Neat idea. One thought I had was what if you used sand or some other solid just in case the bottle ever becomes compromised? You could trade a towel for a broom to clean up and your stairs might be happier 😃
First you are making it harder for the bottle to do its job by doubling it up on the bottle side. 2/1 against you. You should have done that on the door side. That brings me to Second You should have put the pull in the center of the door, and doubled up THERE. The lessons the length of string and it give you the 2/1 in your favor.
That complicated thing is called Mechanical Advantage of rope and pulley system. 😊
