  • The full knife review/overview of my new EDC folding knife, the Spyderco Manix 2 in S30V with G10 handle scales. I truly feel that this is one of the very best EDC folding knives that money can buy.
    The various versions of the Manix 2 come in at around $140-150 USD or $170-180 CAD-forgot to mention that in the video...

    I am a recent arrival to the Manix 2 party. I thought the Para 3 was my goldilocks Spyderco, and bought multiple variants. The compression button on a Crucarta purchase made me realize how the Para 3 wasn't perfectly ambidextrous, and I had to rely on grippy scales for traction. I was able to one-hand open and close easily with my right hand, but my dominant left hand had difficulty. Switching the clip to the other side helped. I have no such problems with the Manix 2. It excels at all the different methods of deployment and closing the knife is just like the Axis lock knives I own.

    Just picked up the CruCarta Manix XL for $166 and I absolutely love it! I love me a legitimately full size folder, and the 2.99” cutting edge on the standard Manix 2 is just a tad small for my taste.

    Manix 2 with AWT liner less aluminum scales is absolutely amazing. It makes the manix feel even better, more high quality than it does to begin with. The aluminum liner less scales make it lighter, even more ergonomic, it just feels great. Getting rid of the steel liners and g10 scales for 2 solid aluminum scales so you have a manix with 2 aluminum scales as opposed to steel liners and g10 scales. It feel a lot like all metal frame lock knives. It has that solid high quality feel that all metal frame locks have. But it’s lighter. And the ball bearing lock is butter smooth. Drop shut. Manix 2 with aluminum scales and a ti or aluminum ball cage is just fantastic.

    Took mine apart earlier today (05/29/2023). I got scared because the spring got away from me. Luckily I was able to find it. I wiped everything with rubbing alcohol and then I lubricated not only the washers but the pivot itself. My Manix 2 came with the blade not centered. I tried centering it before but it went back to the show side so I didn't bother trying to center it. As long it's not dragging, as long as there's no blade play, lock rock or pivot lash, I'm happy. It's a great carry knife. A true do-it-all blade.

      I’ve got a brand new S45VN PM2 that’s the same way but I haven’t taken it apart yet to try and get the slide to center. I’m going to do just as you did but I’m going to take some 3000 grit sandpaper on my granite block to polish the washers, plus buff them with a dremel and some compound. I need to get a few new ball catches for my 3 Manix 2’s along with lightweight springs and ceramic balls. I’ve heard that makes a great knife phenomenal.

    Speaking of omega springs, I don't have any Benchmades but I do have some SOGs. I snapped the ones in my TAC-XR. Now I'm quite leery of using my Vision XR. Spyderco's ball-bearing lock is a lot sturdier. I also hear that if you somehow break the coil spring, you can use the spring of a ball-point pen.

    My 2nd Spyderco, first being a bug. So first non lol Spyderco was the manix2 lite. I need to break it in some but so far I really like it. My only complaints are that you can't easily take the scales of without a drill, and the spydie hole in my opinion is a bit too big. It is too easy to accidentally put your middle finger in the hole during the reverse flick. That being said I am already saving to buy one of the more premium versions. Preferably one with magnamet. So these issues aren't that bad.

  • @PatTheRiot

    I own the very same manix2 and I couldn't agree more. Its just the best folder one can get. Benchmade is maybe half the feel in terms of quality. A griptilian with heavy scales could MAYBE equal it but that would be almost 2 manix.

    • @chimchu3232
      @chimchu3232 Год назад +2

      100% I have a few benchmade knives, and I just never use them anymore. Spyderco all the way. Even if you buy nice aftermarket scales for a spyderco, it's less than most nice benchmades, and you get a much sturdier knife.

    • @HardOnGearChannel

      Totally agreed. That being said, the M4 Freek came as close as any benchmade has yet. That one felt pretty clean out of the box.

      @@chimchu3232 The feel in hand just sells the blade. I tried pretty much all the benchmades before picking up the manix2 and I just knew that was my blade. I examined the demo and 2 other blades and they were absolutely all ridiculously identical. That my friend is skilled craftmanship. Ive never seen such standards in any mid range knife. I mean, in this day. Im very tempted towards the lil native compress lock to match the set 🤪 (The 3 manix all drop shut the same way, same weight in lock, same snap, same finish and detail. All perfectly smooth. That's worth gold in this day and age, spydercolorado doing some good stuff)

    Love the manix series but the sr1 lite is insanely hard to beat for $38... if joe x can't kill it, then it can't die.
    But the manix is definitely a more refined and all around better knife for everything EXCEPT abuse. If you're planning to pry a car door open or baton a log with a folder the cold steels are #1. If you're going to be realistic and use a knife as a knife, I love my spydercos.

    • @HardOnGearChannel
      @HardOnGearChannel  Год назад +2

      No arguments at all with that comment. You nailed the Manix 2’s area of expertise exactly. The SR1 Lite is a way tankier knife, but harder for many to EDC comfortably. The Manix 2 just hits it for me better across the board 👌

    I think I've convinced myself that manix 2 is probably the next knife I'm getting but i may go gentleman's first and get the sun/moon , only cause i think it's far more likely to be sold out and possibly not to return for a while if ever and I've convinced myself I'm buying it without buying it for so long, (i hope someone can relate or appreciate the absurdity of what I'm about to say) I've practically counted it in my collection for so long, the excitement of owning it will possibly lose its thrill, enough so or when i get jazzed about a new knife, i have to weigh is this new knife against the one i should own already and decide if it's worth getting this new and exciting find, pushing back the now undeserved sun/moon. Something has to give and we all know where this ends. New rule, when buying a knife it is recommended you purchase up to 3 knives or $300 and change, whichever comes first. My real concern right now though is, lightweight manix 2 or something else. This is the 3rd approval of the ball bearing manix2. I suppose I'm not as concerned about the blade steel as they'll all be a first

    Tip for us viewers; Slow down the movements with the object in question, in this case, the knife. When you whip around the knife the viewers can't see the knife. When the viewer pauses to try and get a good look, the image is smeared. Sloooooow down. Show the object from every angle and let the viewer get a good look. It will certainly fall shut when the lock is retracted. The blade will freely and smoothly swing back and forth with zero friction when the lock is retracted if it's properly adjusted with all play just taken out. Later Spyderco models with the bushing pivot including the manix-2 come from the factory pre-set and non adjustable with either no play at all or just .001" to .003" side to side play when the lock is retracted. Older models with standard pivots can be adjusted but either way it sounds like they all may be illegal in Kanada. What a shame.

      I did some research on this and asked someone in law enforcement and they agreed that it was more so butterfly knives and autos or a knife that could be engaged by the wrist flick that fell into what they would confiscate. If you had to manipulate the locking mechanism to make it happen it didn't fall into the categories they were generally looking for. But in the same breath it's up to the discretion of the officer. Canadian knife laws need a major over haul to be much more clear.

    Manix 2 hogs up the pocket with very little cutting edge, and is just heavy and fragile definitely not hard use. It has good ergos and action once broken in but it fails miserable everywhere else same as the pm2 if you want good working spydercos the Japanese models are where it's at

      Agreed that Spydercos aren’t “Hard Use like Cold Steel or Emerson models, but I can promise you that the Manix 2 can handle plenty of abuse. Nothing flimsy about that knife.
      So much of this is personal preference and experience though 🤷‍♂️.
      Thanks for the comment ✌️
