    I was taught that ripping the fabric on the crosswise green is one way to ensure that you get a straight line on the grain. I still do it to get my fabric straight before I cut with the rotary cutter.

    Hi there! I get the same subscription boxes. The book that comes with the fabrics shows you what to do with the fabrics for that month and at the end of the year you will have enough blocks to make a entire quilt. 😊

    Hello, I rip my quilt borders lengthwise but an inch or so wider than the finished border needs to be. On one side, I trim off the ragged edge, making sure any pulled threads are cut off. This is the edge which is sewn to the quilt. After my longarm quilter is finished, I trim the borders to the final measurement. This way ensures that no batting is beyond the quarter inch, which may happen during the quilting process. When ripping and trimming, I take into consideration any one-way designs and how these prints will be sewn to the top. If the print is meant to go in one direction, the top and bottom borders are ripped crosswise.

    Everyone seems to have an opinion these days, don't they!!!! You addressed these people's 'concern' with such positivity--and finality!!! Wonderful job--and yes I really liked your pillow/quilt, too! It could have become either, couldn't it? I'm definitely going to stop my lovely blue and white log cabin for a moment, and make an 18 inch pillow with some beautiful scraps! (It's always fun (and helpful) to use (get rid of) scraps!!!! HAVE A VERY FUN DAY!

    Ripping Fabric: one does get a true straight of grain for sure... but I think using a rotary cutter would be better for 'lesser quality' fabrics that may not rip as cleanly; also, getting that exact 1/4" seam would be hard on a ripped fabric as the sides are fuzzy and uneven; but the sound of ripping is enjoyable! I just would never do it! It is all about which camp you are in (press open or to the side... rip or rotary... etc.) Pick a camp, and have fun!

      @seweasybysandy  Месяц назад +1

      For me it really depends on the projects, if it's something that requires precision to work, I won't think of ripping. If it's a free flow, more laid back project, I love to rip fabric 😀

    I cannot afford subscription boxes. Instead, I have told all my friends and family they can buy me fabric anytime they want to give me a gift. My rules are simple. It must be 100% cotton and pick whatever you think is beautiful NOT what you think I would like. I have received some of the most beautiful fabric I would NEVER have chosen on my own. And they often get a return gift made with the fabric they gifted me. It's been an adventure!

      Pretty sure her happiness is quite evident. In fact, it’s infectious. I am extremely thankful to have seen this, I’ve got a broken shoulder. I never would’ve thought just to rip and go, now I can sew for pleasure again. Being unable to use the rotary cutter has really cut into “me time” sewing. Everything takes a lot more time and limits are a necessity for healing as an adult. My 2 daughters and I love to clear scraps with wall hangings in the summer, this is a perfect solution. They’ll be so excited.
