      Jack Timson Yeah, but I always thought of 40k as its own style as it can’t be summed up by simply saying/labeling it as diesel punk, as it has numerous races and factions with different aesthetics and they have been moving more to a more modern aesthetic for the Imperium and other armies since 6-7th ed. (for example the post Gathering Storm units: Grav-tanks, new dreads, new Forgebane models like the Glaive)

      Like Venice, Poland in this era styled itself “The Most Serene Republic,” and though it limited the franchise to the szlachta (hereditary nobility including aristocracy, magnates, and even knights poorer than peasants), this group numbered fully ten percent of the total population, a proportion greater than any other country in the world at that time. A free man (szlachic) according to one proverb regarded himself as “equal to the voivode (military leader approximately equal to duke or prince).

    well, Saxony is called Sachsen in german, whereas Saxons are called Sachsen aswell, only Saxon would differ as being called Sachse.
    So if you literally translate Saxony Empire, it would be called Sachsen Kaiserreich, or more likely Sachsen Reich, which would most likely be interpreted as "Empire of Saxons", while fitting the literal translation of Saxony Empire in english.

    • @MChannel80
      @MChannel80 4 года назад +6

      rather than "Sachsen Kaiserreich", I think an adjective would be chosen for the original German name.
      "Sachsen Reich", or perhaps "Sachsenreich" seems to work out, but does arguably not sound as glorious as you would like your Empire to be called - especially after a German unification.

    • @evanbradley6169

      Maybe Rusviet is a colloquial name for it, similar to how gulag comes from "glavnoye upravleniye lagerej" perhaps in this timeline the other republics of the USSR went their own ways and "rusviet" simply means "Russian Soviet"

    • @lvkeyne
      @lvkeyne 6 лет назад +16

      Well, Gulag is a sorta-kinda proper abbreviation (g. u. lag.) as they were extremely (and maybe laughably) popular at the time. And Rusviet is a portmanteau akin to Carrol's "mimsy" and "mome".

      To answer to your question about the presence of France within this universe, the board-game Scythe fleshes out some additionnal factions of the 1920+ universe :
      - the Saxony Empire => focus on military dominance and mining power
      - the Polonia Republic => focus on diplomacy and mobility
      - the Rusviet Union => focus on manpower and industry
      - the Crimean Khanate => a reference to the actual Crimean Khanate, which in our world disappeared during the 18th century ; this is a faction which uses a mix of guerilla tactics and nomadic-styled warfare, but with wheeled mechs
      - the Nordic Kingdoms => a sort of union of interest between the Scandinavian powers, with an intense focus on water-control
      - the Togawa Shogunate => so, the "Tokugawa shogunate", which has fallen during the Boshin war in the 1860's, has survived here ; in the board-game, the expeditionary force sent by the shogunate is made of the worst thieves, dishonored warriors and agents you can think of, and they use ambush tactics, traps... and badass mechs, to advance their interests
      - the Clan Albion => a version of the United Kindom where the Celtic culture is much more predominant than in our world ; focused on coordinated manoeuvers and spreading its influence across the map ; also, the Albion clan doesn't seem to be of much power in this universe compared to the SE or the RU
      Unfortunately, there is no sign of a French/Latin-styled faction yet in this universe yet.
      If you want to see the design of each faction, here are some links :

      That is not the definition of a republic though. A republic has a leader which is not a hereditary monarch and politics are a public matter (Res Publica). Look at most historical republics before the nineteenth century and they are all very exclusive in who has the right to elect. Venice also elected the Doge from nobility, yet it was still a republic. The Roman Republic is probably the Ur Example for this, it was by no means a democracy.
      The Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth did call itself a republic, the Latin name they gave it was Serenissima *Res Publica* Poloniae

    We all have those videos, that make you click it an instant you see it, and write something like "never clicked out of porn hub so fast" and similar.
    This was mine such video. I fell in love with the works of Jakub Rozalski well before the Kickstarter campaign for the board game The Scythe even started. And I'm very happy to see, that it becomes more and more popular and gets different adaptations - first the board game, now an RTS PC game.
    And I was just astonished when I saw your video on the subject. This channel fills the content niche that was just begging to be covered, and you did well. And the video is great, on point, and about errors and stuff - well, why not, you backed them up quite well. And I completely agree about the factions in RTS games - Nod, GLA, or Yuri's faction found the place in my heart a long time ago and are still there till this day because of those reasons you stated - they were engaging, well though out and they felt real.
    Kane lives in death, brothers.

    There's definitely a more or less subtle timeline split that goes back quite a while, unless there was a massive surge in interest for viking age Scandinavia some time prior to the great war. The symbol of the Nordic Kingdoms is the hammer of Thor, which makes the timesplit kinda obvious, and depictions of it's soldiers also show very clear hammer pendants hanging from belts and necks, not to mention helmets which are clearly inspired by viking age helmets. Also their coins have runes on them.

    worlduilding is, after all a huge part of the design of your world and shapes your factions and gives a reason why they fight the way they do, and how they are fighting, which in turn influences you gameplay. I really love this level of worldbuilding.

    • @kapitankapital6580

      The hammer and sickle was originally a Soviet invention (which is why you don't see it on the flag of any other communist country) and it signifies the alliance of the workers and peasants. The red star in socialist iconography represents the communist party, which is why the star is above the hammer and sickle on Soviet imagery, because the party leads the alliance of workers and peasants. Communist parties in the West tend not to use the sickle because we obviously don't have any peasants in our countries.

    • @TheArklyte
      @TheArklyte 6 лет назад +5

      not exactly. Farmers aren't interested in supporting communists in western countries. Well, weren't...

    • @kapitankapital6580
      @kapitankapital6580 6 лет назад +5

      TheArklyte Bear in mind that the sickle represents specifically the peasants, not just any farmer. To understand this you have to have at least a rudimentary understanding of Marxist theory, but essentially it goes like this, people in Western countries who worked on the land were either wage workers, that is they were hired hands employed on the farms, in which case they are working class just like anybody working in a factory or office, while those who owned the farms on which they worked were capitalists, like the owner of a factory or an office. As such, these workers are represented by the hammer, even if the nature of their work doesn't involve hammers. Peasants, on the other hand, are a separate economic class to workers, and while traditional Marxist thinking places the emphasis on the working class, the Bolsheviks brought in the idea that the working class and the peasants can work together to bring about socialism.

    • @TheArklyte
      @TheArklyte 6 лет назад +2

      Patrick Ellis
      which was a populism, nothing more. Necessary for survival, but still just populism. There was no way to build socialism back then, even now it is nigh impossible in pure form.
      Peasants are a rudiment by 20th that needed to naturally die out. It speaks volumes of how badly f//cked was Russia back then, but peasants can't help build socialism since their existence is a contrary to it. The same can be said about non-specialist workers, lowest chains of "blue collars". Funnily enough, there is no usual term or place for specialists in this clothes color segregation that is used today:D Shows a lot how modern society falsely beliefs that it is white collar managers, who support it's existence, instead of engineers, doctors and so on.

    Rusviet name/emblem analysis is spot on! Red is the vexilological color for revolution, as (dark) blue is for bravery. Black/white fields usually refer to the willingness to ask and grant mercy - the white flag for surrender, or for a temporary pause to talk; the black flag to show a refusal of any mercies other than swift death. Also, the Russian use of abbreviation tends towards just initialisms (front parts of words), especially since it's so highly inflected (uses special endings to show grammar categories).

    i had a recommendation from the spacedock channel, then i swapped over and give it a try and i wasnt exited at all
    but then and old feeling popped out from the back of my brain. a feeling that i had as a younling sci-fi boy and that was the question "who are these guys at all?" it started with stargate and some other franchises, but mostly i had that feeling in the game Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm, Homeworld 2 and lately deserts of kharak.....i adress that here because i felt like your channel was to me like desserts of kharak. A journey back in time to find out who are the people we command or embody in our games.
    you gave me back that feelin after a few vids and you "reignited" the spark of discovering various sci-fi factions and how they came to be.
    for this i wanna thank you
    you brought back an old feeling that first was my driving point into sci-fi
    great content.

    the Martian Congressional Republic Navy or "MCRN" or mars republic in general (The Expanse)
    the Hiigara (or kharak were they originated from) (Homeworld Series)
    the cylon culture outside the BSG screen (Battlestar Galactica reboot)

    One possible reason for the confusing Russian iconography is if the original Soviets of 1917 were the ones who took power rather then the Bolsheviks. The original Soviets were mainly out for reform rather then outright control and worked with Kerensky and the provisional government until the Bolshevik faction gained control of the Soviets. Most likely change point is if Saxony did not send Lenin back from exile like the Germans did in our timeline. If the dual power structure stabilized you might end up with some sort of imperial socialist hybrid.

    +The Templin Institute I did a little bit of research, The Kingdom of Saxony existed up until 1918 as part of the German Confederation as a free state. After WWI it officially joined Germany as a state like we have in the US under a federal government. It's now known as the Free State of Saxony and if it were to become an Empire it would be the Saxony Empire as the empire belongs to the state of Saxony. It all depends on the meaning of the name of your country.

    First of all Great video.
    Second, I have a theory about Rusviet: I think that the country could be ruled by a coalition of SR (Social Revolutionaries), Mencheviks and the moderate branch of the Bolshiviks and that they choose to maintain the Tsar to appease the conservatives elements of the country.
    Third, The risk of a revolution could be because the coalition goverment haven´t implemented all the reforms at his full potential.
    And fourth, I don´t see a problem with the two hammers because mainstream Marxism never view the pesants as the main revolutionary agents, cause for mainstream Marxism the main agents of a revolution would be the workers. And in the video it is mention that Rusviet is an industrialized country, and in our timeline Rusia wasn´t fully industrialized until 1930´s
    At last I must say that I love the concept of this game and I must thank the Templin Institute for their videos.

    It's so novel to see an alternate history world in this era which actually shows the large part of society which has remained pre-industrial. Most fiction set in the interwar period, both alternate and actual history focuses almost solely on the sky scrapers, automobiles, aircraft, and factories as though the audience is supposed to expect pre-industrial life and be surprised with modernity. If anything, the workers in the fields are a back drop or a sidenote. When I see the world of 1920+ however, I find my eyes drawn just as much to the rural folk as the hulking machines. On a similar note, it's rare to see Eastern Europe at all unless the focus is on Russia which is really a shame. That part of the world is so laden with interesting culture and tradition. Even in Russia, we hardly see much other than peoples and cultures falling closer to those of Central Europe, and the Tatars, Cossacks, and Kazakhs just to name a couple, are sadly overlooked.

    Do you know what game this reminds me of? Valkyria Chronicles. That game is set in an alternate world with an equivalent of WW2. Every single character has personality traits, phobias, favoured terrain and similar things. The two main characters are from the small idyllic village of Bruhl, and the tutorial is set as it is being overrun by imperial troops. You get to learn about the rich history of Gallia, the motivations of the enemy generals and you grow attached to the setting.
    Likewise in VC, Gallia is stuck between two super powers and have to defend themselves with a small standing army and a conscripted militia against vastly superior forces.

    One series that is quite similar but more in a WW2 variety is Valkyria chronicles which has more a depiction of magic from the perspective of those who it's used against. The Valkyria are absolutely terrifying and they just feel wrong, cheap. Like it's just unfair their side has this kind of power. Though the lack of aircraft is really weird and never really adressed.
    But the nation of Gallia being a small nation between two superpowers does actually make sense. Both superpowers are at a low intensity conflict with a stagnant front line. There are occasional skirmishes and sometimes even a big battle but mostly the borders have been set. That is why despite it's size it can only deploy a small army to Gallia.

There was literally never a town or noble family in Saxony that Carrier a Wolf in its coating of arms. I'm guessing it's to make them look more evil but that's exactly why it doesn't make sense: wolfs are generally carry a negative conotation in heraldy and no sensible Country would seriously have one in their coat of arms.
