  • A Utah nurse who was wrongfully arrested by a police officer just settled the case. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, tell you what she is doing with the money. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. Join TYT: goo.gl/v8E64M
“SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah nurse who was arrested for refusing to let a police officer draw blood from an unconscious patient settled Tuesday with Salt Lake City and the university that runs the hospital for $500,000.
Nurse Alex Wubbels and her lawyer, Karra Porter, announced the move nearly two months after they released police body-camera video showing Detective Jeff Payne handcuffing Wubbels. The footage drew widespread attention online amid the national debate about police use of force.
The settlement covers all possible defendants in a lawsuit, including individual police officers, university police and hospital security guards. The payout will be divided among the city and the University of Utah.
Wubbels plans to use part of the money to fund legal help for others trying to get similar body-camera video. She said that in cases like hers, video is essential to being heard and believed.”

As a medical professional myself. A Registered Nurse. She was so much more lenient than I. Taking his home, pension, cars, boat and his ice trays. The hospital security and anyone else involved in the arrest. We are supposed to be honorable in our duties. $500,000 is NOTHING to them. She was a lot more lenient than I. A multimillion dollar lawsuit against the city would be a great reminder to the police. Sue the hospital security and donate that money. Sue the hospital and donate that money. But not taking action against everyone involved , allows bad behavior to exist. It will be a little more expensive next time. But it will happen again. Ann R.N

    • @fordhouse8b

Yes, civilians who are convicted of a 'third strike' routinely get much harsher sentences than a first time offender. Presumably this is because they should have learned their lesson the first two times they were convicted. Surely a trained law enforcement officer should be expected to be just as aware of the severity of his crime as a third time civilian offender? The same failure to learn his lesson, that causes a person convicted of a third strike to go away for a much longer time, surely should be considered equivalent to the failure of a police officer to refrain from criminal conduct despite the many lessons taught at the police academy.

I guaranee you'd see a lot of reforms very quickly if the police were made to foot the bill for the consequences of their actions. Nothing influences people and institutions' behavior as much as affecting their bank accounts. "You broke it. You pay for it." (It's why fines can be very useful motivation!) :)

Right? Isnt that kidnapping and suppose her co workers noticing this obvious criminal act took measures to prevent it and had to subdue this man I know I would of stepped up. Too stupid to be trusted with the responsibility of his public position. After he arrested the nurse did he think he would arrest the next person in line all the way up the chain of command to the Supreme Court?

It's disturbing and hopefully one day the courts and citizens will join together and never put up with their brutality ever again. The cops should serve time like every other citizen, no matter which race was unjustifiably beaten or mistreated by these pigs.

So, I don't understand why, in cases like this, the officers involved aren't also charged for the criminal offences they knowingly committed, like planting evidence and assault. Those things happened, yet they're being swept under the rug as though a momentary settlement deleted the crimes. If that's an acceptable thing to do, no one with means would ever go to jail again.

I still think that we need to make these thugs pay out of their own pockets when they commit misdeeds like this. How about they be required to purchase personal liability protection from private insurers, like doctors and nurses have to, as a condition of employment. Let's see some of these repeat offenders, who aren't being disciplined by their departments, be able to afford to pay for their premiums after they get judgments against them. Or, maybe we whack their pension funds to pay for settlements. You'll see the police policing themselves in a hurry if all the cops have to take a hit in their accumulated pension fund when one of their own loses a lawsuit.

This is why ppl hate & mistrust cops!! ALL the cops NEED to be fired, charged & prevented from getting future jobs as cops in different cities, states etc. The thing that REALLY infuriates me is she could’ve lost her nursing license if she was charged. I’ve known a LOT of nurses & it isn’t just a job to them it’s a part of who they are.... it’s what they truly love to do!! She might’ve gotten her license back or just suspended or maybe nothing but potentially a huge mess to deal with. It’s takes YEARS to become a charge nurse & what 5-7 months to be a cop?! Oh & Alex was right the SECOND the pt. was given ANY medication the blood test would’ve been useless for what they wanted it for & by the time the cops were asking for it the pt. had prob. had several meds administered already. Please be safe everyone!!
