For those who haven't seen, I have a NEW RPG tier list boasting every major RPG from 2000 to 2009! -- ruclips.net/video/jNpw39aTlGU/видео.html
i missed the old republic realy realy in my opinion good fully voiced star wars mmorpg
wait wheres fallout 3, in mo opinion the best rpg ever.
Where's Dragon Age Origins? The original Deus Ex? Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines? Also comparing Borderlands, Dark Souls and Diablo to actual rpgs is just plain silly.
Where is Pathfinder kingmaker ?
Lord Matty, is there any good top favourite for feel good gameplay or wholesome story turn base or indie games? ( Too much games felt like more work after work or too stressful made me more empty inside) thank you for your attention
this list made me realize how broad the term RPG is nowadays. Slap a leveling system on a game and you're considered a full blown roleplaying game.
Yep, have a full conversation dedicated to this on CLS
right? hack and slash with some leveling and you're a rpg. oops.
Funny most of these aren't even RPG's.
@@MrMattyPlays cls?
Next thing you know TLOU2 will be included as an RPG becaus you can upgrade weapons unlock "skill trees" by finding books and craft materials

And persona 4 golden

Mike Dunlap I’m blind
@Dan Evans Nocturne was made in 2003 while this list only includes games made from 2010 and beyond...
The term "Role-Playing Games" is so broad that you could literally snap on any sub-genre, and it would be an RPG
I actually like Dragon Age: Inquisition. Waaaay more than Odyssey.
Odyssey can be higher than F only for those who never played original AC trilogy.
Agreed , it should be at least in B Tier, or even maybe A. It's not perfect but it's fun. Much better than Odissey
I loved it
I love inquisition, one of my fav games as i actually cried when it was over but i do cry easily

I like Matty because he's a Bethesda fan without being a shill, and he's a Bethesda critic without being overtly salty.
>he's a Bethesda critic without being overtly salty.
100% this
I wish I could be Bethesda critic without being overly salty😔
Like... A normal person?
@A A. I have been around since the pre Fallout 4 Matty. Would I have called him a shill, no. The thing is Bethesda made a turn and became far more money hungry than they used to be and I think Matty realized that. Bethesda is like a coin flip man. You may get Dishonered 1 and 2 and even Prey or DOOM. Then you get shit like Fallout fucking 76 what a joke of a game or Wolfenstein Youngblood, Brink, Rage 1 etc....
Wasnt he a fanboy for Fallout 4 tho
Should be "Since November 3rd 2009" so we can slap Dragon Age: Origins on that S tier row boi
Awakening was 2010.
I considered bending the rules... I won’t lie...
should have its own s+ tier
For me dao is an. B tear
It did nothing new, and what it does is very simplistic. POS story as well.
Odyssey, Divinity and Fallout 4 all ranked same?!?!?
This is borderline insanity
Bastion and fallout 4 being on the same tier is even worse. Its like its a clickbait
they do different things well.
take some different examples and you will face the same issue.
how do you compare divinity original sin and diablo 2? both are obviously under the rpg spectrum, and if you do not categorize them further - arpg or crpg then this is what you are going to end up with.
admitedly even if you take fallout 4 for what it is - random shit killer, explore-generic-content thing, it is still a mess. not even on the same level of something like odyssey which is 'shadow of war' power fantasy openworld generic content clearing arpg, which at the very least - it does well what it does.
@@fartloudYT if you call fallout 4 a generic game you need to see a doctor
@@callisto537 I've seen picnic blankets with less predictable patterns than that game
@@TheBaca219 another water head ... hi, how are you? May I help you with anything?
To me an RPG is a game that allows you the freedom to complete a mission in a zillion different ways based on the character you're trying to build. For instance, Kingdom Come Deliverance is a perfect example. You can go through the game by avoiding combat except one checkpoint
Yeah, KCD is amazing

I think Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen is a very underrated rpg game. I loved it even though I'm not into jrpgs.
Tbh it's not really a jrpg
@@LucaDavoli_ I can understand why he sees it as one. Normal western RPG's don't usually have party members and party combat. Doing quests to get other followers and such is pretty typical for JRPGs. But this must be one of the most western style JRPG that I know off and it is truly underrated.
@@Devonaxx Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Divinity Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, Icewind Dale, Solastra, etc etc. There's a shit ton of party-based Western RPGs.
@@LucaDavoli_ and now go on google and look up party based EASTERN rpgs... and then compare.
You name like 8-9 titles and call it a shit ton. The fact remains that party based rpgs is more common in jrpg then western. I never said that western rpgs dont have it. All I did was to say that I understood why he thought it was a jrpg. I never said that I believe its an jrpg. So I don't know why you are defending western party based rpgs so much? are you a dungeon master with the book and all?
@@Devonaxx You said "Normal western RPG's don't usually have party members and party combat", which is a false statement. Just because party-based RPGs are much more abundant in JRPGs, doesn't mean western RPGs don't usually have them as well. The whole party-based system was literally derived from Dungeons and Dragons, a western board game. And pretty much every western RPG we know today was inspired by DnD in some capacity.
Dragon's Quest, Grim Dawn, Pillars of Eternity, Persona 5, horizon zero dawn, tides of numenera, ni no kuni, you missed so many important rpgs
Love Horizon, but does it really qualify? It just has an upgrade system.
@@Tyler_W it's considered an action role-playing game
DQ 11 is a MASSIVE miss for him to not put on the list

If he can consider Assassins Creed an RPG and leave off DQ, Horizon, Etc, what a joke
So glad to see you’re still going my man. I remember watching you’re daily updates on speculations of fallout 4 back in like 2012 when I picked up new Vegas for the first time. Hope all is good
I feel like the main issue with dragon age 2 is 1. the devs didn't get enough time, which is how you get problems like their overwhelming reuse of maps and the weird faces, and 2. the rivalry options for most of the characters are actually kind of bad, especially for characters like merrill or fenris where as much as what they're doing isn't the best/healthiest, you can fully see where they're coming from and the rival route ends up feeling kinda abusive. Other than that I would personally put it in S or A tier
the combat in that game is still in my top 3 for rpgs
@@seanarnold349 oh same. Also someone brought up an interesting point on the repetitive maps thing recently, where it's probably not intended, but very funny if taken as canon: The reason why all the areas look the same is that Varric only describes the areas the first time they visit, and after a couple times he's just like "the wounded coast" or "a cave" without putting much detail into it and cassandra just pictures the same location map in her mind.
I thought the Rivalries were fantastic, often toxic but feels realistic. I agree with everything else though.
Matty: Intially puts Witcher 3 into A tier
Me: How dare you
Matty: Moves to S tier
Me: Matty you sexy beast
To be fair TW3 is S(S++) tier as a game but not as RPG. As an RPG i'd put it in B tier, but since any game with progression mechanic is in this list this video sadly goes to my "YOU DON"T EXIST TIER"

Never played the Mass Effect games. Very excited for the Trilogy remaster if it actually comes out and try it.
@UCD9rAkxrOOJy7U5UURAr7jA without changing anything? i think you mean without monetizing everything
I'm conflicted because EA and Bioware have declined in quality and are not the same as they used to be, can they really be trusted to faithfully remaster the trilogy without changing anything? We shall see.
Play them Mr. Gun Arm go now do it
Honestly the greatest series of games I have ever played, even considering the ending (at first release) was underwhelming. Given the updates they made with dlc and the fact it would be a remaster I would easily play through the trilogy again several times, absolutely some of the best characters of any game ever, period.

Great love for kcd and Outer Worlds. Two great games that get way overlooked.

The Outer Worlds is the opposite of overlooked.
outer worlds is the most mediocre boring game
@@deadmoney5580 you're a mediocre boring game.
Love coming back to your channel every once in a while, Matty. Your energy is refreshing, my friend. It makes me feel positive and enjoy these games more than I already do. Cheers!
I actually preferred 13 Lightning Returns over XIII-2, but I can see how it can be different from person to person. XIII is a great series imo most people that complain about it have either never played it and follow the popular trend they "heard about" to hate on xiii or the people who actually played xiii never got past the first opening mission because the game does open up more later, and I feel part 2 and 3 progressively took what it learned and got better.
I agree with you brother, FF XIII made me shed a tear in the end, and the last game that did it was X. I was afraid of playing XIII because of reviews too, but once I did it became my second favorite FF of all time, and I've played every single one of them. My only problem with Lightning Returns is the "end of the world" vibe which gave me a lot of anxiety cuz of that fucking clock telling me how many time I have left before the game ends, I hated it lol. But XIII-2 has the best chocobo song when you ride a red one, and no one will change my mind about it. XD
FF died after X.
All to be more consumer friendly.
Fire emblem on switch was one of the best games I've played in a decade. It's the first time in my entire life that I finished the game (and it's not a short game) and then immediately began a second playthrough which I also played all the way to completion.
I'm not a person that tends to replay games a lot, but damn was that one worth it.
What route did you start with? Played Golden Deer and actually dropped it before finishing my first playthrough. Just felt the characters were too flat (although not as bad as Fates). Awakening and Echoes are the only ones released after 2010 that I have re-played.
@@Samuel-th6fw Not the original poster but, I started with the blue lions. I remember immediately taking a liking to Dimitri’s character, and I believe I had no mistake in doing so. Dragon’s Dogma deserves at least an A tier, game's combat, pawn knowledge party system, versatility and replayability makes it not exactly an S tier due to it's weird and hard-to-comprehend story, and the characters are kinda bland, but everything else totally makes up for it. I myself actually understood the story pretty well when I first started playing it 10 years back and I really liked the uniqueness and originality.

I gotta say, DA:2 gets an unfair reputation. Yes it's massively flawed but it's got some great side quests, interesting characters, it totally breaks from the cookie cutter fantasy rpg archetype and goes for a more nuanced story. There's a lot to like if you can overlook the flaws
DA:2 gets the right reputation because it had to be the choosen, it had to be the best RPG after the king of RPGs DA:O.
@M M Piero Those are barely sentences
The problem with DA:2 is that it seems that they limited the game on purpose so it can be an "in-between" game from Origins to Inquisition, even though I loved the blood mage from DA:2, I pretty much did a speedrun so I could play Inquisition asap lol, and its the only DA that I haven't replayed since then, pretty boring

From what I played of it the game is enjoyable but sadly it is so damn buggy and unstable. For one I can't even use a bow without the game crashing, half the time quests either break or the textures freak out then the game crashes, every hour or so the game will just crash, and then you have the God awful load times. I kid you not the average load time for me is about 5 to 10 minutes. But looking past those problems it is a good game but id personally say bottom B or top C because the load times and instability

I agree that Dragon Age Origins is one of the best games out there. Loved how you can even recruit the villain into your party. DA2 should have been better however I like that the main character and dialogue options are voiced. I do have to say that the option titles are sometimes misleading as most of the time it is not exactly what the character will say. While Inquisition and DA2 could have been better. To me the whole serie is S tier to me. Simply for the dialogue options alone and the lore.
As for other games Kingdom Hearts series as a whole is still A tier to me. I absolutely love the combat system and the main story. The combat makes up for the fillers. FF7 Remake is an SS tier to me. Absolutely loved it and while it has flaws they nailed it for me!

This looks almost nothing like mine would and, unpopular opinion, that's ok.
There's "Dead to Me" and then there's Mass Effect Andromeda.
The combat in that game tho is so good
I’ll give it that
Driving around in the world was also fun. At least some nice landscapes. The major problem of Andromeda is its writing and characters. The bugs where not even that bad when compared to what Cyberpunk delivered.
LOL
I played it for the first time last year, and I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. Definitely enjoyed my time with it, despite not thinking I was going to. I think it gets a lot more flak than it deserves because of it's launch. New Vegas had a considerably worse launch, but it had some REALLY strong writing holding it up, which mass effect andromeda doesn't have the same degree of help. I think it's a solid game, yet still the unloved step-child of the mass effect series.
I didn't search for this, I am now committed to watching a 40min video of a man judging his games

You should take a look into the mediocre direction, if you ever revisit the world notice how bland everything is.
It still baffles me that the same people who made Pillars, New Vegas and Tyranny (the latter of which is criminally underrated, it's playing a dark side figure done right) made the outer worlds so boring really.
@@tobiasL1991 Not the same people. The team that made NV also worked on Pillars. Tyranny and Outer worlds are different teams. There is overlap but the main creative teams for these three projects were entirely different.
People always say the 'team that made FONV are gone' but that isn't true.
Yeah it’s a AA title and definitely B tier at the highest. Was really surprised about the A tier
OW was good but I agree with you. Actually, I felt Pillars of Eternity was much the same. PoE is the first RPG I abandoned nearing the end.
I'm really burnt out on RPG's but there's a couple here that caught new interest for me thanks to your list review.
Since you are burnt out you must have played many rpgs could you suggest some for me I’m just getting into them
@@thomasmchugh6230everything on S tier on this list is a good start. But feel like Elden Ring is unmatched right now
@@thomasmchugh6230 trails in the sky and persona 3 because the later persona games' qol are too good in comparison
I loved Fable 3, and the entire franchise. It's a lotta nostalgia, and I acknowledge 3 is pretty flawed but I don't think it's F tier flawed.
You forgot Dragon Quest 11!
Good list overall, but do yourself a favor and play Fire Emblem Three Houses and Dragon Quest 11.
Dragon quest 11 is s tier
Matty please do one for 2000-2010, that's the absolute best era for RPGs, would love to see what you put where.
Can already see VtMB, Kotors and original Fallouts (including NV) being in the S tier.
persona 3 fes definitely S tier
The 90s will remember this
@@mycelia_ow GOTHIC 1+2
as long as dragon age origins, deus ex and Baldur's gate 2 get S I'll be satisfied
1 year late but I have to say this list has been helpful for me in narrowing down which RPG’s I’ve missed that I need to try. Also have to say I’ve been waiting for a dragon age game that brings me back to that feeling I had when I first played origins. The sequels feel like they were delivered by a separate company and were missing the core that made origins so great.
Im glad you put the south park ones so high. Those are perfect 'light' rpgs. I LOVED the combat system in the second one. Amazing stories too. Just a short and sweet fun time.
I would've really liked to know where he put the Risen Franchise and Elex.
I don’t Matty has ever played a Piranha Bytes game. In his Gothic Remake video, he said he tried the original Gothic just to compare it to the remake teaser, but never ended up finishing the game. And he didn’t include any of the Gothic or Risen games in his 2000-2010 tier list. For me personally, I’d give Elex a high B, and I haven’t played Risen yet. Although, I played Elex on console, so maybe it’s better on PC. And I only ever played it once. I should replay it after I play the Risen games, which I own but just haven’t gotten to yet. I really hope we get an Elex 2 soon though, the story of Elex was really cool, and if they could just fix the combat I’m sure it would be a top tier RPG.
IMHO, Risen 1 A , Risen 2 and 3 C ; Gothic 1 A ; Gothic 2 S ; Gothic 3 B
Divinity original sin 2 is insanely fun. Especially when you use mods to open up more available classes and abilities
oh man... i've played this game so many times! it's so good
@@rafaelvieira2845 it's the only rpg i took my time the first i played it. I stayed in the first two maps for like 30 hours just absorbing every dialogue. most of the time in other games, i skip through the talking but dos2 has a charm in it's dialogues.
And all the possibility the game has,l to solve each quest, is just amazing, tho I don't play with mods because I play in console (tho, now there are some gift bags), the game is an amazing experience.
Wait how many classes do we get at the start? O.O
I have about 400 hours in this game and I still enjoy it, incredible
It's funny personally I had never thought of some of these games as RPGs, like Borderlands is a looter shooter, Deus Ex is an immersive Sim, and most (not all) DragonBall games are fighting games. However they do all contain RPG systems this is undeniable. It's funny never realized just how broad the term Role Playing Game was.
borderlands isnt an rpg. thats like calling farcry an rpg just because it has skills
@@shay4261 Well obviously it's a looter shooter but, almost every game in the industry these days has some elements to them that are from RPG genre. Doesn't make them RPGs but the features are from that genre.
Dark Souls 3 was not just my first experience into a brutally difficult series but RPG'S in general.
Seeing Fable 3 in F hurts my soul that game was my baby 😭😭
I dont think it deserves f but its definitely not as good as fable 2
Lol the sanctuary alone makes that game shit
Certainly doesn't deserve an F. I feel a lot of the placement of these games is always relative to other games by the same studio or in the same series.
If you asses Fable 3 on everything it did individually and compare it to other games on the list, it's nowhere near an F.
@@therockingvolbeat3630 How many of the games on this list legitimately are though?
The Rocking Volbeat I preferred it but it definitely wasn’t as good as fable 2
Dragons Dogma is A to me i Love it, i play it religiously once a year its so underrated. i prey for a sequel.
a sequel got confirmed kindaish the developer said he loved to make a sequel but he needs a yes from the higher ups!.
Dragons dogma will always be S tier to me just because the gameplay is so fun and I tend to prioritise gameplay the most above other elements in a game. I love how different the classes play and all the abilities you can get with them. Some of the quests were pretty boring, but having an RPG with a great combat system more than made up for it. Even though it's a flawed game, it's a gem to me.
Dragon dogma is S tier, this list not valid at all
@Georg Tolstoj I love Dragons Dogma but I’d say it’s A tier because I don’t feel like it belongs in my S tier with Baldur’s Gate, Pillars of Eternity and Dragon Age Origins. It’s like a high A up there with New Vegas. It’s just my opinion
I just played it on switch finished all including the end game BBI about 85 hours to 100% everything. Absolutely great game honestly
Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen for PC deserves a spot in this tier list. Particularly in A+ or S tier.
I agree at least an A, I’m interested in seeing how dd2 does in the future when it comes out.
To this day kingdoms of Amalur , the reckoning holds a special place in my heart
It’s a very very special game my friend
Diablo III was a generous B with RoS. I feel that my nostalgia is too great for D2 for them to ever top it at Blizzard.
As soon as I saw bloodborne in S tier I knew this was gonna be a good list
Why
@@xx_pcgamer_xx6866 Because Bloodborne rules
Same. Bloodborne is in my top 3 games
Bloodborne fans are fucking crazy. This is called a real gaming addiction, to tell the truth, I'm even afraid of them xD
@@LuM4rex lmao we have no remorse forcing this game into people’s throats

Fallout new vegas and elder scrolls skyrim V are best rpg games that ever made
dont fucking change my mind
I agree
You need to play more RPGs...
Personally love Dragon Age: Inquisition. Could be because it was my first Dragon Age game, but i personally thought the story and characters were very good. I will say it’s a bit Ubisoft like with all the collectibles, but overall I love it
Agreed! It's an amazing game!
Honestly it's one of the best RPG's i have ever played. I have never played a game where i have felt so powerful. The choices, the throne/war table room, the customization, the music, the characters, the dragons boss battles etc. And the fucking Trespasser DLC was just epic.
These comments are why I’m doing a 2020 review. There must be something I’m missing!
I think the issue is that because of all the filler stuff, the actual story missions fell short. The story missions they did have were so good but they just needed some more of them instead of a lot of the filler side quests. The areas were all even pretty cool to me. Just to much random side quests.
@@MrMattyPlays YES!! Thank you, Matty!! I can't wait to watch that, thank you! As a Dragon Age content creator, I eagerly await your thoughts after playing the Trespasser DLC! Whoop!
If you like Persona, I recommend playing the Trails of Cold Steel games.
I keep hearing about the Trails games. I need to take the leap.
I seriously adore Persona and just got into the games recently. Never played Trails but they look and sound pretty good, I'll have to try sometime
omg they were not on the list either all of the trials
Trails games are very niche. But, theyre amazing.
I started with Trails in the Sky and I recommend playing that trilogy before steel. The world keeps building in every trails game so far.
Great list only thing is I would put XC1 at high B or low A. DAI at B, ME3 at low A, DS3 at S and KH DDD at low C.
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days was so good. It's more darker than the rest of the series. And focuses more on the kingdom hearts original characters while still having subtle comnections to disney and FF characters story archs.
yeah okay but honestly no one really gives a fuck about kh's story lol
@@sashabent6585 a lot of fans do. Except KH3. That game was just ass.

The god of rpg is Skyrim, Dark soul and The witcher 3, lets be honesy
Since Maruki theme is playing in the background I'm gonna assume that Persona 5/Royal is gonna be fairly high
Matty always has Persona 5 Royale music playing the background. Can't blame him. That game's music is incredible.

Also going to check out FFXIII-2 at some point. Absolutely hated 13 but I'll always give an FF game I haven't played a fair chance.
Mass Effect 3 deserves a 2nd chance. As a complete package with all the dlc its S tier imo.
This game has the best written dialogue of any rpg save for maybe The Witcher 3.
The banter between Shephard and his partymembers, him and his crew and squadmates among themselves is amazing.
i have been searching for rpg games for so long i think this list single handedly gonna save me
well i just watched the video , and except 2 or 3 games i did play everything on s to b tier that my pc can run :D i guess i just need a new pc for more rpg
Honestly SWTOR should've been on the list, since it's an RPG with MMO elements bolted onto it.
It's more of an RPG than other games on this list so I was shocked it didn't make it onto the list,
I love that game, I need to get back on there ASAP.
It was only rpgs since 2010??
Swtor is the mmorpg we all wanted litterally it just took too long to develop to what it is today. Everyone should go back and play it its still active and 50+ hrs of new story gameplay plus the multiplayer is compettive and under rated asf. Does everything an mmo should and what a rpg should!

While I agree with the xiii-2 rating it doesn't feel right to put ff7r in the same rating. I would easily put ff7r in at least an A tier. When it launched I didn't stop playing it until I had the platinum. I see a lot of people thinking DAI should have been higher as well. I'll have to go back to that game and give it another go. Would be awesome if he does an updated tier list each year for new games or games he revisits etc
My only memory with Dragon Age Inquisition is restarting the game every time because i constantly wanted to change my class and i never made it past the winter biome because of this
The mad lad actually put Assassins Creed Odyssey in B. Tier over Dragon Age Inquisition LMFAO
Inquisition is sick (ofcourse origins is way better) and AC Odyssey is a kick in the balls to the fans. Don't really understand his choice here.
Fire Emblem 3 houses is a top tier game
Right ? It’s my second favorite game on switch. It was absolutely amazing
@@pennywisethedancingclown775 it is pretty good, I feel like it is A tier at best though, has a lot of flaws when you directly compare the gameplay to some of the old school games. Still probably my favorite game on the Switch other than BotW and the Xenoblade games.
@@Minekings101 imao it deserves nothing less than A tier. But yeah, its flaws, even in its best qualities, like the story and the characters are proeminent enough to disqualify it from S tier. Its one of my top 5 favorites with nier automata and the witcher, but objectively its below.
It’s my favorite game on the switch
and claude is an S tier character
My 2 favorite games from this list are...
1) Divinity Original Sin 2, that game is a total gem, it has some flaws of course, like the endings, the anticlimactic final boss, and the romances feel kind of am afterthought, but nothing is perfect, and this game virtues totally make it worth it. One of the best games I have ever played recently.
Dragon Age 2, despite any flaw it might have, this game (along with Dragon age Origins) is definitely one of my most favorite games ever, if something, the only thing I would criticize is the recycled environments, aside of that, I have no complaints (or nothing else bothers me at least), I really enjoy playing Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 a lot.
Dragon age 2 was a war crime in video game form
Origins was a masterpiece tho
Finally someone else that loves DA2. It's my favorite in the series despite its flaws, and just like you the only thing that really caught my attention in a negative sense were the recycled environments
I can’t stand DA2. After DA:O which is one of my favourite ever games.. just the ridiculous behind the back staff shooting etc. just found the game and tone and skills and characters dev, and inventory and gameplay awful compared to dA:O. The director resigned during the development due to the studio exec pressure taking the game into a weird action rpg direction.
Ive always loved Inquisition, id have it in A-tier!
