squawk 7567. If 2 of the 3 you can squawk 7560, 7570 or 7670 depending on the situation at hand. Same thing as referring to a Boeing 738 or 739.
I cannot wait to walk and break in a new pair of shoes at Oshkosh either! 😮. I'm always afraid to fly there in my plane as I don't want a tornado or hailstorm to kill her! Hopefully I get to meet you and if I remember my name, I'll be sure to tell it to you! Since I'm not a "patrician, potentiometer, Packard???" thing, or whatever that is, I'll buy you a diet coke to say thanks for all the laughs!

Brian, know what you mean about camping. Three years ago our Comanche had a cylinder issue and we drove to Oshkosh. Stay with some friends in their RV. A huge storm rolled in that Saturday night and all I could think of was that I'd be in it with the tent probably on top of me. Last year did the RV thing again......sooooo comfortable don't think I'll ever go back to camping with the exception of 2026 when the Comanche is highlighted. May have to fly in for that one hopefully I can find a friend with indoor accomdations.

I have thought about just downgrading to a 4th or 5th grade medical. The 5th is so tempting because no doctors involved but only allows VFR day flying.
I certainly read at 5th grade level, why shouldn't my medical!?
I plan on being at the RUclips Creator meetup. I should be easy to spot. I'll be the goofy looking guy with prescription wire frame safety glasses with side shields. Had a CRAO (Central retinal artery occlusion) earlier this year, just being proactive and protecting my one good eye while I get some vision back in the other. Also, I'll be there with my son, we'll be wearing JPS hats. Does a $5.00 month Patreon get me a Diet Coke? IF so, could I get an orange soda for my son? Have fun at Oshkosh.
That's why you have a twin Comanche and then if it's broke it's just a regular COMANCHE!

Good luck getting the front firewall to be Sound Transmission Class 50. Never going to happen without separated studs, an extra layer of drywall and maybe even some sound absorbing mat.

I hope you have a great time Brian. I went for 2 days last year and wanted to go for 5 this one. Since then, sadly, I've become disgusted with experimental aviation. That, and second niece is taking her ppl check ride next week so I've spent my Oshkosh money on her flying anyway. I can't wait for her to be done so I can get back to flying myself. Maybe next year I'll be back to normal in the head for Oshkosh! LOL

I think you're probably ready to go produce aviation movies for the big filmmakers. The gas engine sounds from the electric chainsaw are the equivalent of the piston engine sounds coming from a turboprop aircraft I've seen in a movie before.

Mines the newest model from Jeppesen. it had 8 hours of battery life and can be used to charge other devices.

Had high oil temperature after upgrading a Decathlon to 180 hp. Found the two fittings on the oil cooler had smaller passages inside. Changed them to ones with larger diameter holes and bingo, problem solved. Same hoses still fit, who knew? Also, "Jimmy's World" had high oil temp on a Beech Sierra, I think, and he found they attached one oil cooler hose to the wrong place on the accessory housing. Good luck.

Temp probe and or gauge is the issue. Hopefully you verified the probe already by putting it in a cup of oil and heating the oil up with a torch and with a second thermometer in the cup to confirm the temp. I'm sure you did tho
I put it in boiling water and it was reading a little bit high so I'm getting a new probe and temp gauge installed tomorrow

Always wonder who is going to crash and burn this year at Oshkosh ? I have a tip for you. Leave your gear down all the way to Oshkosh. The final approach to landing is stressful and you will probably forget to pull that gear lever down. Also make sure you do a brake check before landing? Dan Gryder did not. Don't know how you got a 4th class medical in your mental state?
Is it an oil overheating issue, or is it just that darned hot outside?
I think it is actually just a bad oil temp gauge. Replacing that tomorrow but not 100%

If you pack the money in too tightly it can restrict the air flow through the oil cooler.
I’m going to build a Stirling engine that will burn money directly, eliminating the middle man and fuel truck service. The efficiency should be astounding and the conversion from money to thrust will be quieter too!
