  • 3 Dangerous Ingredients to Avoid - Wallet Cutout Card: drbrg.co/3UuMMNd
Learn how to read nutrition labels and spot the top three ingredients to avoid.
0:00 Introduction: Which food is healthier?
    0:52 Nutrition facts
    2:43 Ultra-processed foods
5:03 How to read nutrition labels
    5:10 Top ingredients to avoid
Let’s compare the nutrition facts of Product A and Product B to see which food is healthier. Product A contains 29 grams of total fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 17 grams of carbohydrates, and 1 gram of sugar.
Product B contains 8 grams of total fat, 1 gram of saturated fat, 16 grams of carbohydrates, and 0 grams of sugar. Based on these nutrition facts, which food is healthier?
Product A is an avocado, and Product B is Doritos! Doritos contain corn, vegetable oil, maltodextrin, monosodium glutamate, dextrose, and many other poor ingredients-yet you may have thought Product B was the healthier food.
You can't rely on nutritional facts alone to determine whether a food is healthy; you must look at the ingredients.
Food is “that which is eaten to sustain life, provide energy, and promote the growth and repair of tissues.” Ultra-processed foods do not align with this definition! I believe that of everything that causes disease and destroys your health, ultra-processed foods are the most significant factor.
If you want to know which food is healthy, you should ignore nutrition facts and go right to the ingredients. Here are 3 ingredients you’ll want to avoid:
    1. Seed oils
    2. All forms of sugar
    3. Starches

What upsets me is even after you cut out junk food, processed food, now we are dealing with produce coated in Apeel or pesticides, produce grown with 75% less nutrients than their ancestors just 30 years ago, animals fed wheat and given medicines, PFAS in every single thing we eat, grow, drink and breathe, and now we have to fight foods that are grown in labs like cheese and meat! We can’t win!

Granted I do agree ingredients is a major factor but so are the nutrients. For instance, kale is a far healthier option than iceberg lettuce because there are far more nutrients.

It's truly amazing how invested you are in educating us to live better healthier lives Dr Berg. My grocery list has completely changed because of your advice. My approach to food and exercise and other things one would never even think about have completely changed.
My optometrist, dentist and general practitioner are impressed when I go for my check ups and my optometrist was so impressed with how my eyes improved after I implemented your advice that he cracked open a notebook and listened to ME giving him advice on eye health instead of the other way around. If it were not for you, I'd probably be overweight, wearing glasses and addicted to energy drinks but today I'm in the best shape I've been in for years.

Same here. Where I live, real organic food without all of the extra ultra processed ingredients is actually relatively affordable, so it was an easy change. I was getting really out of shape and had a belly, but after just 3 weeks of taking Dr. Berg's diet, I lost 20 lbs. and had more energy than I've had in years. I also checked out his video on weightlifting and have been doing the single set workouts once a week and now I have a 6-pack. People I work with have made comments to me about how I look great and how even my mental state has improved. Who knew eating right relieves stress, nervousness, and depression? well, I do now.

The companies merely tweaked the artificial coloring on a molecular level, and kept using them anyway. The chemicals add to shelf life; natural coloring does not.

Dr. Berg, I am so happy to hear you getting the word out about the horrid condition of our food supply. What we have is quite the trifecta of agriculture, food manufacturing, and medical/pharmaceuticals all profiting from our nutrition ignorance...
The other thing to avoid are "calories" to describe food energy... A calorie is a unit of heat as measured by a b*mb calorimeter and as you know, that's not how our bodies metabolize food... the whole idea of the energy balance concept (CICO) is a wrong-headed approach this and we need a better system... The Calorie has to go... I no longer use it or the term.

The few times I've tried it in the past over a year ago I could feel the grease coat my mouth, it felt so gross that after a couple of bites I threw it in the trash. I never felt the grease in my mouth before I changed my diet but I do now, stay the course you will get there. For example, I used to love chicken fried chicken and the gravy but when I eat out which isn't often, I'll have someone with me who'll order it, I have no desire for that crap anymore. Great information, thanks Doc! You mentioned MSG quickly at the end. I watched some videos and did some research and found out that natural MSG is quite all right, at least based on what I can see. I get the kind made from seaweed and people say that it should be used instead of salt for people trying to have lower sodium because it's only around 15% sodium. I also saw all the information dispelling the data that was going around about MSG headaches and hangovers from Chinese restaurants and it was completely disproven, at least to my satisfaction. Would love to get your take on it, thanks. But I see why you'd have it there cuz quite often it is an indicator of a poor product that they're trying to ramp the flavor up on

      @scottdanielson4816 Месяц назад

@edy3569 depends on where you're buying it. A nutritional label isn't necessary for steak, eggs, bananas, oranges, avocado, etc. It's one ingredient. They can have a barcode for ease of ringing it up or just put a price tag or price per pound....doesn't need an ingredient label too.

The nutritional facts do help. I think the difference in serving size (which you presumably blanked out) tell a big part of the story! For avocados vs Dorritos, look at the carb to fat ratio. The avocados have a much lower carb to fat ratio. At the same time, to your point, it doesn't say what kinds of fats these are! e.g. natural avocado fats, versus seed oils in the Dorritos.

Also, assuming your mentioning of honey and maple syrup is about the processed flavors and not the actual maple to honey from the source, correct?

I spoke with an MD, a doctor in the USA, who developed Lupus, and quit the practice of medicine. After she traveled to Italy, she was able to eat anything she wanted, and felt better than in this country.
Upon her return to the USA, she now advises people to stop using most pharmaceutical drugs that cause harm, and advocates eating organic and natural foods, and using natural products to heal.
The chemicals we are bombarded with have created major health issues, depleted our soil, contaminated our air and water....
It's important all of us to educate ourselves, and learn to become our own advocates.

"A" seemed obvious to me just by the label. "A" is more fatty but it isn't trans fat and fat is very healthy. "A" had less sodium, which is generally good. "A" had much more dietary fiber, which is very good. "A" had more protein, albeit slightly, but double "B". And "A" had much higher vitamin and mineral content. "A" seems like the obvious winner.
