The West characterizes this as "aggressive" because it's jealous and paranoid, and because it may undermine the West's global dominance ("rules-based international order"). But we need to remember that the West has been aggressive for decades, waging wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc., sanctioning countries that do not comply with US foreign policy, overthrowing foreign governments, even democratic ones! China does not do any of these things. China is not aggressive compared to the West.

Because the founding fathers of the US hated democracy. However, most US and western thinkers are of the opinion Xi and Chinese leaders are headed down the wrong path and potentially fall off the cliff. If this is so, then the US and western thinkers should let China be and not block its progress down the supposed "Clift". The most probably reason for such western noises is that China is probably showing comparatively better successes in the last 40 years and is likely to surpass the West with its "different development model". Instead of facing the reality and learn /adopt changes themselves, it chose to derail China to stay ahead. What a loss opportunity as it would have been better to cooperate and work together to solve common human threats such as climate change and pandemic. Just accept we are different and there are many models for success. To each its own so long as humanity as a whole make progress would be a better ideal to strive for.

First, I think US has an education inflation problem. Too many got college degrees and taking courses that should have been addressed in high school education. So most businesses look down on those with only HS diploma. Second, I believe most opportunities in Mainland China remain in areas that don't need college degrees. This is partly can be blamed on the Chinese Communist Party. Entrepreneurs don't want to touch 'sensitive' areas that could draw government's involvement. Banking sector is practically government run. Create any great tech or software bounds to raise government's security concern. Because of the government's prickly behaviors, the odds of seeing companies like Nvidia, ServiceNow, Palo Alto Network rising from Mainland is slim.

Also interesting to have an almost to have an almost 20 minute interview and the words Communist Party only first feature after 16 minutes, though she did slip up and say, "the Party never changes'! Then all smiles that the CCP must 'answer to the vast majority of the people', though we know they never ask those people anything because it is a dictatorship. How much can the Chinese, even the technologically savvy young, know about the the world when there is no internet freedom, rather the world's most sophisticated and restrictive censorship? Notice the careful language, 'some preferences on the top imposed on the general public', tell that to the Tibetans, Uyghurs, Inner Mongolians, but, of course, the interviewer did not raise any issues to disturb the young lady's narrative.
She does a wonderful job of giving the Chinese perspective on some things but equivocates on several issues. Communication isn’t happening because the Chinese won’t pick up the phone. Their exploits in the South China Sea are not just “interpreted” as aggressive; they directly violate international rules that the Chinese themselves signed. There need to be standards for behavior that aren’t just explained away by cultural differences.

I don't know what she has written, but from this and some other recent interviews she has given in promotion of her book, I don't hear her saying anything much newer than the usual self-justifying and even sanctimonious Chinese arguments that I come across all the time. Simply put, the Chinese have been playing the game of 'you abused me' for the past hundred or so years against the West, all the while benefiting greatly from the very imperialism that they accuse of, even that being half genuine, and in reality becoming herself the de facto, very genuine and even worse type of, imperialist. Knowing what the characters look like originally can help understand the meanings and remember them vividly. I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture, and many years studying Chinese culture and jokes. My native language is Chinese.

The biggest problem with authoritarian governments is that the longer they are in power the more out of touch they become with the realities of their country. This happens because the penalties for telling leadership information they don’t want to hear become continually more severe. This leads to the leaders feeling too confident in bad ideas and everyone running around trying to make it seem like the bad ideas are working. We saw this in a big way with Mao and we are seeing it again with Ji. The current trend in China is to become more authoritarian and rigid. The government has shown a massive disconnect from the needs of the Chinese people. The question is, how much worse will it get before there is a reckoning that will lead to some sort of change? Then once there is a change will it be for the better or worse?
There are problems with all governments. It is not necessarily an issue of freedom. The biggest issues involve the question of whether the government is responsive to and can solve social ills. There are plenty of factors involved in this, whether the people have freedom may or may not make things better or worse. Plenty of failures of government take place in democratic societies as well. There are plenty of places in the US where you can vote and vote and vote and somehow the problems never get solved and life never gets better. And there are a few dictatorship where they decide to listen to the people and pull a lever and things get solved just like that.
@@sieteocho The reason I think you're wrong is because the illusion of freedom and individualism keeps people from coalescing together and starting a revolution. Example: France vs. U.S. France will riot if their government goes too far. In the US, they debate because what benefits one may be perceived as an assault to the other. No one spends much energy on the government.
I think you have said more simply and clearly some of what I think on this issue of government/economics/freedom. I think the U.S. especially and other countries could learn much from the Chinese model and the Cuban model. China gives us insight from an industrialized and technolized model and Cuba from an under-developed model. Jin mentioned the advantage of China being able to enact policies quickly because of the authority of the leadership. This is a significant advantage and works better for all when wisdom and compassion is applied to it. Cuban society shows how resourceful/resilient people can be and/or that we generally speaking, don't need as much as it seems we are told we need to enjoy life. I don't know if a people exist anywhere who are aware of what many have in the world, while they have much less, but have as great a vigor for living. This vigor is reflected in their music, which may be the most diverse of any society. I have watched many documentaries about Cuban music and the people on the streets seem so full of the vigor of life. To me it one of many things that refutes the notion that many African-Americans express that "our people sell drugs to survive". Some of us have been saying this since the early 80's it seems to me. Mere survival is generally not much of an issue anywhere in the world. To say this equates our situation with the emaciated Africans we baby boomers use to see on TV on treks to find water, food, and shelter/refuge from drought/famine or war. Are not human weaknesses, failings, and personality the major causes of crime and violence? If it were simply social/economic conditions wouldn't most “poor” people exhibit this behavior? My biggest problem with Liberals and the ‘Left’ in general, especially the "woke" among us, is that we limit our idealism to government. We as a social/political fraction ask little to nothing in terms of idealism from the people. Among Black activist, it seems, to be critical of anything we do that adds to our problems, is to blame the victim. From my perspective humanity is due reparations for our historic inhumanity to one another. A just/fair global economic order/system would be like reparations for all of us. Capitalism - certainly the predatory and exploitative form it has generally taken, is of the linage of monarchies, imperialism, colonialism, and slavery. This is the original globalism and the worst form of it. I don't know if we are heading into or already in a "New World Order", but I'm convinced we do need a new ordering of the world and that can only happen by us first reordering ourselves in a positive way.

Professor Jin makes a knowledgeable and articulate case for the PRC as a successful economic model relative to its past history. However, her contention that young PRC citizens look around and don’t see a superior political model elsewhere in the world better than their own, is simply false. She has made this point during several recent interviews and each and every moderator has failed to follow-up by asking why they don’t look across the strait and see a vibrant democracy that is ethnically Chinese and has achieved far greater success in virtually every metric : Taiwan! It should make learning a very high priority and enlist professors to engage students in research project, statistics, and practical experiences doing medicine if they are interested in extending lives and in healing the sick. Feed everyone; facilitate safe shelter for everyone; educate everyone; heal the sick; give everyone preventive medical care; help the old to feel safe and offer care to them as needed. I resent what Trump has done and what Biden is doing. When I think about my 10 years plus of living in China, I think of a market economy and a people who very resourceful and creative about economic situations and accumulating wealth. This allows attention to be called to things cause harm or bring discord to the people. The virtue of democracy is that the people have some measure of authority over the government. So maybe the metaphor is not so useful because you cannot replace your parents.

She didn't explain that China's youth also live in nuclear housholds where parents typically look after the grandkids and the young adults look after parents. There is a wide range of global issues that China & USA could/should work together on, but the ultimate sticking point is the future of Taiwan. Lobbing missiles into the Taiwan Strait does not reassure anyone that reunification would be peaceful and mutually beneficial. The Han Chinese is an amalgamation of various tribes formed through the long history of war. The Han Chinese as a race was nearly wiped out at a point in time. With exception of a very small minority , war is hardly on the minds of the Chinese people. Even today China is a very diverse country with many other tribes such as the Dai, Bai etc. There are also still more than 100 million living in poverty, so China needs the economic growth. My ancient ancestors ran from the wars to seek refuge in the wilder South. There are many migrations in ancient China that happened over 3000+ years there was a lot of hanky panky with both northern nomads & southern tribes , the Chinese today are so mixed that we are genetically different from the "original" people who lived by the Yellow River plains.
Solution is, leave people alone and they can grow their own crops and feed their families without government authorities breathing down their necks. Its not the fault of the west that modern China is wallowing in poverty because its government has no solutions to the problem nor is the west interested in tackling Chinese specific problems. The west has its own problems and it sure doesnt need China to find solutions for western specific problems, leave that to the west. I have seen thriving Chinese villages that have livestock, agriculture and properly self build houses with some modern conveniences, they dont need anyone to tell them how to live. “Democracy vs Autocracy” is a cute but nonsensical label. For example, Singapore is draconian in its autocratic governance but yet it is democratic. If democracy is so good, why dont we apply it in geopolitical level. Why should a country like Indonesia have less say than the US in making the rules and norms.

However, most US and western thinkers are of the opinion Xi and Chinese leaders are headed down the wrong path and potentially fall off the cliff. If this is so, then the US and western thinkers should let China be and not block its progress down the supposed "Clift". The most probably reason for such western noises is that China is probably showing comparatively better successes in the last 40 years and is likely to surpass the West with its "different development model". Instead of facing the reality and learn /adopt changes themselves, it chose to derail China to stay ahead. Interesting that the problem of an excess of industrial jobs not matching the surplus of college graduates in China is the opposite of that in the US where there seems to be a surplus of jobs requiring college education and not enough graduates to fill them
First, I think US has an education inflation problem. Too many got college degrees and taking courses that should have been addressed in high school education. So most businesses look down on those with only HS diploma. Second, I believe most opportunities in Mainland China remain in areas that don't need college degrees. This is partly can be blamed on the Chinese Communist Party. Entrepreneurs don't want to touch 'sensitive' areas that could draw government's involvement. Banking sector is practically government run. Create any great tech or software bounds to raise government's security concern. Because of the government's prickly behaviors, the odds of seeing companies like Nvidia, ServiceNow, Palo Alto Network rising from Mainland is slim.

How much can the Chinese, even the technologically savvy young, know about the the world when there is no internet freedom, rather the world's most sophisticated and restrictive censorship? She does a wonderful job of giving the Chinese perspective on some things but equivocates on several issues. Communication isn’t happening because the Chinese won’t pick up the phone. Their exploits in the South China Sea are not just “interpreted” as aggressive; they directly violate international rules that the Chinese themselves signed. There need to be standards for behavior that aren’t just explained away by cultural differences.

I don't know what she has written, but from this and some other recent interviews she has given in promotion of her book, I don't hear her saying anything much newer than the usual self-justifying and even sanctimonious Chinese arguments that I come across all the time. Idk what to make of this. How do we parse what is said given what is known about how the CCP treats their citizens who says things about China that are not allowed?
The biggest problem with authoritarian governments is that the longer they are in power the more out of touch they become with the realities of their country. This happens because the penalties for telling leadership information they don’t want to hear become continually more severe. This leads to the leaders feeling too confident in bad ideas and everyone running around trying to make it seem like the bad ideas are working. We saw this in a big way with Mao and we are seeing it again with Ji. The current trend in China is to become more authoritarian and rigid. The government has shown a massive disconnect from the needs of the Chinese people. The question is, how much worse will it get before there is a reckoning that will lead to some sort of change? Then once there is a change will it be for the better or worse?
There are problems with all governments. It is not necessarily an issue of freedom. The biggest issues involve the question of whether the government is responsive to and can solve social ills. There are plenty of factors involved in this, whether the people have freedom may or may not make things better or worse.
Plenty of failures of government take place in democratic societies as well. There are plenty of places in the US where you can vote and vote and vote and somehow the problems never get solved and life never gets better. And there are a few dictatorship where they decide to listen to the people and pull a lever and things get solved just like that.

I think you have said more simply and clearly some of what I think on this issue of government/economics/freedom. I think the U.S. especially and other countries could learn much from the Chinese model and the Cuban model. China gives us insight from an industrialized and technolized model and Cuba from an under-developed model. Jin mentioned the advantage of China being able to enact policies quickly because of the authority of the leadership. This is a significant advantage and works better for all when wisdom and compassion is applied to it. Cuban society shows how resourceful/resilient people can be and/or that we generally speaking, don't need as much as it seems we are told we need to enjoy life. I don't know if a people exist anywhere who are aware of what many have in the world, while they have much less, but have as great a vigor for living. This vigor is reflected in their music, which may be the most diverse of any society. I have watched many documentaries about Cuban music and the people on the streets seem so full of the vigor of life. To me it one of many things that refutes the notion that many African-Americans express that "our people sell drugs to survive". Some of us have been saying this since the early 80's it seems to me. Mere survival is generally not much of an issue anywhere in the world. To say this equates our situation with the emaciated Africans we baby boomers use to see on TV on treks to find water, food, and shelter/refuge from drought/famine or war. Are not human weaknesses, failings, and personality the major causes of crime and violence? If it were simply social/economic conditions wouldn't most “poor” people exhibit this behavior? My biggest problem with Liberals and the ‘Left’ in general, especially the "woke" among us, is that we limit our idealism to government. We as a social/political fraction ask little to nothing in terms of idealism from the people. Among Black activist, it seems, to be critical of anything we do that adds to our problems, is to blame the victim. From my perspective humanity is due reparations for our historic inhumanity to one another. A just/fair global economic order/system would be like reparations for all of us. Capitalism - certainly the predatory and exploitative form it has generally taken, is of the linage of monarchies, imperialism, colonialism, and slavery. This is the original globalism and the worst form of it. I don't know if we are heading into or already in a "New World Order", but I'm convinced we do need a new ordering of the world and that can only happen by us first reordering ourselves in a positive way.

Professor Jin makes a knowledgeable and articulate case for the PRC as a successful economic model relative to its past history. However, her contention that young PRC citizens look around and don’t see a superior political model elsewhere in the world better than their own, is simply false. She has made this point during several recent interviews and each and every moderator has failed to follow-up by asking why they don’t look across the strait and see a vibrant democracy that is ethnically Chinese and has achieved far greater success in virtually every metric : Taiwan! Whether one is talking about personal income, personal and political freedom, quality of life, etc…Taiwan surpasses the PRC in every regard….follow-up questions should be asked when insufficient answers are given…..

I'm a big fan of this lady, beautiful, intelligent, and above all, courageous, probably more than almost all overseas Chinese.
A good government makes the conditions of the people better and better, not just better and better for the party, for the billionaires or for world dominance. Practical? What does practical mean? Making life better for all is a model for a good social contract for governments an their people. If China wants to be practical, it should facilitate a committee at the UN where leaders can discuss practical ways to feed more people, help more unemployed people eat, and give their kids a top notch education. It should make learning a very high priority and enlist professors to engage students in research project, statistics, and practical experiences doing medicine if they are interested in extending lives and in healing the sick. Feed everyone; facilitate safe shelter for everyone; educate everyone; heal the sick; give everyone preventive medical care; help the old to feel safe and offer care to them as needed. The needs are great. It's not that things are impossible. It's more that those with all the power, money and influence do not want to do what is best for everyone.

It means China is geared towards raising the living standards of its people, and its common prosperity engulf all, with just a very small percentage at the top echelon and ditto at the very bottom... the middle are the majority capturing all the wealth, spread out so there is common prosperity.

Dr. Henry Kissinger said in an interview with Economist magazine in May that Donald Trump is responsible for the change between China and the United States because he wanted to look "tough". I resent what Trump has done and what Biden is doing. When I think about my 10 years plus of living in China, I think of a market economy and a people who very resourceful and creative about economic situations and accumulating wealth. But I found Chinese people not sure about democracy! But making money: Yes!
When Jin points out that the Chinese government can react quickly to a given situation what we need to ask is will it act to protect the interest of the people or will it act to protect itself against the people who are losing their jobs and their life savings to corruption and bad decisions of the government. I wonder how much Jin has bought into the information bubble within China and how much of the dire issues China faces she is aware of.

As a chinese, we take the goverment as father of a family ,which are different from the west value. As a chinese, we give the rights to our father to protect our safe from the criminals and invasion, to manage the country for prosperouse, etc. Chinese goverment solved a lot of reality problems in the past decades years. But not just promise the virture things like freedom and democracy without enough material base. As a normal people comparing to Jin, we know the situation here in china better than you, who can only blame us on the moral High Ground like a angel.

This allows attention to be called to things cause harm or bring discord to the people. The virtue of democracy is that the people have some measure of authority over the government. The people can hold their leaders accountable. You can think of your leaders as parents but a leader who causes harm and discord among the people should be replaced. So maybe the metaphor is not so useful because you cannot replace your parents.

She's a tad nervous and she was rushing her thoughts ... and maybe a tad too apologetic about the path that China's leadership is taking.
She didn't explain that China's youth also live in nuclear housholds where parents typically look after the grandkids and the young adults look after parents. As the last of China's baby-boomers are now approaching retirement, they'll need to be back-filled ... that's where these university grads will go in the next 2-5 years. She could have also mentioned Xi's plan to deploy graduates to the countryside to help develop and grow rural village economies. There are 10's of thousands of young Chinese training to become social workers as I type. China is just now developing support agencies to assist the boomers as they approach their senior years and when care is necessary.
Overall, I was disappointed in her presentation ... Eric Li would have articulated better responses to the reporter's questions.

There is a wide range of global issues that China & USA could/should work together on, but the ultimate sticking point is the future of Taiwan. Lobbing missiles into the Taiwan Strait does not reassure anyone that reunification would be peaceful and mutually beneficial. Chinese nationalists seem to prefer "eat the flesh and drink the blood" outcome.
Americans and the west needs to understand this point: The Chinese people as a race did not originate naturally. The Han Chinese is an amalgamation of various tribes formed through the long history of war. The Han Chinese as a race was nearly wiped out at a point in time. With exception of a very small minority , war is hardly on the minds of the Chinese people. Even today China is a very diverse country with many other tribes such as the Dai, Bai etc. There are also still more than 100 million living in poverty, so China needs the economic growth. A billion mouths to feed is no joke. When one is hungry and struggling to survive, you think there is time to think about freedom & the right to vote?

@@adamiskandar5107 You can read up on the War of the 8 Princes during the Western Jin Dynasty, followed by the Invasion of the Barbarians. My ancient ancestors ran from the wars to seek refuge in the wilder South. There are many migrations in ancient China that happened over 3000+ years there was a lot of hanky panky with both northern nomads & southern tribes , the Chinese today are so mixed that we are genetically different from the "original" people who lived by the Yellow River plains.
Solution is, leave people alone and they can grow their own crops and feed their families without government authorities breathing down their necks.
Its not the fault of the west that modern China is wallowing in poverty because its government has no solutions to the problem nor is the west interested in tackling Chinese specific problems.
The west has its own problems and it sure doesnt need China to find solutions for western specific problems, leave that to the west.

Economic growth does not mean prosperity for everyone, just the well highly educated and talented people, especially in China.
I have seen thriving Chinese villages that have livestock, agriculture and properly self build houses with some modern conveniences, they dont need anyone to tell them how to live.
Give that same freedom to the poor and they will build farms and agricultural crops to feed their families and problem solved.
This inst just a economic issue, it is simply to allow these people to do it themselves without any government interference.

China wants peaceful unification with Taiwan which is also in line with Taiwan's Constitution, but the current administration in Taiwan is pro independence. For a long time, both sides are fine with the status quo as China isn't in a hurry as they want to fortify their economy first and hope to win the hearts of their compatriots on the island with many economic incentives.
As part of the U.S.'s grand strategies to counter and contain China's rise, the U.S. seeks the opportunity to play the Taiwan card by exploiting the separatist movement and emboldening the separatists.
I don't need to go into details, you know the U.S. is renowned for instigating color revolutions and bringing down any government that does not follow the big brother.
