  • If you want to create a bootable Windows 10 USB in Ubuntu or other Linux distributions, the procedure is dead simple.
In an earlier tutorial, I used WoeUSB to create the bootable Windows USB: • How to Make a Bootable...
The problem is that WoeUSB is not available in all Linux versions and the software crashed for several users.
So, this time, I am showing you the method that doesn't require WoeUSB or any additional software at least in Ubuntu Linux.
You can read the text version of this tutorial here: itsfoss.com/bo...
I'll brief the process anyway. Here are the steps:
Step 1: Download Windows 10 ISO file. Here's the link to the official website: www.microsoft....
Step 2: Insert a USB disk (of capacity equal or more than 8 GB) and format it to Windows compatible format like FAT (recommended) or NTFS.
Step 3: Mount the Windows 10 ISO and copy its content and paste it to the USB disk. Once the files are copied, your bootable Windows 10 disk is ready.
To use the bootable Windows USB, plug it in the computer and restart/power on the system. Now at the boot time, press F10/F12 to go into the boot settings and choose to boot from the USB/Removable media. Once you do that, you should see that the Windows giving you the option to install it or repair the system.
Congratulations! Your bootable Windows 10 USB is working fine. Let me know in the comments if this method worked for you or not.

Firstly, WoeUSB worked for me! I had to select NTFS because I got a size-related error when FAT was selected (Windows 10 iso content is greater than 5GBs). Secondly when I initially tried your method above, selecting FAT did not work because of the iso size, and NTFS did not work, so i selected exFat from the "other" menu (had to install dependencies first: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install exfat-utils). However, when I booted from the flashdrive, all I got was a black screen with a blinking cursor. Anyway, WoeUSB worked great. I don't know why your method did not work with NTFS because selecting NTFS with WoeUSB worked great. Thanks for your video. It helped me alot.

I swear to god I go through this process once a year because I inevitably lose this install drive and get on my backup linux laptop running antix and get these lovely reminders about how install.wim is too mf big for fat32 and blah blah blahhhhhhh. Do this:
Use gparted, unmount, format partition to ntfs, right click partition, manage flags, check boot, click ok, (edit: don't forget to apply the changes by going to edit>apply all operations), browse to the mnt/windows10 folder you made, remove the drive and put it back in, copy all files from mnt/windows10 to the folder that pops up, hate yourself for taking way too long to do this.

this also will not work for the firmware on most motherboards. The UEFI spec does not include support for NTFS, so a custom uefi loader is required.
The simplest solution would be for Microsoft to just provide a disk image that makes sense for thumbdrives and follow the uefi standard rather than being intentionally obtuse.

I faced the same situation. Some say that when you see the blank page with cursor, you just have to wait for 10-20 minutes and then it will work. It worked for many. So give it a try. I waited for like an hour but nothing happened. After that when I desperately searching for the answer I found one which worked for me. Firstly you have to download Windows media creation tool. So just type in Google "Windows 10 iso file download" and then enter into the Microsoft site. If you are browsing in Ubuntu it shows direct iso file download type. So here you have to use someone else's system which has Windows OS. There when you go to that Microsoft site download Windows media creation tool. After downloading open it and it will download the necessary files. Insert your flashdrive and select it in the app, it will finish the process. Use this flash drive in your system in which you wanted to install Windows. This worked for me. Hope it works for you too. Let me know if you face any more issues

That does not work, the files cannot be copied because Microsoft used a file that is too big for fat32, exFAT wasn't recognized ad bootable, Linux won't mount NTFS, and Windows can't read ext4.

yeah there are several corner cases that will prevent this from working. a custom uefi loader is required to boot from NTFS on most machines, and recent windows isos contain an install.wim too large for fat32. So its actually mandatory to use a tool that contains a custom uefi loader for most people with a recent windows disk image and normal firmware.

The very unfamous but effective way is to boot win98 using fat32 formating system and create partition as you like and intalling win98. Then using NTFS boot system and upgrade to windows 10 or 11 or whatever.... it always works and not many people knows it

I had problems getting WoeUSB to install onto Linux Mint 18.3 xfce so I tried using VMWare Player & virtualised Windows 10 to make Windows 10 install usb. I just used the media creation tool on the MS W10 download page. It worked flawlessly, & I made a second usb to be sure. Both usbs boot perfectly into the Windows 10 setup. To avoid any disasters I suggest unplugging any external hard drives before doing this in case you choose the wrong usb device! While VMWare player installed perfectly on my Linux Mint 18.3 I have had problems getting VMWare Player to work on recent Ubuntu distros. However, I was amazed at how effortlessly this method worked to make a bootable W10 usb. So anyway I hope this may help someone.

    • @brentsummers7377
      @brentsummers7377 4 года назад

Just to add that I had tried the method in this FOSS Linux Blog tutorial & for some reason it didn't work so I decided to give the VMWare Player method a shot! (Yet another option & not needing VMWare Player at all, would be to download the Windows 10 32 bit version which is smaller & can be burned to a DVD. Then install W10 32 bit version. Then go back to the W10 download page & use the media creation tool to get the W10 64 bit version onto a usb. Finally install W10 64 bit version.)

This won't work. The file install.wim in the sources directory is more than 4gb which is above fat32 limitations. You need to use a utility called wimlib to split the file into chunks ta make it work.

Have your tried prioritizing your boot menu ?
You have to press f2, f8, f12 or delete key (whichever works depends on laptop models)
and go to the boot options, I assume you can change the values with f5/f6 prioritize the menu, save and restart
