  • Ever wondered if a plane's cleanliness affects its speed? 🤔✈️ Join me and my Piper Comanche 250 on an aerial adventure as I put three contenders to the test: a spotless plane, a dirty bird, and a plane that's clean on one side and not so much on the other. 🧼🛩️💨 Watch as we compare how they soar through the skies - will the clean plane glide smoother, or does dirt add an aerodynamic edge? Or perhaps, it's the two-faced plane that takes the lead with its split personality. Buckle up for a flight of fancy filled with laughs, science (sort of), and a definitive answer to the age-old question: Which flies faster, a clean or dirty plane? 🚀🤣 Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more quirky experiments and high-flying fun!

Great video Bryan. I have one more question for you to answer. If you also clean all the heavy lead deposits off the belly, will it increase your useful load? It would have to be good for 3 or 4 more hours of fuel. I passed my PPL checkride a few days ago. I want to thank you for being inspirational during that journey. Keep up the excellent work. Safe skies my friend 🇺🇸🛩️

Pretty conclusive scientific proof there! but you missed the final test - if you give the plane a good wipe with some t-cut or similar to get all those scratches out & fully restore laminar flow, could you get it back to being supersonic, or alternatively cut your fuel burn to near zero?! also throw all those old triplicate forms out, for goodness sake, all that extra drag there too.

Going to those extremes for the sake of a bad pun was award worthy, bravo :D

Wow. Several points (1) Absolutely stellar still-frame work with the speed-o-meter. That's hard to pull off. (B) Around 6:30, I noticed your Flight Aware track is using a Canard Icon and I think there's an update for that. Did the same thing to my Cessna Quad-Pacer. Finally, last point (Unicorn) this should be considered by students the definitive video on the influence of drag. To avoid any confusion, this should be the only drag influence allowed in schools. Safety first. GREAT JOB!

Yep, I, too, was one of those airport kids who washed and waxed airplanes in exchange for flying lessons back in the early 1970s. And I can tell you unequivicably that the difference in flying a dirty airplane vs a clean and waxed one is akin to the difference in drawing a sharp knife through a bowl of creamed cheese vs through a bowl of water. However, bugs vs dirt... I'm not sure which one was worse for drag, but the wax sure improved the speed and feel of the machine.

Bonus points if you add turtlewax (MIL-WAX-420) or just rub a fine coat of oil all over the airframe. It gets into the metal grains and smooths out any imperfections. I’ve done this in my C172RG and went mach .72 (hence the 172 nomenclature).

You did the GA community a great service. I actually already knew all this though. My co-owners and I clean the bugs off our Cheetah after every flight (bylaws). I take it a step further and only fly on hot days so I can thermal up with 1/8 engine power and when I get high enough, I just fly down hill at idle so I average a -1.8 gph. When I get back to the airport, we are required (bylaws) to refuel the plane to standard fuel level but I always get to put fuel back into the pump and get some money back. That's why I don't go to the fuel pump and KXBP. KDTO pays way better!

You forgot one of the downsides to removing the parasites. I've always removed every bug gut from the center of the leading edge down towards the ground. The remaining ones on the top act like vortex generators! Unbelievable but oh so true!!! I can actually get it so slow and trimmed just a few inches over the runway then climb out and run to the restroom in the FBO and get back to climb aboard before it reaches the other end of the runway, then retrim for a climb out! All without the aircraft ever landing. They do cost me a couple knots off the top end. Thanks for explaining the amazing principles of science behind it all.
