There are not many bands that you can say confidently that every member is equal in their chosen instrument. So when the drummer and guitarists are unarguably some of the best in metal period, I mean, I don't think there's much left to say.
@KeepItSecret I think his point was that when everyone in the band is incredible, each member doesn’t stand out from each other as much. But compared to others in the scene, each one of them is leading the charge on incredible performance. All about perspective
The progress of Spencers vocals over the years are a clear sign of absolutely mind-boggling dedication. He seems so perfectly aware of everything he does, I've even seen comments of him apologizing for a "weak performance" under some live videos, when he didn't feel that well with what he brought to the table. Even though there were so many people giving him a bad time for how he approached song writing and vocals in general, I feel like he himself is his own "worst" critic. Hats off!
I think those of us that constantly put ourselves down are often the best at something! It keeps us ever trying to get better. Often the people most up their own ass are the worst!
I disagree, I've definitely seen worse critics and they're usually worse given how unreasonable their criticism is. I've ALWAYS loved Sponce's voice and I think it's truly gotten more impressive with time!
@KeepItSecret One of the reason I wasn't a "fan" after P1, it's because I thought Spencer was not that great to me. Going only by heart here, if I remember correctly, he appologized for his performance on P1 and said that he's going to be better on P2. I was like "Fair enough, let see then I guess". I ended up listening to P2 when it came out. I was impressed. Until I heard Ragnarok. Then I went full fan mode over night. Holy shit, that particular part in that song still gives me goosebump to this day (you all know the part I'm thinking, right? 😄)
He definitely comes off as a humble guy, but what is without doubt is his dedication to his craft. One decade = a profound difference. Sincerely, some periphery fanboy from 2010
When I Periphery for the first time I honestly thought there were two vocalists. One clean, one screamer. I didn’t think one person could be doing all of what he does. Just goes to show how insanely talented Spencer is.
To be honest, I couldn't stand his clean vocals the first time I heard them fifteen years ago. However, when you put into perspective just how talented each member of periphery is, It would be extremely difficult to have a vocalist that would shine through such talented musicians. However, Spencer does that and then some and I truly don't think anybody could replace him. It's probably the reason that when he was sick. They just did an instrumental tour and didn't have anyone to fill in for him. Lol. Fucking amazingly, brilliant, astonishing band. Great video as well brother.
Not to discredit the rest of the guys in Periphery (they're all amazing) but Spencer's performance on P5 brings everything together in a really special way. Loved seeing him do this.
Holy shit that was a legit performance. I was running through the vocals in my head as he was singing them and thinking, “where the hell does he get a chance to breathe?” Lol. Seeing it performed this raw and accurate makes me appreciate the performance all that much more.
As a musician, you really learn proper breathing techniques. One really good one is saying “how” while you’re breathing in. Saying that completely opens up your throat and allows you to breath in more at once. With practice, you can get a full lung in only like 0.2 seconds or quicker. Also, breathe with your gut, not your shoulders. Proper breathing should not have your shoulders move. Don’t think “expanding your lungs upward”, think “expand out and down”. You can use up a TON more of your lung capacity and hold your breath longer.
@@VoidHxnterYeah proper breathing shouldn’t even really be an action in itself. When you’ve run out of air in your lungs, keep your proper singing posture and let the air in. A lot of people ”pull” the air in but in reality your lungs will fill themselves if you let them to. I’m a classical singer so I don’t even breathe consciously anymore. It’s just an instant intake of air every time I run out of air and even that isn’t something you think of with enough experience. When the next phrase or section starts, my lungs are full of fresh air. Proper breathing is absolutely mandatory.
@KeepItSecret he did do well on P1, but I know they used some tuning on his cleans back when that was recorded. Also his screaming range and capabilities have dramatically increased. You can hear the difference especially between P1 and P2
It’s crazy to hear the juggling between the “scream singing” and clean vocals in that first pre-chorus. They probably recorded those parts separately and then overlayed them on the record. The live delivery is so good! Good capture Chris
Just saw them in Montreal. I am a guitarist and was going to see a guitar performance. Spencer stole the whole fucking show. I was absorbed by his stuning flawless singing on each song. For some vicious screame he sounded even better then the album. This guy is a beast.
I saw them in Montreal as well, and can confirm his vocals at that show blew me away. Usually I'm expecting live performances to be not as polished as they sound in the album, but like you said at that show it was almost 1 to 1 if not better. A true master at his craft.
The lack of strain through Spencers neck and face blows my mind, considering he is going full tilt from start to finish with minimal times to compose himself and get some quality breathes. Dude is so talented
Spencer shits all competition outta the water. I remember early Periphery when many disliked Sponce where I heard great holistic synchronicity, and I really felt that Baretto didn't have that flair. If you're reading this Sponce you proved EVERYONE WRONG up like an angel and down like a wounded ox forever. I will die whole if I get to hear Satellites live
Spencer is amazing. Not many vocalists could perform a song like this, with cleans and growls, high pitches and low pitches and then come out of the room like nothing happened.
Mikael Åkerfeldt back in the day. He had in my opinion the most evil/ demon sounding screams of all time and his singing voice is very clean and soft. When it comes to purely extreme vocals, I think we'll have to wait a while before anything comes close to prime time Åkerfeldt. And I'm not just talking Opeth- Bloodbath and "Brave Murder Day" by Katatonia still have EXCEPTIONAL vocals. But yeah, if I could hear Luck as a constant live as it sounds on the album, I'd piss my pants.
Hearing Spencer's thought process and insecurities wasn't something I expected when I clicked. Thought it would just be the performance. The things you teach is always on point, Chris. It's like you know what people need to hear without them even knowing it. Great job to both of you!
I love his diction on “YOU WILL SAY THIS” sounds very old school death metal screaming the way he ends the phrase. Spencer just has the best range of any vocalist ever.
It's also that he lets himself be a little ridiculous with it. I remember watching Chris' vid about spencer and putting yourself in a character's shoes to express yourself more freely and for me that's exactly what he did there, reminds me of their song MK Ultra
I love how Spencer is screaming in the house, and walking around while being recorded. I've been listening to Periphery since the first album in 2010.. I've been screaming and singing for 15 years, and I've always used Periphery's music, and specifically Spencer's vocals to get better, and I've been practicing my vocals to their new album. It's an amazing album, thank you. I wish I could see Periphery live one day..
Spencer Sotelo has been my favorite vocalist for quite some time, but this live performance really shows just how talented he is! Can't wait to see Periphery on tour!!!!
Hello again Chris...I've been a casual fan of the band for yrs but theres something about these songs that are hitting differently...Just the sheer versatility of Spencer's voice really gives the band a wide sonic palate in which to write...They have reached a new level with this album..thx for the vid guys 🤘👍✌️
I think it has to do a lot with Spencer being involved in the writing from day 1, and you tell can just how vocally-driven this whole album is vs. the albums that start off with just riff writing. Such a small thing to change in their entire process, yet the outcome delivers some of the most unique music put out in the last couple decades. Great band to admire and be inspired by!
Every time I've seen them live they've absolutely killed it and I absolutely love that Spencer differentiates himself from a lot of other vocalists with great ranges on record by actually singing the harder parts live, since they're the most prevalent in the mix. I don't want to seem like I'm sitting on other bands, because vocals are not as easy as just singing well in a live performance, but again, it's so refreshing to hear Spencer killing those parts live while performing, too.
Spencer blew this album out of the water. The whole band did, and they are all incredible... but there are a lot of amazing metal instrumentalists. IDK how many people can do what Spencer does.
