It's funny how nervous bush pilots are talking to ATC. But not half as nervous as I would be landing on the side of a mountain.

Same here, learned to fly in controlled airspace. Uncontrolled always put me on edge.

Fun!! Helicopters probably encounter this a bit more! I’ll usually just radio in without calling ahead and just tell them we’re landing off airport and where. I just give distance from airport and direction/radial (e.g. 4 nm along the 120 radial)

Stuff like this isn’t all that strange of a request. I’ve worked stuff like this countless times.
I think it’s imperative for GA pilots to routinely fly in controlled airspace and talk with ATC. I’d much rather work with a pilot that isn’t afraid of calling us. It’s really not a big deal.

I'm a low hour pilot and I'm hangared at a towered airport. Yeah, it took me a couple times flying before I was really comfortable talking to ATC, but now whenever I leave it I feel blind. Just a week ago I landed at a non-towered airport and had to abort the landing as someone was taking off directly at me while I turned base to final. He never said anything on comms despite my 5 or so radio calls as I approached and entered the pattern. Those types of things make me feel WAY more nervous outside of tower control than I do within, where someone is there watching out for you. If you get the opportunity, stop in to the tower and talk to them. I do that at my tower all the time, and it really helps you feel comfortable kmowing they are humans there to help you.

Trent, I always enjoy your videos and have taken inspiration and much enjoyment from them. I have heard you express, on many occasions, that you have been hesitant to talk to ATC. As a flight instructor, I encounter this in my students a lot. Fortunately, I have a very good relationship with the folks at our local tower facility and often take students and local pilots for a tour of those facilities. It helps a lot when pilots actually "meet" the people on the other side of the microphone. Most pilots do not realize that most controllers are NOT pilots. They are also NOT guys in black suits and dark glasses waiting to catch you at something you are not supposed to do... Usually, they are great people, many of them quite young, dressed in cutoff jeans and t-shirts working in very cool places. They are really there to help you. And, pilots also need to understand that the controllers would not have a job if "you" were not out there flying... I would highly recommend that you contact your local ATC facility and arrange a tour to see just what it is that they do for you. I believe that you would be a lot more willing to avail yourself of their services once you get to know them.

Trent, it's official, you're an GA pusher.😁 People tell you this is your world, and then you just give them a signature Trent Palmer smile and go: "No dude, this is our world. Step right in." When shared, burdon halves and joy doubles. That's the math of it. Magnificent, ain't it?

I regularly fly into a private strip inside controlled airspace. The tower is always very accommodating and easy to work with. We just report landing assured and call them on departure. We can’t always reach them on the ground departing, but we call as soon as practical if we can’t reach them, or will call them on the phone prior to departure. It’s pretty easy when you’re used to it!

I flew under the Seattle bravo. I got on frequency with Seattle center for flight following. I got nervous that I might get low on fuel while navigating the insanity of Seattle. I had 2 fuel cans on board so I told Seattle center I was landing at a reservoir on MT Rainier to fuel up. That got a little interesting to explain. If anyone is scared of ATC. Fly under a bravo and you will never be afraid of the little towered airports again.

Just my two cents as a Flight Instructor that operates within the Washington DC special flight rules area, Tower controllers don’t really care what you do as long as you stay out of the way of IFR traffic (private jets coming in on instrument approaches mostly). I think your call to approach was very clean and exactly the way that I would do it.

It’s funny , but understandable, how pilots that fly in uncontrolled space all the time are nervous to talk to ATC or tower. I learned at a non towered field but flew into and around controlled a lot. It took a while before that nervousness went away.

Did similar in Europe but in a flight of 1940's Tcraft without XPDR but with radio...never an issue, they let us do our own thing as long as we stayed underneath the 3 degree approach/departure path of the airliners. Coast running the Spanish Med past Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona. Also the same past Lisboa in Portugal and Nice on the French Riviera.😀 Edit: not landing but transit.

Man getting an instrument rating will make anyone an ace on the radio. I know it’s not that helpful for a lot of bush pilots but you don’t actually have to finish the rating. Even just getting with an instructor and doing some approaches from time to time, if the plane is equipped, is plenty. For me, radio work is fun.
