Matty is the kinda guy that when he says he likes RPG's, you can't retort with "Then name every one" cause he'll friggin do it.
Love your content man!
kevduit watches matty, mad respect
But this list is missing KOTOR II (even better than the first, IMO) and Piranha Bytes games (not perfect by any means, but really good games nonetheless).
dude didnt even mentioned Gothic and Vampire the masquerade lol , wth u even talkin about.
@@tevildo9383 wrong.
It’s criminal that Vampire the masquerade:bloodlines isn’t here
should be at the fucking TOP
really no
Yes ! Really good game.
The dialogue, atmosphere and voice acting in that game is really next level shit
Gangrel and Malkavian for life!
Matty, I played KOTOR I and KOTOR II these past two weeks. KOTOR I is now one of my top 5 games, and KOTOR II is one of my top 10. The games were phenomenal, I wish Obsidian could have finished their game, as it was clear from playing on console that the game was both missing content and had a strange final few hours. Overall I really enjoyed it and am now on the KOTOR hype train with you
Knights Of The Old Republic is getting a HD remastered for every console
XBox original KOTOR vet here. Welcome to the club.
Idk if you are on PC but there are some mods, the ones for KOTOR II come to mind specifically, that add some removed content that still sat as files in the game data.
@@9-b_b-9 i second this, it added hours of content!
I played it for the first time a few years ago on my phone. Low key had super low expectations because I don’t like these kind of RPGs (I’m basically an action rpg guy) but I fuggin LOVED it to where I was absolutely addicted man. Idk why but the gameplay, the story, i loved it all.
I'm surprised there is no Gothic on the list. I know it's less popular outside Europe, but damn it's a god tier RPG.
K I can't wait for the Gothic Remake
I am surprised to find the obscure (and honestly trash) game like Two Worlds here and not a great game like Gothic.
Gothic 2 is one of the best games I ever played and introduced me to open world/sandbox games even before Oblivion. The world felt so fleshed out and challenging
True. Gothic 1&2 are amazing games.
The 3rd on the other hand...
@@alessandrodelisi5884 3 is not as good, but after it's been fixed it's still a decent game.
Deus ex and Vampire the Masquerade are missing...Pain
And kcd
Vampire was boring tho......
@@150edmiston9 Heresy... HERESY! O:
VtMB still one of my all-time favorite games.
Deus ex sux de D
That persona 5 music in the background is all I can focus on lol
Great list, it's missing Gothic and Witcher tho
Yeah
Or Nocturne.
Also diablo 2
Risen (2009) --- a very underrated RPG is missing here. Guess it isn't a "Major" RPG.
Risen is alright he should play Gothic 1 and 2
Risen is a great game
Fallout 3 and New Vegas: best RPGs of all time for me. Yes, even more so than Witcher 3.
agreed
I liked Witcher 3 but couldn’t finish it. It was too long for my taste and I felt like I was getting nowhere in the story after 20+ hours of gameplay.
That’s a funny way to write a 2
Just say those are the only 3 RPG’s you’ve played and go...
@Oppc Vepo I have to do some serious mental gymnastics & eliminate the knowledge of fundamental rpg elements from my mind before even considering any of the CD project games as *R P G*
Dude Ultimate Alliance is so underrated def a treat for someone who is looking for a good marvel RPG.
I played the 360, Wii, and the PSP versions of this game lol.
That persona 5 music hits so hard.
Play Baldur's Gate 1&2 and get back to us 🤣
BG2 is one of the best games I've ever played. I still play it regularly.
The greatest ever.
One of the Best games !! Waiting for 3
@@garrettwilson9664 Wrong, PST is.
NO GOTHIC??? Mission failed, my good sir.
I havent played gothic but even I know how much it influenced the genre
Yep, major failure. He has two worlds on this list but not gothic. How is it possible?
I have played like, 1% of the games on your lists. So it's less hearing someone's opinion and more being educated on rpg history
You have a lot to look forward to then! Don't spoil too much for yourself, maybe someday you can play a lot of them.
@@blakbear6528 there is always time, look on the bright side, you can look forward to playing lots of classics and all time greats if you want to. And they are mostly cheaper now than ever before
I always love your tier lists! You made me sweat with my favorite game, Oblivion haha. Keep it up Matty!
Oblivion ❤️. One of the most underrated games ever. Easily in my top three games ever.
I watched for 15 minutes, but had to stop because the BG2 thing just kept nagging at me. Saying "I never went back and played the Gold Box games or Phantasia, I'd get it, but BG2? That's a "You really should play it" type of game. Oddly enough, if you want to see where Demon Souls and Dark Souls was born, there was a game called "King's Field" for the PS1 that was just insane. Wow was it difficult, and just one big area with no loading screens or obscenely long corridors to hide them. Wow that game brings back memories. The first first person "Action" RPG I've ever playedqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq. Back to BG2, that's like rating Action/Adventure from '95 on and not including Tomb Raider, BG2/Throne of Bhaal were that important. They completely redefined Western RPG's. Party banter, Romances, choices from 1 did carry over into 2 and absoluterly mattered all the way through Throne of Bhaal. Matty Matty Matty...
Oblivion has aged poorly in my opinion, but I still absolutely love it.
Still has better unique quests than Skyrim IMO.
@@dingle2987 REAL better than the College of Winterhold, that's for sure.
npcs and dialogue has definitely
Job system was in FF3 (NES) and it worked about as well as it did in FFX2, however, in FFV, the job system was absolute gold. Leaving the one slot open to create hybrid-classed characters was so fun and engaging from a tactical standpoint.
To this day, I play the FFV Randomizer pretty fervently. It's like the randomizer concept was made for this game.
No Demon's Souls 2009, Shin megami tensei 3 Nocturne 2004, Dragon Quest 8 2004, the Xenosaga trilogy, Suikoden 3,4,5, and Skies of Arcadia 2000
Demon souls was niche back when it came out . Alot of people didn't catch on till dark souls
@@farmsalot1233 not really the reason why it got localized was because of word of mouth it had a reputation and it sold pretty good world-wide.
Maybe he shouldn't have used the click baity title ultimate list
Nice to see that there was footage of most games added this time ;)
That LOTR game was awesome but there was a HUGE difficulty spike at Helms Deep. Fun game but tough.
First, holy **** you cannot do a tier list leaving Baldur's Gate 2 in the generic "Respect" column. That game is arguably the greatest RPG of all-time. You owe it to your fans and yourself to try this out. Second, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines has to be on here. If you haven't played it, you should. If you have, how do you leave it off?
i really would love to see golden son be redone - maybe packed with the second one as well, or have that in a sort of 'second half of the game' style instead of it's own game, maybe done sorta like the dot hack titles where the base level for stuff in the second is max level in the first.
Matty, you should definitely look into playing Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2. I love the series. The first game has a very quaint story with interesting mechanics and an absolutely incredible soundtrack. It is a bit aged with its combat and graphics, but still holds up for being an old PS2 game. It's one of the few JRPGs I'm actually into a lot, as most of them I just don't vibe with. I mention the first game more than the second because I actually played the first game and beat it a lot. The second game I never finished. I got to the final dungeon and just never made it through as a kid.
I know you said "no niche RPGs" and stuff, but really surprised to not see Chrono Cross, Dragon Quest 8 or Tales of Vesperia. All are big million sellers (and you even gave Chrono Trigger an S ranking).
Love this style of video
Gothic 1, 2 & 3 are all-time classics!
Matty with the content i crave
Was surprised to not see Dragonball Z: Attack of the Saiyans on here, an incredible DBZ RPG that really deserved a sequel
How are C-grade console H&S games (Champions, Dark Alliance) considered RPG's over games like: Diablo 2, Nox, Sacred, Titan Quest and Dungeon Siege which aren't here ?
Some notable games I'd mention:
Larian games: Divine Divinity/Beyond Divinity and Divinity II.
Piranha Bytes games: Gothic 1+2 (not 3) and Risen.
Troika games: Vampire: Bloodlines, Temple of Elemental Evil and Arcanum.
Others: Deus Ex, The Witcher, Neverwinter Nights 2, Wizardry 8, Freedom Force, Silent Storm, King's Bounty: The Legend, Drakensang and Overlord.
I like the list, you just forgot the Shadow Hearts Trilogy for ps2. Extremely underrated at the time and a lost in time IP. Another good one that was not on the list is Xenosaga. I recommend both of these games to any rpg lovers.
Excellent video. 👍😄
Hey Matt you ever play The Last Remnant on 360? It came out around the same time as Lost Oddyssy but i dont think ive ever heard you talk about it. I loved it as a kid and i loved the wierd fish people lol
There are a lot of articles talking about rumors of New Vegas 2 and I would love to know your opinion on it
Just gonna guess: “YES”
The only way it’s going to happen is if Starfield is a huge success and Bethesda knows they won’t make a Fallout 5 for a long time. So Starfield, ES6, Starfield 2 or Fallout 5
@@marcioffi27 if it was being made it would probably be obsidian and now that Microsoft owns both(soon) they might get along enough to work together.
@@dailyraptor7700 yeah but you are forgetting a huge part, Bethesda is still operating as an independent company just under the umbrella of microsoft, so they decide what they do with their games (Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Starfield) and both companies are 5-10years out from a brand new project...
@@marcioffi27 but they listen to Phil spencer, because they are under the gaming division, and is not the same level as the Xbox.
I will ship my copy of dark cloud 1 and 2 to you on loan for review if you want. I also love that Lost Odyssey is on this list, and love it
dragon age origins and baldurs gate are so similar, in fact dao was marketed as a return to form when it came out, a more modern type of the older isometric view RPGs bioware used to make. Definitely one of the best games bioware made, alongside kotor and bg 2.
Third Age is fantastic! Just replayed through a free months ago, and it holds up....other than graphically.
Don’t really agree but to each their own
I love that I was just watching your other RPGs tier video last night and I thought to myself that you had to have had a list for these prior years.
Thank you! Been a fan since 2016
Alpha Protocol. I have never returned a game so fast in my life!
Matty, I know viewer demands are taboo, but for the love of Andraste PLEASE do yourself a favor and play Baldur's Gate I+II. On the new enhanced versions you can even play 'Storymode' to see the narrative and characters if you don't have time for the combat and burn through the content. As a fellow DAO superfan, it is something I think you'd enjoy.
Oh hell yeah! Totally forgot about LOTR Third Age. Played it on the game cube after school till bedtime as a kid
You should check out the RPG, Child of Light. The artwork is beautiful and everything about it is so lovable!
I'm somewhere in the Dragon Age: Origins credits :D as a localization tester. Very proud. When I meet someone who loves it I'll usually say, "yeah, I basically made the game"
Mom we made it
DAO is one of my favorite games. That's awesome. 👍😄👏❤💪🏆
@@buffcanuck83 Yeah, I basically made the whole thing. No biggie. :p
@@sanda386 Ikr, like whatever, just something I did in my spare time. lol. 😆
That’s fucking awesome, one of the best games I’ve ever played
No Diablo II? I mean,really?
Good list, but I was sad you didn't include my favorite Square banger Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.
Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia WERE my life as I was getting out of HS in 98. Grandia II has the best turned based mechanics to date (that I have played), and don't even get me started on LOST ODYSSEY!
Remakes/Masters needed: Alpha Protocol and Spec Ops the Line.
Wow I can't believe you're such a big Bioware fan and never played Bg2! In my opinion their finest ever work and my favourite game of all time
This guy is probably the one RPG superfan I respect the most.
How have you not played Baldurs Gate 2?
Hey Matty, did you ever play any game in the Legend of Heroes series (Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel etc)?
Can't wait for the ultimate Square, Enix, and SquareEnix RPG Tier lists.
There's so many big RPG's missing from this list it's not even funny
you know what needs to come next now
I had never played Legacy of Goku 1 or 2, so it wasn’t until watching your video that I saw anything about the game, gameplay-wise. Gotta say... it reminds me of Crystalis from the NES days.
Man i miss this era. So many, good games.
Yeah, my only complaint is that all rpg games before 2010 suffers from "old rpg syndrom" where they pretty much expect you to know what the controls are, where to go, what things does without really indicating it so im often stuck walking around for an hour having no idea where to go during my first play throughs.
Now we're talking! This gunna be good.
Also i think Legend of Dragoon would be s good edition to the list
Paper Mario: TTYD is easily one of my favorite games of all time
Same
Very interesting🤔 where would you sort in the Witcher 1 ?
S because it can't be worse than DA:O
Holy crap I've been waiting for this Matty! 🥳
Resonance of fate was fricking awesome i recommend giving that a go bro
Couldn't help but notice there was no Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Witcher 1, Deus EX ,or Demon Souls on this list. Kind of huge omissions, Matty
He forgot Bloodlines too..
I get why Final Fantasy XII isn't on the list as it got a really great remaster a few years ago, but still, its so different from the rest of the series that it would have deserved a minute of discussion even if you did not like it.
Before watching the video: If Baldur's Gate II is not on this list, then fuck it!
After the video: Every Bethesda game landed in S tier...smh.
Dark cloud 1 and 2 had dungeon crawling systems that were groundbreaking... like riding a tank/hovercraft in dungeons and literally time travelling and building the future by literally building the past ... you directly influence so much its absolutely sureal
What’s the dark moment with the pirates in Jade Empire?
The Witcher was 2007.
Grandia 2 on the ps2 was missed off that game was stellar. I seem to have had a similar childhood xD i played tons of gba but not tons of rpgs on the gamecube
Suikoden III and Suikoden V are S tier RPG games that should be on here.
I love persona 5 music so much in videos, it fits in everywhere man
What the heck are you using for this ranking system? This is cool.
google tiermaker or something and it will come up
@@Kinta02 I found it, thanks!
This list is already flawed because I don't see the Gothic trilogy 😔
I am replaying Gothic 2 Night of the Raven and its still one of the best RPGs to this day.
Many newer games don't even have half of what makes that game great.
Its a legendary game imho and no its not a niche series
@MrMattyPlays you forgot Cyberpunk! Haha common. Its at least a respect ranking. But other than that nice vid bro. RPGs are the best and alot of the OGs will always be the best.
I also want to say I really respect your opinion about fallout. 3 and NV were amazing. And its so sad obsidian didnt get there bonus, it was indeed there best work and although the conflict might be petty I think they were going for that. The main driving plot points are revenge on benny and mysteriously finding hints about the other courier. Not I want to say that those games and even oblivion and Skyrim have very similar intros but only in the way that you are somehow greatly inhibited (jail for no reason as the weight of the world is hefted upon you, on your way to your execution as a doom riding dragon saves you, stuck in a vault built for the post apolcalyps you live in/lost your dady, and shot in the head/missing your package) I think new vegas does it hands down the best though sorry to say! Ide rank them in this order on there intros. New Vegas, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3.
hey matty what is your opinion on valheim?
Having played through BG2 + ToB multiple times, I'd argue it belongs to S tier. Unforgettable story and characters, best gaming experience ever.
Even though I enjoyed playing DAO very much, I'd rather put it into tier A. The writing was really good, but its RPG mechanics simply doesn't hold up to D&D.
Great list. Where’s lunar though? Silver star story is an amazing game. Went in with low expectations and my mind was blown, this is in 2022 too!
I’d put Fallout 3 in B category
Through a modern lens I would agree; New Vegas is a much better game. But experiencing FO3 at the time was mind-blowing.
*Puts Dragon Age in S-tier*
I love you.
Begun the RPG war has...
I loved Lord of the Rings the Third Age!!! Amazing game I wish it was backwards compatible on the Xbox.
Same here I played it endlessly on I believe PS2
Oblivion is really good RPG, I would give it A or S for its ranking.
it suffers from the scaling though. But, AMAZING quest design
@@user-ms5tq1dh7i The leveling system in that game is objectively awful. If you can play it on PC and fix it, the game becomes an amazing RPG experience.
I regret not play lost oddysee when I was younger
I would love to see a alpha Protocol remake or remastered
I pretty much agree with your list, except Ida moved Oblivion to A tier. lol Also, to my sad regret I've never played Alpha Protocol, Lost Odyssey, or Jade Empire. :(
Loved Valkyrie, I just wish there was less need to grind on occassion. I liked the tactical aspect, but with the grinding missions it got boring rather fast...
You’re the best RUclipsr of all time.
I loved the vid. But i feel personally attacked by Tales oS in B tier. XD how could you!
2010s Ultimate RPG tier list when? 😊
Dungeon Siege 1 and 2, what's your take on them?
I know you said major RPGs, but come on, they are some of the best action RPGs
no gothic ? This franchise is THE BEST from its time
Can't wait to drunkenly judge and yell at Matty for 40 minutes now.
dragons dogma was one of my favs alongside mass effect
Dragon's Dogma is 2012.
@@Whippets i know but im just saying out of all rpgs
@@__last Fair enough. It's one of my favorites as well, although more so for the combat than anything else.
Matty I am telling you, paper Mario thousand year door is a phenomenal JRPG, I highly highly recommend it!
Fallout Tactics out of 1,2 and that one was my favourite when i was young. Dunno why :D just loved tactics.
I guess Alpha Protocol is so good that it is in both of your rankings. ;)
Great list! Baldur's Gate 2 is a masterpiece! I've only played through it twice and have put well over 200 hours in. I still feel like I haven't seen nearly everything the game has to offer. It was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had.
Next can you please do 80-99?
Planescape: Torment being 1999 is untouchable.
It would be an insult to even compare that masterpiece to any other in existence.
Playing TWEWY solo on Switch with both joycons, each acting as a character is completely different but just as fun as the original IMO.
Lost Odyssey was a great game for the xbox i hope they make more in this world! And also you forgot about Blue Dragon on the Xbox from 2007, that was a great cult classic at least for me, it was very good and i wish it was popular enough for a sequel
Bro. Matty. WTF dude. Play Baldurs Gate 2. Jesus Christ. S Tier. It's an absolute Masterpiece. Especially if you play BG1, the expansion, then BG2 and Throne of Bhaal all with the same character (you can import ala Mass Effect).
Do it. DO IT.
EDIT: Where the heck is Deus Ex? JC even pops up in the intro!
