  • Finally made the trek up to Tahoe and rode the famous Saxon Creek AKA Mr.Toads Wild Ride trail. It was definitely one of the hardest trails I've ever ridden, many double black features on this trail and certain spots are send it or walk...Choose wisely! the hardest features on Mr.Toads are in the beginning, lots of gnarly chunk that eventually opens up into some really good flow! The two climbs i did, Grass Lake Spur and Tucker flat were humbling. Steep, technical and over 8,000 feet of elevation. By far the most technical climb I've ever attempted. This was the first time I ever rode these trails, it was one of the best rides I've ever been on. As hard and punishing as these trails were, it was worth every damn second. I'll definitely be returning! Now get outside and ride your damn bike!

Nice ride, Toad’s is a nice blend of rocky tech and single track flow. That dg likes causing washouts. I might have to hit that trail before the end of the season.

That is one of the most brutal "trails" I have ever seen. Thats not even a trail, its a suggestion line. Looks like it rewarded you well near the bottom.

Hey man, I've been watching your videos to scout out Annadel. If you like Rough Go you'll really enjoy chunk down in San Luis Obispo, it would be really cool to see a video down here! Great content

Nice video! I’m often in Reno/Tahoe area but almost never do S. Tahoe trails because of the sandy trails. This one looks fun though, I’ll have to try early next year. Looks like Winter is here in Tahoe this weekend.

Hello Jake. I moved to area in 2020. I considered myself an above average MBer (raced XC for 11 years and transitioned to Enduro) and could not wait to ride Tahoe. I came from sea level riding from coastal Cali, and HUMBLED is the right term. They first time I rode at elevation it kicked my ass, LOL. Took a solid 8 months to get acclimated to elevated cardio. Another aspect is this terrain is so technical and with natural features seemingly at every turn that over the last 2 plus years my riding skills have increased so much! I have not done toads yet, but have ridden some epic rides in South Lake, Mt Rose, TRT loops etc. The more you ride at elevation and this terrain, it will translate huge to your local trails. I went and rode my old stomping grounds 2 weeks ago at Ft Ord national and felt I could ride forever. We should hook up sometime next year and ride! But, I will be 53 so don't; hurt me too bad...LOL. Awesome video. PS I too have a Hightower C (2019) for the chunk. Just an observation, looks like your front travel was not being used too much. When I moved here and over the last few months I actually have lowered my air pressure on front FOX in order to use more of my travel for this terrain. I actually came across a RUclipsR suspension GURU who stated that factory air setting often are too conservative esp for bigger riders on chunky terrain. Im 6'4" and hover 200 in shape and what a difference it made customizing my suspension to my riding style and terrain rather them the factory recommend sticker specs. Just food for though. If I ride less gnarly terrain out of Tahoe, I just put some more PSI in when not using my XC bike.

It was definitely a tough ride but i felt like i did a pretty good job, all things considered. I did a suspension check right before i left everything was pretty dialed in for my liking. I run 25% sag in the front and 30% in the rear. I’m 5’9 150lbs, it’s always felt pretty good for me 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for the input though! Cheers

So was this a one way ride? A loop? An out n back?

There’s a couple ways to do it. I shuttled, my girlfriend dropped me off at Grass Lake Spur on Luther Pass Road and then picked me up at the Railroad Grade trailhead. I linked my Trailforks route in the description.

@Marshall Alexander have you ridden it before? I used to loop it by climbing Fountain Place + Armstrong Pass, up and over on the TRT then dropping Toads. Think it was something like 20 miles / 3,500 feet...
