Levon Helm, Keith Richards, Scotty Moore, D. J. Fontana & The Band: Deuce & A Quarter

- Keith talks about how great this session was in his new book! Recorded at Levon Helm's home in Woodstock, NY July 5-7, 1996 with Scotty Moore and D. J. Fontana joined by Garth Hudson, Levon, Rick Danko of The Band and many friends and family, (too many). Keith brought along his dad, Bert, so he could meet the man who made his son want to play the guitar - Scotty Moore. Stan Lynch, drummer of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, was on hand to keep the peace, except with Garth, and for producing the music. Someday the film will be completed of the making of the great, Grammy-nominated CD All the King's Men but for now I have the music and can show these stills which were shot for promotional use - so I am using them for promotional use only!
I feel a great sadness for the 66 people who didn't like this. There is so much joy in every picture and every note.
So true, these men are legends in their own time awesome hearing them have fun
I know right ....i get tired of the negativity....haters will hate .....i guess
Now 80.
I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was an accident. 82 out of five thousand couldn't find their glasses and clicked on the wrong thing.
The 66 are clueless. Let's play them the last waltz documentary.
Keith and Levon singing on the same song?!?!!?
This is the shit made in heaven, just listen to that swinging rhythm track ~ Magnificent.
Two of the coolest men in the buisness jamming together. R.I.P. Levon.
I would imagine that there was plenty of hell raising during this recording, lol.
Could you imagine a conversation bettwen scotty and keef ? A real rock&roll conversation, love this guys
Scotty Moore dj fontana levon and Keith doesn't get any better than this.
As a guy in my mid sixties, raised in southern Ontario Canada, and being a guitar player since I was 12 (first lessons were winter 68/69 - Ma paid for 12 lessons! On a God dam nylon string guitar. Oh well, it was a start. lol) - The Band were my Beatles. I ended up becoming quite friendly with their local members, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel (and his successor Richard Bell) and to a lesser degree, Robbie Robertson. I met Levon many times and the Hawk, too. I even made it to a “Ramble” in Levon’s barn, near Woodstock NY around 2001.
This was a golden up-load!
Thanks.
Awesome!!!
My first car was an Buick Electra 225. It was a great car. I'm 6'2" and I could lay down in the back seat with my knees only slightly bent. This song brings back great memories
By a huge stroke of luck of happening to be in the right place at the right time thanks to the kindness and generosity of world class engineer/composer/musician, Scott Petito, (pictured at the mixing board in this video), I had the pleasure and privilege of attending this recording session and after party! Thank you so much for posting this! I will never forget that special and historic night!
Wow !
What a treat I get chills just listening to these dudes You are one of the
chosen to not just listen but hear the truth Happy
Happy new year you lucky dog 🐶 ❤️
Wow your so lucky...I would have loved to have been there...knew Levon back in the day..with his smooth southern style.
@@zenzen1916; great story of great tunes being made, thanks for the contribution.
Levon and Keith sound so good together!!!
The pics of Keith and Scotty together show the mutual respect and shared spirit. They both backed the greatest front men of their respective eras - so they each know the stress and effort to make them look great.
Holy Hannah! Levon Helm and Keith Richards together and sharing vocals?!? Didn't know this was physically possible but I'm glad I ran across this. Two musicians who honor the genre of rock and roll and deliver virtually every time. Nice tune here...hope they collaborate again.
God I miss Levon! Keith keeps us oldies getting up every day and rocking on. ❤️❤️❤️
Out of the rolling stones,
Keith Richards still hasn't loss any of his Charisma, he's timeless :-)
Man this is classic rock and roll at its best ! Levon and Keef - are you kidding me ! LEGEND !
Its sad that so many critics of Keith have never understood him or great music . If you haven't heard or seen it check out Richards with Jerry Lee Lewis . Dick Clark put them together . For one of the greatest in all genre's of music history , Keith is best at being so humble. Very touching how he mixed with many Country artists that at first hated him, even one of his past best friends Bobby Keys . Rest in high volume Bobby 😎
Rick Danko is there as well. Love Rick. RIP.
If your feet aren't tapping then you don't like rock n roll. These are legends on this tune!!!
Notice when Keith appears in a picture everyone is smiling having a good time. A man from Dartford, England makes such a connection
with Americans and their music.
that's because despite all the fame, he is a fan himself
You rarely see Keith not smiling which me be the reason he's still around. Happy people live longer. It's been proven. Saw the Stones twice this past summer and everyone in attendance was smiling and having a good time.
That’s his magic. His joy and coolness are unmatched
Le
It simply doesn't get any better than this!!! If you don't like this...we can't be friends.
Otis Gibbs channel sent me here 🤟
This is why Keith and Levon are so beloved. They were the realist cats ever and the love of the music shone through. Priceless
Love, Love Levon’s music forever!!
Real legends.
Real music.
George Vreeland Hill
Hell to the fucking yeah! Just died and went to heaven hearing this! God Bless you Scotty Moore, RIP, brother man.
LEVON HELM,RICK DANKO and.... KEITH RICHARDS???.....I never knew this session existed the great SCOTTY MOORE jammed with them to, amazing, bless them all.
First I must say that if you did not give this the big thumbs upI don’t know how? It’s so cool that Keith is playing with Levon. Rick was just an incredible down to earth guy. And what an incredible talent. It’s so sad that we have lost so many incredible musicians. When you think about it there’s not that many left from the 60’s and 70’s. Music has changed so much. Groups like the Band and the stones who really honed there craft just don’t exist. Couple episodes of America has talent and that’s that. I’m really grateful I was able to experience those bands and times that they were out touring and making music.
When ELVIS first started,Scotty was the backbone of that band.
When I met my wife she drove a Deuce and a Quarter. Best ride of any vehicle that was ever on the road.
So glad we live in an age where all these great treasures can be shared. This must have been the best place in the world, on that day.
OH YEAH!
I love it that Keith Richards has so much respect for Scotty Moore It's great to go back now and listen to Scotty and James Burton and realize just how good they were and so ahead of their time Listening when I was a kid it was just good music never realizing how good they actually were Of course Keith's always been my favorite rock musician The only guy I know that made missing a tooth COOL BTW Thanks for the upload
Scottys so cool man
Looks like Keef RiffHard had a great time playing w SM, Levon & Rick! Love this!
Love the pictures, they really capture the atmosphere.
What a gem this is to find! Keith and Levon are two of my favorite singers!
I found this song through Otis Gibbs’ channel, and it’s just one more reason to love him.
Me too!
This band knows how to make a rock and roll song swing...lovely.
RIP Scotty Moore.!
Hi, I appreciate the comments. Keith's dad is the short elderly guy with the Scottish hat and moustache. He stayed up all night with us and enjoyed every minute. Burt also kept in touch with some of the people he met at the session. I was lucky enough to be his after-show babysitter on the Bridges To Babylon. I swear this is true - when Burt was at the shows he and Keith played scrabble every night until it was time for bed at around 3:00 AM. I consider myself blessed to know both of them.
WHAT great guys Keith dad
I somehow really needed to read this tonight. Thank you for sharing such a lovely memory. ❤️❤️❤️
What a great story! God what I would do to meet Keith Richards what a kind soul with a huge heart ❤️ I’d probably faint lol 😂
keith was always so underrated as a vocalist
What a fun song! Pictures are great. This must have been a long time ago because Keith looks so young. He was probably only about 80 years old in these pics. That cat is going to live forever!
One of the best guitar players ever RIP Scotty - never mind the shredders - this man was the best!!
Yea
YES!YES!👍
Man,THAT is FANTASTIC. SSOOO much about things l do not know. Thank YOU.FOR THIS EXCELLENT POST, WHAT A SONG.WHAT LYRICS.I LIVE IN MEMPHIS, FEEL AS IF I SHOULD HAVE BEEN BORN IN 1941,INSTEAD 1961,BUT AT LEAST I GOT HERE REMEMBER THINGS FROM THE OLD WORLD,YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE,.WOW,GOTTA LISTEN MORE. , Walter B.🎼🌟🎸💥💯👆💜
RIP, Scotty. Loved your sound. Brings back really old times!
He probably was the reason that most of them in the room are musicians. I know Keith, for sure.
Just love that Keith Richard, he has such a heart for those who came before him. After reading a book on the Beatles and Keith,s book Life. I would take K.R. over John and Paul any day.
God Bless Levon Helm. I hope you are happy man, wherever you are. Lots of GREAT players on this track. Man what a band!!! Clean, simple and ROCKIN!!!
You truly put it well, Mr. Hillbilly49!
he is still my favorite musician of all time Levon my fave singer ever. stay healthy and happy
@@Stewart1953 his voice is truly something that only comes around once in a generation. Keith's gravely 3pack a day voice goes well with levons.
Rick Danko is larger than life, it makes no difference.
Rick Danko is larger than life. It makes no difference
Who would not want to be that room rolling the spliffs?
And...Rick Danko was there! Sheeeeee it. RIP Rick Danko, a beautiful human.
Paul Thorn shared some of his art on Facebbok this morning, Feb. 18, 2022 he also had a fan point US to this fun page of History on RUclips! Counting the Joy with Jesus in focus today! Thanks for the Music all you crazy talented people for sharing your Joy with US through your music and songs over the years! Blessed!
I'm just NOW seeing this! Wow! A true gem, i'd love to see the documentary if it was ever finished. Seeing keith and scotty playing together just warms my heart
and Keith brought his Dad. This is Cool.
Kevin Gordon, who wrote this song, is a friend of mine. I am trying to imagine the rush that comes with having your song covered by such an august assembly. If you are unfamiliar with Kevin, you owe it to yourself to search his other stuff here on RUclips, including his duet with Lucinda Williams. He's an amazing, yet sadly little known, talent.
YES! I discovered Kevin Gordon after coming across this song, and boy am I glad I did. Fantastic artist. Every song on "Down to the Well" is great.
Down to the Well is a great record.
Will do !
Hes on otis gibbs channel telling the story of writing the song and shopping it to keith
Keith is rocking and rolling
Levon's voice and his playing was the best
Can you even imagine someone else singing 'his' songs?!
@@DoofsterDan Or, as Levon himself would put it, "sangin' 'his' songs". Like Hank Williams, Levon's greatest gift was he sang exactly the same way he talked. When Levon sang, it was with a sincerity that made the listener want to trust him completely. As a musician, Levon let no one down.
Big Keith/Levon fan!
1st time I heard this...
F...Ahhh
OH MY GOD keith and levon singing on the same song.... I AM GOING TO EXPLODE
Who in Gods creation would give this a thumbs down. I hope, for humanity sake, those are bots
Wow..how did I just find this..great cover of this tune!
Killer. One of the greatest (and least heard) recording sessions around. Thank you for posting.
When this was played on TV in Finland and I just had to look it up so I won’t forget it. I sent the link to my buddy who plays records in the national league ice hockey games and suggested him to include this great tune. It just makes you feel good. Thank you Dan for sharing this piece of art.
Keith kept himself together, like a thumb print, he is one of a kind.
This song has been one of my favorites since first hearing it years ago- instant classic in my world! Great song writing and performed by all the best!
Keith sounds great singing these kinds of songs.
What a joyous, rockin' little number! Sheer pleasure, even though some of my favourite people are no longer with us, this track along with all the other great music they made stands in testimony to their talent and love for the craft, the art, and each other. ✌😘🎶🎹🎸🎷🔥💞
Great! All legends..And Keith doing some fine vocals as well. Excellent!!
What a record!
Levon!
Scotty and Levon: 2 greats. Much missed!
That’s what we call good old boys down south ! Tennessee
They call it rock and roll. Wicked.
Hey Duane, sure I know Kevin. When I was putting the record together I couldn't get Keith or Levon to come up with any ideas for an unrecorded song, so I called Kevin and Gwil Owen. they had written a couple of great songs for Sonny Burgess' Rounder Record so I asked them if they had a song that kinda mixed Exile On Main Street with Music From Big Pink. They said they didn't but they would write one! This is the great song they came up with and Keith, Levon and Scotty made it their own.
that has to be one of the cleverest lines ever - but one of those guys must've heard it somewhere - I'd love to get to the roots of that phrase "...a Deuce & a Quarter....ain't no Cadillac." Beyond classic.
I recently finished reading Levon's book and am almost through reading Keith's book, so you can imagine what a thrill it is for me to watch this video. Have always been a Scotty Moore fan too. I have been to Woodstock, NY many times so I'm very familiar with the vibe that place has. Thanks for sharing this with everyone..
Thanks for the comment. I was around for the last few weeks of Richard's life also. It is hard to believe those three amazing voices are all gone
Happy Celestial Birthday, Scotty Moore: Winfield Scott Moore III (Dec. 27, 1931 - June 28, 2016)
This was amazing! Love to see everyone, especially Rick Danko!
I hope Lord Jesus Bless all these peoples. Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord...
What a treasure! I looked up this recording because I just listened to to writer of the song tell the story of how it was recorded. Thank you for sharing this.
So did I. Over at Otis Gibb’s channel.
@@tomcoffin393 Ditto...
same….
Same!
Yup
An absolute treasure!
Keith outlives'em all. Amazing.
Someone had a great post recently - young people need to think about what kind of world they'll be leaving for Willie Nelson and Keith Richards.
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it. I have some incredible film footage from the three day sessions at Levons and have been working on a documentary about them for a while but have ran out of money to finish it. I am going to do some fundraising in the new year and hope to have it ready by August.
Dan
Hi Dan, did you ever get to finish the film? Best Regards Kristian
@@kristiannissen6366 no
Should get a Gofundme for this if it’s still needing money for completion.
Come on Dan - 8 years have passed
@dan I'll help you put together a fundraising campaign
Thanks for this great sound
💘 love Levon always and Keith of course Levon is in heaven making the angels dance God bless
Best cut from album. Fast country with some Elvis overtones. Nice photos.
Best part- Robbie Robertson is no where to be found in these beautiful pictures. RIP Levon Helm and Rick Danko.
Well said, I take it that meant none of these fellas got shafted.
thanx, that was great!!!!
this the very best thing ever I say no more!!!!!!!! XXXXRic
You can easily see where George Harrison and Keith Richards got a jump start kick in the ass by the great Scotty Moore.
🤔.....love listening..watching this when I'm down...they all seem so happy🌞🎶🌝 remember making Levon laugh 'till he cried...
ONE BY ONE WE LOSE THE GREAT LEGENDS
It's sad
great RIP Rick and Levon
Incredible session -- Elvis' musicians play with The Band's Danko, Hudson, and Helm, the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards. Years earlier Elvis' later drummer Ronnie Tutt played with The Grateful Dead, and bassist Jerry Scheff recorded with The Doors. Lead guitarist James Burton and Tutt played with several modern rock musicians during Roy Orbison's Black and White Night. Many are gone now -- but it was a great time. RIP Scotty and DJ Fontana, Rick Danko and Levon.
It's really cool seeing Keith's dad there.
I Love this ❤️
RIP Scotty Moore, the man who helped liberated the western world.
Well said!
he used a weapon of mass CONSTRUCTION
So glad you liked it. This was one of those magic nights that can't be planned but just happens.
Yeah.foumd this about a year or so ago.Best song think k have ever heard.Would have loved to have been there.Dan,how on earth do You,write a song thus great.man AWESOME.!! Thank you.for posting this.Sat on rhe shelf for so long Unbelievable. What a band.l had died and gone. Ha.Somewhere.🎶🔥💥💯🥂🎇😎
Very good song
This is honestly like my dream band right here! Wow
Scotty's early contributions to Elvis' Sun recordings are legendary. His innovative and inspirational licks will go down in history. I never tire of listening to his guitar work and he was the template for many of today's guitar legends. The 1968 NBC TV Special showed him in great form alongside Elvis. I will never forget him.
R.I.P. Scotty.
Some of his riffs and their tone bordered on the psychedelic, way b4 his time. Took the rest 10 yrs 2 catch up.
I have probably the only copy on the planet of "The Guitar That Changed The World "
@@frankdavey2655 I just finished listening to it!! Found it on RUclips which brought me here. Great record!!
Nothing but nothing sounds like Scotty Moore. Genius!
wow first time i've heard this..blow me away !..thanks for the heads up
My first cousin Dan Griffin produced this film. Sure do miss Dan, he was a great guy. May he RIP.
I want the film! What's the name??? I heard this one cut but can't find the acual "Video" for this song@!!
Is he the same one that uploaded this video? I’ve seen some comments from him and his name is Dan.
Apparently the Dan he mentions is the channel owner. The last video uploaded and his last comment here were both 10 years ago.
@@trekfortruth2841 that’s what I was thinking. I hate to hear that. RIP
What a lineup. Damn.
This is great.
On a good day, Keith can sing.
Not anymore but what he lacks in vocal perfection he more than makes up for in heart and enthusiasm. Bit of a shame he destroyed his voice with cigarettes I used to love to hear him sing.
