  • This video is for anyone who is a beginner and new to benchtop or desktop CNC routers and project design. This video will walk you through step by step how to get started and design projects for your CNC router. You will also learn how to transfer g-code to your CNC router, among many other tips and tricks for the beginner.
This video is intended to help the beginner avoid bad cuts, broken router bits, mistakes, and countless hours on RUclips trying to learn. This video will lead you to understand CNC router bits, saving g code setting up your cnc router, feeds and speeds.
You will get a lot of cnc router tips and tricks along the way. We will also cover the CNC control software, such as universal gcode sender and gsender. You will learn how to do a tool path and about profile toolpaths and cuts. and will know the difference between profile and pocket cuts.
We will be working in Vectric Vcarve desktop, pro and aspire but all applications work for all design software, like Easel, Carbide Crate, Fusion 360, Carveco, etc.

the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

I have been wood worker for years, I just ordered my first CNC machine, I haven't received it yet, but now is the time to learn. When you mentioned "brushing the router's teeth" I got a good chuckle. I learned that years ago. Nothing hurts worse than having a router bit work its way out and eat through an expensive exotic wood board. It has only ever happened to me once. May it never happen to anyone again!

The sizes of rectangle and the circle were smaller because the direction of the cutter was conventional milling. And the cutter deflected. In other words dig into the material slightly. As the cutter dulls it gets more drastic. If you would have been moving clockwise around the workpiece, that would be called “climb milling “ and the tool deflection would have resulted in the dimensions being a little bigger, or oversized rather than undersized. The glue in the manufactured material, is abrasive to the tool steel cutters. If you noticed that the rectangle was.007-.008 undersized and the circle was .014 undersized: that’s because the cutter deflected more on the circle as it was ran last due to the dulling of the cutter as the job progressed. Climb milling is the most accurate way to mill, as it protects the dimensions as any cuter wear will cause the cutter to push away from the material as opposed to digging into the material. This experience comes from 40 years of being a mill machinists. Now retired

Once you have a few projects under your belt you will be set to go to tackle Cabinets.

Very moving and emotional story Garrett, and I can relate ........................... I haven't watched the entire video yet ( only 12 minutes in ) I don't have a self destruct seed in my body, but life has a way of destroying ones self believe in society, life in general. With all the BS going on in the world and people being what they are ( very few good folk around these days! ) I chose a different approach to change things around, make me a better person as I didn't like what of was becoming. Part of the 'rat race'. Irritable and stressed-out all the time.
So I quit my job, sold my apartment and moved to a tiny village in central France! Away from all the mundane BS and a 9 to 5 job I could finally do what I wanted to do ................ and that is to make stuff ; ) I'm happiest when alone in my workshop tinkering. After many years of research, learning CAD/CAM/CNC and various materials I now have a viable product that people are screaming out for. I've finally given meaning to my life! ; )
    No doubt you have also

@@IDCWoodcraft Apologies for not getting back to you earlier Garrett .................... been busy watching your other videos! ; )
I've been very impressed by your 'mentoring' of Mark on how to successfully run a cnc business. I will comment on the appropriate videos in the series ( so far I've only got up to episode 4 ). I like Mark, and I can definitely understand where he' coming from, some parts are very emotional and I feel for him .............. such a heavy weight on his shoulders. I've only watched 3 in the series so far but already I can see what a transformation your guidance has made to him. He already seems to be a much happier man.
      Well done sir ; )
Unlike you guys machining wood into creative works of art, I work primarily with plastics, as I'm designing car headlights. I use my CNC machine for profiling the parts I vacuum form on my vacuum forming machine. If there's one thing that I've already taken from your 'Running a successful CNC business' series, is to have a 'niche' market and to know what your clients need or want. I was lucky that my 'niche' fell into my lap as it were, I got tired of having to buy garbage mass produced stuff ( usually Chinese or Taiwanese aftermarket headlights ) that were not as advertised, and to put it bluntly .............. downright dangerous when driving at night.
My goal, to design and manufacture a set of high quality hand made headlights for my targeted vehicle ( same as the vehicle I drive, a VW T4 Transporter - known as a EuroVan in the states and in Canada ). I joined all the T4 enthusiast forums available ( in the UK and in France ) from there my market research began. I posted images and wrote some articles ( of which I am still doing ) of my intentions, before I knew it I had over 20 orders! and I was still only at the concept stage!
It has grown immensely in the past couple of years, I have now accumulated over 200 orders!
People are now getting tired of cheap ( sometimes even over-priced ) Chinese tat, that only lasts a year or two, with 'built-in obsolescence' being a thing these days, it's about time we went back to creating high quality products that will last years and work reliably for years. There's no way a large manufacturer would even consider making a 'niche' quality hand built product, they're only interested in profits!
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I do like to talk about my custom made headlights ................. it's my passion ; )

@@t4concepts Hi Turk. That is quite a story and you have started to go about it the right way. Obviously!
Take a look at what you just wrote. Because you stated your avatars pain. Cheap stuff that doesn't last. Sometimes, Chinese made products are not always that bad. However, the perception is what you want to focus in on, which you are.
I'm very excited that you have found a niche that's in your passion. Keep researching your avatar, pay close attention to what they write in their posts. They always tell you what they like, or what they don't like. Either by pictures or the what they write.
From that, when you write posts, you use the same wording with the solution.
The more you do that, the faster your business will grow.
It might be a good idea, if you haven't already, to create a brand logo. Keep it simple and straightforward. Picture logos that are very simple stand out .

How good are these CNCs for manufacturing intricate things like fine teeth on a haircomb? Will the smaller bits hold out against hardwoords ? Thanks for the video btw!!

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  2 года назад +1

ADMA, fine elements like teeth on a haircomb can be cut, it isn't the machine that is the problem its finding out the best way to hold it down to prevent the wood from breaking! As the machine cuts, it puts force on the wood, and if your material is thin enough and long enough, it will probably break. For stuff like this a laser is probably your best bet. You can get a laser attachment for a CNC router too and have the best of both worlds.
As for the bit size and hardwoods, they love it! These carbide bits were originally designed way back in the day to cut steel, stainless steel and other hard metals. Hardwood to these bits is like a knife through butter!

"No one on their death bed ever said, I wish I spent more time at the office."
Thanks for another great video and sharing a part of your life story.
When I was younger, I too was working at a job I hated. I remember my legs
seemingly turning into lead as I walked up the stairs leading to the factory floor.
I finally made the decision to go back to school. It was the best decision I ever
made. After my electronics education I went from laboring in a factory to
working in the engineering department for a local electronics firm. Even though
it was a good job, I still had another yearning to do some creative and technical
writing. Finally, after I retired, I started writing and submitting manuscripts to a
few newspapers and electronics magazines. A long story short, and to my

5 minutes in already I see instructions full of assumptions of prior knowledge. In truth it's extremely hard for someone with preexisting expertise to return to 'beginner's mind' to that point where you know hypothetically NOTHING again.
Still lot's of good info here. I just don't see a step by step from know nothing to know something. Not even a discussion of what hardware/software package to select. Detailed instructions can be very specific to original hardware software and even then to specific models and software upgrades. An instruction that works in one software edition of one operating system may or may not work on another. So unnamed pitfalls abound.

Hi Doug. Thanks for your input. Great points. I'm definitely take this into account as I move forward. Cheers

@@IDCWoodcraft I'm not even at the start line, you might say. So maybe I'm not the best test case. I don't even know what my hardware or software will be yet. But once I'm further along I will definitely cone back to your videos as they do seem chock full of basic detail.
In my experience, all kinds of hidden pitfalls can arise on the software side. Slightly different edition and suddenly some command window has changed so now the old instructions don't work.
Once I chose my system I will look for tutoring on some totally proscribed system. Or, conversely, I will look for system that has lot's of YoutTube support.
That might be a suggestion: pick a very precise software/hardware combo and then go through setting up that very system step by step. Maybe you've already done that.
My project will be very simple parts with mostly simple rectangular cuts of narrow gauge wood and aluminum. Not looking to master CNC. Project is limited mass production for a modestly scaled home workshop output. Product itself is non-typical for CNC. Workshop space is quite limited but parts are very small at max 1" x 6" so some kind of desk top unit would work fine. I'm fairly experienced with CorelDraw 2D graphics so basic design not an issue, just the right program combo.

Tsonko, that is an odd one. Consider reaching out to Vectric, you might need to change something in your settings or do a software update.

Your board doesn’t look square to your pattern how would you make it square with your board

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  Год назад

Damien, it doesn't matter if the piece of wood you are using is square to the pattern you cut out.
If you really needed to, you would cut out a grid on your spoilboard and align it with that.

Thanks for this video. For me it has unlocked some of the mysteries of CNC's and wetted my appetite to learn more. As a woodworker in his 70's, who recognises the physical limitations that ageing imposes, this looks really interesting. I can see that a CNC CNC fosters creativity and opens up a range of possibilities for smaller projects. Your explanations are clear, detailed and precise. They bear the hallmarks of an excellent teacher. Over the past 8 years, You Tube content has given me the knowledge that has allowed me progress from a newbie woodworker to one that makes hardwood items of furniture that are of a saleable quality. I am grateful to everyone who has assisted me in that process. However, I have to say that your style of teaching and content are outstanding and facilitate rapid learning and confidence building. I look for to watching more content so that I can make an informed decision and perhaps progress to being a credible CNC user. So again a very big thank you.

Hi Mike. first of all, thank you for the compliments on my teaching style. Yes, I want this journey to be a joyful learning experience for those who venture into it.
You are right. there are so many possibilities in this little world of CNC. The imagination is really the only limit.
I would love to see some of the creations you have made over those years. Maybe you could send a couple pictures sometime. Do you currently have a CNC router, or are you just exploring the possibilities to expand your craft?

Hi Garret, I am using Easel Pro on my laptop with Microsoft 11. My biggest problem is when I carve a sign the letters in each word are always much too close together and it causes the wood in between letters to chip. It doesn't seem to matter if I use spiral bits or v groove bits. Is this a problem with the software or the computer I'm using or the way I am sizing the text? Can I change the spacing between letters in my computer software or is there another way to fix this? Thanks for your help.

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  2 года назад +1

Hi. Since I'm not an easel user, I don't know how to, or of, you can change letter spacing. You can in Vectric which is what I use and teach

Hello Garrett, yes I've asked you a few questions already from other videos, I wish this had been the first of them I've watched.
After my wife walked out after 16 years, I retired from the military, worked in a miserable job for the next 17 years, I found my self with the barrel of my 9mm Beretta in my mouth. Quit my miserable job , now ironically, carrying a weapon as an armed security officer for a major casino, dealing with jerks everyday, then last year one of my two daughters developed a brain tumor and passed 69 days later, only last year. I need a change in my life. I've always loved woodworking, at 65 I'm starting my own business, and purchasing, a CNC machine to help.
Placing my order for my machine on the 8 the of this month. I'm excited to do something for me, at age 64.
    Sorry for rambling.
I do have question, on your laptop computer, is the larger computer monitor above your CNC for convenience in addition to the laptop,
Thanks for your time, I wish you had been one of my councilors, and I'm still proud to own the same Beretta,
    THANK YOU

Hi Al. For some reason, this message just appeared in my comments. It says it was posted 2 months ago. I would have answered it then.
You've had quite a ride in life. And I do feel for you as I've experienced much of this type of stuff. Especially the brain tumor with your daughter...my experience was with my niece. She survived.
The big monitor is to see what is going on better, but is not necessary

Sir, I have seen many of your excellent videos and I do appreciate your effort to teach newbes like me
Few questions I have are about being totally lost in the waste numbers of CNC bits versus parameters I do need to supply to my Vcarve software I am yet to install and explore.
If I do purchase a CNC bit I potentially think I need to use but I have no idea of the allowable spin and feed rate to enter to the software and the SKU part numbers are not reflective as being relevant to a particular manufacturer only.
So the 1st question I have is how should I address spin/feed rate of the bits I would like to use or, is this just kind of learn as you go thing?
The 2nd question is possibly even more silly. Having yet to made the waste board I am faced with a dilema. My VFD controlled 1.5 KW spindle has a set of E16 collet sizes, hence it will not accept my 1/2" shank surfacing bit I own and have previously used. The E16 goes only up to 10mm shank. A google search results in only 1/4" and 1/2" surfacing bits which is about half way of what my collet is capable for.
Sir, what is your bast advice to this dilema?

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  2 года назад

      Jansb,
I would recommend getting a surfacing bit with a 1/4" collet for your machine. You don't have to purchase mine by any means but this is the one I sell: bit.ly/3Oyqw0k
As for the feeds and speeds, I have two ways to help you. You can import my tool database that has ALL the feeds and speeds for every IDC bit. Here is the link to that: ruclips.net/video/06qlncvzCbY/видео.html
If you want to use your bits, you can use my feeds and speeds table and try to cross reference the bits you have to the bits that I list. Here's the link: bit.ly/3xiLebv
