    My biggest problem is this was called in by someone watching at home and it was one of the unmarked bunkers. I know the rule to play them all as hazards but if it doesn't even resemble a bunker, is unmarked, and the penalty is called in from someone at home who contacted the network who then contacted an official it shouldn't be a penalty at that point.

    This is the anal part of golf that makes it ridiculed. No other sport has varying rules like this. If this is a playing field, people shouldn't be allowed to "Stand in the bunkers". Oh, today, it's dirt....tomorrow it'll be a bunker. Bogus.

    • @95bochamp
      @95bochamp 6 лет назад +2

      No, not really. It's the nature of this particular course. If the organizers kept the spectators 'behind' these areas, then they would be too far away to see anything. Besides, the players were reminded in writing that they should be aware that the bunkers were in play and had to be played as hazards.

    • @petey_the_toast5295
      @petey_the_toast5295 6 лет назад +14

      its worth pointing out that a fan at home called this penalty in. Not one official on the course called it out, even though you can clearly see at least one standing right next to him, looking directly at the "bunker" while he shoots. In other sports, referee mistakes are part of the game. Baseball, football, soccer, basketball, hockey, even fucking curling don't have fans call in while the event is still happening and get the play changed. Bullshit way to lose.

      In golf when you hit from a bunker you can take practice swings, as long as you don’t “ground the club”, which means you can’t touch the ground with your club prior to the shot (because the sand is soft and touching the ground near the ball may affect the current lie of the ball). Dustin didn’t know that where he was hitting from was considered a bunker because of how far away it was and from the fact that there wasn’t really much sand at all, so his club touched the ground. This resulted in the two stroke penalty. Dumb ruling because of a confusing course

      A better explanation is that the course is designed with large 'waste areas' of sand and sparse grasses, but the tournament organizers designated these areas to be played as hazards throughout the course. The fact that spectators were allowed to stand in these areas is no different than when they stand in the rough next to more conventional courses. There was a notice given to the players reminding them that the waste areas, including where spectators had walked, were considered to be bunkers (which are hazards that have rules against grounding the club in most circumstances).

What I've pieced together is that you're not allowed to touch your club to the ground before your real swing, which is called 'grounding' your club. So the penalty was related to him 'grounding' the club, where it looked like he moved a twig, before he took his shot

    Imagine if you're first in the tournament, and you either win or end up second if DJ will or will not be given the deserved penalty.

    Surely you cannot have hazards in areas where fans stand and eat and sit and lie and drink in for four days straight, hazards that you then have to play from by the way. Basically it would be the same as allowing crowds to stand in greenside bunkers. then when your ball lands into somebody footprint in the sand you have to play it as it lies.

      The topography of this particular course was unusual, especially the number of bunkers and where they were located. It was not practical to keep spectators away from those areas, therefore the notice was given to all players prior to the event regarding how these areas should be played.
