I found Home World by accident in the early 2000's. It was on sale cheap and I remember the pkg. saying "1999 Game of the Year". I didn't know what I had found. I wasn't a "Gamer", I'm still not truthfully, but I do game! Yeah, I remember spending 6 hours getting through one level. I remember starting the game after work on a Friday and watching the sun come up on Saturday, still playing. I got wrapped up in these games and it was awesome! I still love these games and just hope that 3 does justice to the franchise.

The music was so awesome, it sets the mood so perfectly.
Also the fact that the game was always setting up enemy strength relative to yours, so whether you built a lot of ships or not, you always had the perfect difficulty level.
This was especially cool when you modified the savegame (essentially just a JSON file) and gave yourself several Dreadnoughts, 100 Keepers (!) and Sajuuk - the enemy would just throw hundreds of ships at you in this case. Battles for the ages, still motivating even after playing through the missions several times.

When I found out that Homeworld 3 was in development, I was simply thrilled. When news came out that it might be released in 2024, I closed my eyes and remembered 'Adagio for Strings'. Some time later, a specific date of March 8, 2024, was announced, and then I glanced at the calendar and counted down the days until the end of 2023 so that psychological barrier was crossed. I felt a thrill of excitement. By the end of February 2024, I had watched and read all available materials, and my pre-ordered copy looked at me every time I started up the system. The excitement grew day by day, until anger appeared. Then I began to fall asleep listening to the soundtrack from Homeworld 2, because I remembered it always calmed me down. In the meantime, slowly and meticulously, I am once again in the middle of this beautiful story, enjoying the Remaster.
As I send this message into the void of the universe, the meeting with Imogen will take place in exactly 18 days, 8 hours, 4 minutes, 57 seconds. Should I propose to her right away, or should I invite her to dinner first?

The one thing I thought was silly is how the narrative changes from "the higaraans trekked across the galaxy to go back to their home" to "Karen S'jet is the most awesome thing in the universe and she led them by herself back to their homeworld" and it seems HW 3 is also deifying S'jet, as opposed to her people.

    1. Thanks for this, it was a blast watching the world of Homeworld play out. From the start where Rachel S'jet was sitting on that sand dune on Kharak all the way to Karan S'jet preverbally watching over the entire galaxy at the end of 2, was a real great Space Opera.
    2. I now understand why a lot of people are not that much of a fan of the plot of HW2 lol. The overall plot of HW2 feels like its from a different franchise and there are a lot of plot elements missing from the game that make me believe the game was rushed, an example being the Bentusi. Like, what do you mean "the last of the Bentusi"? Are they all dead? Was Bentus the last Bentusi in the galaxy while the rest fled to another due to The Beast? So many questions left unanswered.

I am a big fan of the original Homeworld and Cataclysm. And yes I dislike HW2 story line...
Not even trying to pick on the details, the first impression to me is that this is just a replay of HW1 with a strange remix of events. The whole feeling is basically that we start with a small journey, coming back to a shattered home, on journey to find something (Hiigara - Sajuuk), detour to figure out mysteries, then big ending. Many of the plot makes me feel I am playing HW1 just with a different set of objects.
Outside of story line, I find the HW2 system a worse mixture of HW1's plain and simple with Cataclysm's detailed and flexible. It makes things complicate, but without adding versatilities. I would just get rid of all the modules building, just to begin with.
The only thing I really like about HW2 is the upgrade in visuals.

Remember that Karan used data provided by Oracle to find a Dreadnaught in aft/shipyard section of the Progenitor Mothership, which some sections seemed operational like Lighthouse. Talking about Vaygr and Bentusi affairs, I don't think so. Bentusi saw Makaan rather as Hiigarans before Exile. Also Bentus were in debt to Karan for saving their unbound asses at Tenhauser Gates. Planet Killers imho rather are some sort of reverse engineered progenitor constructs (even with traces of Bentusi technology) or concept from both original games race T-MAT.

Lore dump incoming. (it’s not a Wiki copy-paste, I typed this from memory from the original Lore Book.)
The Hiigarans weren’t Warmongers, nor did they try to steal the Bentusi Core.
The Taiidan had Bribed, Cheated and Assassinated members of the Galactic Council into forcing the Hiigarans to forfeit dozens of their Outer Workds and Colonies, and enslaved any who refused to leave them, in addition to surrendering a 30 Lightyear exclusion zone along their entire Border with the Taiidan. The Hiigarans were powerless to stop them.
It was later that the Hiigarans found the second Far Jump Core, and built up their Navy around a new Flagship, the Sajuuk’s Wrath. With it they jumped their entire Fleet past the heavily fortified Exclusion Zone to strike the Taiidan Capital, where They defeated the Imperial Guard Fleet and bombarded the Imperial Palace. After which they returned directly to Hiigara.
They had hoped this would convince the Galactic Council to return the Hiigaran Worlds to them, but instead The Council Demanded that the Hiigaran immediately Dissarm their Navy and abandon their entire Fleet in the Exclusion Zone, and to surrender the Far Jump Core to the Council. The Hiigarans knew that disarming their Fleet would leave them completely defenseless against the Taiidan, who would eventually reorganize and demand Blood, and that Surrendering the Core to the Galactic Council would effectively be surrendering it to the Taiidan.
But the Hiigarans also did not want to wage war with the entire Galaxy, which is why they hatched a Plot.
The Bentusi were the most powerful force in the Galaxy, and the only other Race to have Far Jump technology, and the Hiigarans knew that the whole Galaxy, including themselves, looked up to them. So they claimed that they would Dissarm their Fleet, but they would only surrender their Core to the Bentusi. The Council, reluctantly, agreed. The Hiigarans hoped that they could catch the Bentusi by surprise m and by defeating their Harborship, they would show the Galactic Council that they were not to be trifled with.
The Bentusi were interested in the Hiigarans because they had long since hoped to find an Equal among the space faring Races, to be Guardians of Peace and Trade among the Galaxy. So when the Hiigarans found the second Core, the Bentusi had hoped they would rise to become their equal. But with this unfortunate incident, they knew the Hiigarans would not be able to rise above their current status. So they reluctantly agreed to take their core… But when the Hiigarans sprang their trap, they had severely underestimated the Bentusi’s technological and Naval Capabilities….
For Hours The Bentusi Pleaded for the Hiigarans to surrender, but out of blind desperation and unwilling to surrender to the rest of the Galaxy, the Hiigarans continued to fight, until every last ship has been destroyed….
The destruction of the entire Hiigaran Navy had scarred the Bentusi, and they swore they would never again bring their most powerful weapons to bear against a younger Race in Anger again… That is when the Taiidan Attacked.
For Weeks the Taiidan invaded Hiigaran Space, blinded by hateful Vengeance, and greedy to pluck all the Defenceless Hiigaran Worlds from the Stars for themselves.. one by one, hundreds of Hiigaran worlds and colonies were taken, or destroyed, their people either enslaved or Slaughtered. Even the Taiidan Controlled Galactic Council begged for them to stop, to show Mercy to the Hiigarans, and begged for the Bentusi to intervene..
But the Bentusi were still haunted by their own massacre of the Hiigaran Navy, and refused to bring arms to bear against the Taiidan.
After weeks of slaughter, the Taiidan were finally at the doorstep of the Hiigaran Homeworld. It was there that the Bentusi did eventually convince the Taiidan to spare the last surviving members of the Hiigaran people. The Taiidan offered them a choice. ‘Slavery, Death, or Exile.”
The many of Hiigarans chose Exile over Slavery, millions boarding hundreds of vast, sublight transport barges, and many of those whom remained behind were either killed or enslaved.
For a thousand years the Hiigaran drifted silently among the stars, where no other race dared to even look upon them for fear of being targeted by the Taiidan.. So many generations lived and died in the cold unforgiving darkness of space, with millions more dying along the way, till eventually only one ship remained, and crashed upon the bleak, dying, desolate planet of Kharak..
This is why the Bentusi were so invested in the Hiigaran race, because they were directly responsible not only for the Total destruction of the Hiigaran Navy, but for their near extinction at the hands of the Taiidan, and their long, sad exile from the light of the Galaxy.
They kept their eyes on the Exiles, watching, and hoping that they would one day rise up and return to their place among the Stars.
And three thousand years later their patience payed off. The Hiigaran, then Kushan, were slowly returning from Exile to their Homeworld from Exile. They had suffered yet again at the hands of the Taiidan, but with their Far Jump Core, they stood a chance. This is Why the Bentusi helped them in their quest to reclaim their Homeworld, and maybe, just maybe, take their place where the Bentusi had once been, as Protectors of Galactic Peace and Prosperity.

S1 is deserts of Karak at the discovery of the second core, S2 is the building of the mothership and its departure, S3 is the journey to Hiigara and final battle with the Taiidan, S4 is the rebuilding of the Hiigaran empire and the events of homeworld emergence, S5 is the conflict with the Vaygr and the search for the oracle, S6 is the discovery of the gatekeeper, the final battle with Makaan and arriving just in time to save Hiigara with Sajuuk. with the 'great sajuk' perhaps being a distorted representation of the great trans galaxial titan ships chef engineer from last ditch records left on the cores as they where all they could make with the materials at hand in the titan space ship that the 'beast' hade hidden a spore on and then when in a 'fresh' galaxy crippled the ships engines planning to consume it ,its crews and the galaxy while making a gate from ther schematics that it then activate and return to consume the progenitors own home galaxy etc and the great 'power' spoken of ..not being weapons ,but simply the schematics for a gate design helping to boost 'shortrange' hyperspace capable vessels to make transgalaxy jumps...
and the reason for unmanned cores to show fundamental hyperspace travle hardware carrying some inscriptions and residual energy readings working as 'keys' and tests for ther finders to at least try cheek they not where parts of 'the beast' being all they could leave the galaxy they came to establish the gate in...before having to detonate ther own cores to such a critical point not even a hyperspace going object could shield a organic passenger from from the event.
as anything lees risk that something of the beast survive... and while chunks of the outer hull of ther vessel survive with automatic drones and backup VI systems that slowly rebuild the ship , or rebuild several identical ones depending on the derelicts fragments trajectories etc...they couldet leave any active protocol for the drones to build any gates ...due to the risk.. all they could do be to lock the schematics for it in a vault with severe self destruct protocols if not opened correctly somewhere in a chunk of the ship likely to survive the main vessels self destruction.
and toss the cores out for galaxy natives to find and have a chance to both bring them while they still hade charge left to project ther energy 'key' singatures so someone have a chance to activate the Vault VI system and show they not where beast and worthy of the gate schematics to build one ,and leet the progenitors home galaxy know the tragic fate of ther expedition ship..but also the good news a galaxy of potential allies and resources to trade for or even be given in an effort to purge the beast plague from other galaxies now where connected to ther gate network.
