In the time from 00:39:00 to approx. 00:40:10, why use Wall Formation when controlling fighter-size craft...?
I always use claw formation when using attack craft, and X-Formation or other flexible formation when using corvettes.

      @spenceduggs 2 года назад +83

From what I remember, because of how limited the Kiith-Somtaaw's access was to the Motherships Manufacturing facilities, they had to take turns to build whatever pieces they could in the small amount of time they were given. As such, their ships were meant to be assembled from larger, more easily manufactured chunks (hence being able to build Support & Utility Modules to flesh out their capabilities)
The lower decks were one such chunk, so I'm sure they were able to just cut the ties that initially bound the two halves together.
In a small way, adapting to those initial limitations may have saved the galaxy.

Kiith-Somtaaw was given a very limited time of 45 days for the shipyards, they came up with 2 mining ships and a research vessel. FAAL-CORUM was the first ship built, during its building Kiith-Somtaaw decided they needed a flexible ship. While building FAAL-CORUM they were already redesigning KUN-LAAN to be completely modular by the time she hit the shipyard to be built.

@generalagondray the history for these guys were sadder. But they ended up teaching a lesson that would remain into the homeworld 2 and 3 campaign protocol. Mothership modules were added and independently built manufacturers helped them on missions away from any lost point or home.

@@michaelandreipalon359 It's kinda sad, considering the Kith Somtaav were "rewarded", so there's a belief that these Kith Councilors were never punished for their transgression, but actually promoted to leading
While i do understand their reasoning - the entire point is that it's POSSIBLE to study the beast under safe circumstances, and the Imperialist Taiidan proved it in their secret laboratory. This could probably been averted if they've given the module to someone more competent.
Alas, and again i state - the fate of the councilors uknown, assuming that they just "pushed the accident under the rug" like most politicians and claimed responsibility for destroying it.

It adds so much more depth but also sets the stage for how things are in the universe from the first game. The voices in HW1 were very militaristic; there was emotion but always very controlled and understated. Now, since we're essentially playing civilian miners, the designers went to great lengths to get that point across. It's seen a lot in the captain, who was expertly voiced with a ton of emotion in every line. Such a good game made with love and care that is rarely seen today.

From the perspective of a marketing executive, franchises have immediately-recognizable elements that must be frontloaded and represented (Star Wars has Storm Troopers, Darth Vader lookalikes and Star Destroyers, Fallout has the Brotherhood of Steel, Deathclaws and Super Mutants, etc.), otherwise it might not have the brand recognition.

36:29 - The barely contained terror in the voice of the engineer is top notch. Terror and confusion since he is not a scientist. When he got to tech specs hes got more confident at least.
1:25:42 - Man, I forgot about Faal-Corum encounter and my honest hope that they will make it. The feel of sistership and friendly souls on board that just does not have our experience and knowing that Caal-Chto was subverted somehow just added to the dread and hope. Loosing Caal-Chto was unfortunate, but they still were not that friendly to us. My heart would've sunk if I was Faal-Corum infected.
I LOVE the voice acting in this game. All of it. In the first homeworld and in the second VO is professional even when things are dire - gives you a correct impression that they were chosen among the best and the most stress resistant people they had at the time. But here people are not fighters at all, they are not military - they are civilian miners, with some tech to fend off some small pirate incursions to have mining operation continue according to needed quotas.

Iirc the lore is that the Somtaaw made it into a very versatile ship since that's pretty much what they were good at; the other one is the Faal-Corum, its older sibling.
Since the Somtaaw weren't originally a fighting caste, it only makes sense it's just a huge mining vessel.
What tipped it tho (imo) is the fact that the crew of the Kuun-lan was quick on their feet and able to adapt, while also being lucky. They were able to flee from worse fights that would've taken them down ( like the one with the Clee-San at the start ) They were able to pick fights and learn more about their enemy while other fleets (presumably) just got devoured, and they were eventually able to pick up that ancient cannon while also getting access the Bentusi schematics for the souped up Acolyte.

I love these because of the subtle voice acting perfect example if you listen to the captain was talking about the Beast you can actually hear his voice crack in some places like he's trying to compose himself he's either trying not to be sick or is trying not to cry I would say try not to cry because as a captain and what I've learned from the more most of those people were either part of this family or they've been working together for many years

Cataclysm (or Emergence thanks to Acti-Blizz) is probably my favorite entry of all Homeworld entries, I will probably keep repeating this vid every so often just to have the soundscape.
Kiith Somtaaw's story from being mundane religous miners turning into an full-fledged warrior Kiith is just so absolutely heartwarming, thanks to the horrors they fought in Cataclysm.
In my mind this is canon, it's just censored to hell just like how the Coalition on Kharak found that Taiidan carrier (you'd think during the mothership launch everyone was briefed on the Taiidan).
If we see Somtaaw again in HW3 I just hope everything in Cataclysm is confirmed canon. They do not need to bring back the beast but at least bring back these tired miners, finally getting the recognition they deserved ❤

@Upcycle Shoes screw the macross cannon, those starter guns it had? anything that was over the ship would get anihilated in rather a fast time for a "mining vessel"; one gun at the front, two on the back rear part of the engine, anything in the right angle getting hammered by those 3 guns would die, i always delayed upgrading to energy canons on the kuun lan for that matter

It's been 20 years since I played this or saw the cutscenes, and they are as good as I remembered, which is rare for old games. They made an excellent decision to eschew expensive prerendered cutscenes that wouldn't have aged well, and rather use basic artistic sketches and narration and the game engine for cutscenes, focusing more on excellent sound work, writing, and voice acting, because those have aged like fine wine.
I only wish they hadn't reused that betusi "we will not be bound!" death scream, as it's so well delivered that it burns into your brain, and you can't really use something like that multiple times or it just feels wrong. Other than that, it's all perfection.

I loved the multi-player matches back in the day. Lobbies used to be full of clans like X, Demon and I think there was also a Chicken clan. You used to be able to cheese with the mothership itself and somehow flip it to certain angles so more cannons would hit the opposing mothership. Also seige cannon rushes. Ramming frigates were a unique concept. Wall/Sphere formation spam. Mass multi beam frigates. Missle acolyte micro. Agh, it's all hard to remember but I wish I had replays to see what it was all about. This game was amazing.

This is my favorite game from saga so far. I love the first, second one was good but had little lackings. But this? This is the whole galaxy around, "I'll fix my errors or I'll die trying" story. The first one was an epic voyage about forgotten heritage and discovering who you are, almost a mythological legend. Cataclysm is more... personal... darker, grimmer. A bitter story full of uncertainty and little miracles. A story of standing against impossible darkness and surviving, even if it changes you. I always got chills when the Beast music kicked in.
