I work at Walmart and no one is arrested for 13 dollars. They would allow customer to pay. If she showed any signs of dementia they call Family. These folks need to be fired.
Thank god there's still some sanity and basic decency left in America. I'm watching from the UK where atleast here you can call the police and trust that they would make sure she got home safely. They'd even make her a cup of tea before leaving!
This is exactly what I was thinking the whole time. Not to take away from the brutality of the police response, but this could have all been prevented had the employees exercised some discretion and though, “hey, she’s offering to pay, let’s let her pay” and call it a day! Instead, no, they have to protect $13 profit for the gigantic multinational corporation 🤦♂️ thank you and your coworkers for having this clarity of mind, I wish those employees in this particular case had thought that way.
They need to be fired and sent to prison.

@@Flick14 Yeah I'm in the UK and used to work in Tesco when I was a bit younger. I caught a shoplifter, a large adult male shoplifting. He had a full deep bed trolley and tried to slip through a closed till with nobody operating it. He glanced around to see if he'd been spotted then sat down at the bench for about 30 seconds while I discreetly signalled a supervisor.
Then he got up and sidled toward the exit where my supervisor and security guard stopped him and took him to a side room. Lots of staff had been summoned as backup but none touched him. When the police arrived they weren't aggressive or bullying. Even after cctv and my own testimony they still handled this thief reasonably without force.
And yeah we had our own fair share of confused old folk but we never called the cops. Occasionally the paramedics were called when someone was confused beyond our ability to help. (Sometimes the managers would let us give them rides home or summon relatives.) Or they got injured but we never called the police.
I’m glad to hear that’s not common practice.
This breaks my heart. My mother suffered from dementia. This is beyond cruel. Walmart should be sued as well.

I work at walmart. Old people have forgotten to pay and have even forgotten to take their groceries with them, it just happens. This is nothing short of disgusting to see. Whoever called the police over $13 even after she tried to come back to pay is just human trash.

I imagine some manager was following some policy, without regard to what was really wrong.
I know a Walmart employee who lost her job by trying to help a customer, (who'd forgotten her cell phone, and asked her to keep it for her until she could return for it.) She violated a policy, (phone was supposed to go to store's lost and found--where it was likely to be stolen,) and was fired for it.
Everything these days is about following laws, rules, and policies, rather than helping each other. We've forgotten that the rules are a guideline--not a structure to beat people against. The rules are there to put us into little boxes, and keep us compliant.
I feel like Walmart should be sued as well. There was literally no loss of property, she tried to pay & then left. There was no reason to have even involved the cops.
Walmart is a ish company they don’t even care if their sued.

I worked with the elderly, in nursing homes. He clearly knows he is hurting the poor old lady. It makes me sick to my stomach. Then zero remorse for severely injuring her... just disgusting.

The callousness if the cops is unbelievable. My mother in law dislocated her shoulder and said it was the most painful experience of her life, worse than breaking a bone. She never got full mobility back either.

We do need to screen out sadists and the abusers from the police, but at this point that would leave us with maybe 10% of the force left if we fired all of the bad cops.

As a nurse, I would be mandated by Colorado law to report abuse, mental, physical, or financial, of a vulnerable elderly woman.
Yet a station house full of cops was evidently silent for months.

Did anyone notice how he laughed a little while she was struggling?
She never "WALKED OUT" of the Walmart. A store employee at Walmart stopped her in the Nursery department, still on the property and still in the store, no theft had taken place at that time! This seems to be a point that nobody is picking up on, and she did offer to pay for the items, Walmart would not accept the payment, probably because they knew her and her condition.
They still could have and should have accepted her payment. I saw a video from the store and she tried to exit via another door and was stopped. She wasn't trying to hide the items, so I don't think they could legitimately charge her with shoplifting. They in Walmart need better training, and the whole Loveland Police Dept. needs to clean house and start over.
I did pick up on that and researched the law because it seemed so crazy. Most states require a person to leave the store with the loot to be charged with theft. In Co. an individual could be charged with shoplifting even if they don't exit the store if they hide the crap they are trying to steal. Garner hid nothing. I think it's possible that whoever called the police did so out of malice knowing how Loveland police abused people.
@Some Guy I know she was very scared and on top of that was in a lot of pain because the cop dislocated her shoulder by deliberately putting her arm behind her back and pushing up. That's a trademark of Loveland police.
Hold on there. She was stopped by a worker at Wal Mart and she said she would pay but they said no and called the police. They should sue Wal Mart as well.

We all know that Walmart stops customers and checks receipts inside the store, though I have not heard that here; she tried to pay and gave back the items; if this was inside the store, and she never walked out the door with unpaid items, nothing was shoplifted. This cop should be charged and sued and fired. The 73 year old lady didn't leave the store with any items. Therefore she did not steal anything. The cop should and could have given her verbal warning but with low IQ conversing with citizens is not their prerogative. Do you notice that these idiots never take out their note books to take a statement. They don't even know how.
I saw this cop abusive video from North Carolina where the officer stop the black highly educated black guy a traffic stop for allegedly speeding. Pull his gun on the man and called for backup. When 2 officers showed up and told him to write the ticket it turned out he the cop didn't know how to use the computer. So all he ever did was arrest people. The black gentleman was an attorney who asked for his supervisor. The cop lied about everything but forgot he was wearing bodycam.

They stopped someone from leaving the store with unpaid merchandise and they called the cops. We don’t even know if the call was made out of concern for the woman’s safety when her mental impairment was noted but it doesn’t matter. Exactly this!! I was thinking just this. This started from the very beginning. The cops are obviously culpable, but some discretion on the part of the employees, resolving a NON-ISSUE before even getting the cops involved, could have prevented this. 🤦♂️

I am an RN. From the very beginning, it is drilled into us to keep fragile elderly patients safe (and ourselves) at all times no matter how heated the situation gets. This was crazy.

Yeah they teach that in healthcare but not police training. College should be a requirement for all cops who are on the street.
@@dirtabd not necessarily college, but certainly specific course work, psychological analysis and testing, more intensive training about dealing with the various populations not just so called hardened criminals. They need to know they are to protect not brutalize. They should make them carry a raw egg for a week like they do kids in school and record their every waking moment to see how they handle that. Make them do internship in emergency rooms, psych wards, and with social workers, teachers to see how to deal with people and recognize problems and how to use their heads to solve things. These people should never have gotten a badge.

She wasn't just held without medical treatment for six hours. They had her handcuffed behind her back, and to the bench for that entire six hours as she cried and complained about her pain. She could not change positions, or even scratch an itch, while sitting on a hard wooden bench. An 80lb Grandmother that is 73 yo. This should be said, this happened 10 months ago, and has been covered up.
Not only that, they proceeded to send her on to county jail for another 2 1/2 hours, lying on the accompanying docs that she had no injuries. They finally noticed there that something was wrong.
They both should have been fired on the spot. Their bosses could have watched it and seen what happened. If he tried to cover it up he should be fired too.
Randy, Do you live in the town where this happened? If so, do you know the family or the lady who was hurt so bad. So much more could be wrong with her shoulder and arm. Why did they leave her in cuffs after she was put in a cell?

Have you ever "popped" a shoulder? It is unbelievably painful, and after it happens once, it becomes a chronic problem afterward. My own dad needed major surgery to keep his shoulder from popping out during the night while sleeping.

Here's the problem that people blaming Walmart are having trouble understanding (and I get - you're mad - so am I - but Walmart had nothing to do with it.
They have SECURITY CAMERAS, that can't differentiate between a thief and a forgetful old lady.
They are not trained to tell if someone is acting, or really in Dementia.
Regardless, ONCE THE SECURITY CAMERA records someone walking out without paying, a security guard is required to confront them, get their identity, log the incident, fill out a report - and then report it to the police.
They have no discretion in this matter - what if someone was using her to steal things in other stores? Unlikely, but you see the dilemma.
They would be fired if they didn't follow these security procedures - and rightfully so.
The fact that they let her walk out of the store says volumes - they clearly did what they could, in the middle of a typical Walmart understaffed, busy day.
THE POLICE, dear angry people, are the ONLY ONES who are truly guilty, here, of crimes so egregious that they deserve prison time for what they did.
THE POLICE had the discretion to simply calla family member, and take her home - Walmart had already discharged their instructions, following company policy, and LET - HER - GO.
